The moment his name comes from my mouth, he turns to face me. I can see the pain on his face, and he knows I will ask. “Yes, Briar?” His tone is different. The devastating news he does not want to give is now being questioned. “Did you search our room and ensure its safety?” I chicken out, or maybe I don’t want the sadness to come yet?
