Atticus clutched her chest, right where her heart was, as the pain from Katy’s words pierced her deeper than she thought possible. She felt the wound in her heart splitting further, raw and unrelenting. Her breaths came unevenly as she looked at herself in the mirror.

“Was it… my memory?” she whispered to no one but herself, her voice trembling.

A bitter, emotionless laugh escaped her lips before she wiped the tears on her cheeks. She straightened her back, took one last deep breath, and stepped out of the bathroom.

She froze mid-step when she saw Phoenix leaning casually against the doorframe of her room.

“Atticus—”

“Don’t.” She raised her hands, in a futile attempt to shield herself from him. “Just don’t.”

“Atticus—”

“I’m fine,” she said firmly, brushing past him and heading for the bed. She sat on the edge, her back turned to him.

“Anyway,” she began, her voice calm but edged with bitterness, “Katy came by earlier.” She turned to look at him, watching his reaction carefully.

I said those words, my voice trembling. Her tears began to fall. “Whatever it was that I did to you in the past, please forgive me. But if you can’t, and if hurting me is the only way for you to forgive me, then I’m already forgiven because I’m hurting right now, Phoenix. It hurts… It hurts because you gave me hope, but it’s okay. It’s my fault for hoping.” She forced a smile despite her pain. “Am I forgiven, Phoenix? Are my tears enough? Is the pain in my heart enough for you to forgive me for whatever I did?”He didn’t move. He just stared at her, his eyes lifeless and cold. She wiped her wet cheeks and smiled again, the sadness still evident. “Is it enough, Phoenix? Is it enough? Have you had your revenge? Are you okay now? Are you happy now?”Still, he didn’t move. He didn’t utter a single word. She got up from the bed and stood barefoot in front of him. Raising her hand, she cupped his face gently. “Phoenix, I’m okay.” Atticus repeated the words several times to her husband, who was persistently assisting her as they walked toward the door of his house. “Really, Phoenix, I’m perfectly fine.”“Let me take care of you,” Phoenix replied.Apparently not satisfied, he scooped her up in his arms and carried her toward the door.“Phoenix!” she exclaimed, laughing and playfully slapping his chest. “Put me down. I can handle myself.”“Just let me do this, sweetheart,” Phoenix said, planting a kiss on her cheek before continuing his walk.Atticus could only shake her head. He was thoughtful, sweet, and loving—just like the Phoenix she had married years ago.“Open the door, sweethea

She recognized him—he was one of Phoenix’s employees, but she didn’t know his name.“W-what do you want from me?” she asked, her voice trembling with fear. The man pressed the gun against her forehead, making her entire body shake in terror.“Be quiet.”Her body trembled.
