Tessa’s POVWhen I walked into the living room, Joseph was sitting on the couch, and I wasn’t expecting the guest he had sitting on the other couch in front of him.Carter sat with his leg crossed over the other and a smile on his face as he spoke to his best friend. I hadn’t spoken to Carter in a while, not since I found out that he was ghosting Ruby. Carter had completely broken her heart; I had no idea how serious the two of them were getting until Carter confessed to her what he was. Of course, Ruby didn’t believe a thing he said and thought he was playing a cruel joke on her.
Tessa’s POVEverything happened all at once. I dropped my cell phone to the ground and covered my mouth with my hands as I stared up at Joseph. For once, in this whole time that I’ve known him, I saw uncertainty in Joseph’s eyes.Carter was already out the door, heading to the train station. I was completely frozen.“Hello?” The person asked. “Is anybody there?”I completely forgot he was still on the phone with the train stat
Tessa’s POVI wasn’t sure how long we were waiting in the waiting room. Time seemed to stand still; we could have been there for minutes, maybe even hours. I couldn’t be sure. My insides had gone numb, and I cried all the tears that I could.Joseph was kind enough to remain silent for most of the time so I could process my thoughts. I stared down at my phone screen, staring at the last text I received from Ruby. Staring at the words, “I miss you.”This can’t be the last message I receive from her. I refus
Joseph’s POV“What’s going on?” Tessa asked, breaking through the silence that consumed us.“I didn’t know what else to do,” Carter whispered, staring down at his hands. “I can’t lose her…”Tessa’s brows pinched together as she studied him carefully.“The blood on your face… it’s not from Ruby…” she whispered; it wasn’t a question, but he nodded anyway.
Tessa’s POVRuby's eyes were red like fire when she finally opened them. Joseph was quickly by my side, pulling me against him out of fear of what Ruby would do. I didn’t think she could do much considering they cuffed her to the bed. She couldn’t get up even if she wanted to, but then again, I wasn’t sure how strong of a vampire she was.Her face was still pale and bruised, but the bones that were once wedging out of her had healed over the last few days. Tears stained my cheeks as my body trembled against Joseph. The nurse
Tessa’s POV“She had just woken up, Tessa. She didn’t know what she was doing. I doubted she even knew her own name,” Joseph said, his brows pinched together.I shook my head; tears brimmed the corner of my eyes and I had to chew the inside of my cheek to keep from sobbing.“She almost bit me…” I whispered. “She tried to….”“Listen to me,” Joseph said, cutting off my words as he cupped my face i
Tessa’s POVRuby’s voice sounded strained like it hurt her to speak. I could also tell she was guarded, which I couldn’t really blame her for. Her entire life was turned upside down and there was nothing she could do about it. I couldn’t imagine what she was going through; having to put her life on hold.I was taken aback by her question though; Are you a vampire too?Did she really think I was keeping that from her this whole time? I guess she really didn’t know what to believe.
Joseph’s POV“4 years?!” Ruby exclaimed, terror on her face. “What about my career? What about New York? Oh, God! I’m going to be a monster. I’ll never be able to rejoin society!”Tears rapidly fell out of Ruby’s eyes, and I knew Tessa wanted to go to her and comfort her friend. But I wasn’t going to let Tessa near her with how unstable Ruby was. She had just woken up earlier this morning and she still suffered from severe blood lust, even though it was currently being substituted with blood bags. The way Ruby kept looking at Tessa like she was a snack made my stomach uneasy.
