The dinner table in Nei-Nei’s chateau still held a feel of her.

The joys and lively chatters that coursed through the walls of the house triggered Fredrick’s memories of that night he visited Nei-Nei unexpectedly, around this time of the night and found Avery and Adrian here.

It felt weirdly strange to see his grandma feel so at ease with Avery and Adrian whom she had just met.

He often wondered if being close to the time of her death made her become more welcoming or maybe Avery and Adrian just had that magical beacon that endeared them to everyone.

“Yes, maybe, just maybe it is something about them” Fredrick muttered. His eyes wandered around the room, scanning each face and each expression, each person had finished their glass of juice except ….

“Alex” he sighed.

Alex was withdrawn, more withdrawn than he had ever noticed. His expressions worried him, and with every passing moment, he became even more antsy.

It was even more disturbing that Margaret had no clue that he was goin

Margaret got out of bed, her footsteps echoing through the quiet house. She threw on a hoodie over her heavy pajamas pant and made her way to the kitchen. “Eventually they’ll all wake up…” she muttered to herself, watching the beautiful snow flakes of the morning shower down lazily. Her mind wandered off to the ugly night that had given way to the beauty of this morning.Alex would not tell her what was happening between them, unexpectedly, the kettle hissed and sputtered to life.“Tea for two, please. I’m freezing” Gary said, in a not so usual tone.“Under the weather?” Margaret asked, sensing his gray mood. “Nope” Gary shook his head. “I’m okay.”Margaret poured the hot water into two cups of herbal mix and handed one to Gary.“Are we out of coffee?” He asked, seeing the green color of the cup.“It’s too early for coffee, besides it’s winter. It’s advisable to drink medicinal tea.”“Coffee is medicine for me…” Gary said, almost irritated, dumping the cup on the table.“Don’t pa

  • My wife, my enemy!   Bruises hurt more in winter

“Winter!” Adrian exclaimed.“We will have more customers, I’m positive” This was his second attempt to start a conversation with Gary but he wouldn’t budge. He had insisted on brewing coffee today while Adrian did the serving. It was obvious that he was trying to avoid communicating with anyone but Adrian couldn’t just sit still watching him gray out with the weather. Truly, as calculated, it was barely noon but he had recorded a high amount of sales, but even the numbers didn’t excite Gary, neither did the constant inflow of customers. Adrian thought it wise to keep his comments to himself, observing his demeanor.“Winter is indeed cold…” he sighed, in sync with his phone buzzing in his pocket. He fumbled his pockets for his phone,“Heather!” Adrian exclaimed, scurrying over to the counter.“Can I borrow your AirPods, Gary?” “Sure” Gary nodded, handing over the case to him.Adrian nervously struggled to connect the AirPods with his phone, “Sh*t!” He cussed, “What is it?” Gary

  • My wife, my enemy!   Emotional outburst; fire amidst ice.

Fredrick’s idea of a vacation with his friends was supposed to be all fun and bonding. How things went from warmth to ice, he couldn’t really explain but seated here at the dinner table, were his family, all complete. Everyone to his plate of chicken and vegetables stir fry, mindlessly chewing without a word.Fredrick blamed himself for the cold tension going around in the air, well- he and winter. He was completely oblivious to the fact that even Margaret and Avery had not said a word to each other and neither did Adrian and Gary.“How can I salvage this?” He muttered to himself. Unconsciously, his eyes wandered from his wife to Gary, then to Adrian. The house was so quiet that he had no idea how to pierce through the fog of silence that engulfed them.“Uncle Fredrick!” Adrian exclaimed,“Oh, thank God! Finally” Avery exclaimed silently. “A.D?” Fredrick replied, completely relieved for a sound on the table.“What is it, Adrian?” Avery chipped in.“Uh, well. It’s about my car, Uncle

“I don’t think there’s anything to talk about. Fredrick clearly has replaced me with his half brother.” Alex seethed.Fredrick remained quiet, he knew Alex was trying to avoid talking about his panic attacks. He silently analyzed the situation and decided that to be quiet was the best option. Fredrick glanced at him, his brows were furrowed in feigned annoyance. Feigned, because he had no reason to be angry. Fredrick was the offended one.“Fredrick…” Gary called, giving him a slight push.Fredrick took a gulp of water and stood up from the table.“I had a long day, Gary. I just want to be in bed, let’s do this some other time.” Fredrick’s voice was low and weak, evidently writhing with emotions and fatigue. As he walked away from the dining room, he made certain to avoid Alex’s gaze. Unexpectedly, Alex jolted from his seat, scurrying over to his side. “I can’t sleep…” he muttered. “I really can’t sleep and I don’t think you can either.”“I sleep pretty well, Alex. I don’t want t

Christmas was fast approaching and so were the coldest days in winter. Mrs Greenwood had just been informed about her pancreatic disease. The second, well, the second wasn’t as long as the first, but it could count, she had intentionally forgotten another of her sons at daycare. She really was a bad mother… but who could blame her? Children weren’t part of her plans for the future and it had to remain so. The next few hours of the ride was a torture, she repeatedly relived those moments as though they were the only moments she made bad decisions, when in fact, bad decisions were her everyday life. “Answer it then, Attorney Clinton.” Gary teased.“I’ll have my assistant do it…” Alex shrugged.“You’ll have your assistant handle your biggest client? I might have to start looking for a new Attorney for the company.” Fredrick riposted.“My god, Freddie! Why’re you so intense?” Alex said, snatching his phone from the table.“You better listen as well.”Alex readjusted in his seat and clicked the answer button,“Good morning, Mr Clinton.” Fredrick recognized the voice immediately. “It’s Felix” he whispered.“What can I do for you, Felix?” Alex said softly, yet his tone was firm and stern.“I have no permission to call you, but I’d rather you handled the case, Sir.” Felix said. His tone and demeanor made even Fredrick shift in his chair, “What’s this about?” Alex asked.“There’s a woman…”Alex’s heart sank immediately, he contemplated putting the call off loud speaker, but that would seem suspicious for Fredrick and his wife. So he squinted his eyes and crossed his fingers, hoping

“I’m not ready…” Gary read. Alex’s text message to him had been replaying in his head for the last two days. He was in a turmoil as much Alex was, however for a totally different reason.Where Alex was worried about disrupting Fredrick’s life with the news of his mother’s return, Gary was worried that they were only delaying the inevitable. He was more concerned about Fredrick’s feelings when he would eventually find out about their secret.Regardless of his fears, Alex was his Attorney, professionally his decision towered over his. “Is something going on with the boys?” Margaret whispered, in a quiet conversation with Avery and Noah.“Gary and Alex have been acting quite distant…” “Yes, I noticed. Since the day they were called to Fredrick’s office.” Noah concurred.Avery frowned slightly, trying to connect the dots of their observations. “I haven’t quite noticed, Fredrick has been the same.”“I think he doesn’t know what’s going on with them…” Noah riposted.“Last night, while

The next morning in the large mansion at White Avenue was quite a whirlwind.“Can’t you stay for a bit? Say two more weeks?” Avery sighed softly.Margaret and Adrian chuckled wryly,“I don’t want to go neither” Margaret replied.“But I have to…”“My fiancé needs me” she added, extending her arms so that Avery and Adrian would see her diamond ring.Avery rolled her eyes and pouted slightly,“You can have a fiancé and still stay here… don’t leave me!” Avery cried. Her cries were so outrightly falling on deaf ears because, as Alex emerged from the hallway with bags in hand, followed by Fredrick, Margaret leaped towards him,“Hi there, my fiancé” she squealed excitedly, hanging on her husband’s arm. Avery shook her head playfully, and gestures to her husband too.“I guess it’s just us from now on...”“I know so..” Fredrick replied.“Invite us to the wedding, if you please” he added.Alex nodded agreeably,“That definitely, you won’t miss.”Turning to Adrian, he laid his free hand on his s

  • My wife, my enemy!   Can you hate me later?

Fredrick woke up to the sound screeching chairs and creaking doors piercing loudly into his hearing. He groaned miserably and snuggled into his sheets, unable to bring himself to witness Avery’s departure, especially after his charade last night, he had regretted announcing their divorce and end of contract at the table. He had breached their contract and if Avery wanted, she could take him to court and sue him for damages- after all, the contract was to be done and resolved confidentially, in order to protect each other from prying ears.He shuddered unbelievably as last night replayed in his mind,“Why did I do that?!” “Alex hates me, I’m sure of it” he thought aloud.Suddenly, a thunderous bang sounded on his door, jolting up from the bed instantly. The thudding persisted urgently, without as much as a pause,“Don’t break down the door, I’m coming!” He thundered, hurrying towards the door. Before he could pull the door open himself, the outsider had pushed it open and let himsel

Ivy turned down the volume of the soft music on her phone to hear the approaching footsteps clearly. As Ivy strained to listen, the muffled thuds grew louder, echoing through the quiet hall way.She took a quick glance at her phone’s screen which displayed the time as 1 in the morning. It struck her as rather alarming and unexpected that at this late hour, people were not only awake, but also strolling around the neighborhood.“But this is Greenville” she told herself, shrugging it off as she turned the next page of the novel she was reading.Just then, the approaching footsteps stopped in front of her door, accompanied by a knock. Panic surged through her as she held her breath, silently praying the unknown person away. The knocking persisted, this time, a bit louder than before. With trembling hands, Ivy advanced to the door, her voice quivering with anxiety as she muttered,“Please, whoever you are, go away!”“Ivy!” Adrian replied,A rush if emotions coursed through her as she he

Avery drove into the mansion that had been her home for the past one year, her heart wrenching and aching badly at the sight of the man she loved dearly drowning himself in alcohol. Fredrick had readily signed their contract termination papers two days ago.It felt surreal their contract was really over, and she had a week to leave the mansion. As she stepped out of her car, her heart sank at the sight of him sitting absentmindedly in the garden, taking no notice of the car that drove into his compound.“Hey, Avery!” Margaret squealed, startling her from the wrenching sight she was engrossed in.“Hey Mag” Avery replied, forcing a smile.“Fredrick has been like that for days” Margaret said, observing her gaze.“Is something wrong? I’m worried, even Alex is drinking.”“I… don’t know…” Avery stuttered, her voice trembling with inexplicable emotions. She was the one leaving him, but she was the one crying, she couldn’t understand herself.“Are you okay, Avery? Surprisingly, as if they understood his command, they gradually quietened.“How did you do that?!” Avery gasped in relief as she re-entered the room. “They’ve been so troublesome today.” She added.Noah turned to face her, a wide grin played on his face, beaming proudly,“Of course, they’ll listen to their uncle.
