“Blood?”

Sarah looks shaken, “From where?”

“Down the stream,” I say, quickly. “Let’s go!”

I don’t even wait for her to respond, abandoning the canisters and grabbing her almost effortlessly before running in the direction fo where we set up camp.

I burst into the camp, “Smoke and blood. Coming from down the stream.”

Damon is the first on his feet, his face grim, “You think the Bears are in trouble.”

“Makes sense, doesn’t it?” I let Sarah slide to the ground, my arm still around her waist, an unconscious gesture. “The Order is attacking packs all at once.”

Damon is quiet for one heartbeat, before he nods, “Let’s go. Aliya, you, Sarah, Kayla stay here.”

I nod, “That is for the -“

“I can fight,” Sarah says, tightly, reaching behind her back to touch her swords, purposefully. “Kayla and Aliya are no more useless in a battle than I am.”

“Kayla is -“

“She’s a child but she’s also the Phoenix,” Sarah reminds me, tersely. “She’s here because she intends to figh

The panic that sets in is instant but before I can reach Kayla’s side, Sarah and Aliya are already there.Sarah props up the girl while Aliya tries to do something, muttering something under her breath.Whatever she’s speaking ends up making Kayla fall unconscious into Sarah’s arms. “What’s going on?” I demand, taking Kayla into my arms and checking her pulse.“Her transformations are too erratic,” Aliya finally says, her voice tense. “A Phoenix takes twenty years to fully transform. They are not meant to transform this early, She should not be able to produce fire at this age. Her fast progression is harming her body.”“What do we do?” I ask, urgently.Aliya just shakes her head, “I don’t know. Like I said, there isn’t a lot I know about the Phoenix. My knowledge is limited. For the past few centuries, they have been protected and hidden. Especially after the Great War.”I take a deep breath, “So what now?”“Let her rest. I’ll make some remedy for her to slow

It’s the way she grabs me, tightening her hold on me, that my wolf calms down.My heart is racing as the panic subsides, “W-what?”Dazed, I let her hold me, not knowing what’s happening, a little dazed. And then I smell the blood. I look down to see the spots of blood on her shirt.“Why are you bleeding?” I ask, horrified. She pulls away from me slightly, her eyes shaking, “It’s your blood.”“Mine?” I echo, confused and then I feel the wetness around my mouth and nose.“What were you thinking of doing?!” She gives me a sharp shake, still straddling me. There is real terror in her voice. “What were you thinking of doing?!”“I - I don’t know what you mean?” “I fel - You were bleeding from your nose and mouth and your heartbeat had slowed down!” She bunches up my shirt in her fists, glaring at me and yet there are tears in her eyes. “Tell me the truth! What were you planning on doing?!”I don’t know how to react, “Sarah, I don’t know what you mean. I just ca

When Sarah awakens, she stares at me, sleepily, before her eyes widen.I quickly lift my hands, “I didn’t do anything.”She pushes herself into a sitting position and looks down at the jacket I’ve draped over her, “Aren’t you cold?”I am but I just shrug it off, “I don’t feel that cold.”She just gives me a look, “You’re such a liar. Take it. You’ll freeze.”“I’m fine,” I insist. “Let’s go back before people come looking for us.”“Take your jacket.”“I don’t want it.”“I don’t want it either.”“Well, somebody has to wear it so you wear it,” I grab her wrist and pull her into a standing position. She bumps into my chest and we both freeze for a moment, startled by the contact. I wait for her to move back but she lingers for a few seconds, and my heart is racing. She finally does step back, her cheeks a little flushed.“It’s cold,” She says, loudly, almost deliberately, avoiding my eyes.“Good,” I say, pulling the jacket around her even tighter. “Wear

“The Hunter’s Association?” For a minute there, Nelson looks confused and then his expression tightens, “You mean the legendary Hunters? They hunt our kind.”“They don’t,” Sarah says. “At least, not these ones. They are spreading word of the Order, trying to gather allies. From what I understand, the Order is trying to create its own army of Shifters, those it has managed to corrupt. They are using children to train them into subservient soldiers. They want to rule over us all, a select few at the top. Most of the vampires and necromancers are working with them.”“I’ve already dealt with two of them,” Aliya adds. “But there are definitely more. Although necromancers prefer traveling alone but they are known to join forces when needed. And they are definitely more in this case.”“We need to increase our numbers,” Sarah says, heavily. “With the vampires ability to create these morphed creatures who are battle hardened and the necromancers ability to create toxic zombie like

The Bear elder looks confused, “It was my understand that pieces of the prophecy were shared with all packs. One line, two lines.”I frown, looking at Damon, something occurring to me, “What if the reason that all these shifter packs were infiltrated were not because of an attempt to subdue them but to find pieces of the prophecy and combine them?”From the look on Damon’s face, he seems to have come to the same realization as me. “It would definitely make more sense,” he agrees.“So, all this time, they were simply searching the packs for the pieces of the prophecy,” Sarah murmurs. “It would explain why they were so fixated on the Clear Mountain Clan Pack. Because the prophecy mentioned a silver wolf. Only the Clear Mountain pack has silver wolves.”“The reason they were targeting you in the beginning must have been because they had been able to figure out part of the prophecy. They must have realized it pinpointed to you,” I add.Sarah looks unconvinced, “I’m still

Sarah falls silent and this pain is a living thing inside of me, “Enough of this. I may love you but it’s starting to become clear to me that whatever love you once had inside of me, I destroyed myself. I don’t hold you accountable for how you feel about me. But if there is truly no love for me in you, then don’t insult me with your pity. As far as Esmerelda is concerned, she is a friend and nothing more.”I take a step away from her, seeing the look on Sarah’s face and steeling my heart, “I don’t want you bringing me food or trying to take care of me. If I have a nightmare or a panic attack, let me suffer by myself. I’ll overcome it at some point.”I’m about to step away when she says, her voice a little sharp, “I don’t pity you.”My jaw tightens, “Really? Because that’s what it seems like to me.”“Well, you’re wrong!” She actually sounds almost angry, “Both you and Aliya are wrong! We were true mates! I follow after them, shifting in mid run to move faster.I had left Sarah a fifteen minute walk from the campsite. I reach there in five and as I approach closer, I hear the sounds of something heavy swinging in the air.I burst into the clearing to see Sarah fighting off against five men. The seem to be human men by all appearances till Sarah stabs one of them with the sword she had been wearing on her back. The human doesn’t seem to be bothered by the fact that he has been fatally stabbed and pulls on the sword to yank Sarah closer.I rush forward and just as I’m about to bite his head off, Sarah screams, “Don’t! He’s toxic!”I change direction mid air, swiping the man’s head off.The soldiers come pouring in after me and Aliya shouts, “It’s the necromancer! He must be here! “What do you mean by ‘all’?” Sarah asks, sheathing her sword and stepping forward. Aliya looks satisfied, “I mean this necromancer was linked to all of the others. He was in the middle of some spell when he stumbled on to you and decided to attack you. Killing him, killed all those who were linked to him.”“That means all the bodies they controlled have also decreased,” I murmur, realizing the significance of this victory. “Exactly,” Aliya nods. “We’ve instantly decreased their numbers which is going to go a long way in  helping us.”Even as I agree with him, something strikes me, “Why was he here though?”Nobody has an answer to that. After a moment, Sarah reaches into her pocket and brings out a smaller version of the map her grandfather gave us. After studying it for a few minutes, she points at something, “There’s a human village here.”Her face is grim, “What are the chances that the village has been wiped out?”I look over her shoulder and point at anot

SarahThe days that follow are sad ones. We all have to come together as a pack to work through the loss of so many loved ones. “I really thought we were finding peace,” Dustin says, as we gather together three days later. “I hoped it would stay.”“We’ll find that now,” I tell him. “There are always going to be times of peace and times of conflict. I’ve learned we have to accept that as a way of life. That’s the downside of being in a wolf pack.“But the good days outnumber the bad. And we’re strong, we’re fierce. We’ll get through this and defeat any enemies that might come up next. We just have to trust in each other and have faith in the pack.”The words resonate with me as I say them. Despite all the hardships, I’m more devoted to this pack than I ever have been. I’ve learned to accept the ups and downs which are easier to manage now that things between Lucas and I don’t feel quite as fragile.“That’s why you’re a great leader,” Dustin says. “You inspire us all to do just

LucasAs I watch my baby in Sarah’s arms, I’m happier than I ever thought I’d be. A son and a daughter. It feels like now our family is complete. Though I’m open to more children in the future. Right now, I’m just content.Sarah and I tend to be rough sleepers though. So, as Sarah dozes off, I take Evelyn from her arms and place her in the bassinet. Then, I join Sarah on the bed.“She’s beautiful,” I say, cuddling my sleepy mate. “You’re beautiful. I’m so grateful to you for bringing our children into our life like you have. “I know it’s never easy. I won’t even pretend to understand what you go through. But you give up so much for our family. I appreciate that more than I can express.”“And I appreciate you,” she says. “You’re a wonderful father and a fantastic husband. I’m so glad to share all of this with you. I’m so grateful to be building a family with you.”I kiss her and the warmth of having my true mate in my life envelopes me. It just feels so natural and right when y

Sarah“That is an incredible offer,” I say, my eyes staring right into Azar’s. “You’ve promised so much, and I know we’d both prosper within a formed alliance. However, we can’t promise our daughter’s hand in marriage.”My words prompt a hearty response. Some are mere whispers while others are outright defiant. Many can’t believe that we would turn away from this. But we have to do what’s right for our daughter.“Now, I’m not shutting down the idea of a future marriage completely,” I clarify. “Maybe our daughter will end up with your son. Maybe they will be mates.“But we’ll have to wait and see once she’s old enough to decide. Since we’ll be allies regardless, they’ll know each other. They can spend time together.“If our daughter decides that your son is her mate and they both love each other, then they can get married. We’re going to leave that up to her though. We don’t want to make such a big decision for her before she can even consent to it.”Azar’s demeanor falls. It re

As her mate, I have reason to be upset. The guilt still haunts me though. It reminds me of how I hurt her. It whispers that I deserve this. I know that I deserve this.“It’s nothing,” I insist.“Lucas, please open up to me,” she says. She takes my hand in hers and looks at me with those eyes I never can resist. “I saw you and Azar last night,” I confess. “I saw the kiss.”Sarah looks at me with shock and guilt written upon her face. I hate that. It’s proof that what I saw was true. They did kiss. She betrayed me.“I know I betrayed you horribly,” I continue. “So, I understand that I deserve that. But it still hurts, Sarah. “I thought we had moved past all of that. I thought we were solid. I thought we weren’t ever going to let anyone get between us again. I have tried to push aside my fears that he wants to seduce Sarah and getting to know them all a little better has helped me to do so.My daughter though… I never thought he’d be after my daughter. Arranged marriage? “That’s a big topic,” Sarah says slowly. “We’d definitely need time to think about it further. We’d have to talk through this amongst ourselves.”“Of course,” Azar replies with a pleasant smile. “I’m not trying to force your hand or anything. Take as much time as you need. It is a big decision but I think it’s the right one.”We don’t stay out much longer than that. We circle back to the gathering for a little while. But everyone is tired, so we all head back home soon after. It’s only once we’re back home that every

SarahI take a moment to give Lucas a hug and another kiss before we step into the area where the feast is being hosted. I can sense that he’s still a little insecure about things, but he had no reason to worry. I’m going to be true to him always.I’ll admit though, I am intrigued by this new pack. I wonder about the kinds of magic they can do. I’m curious about all they have to offer. As we walk towards their Alpha, the pack starts to congregate together, which is a little strange. Before this, they were mingling with everyone else. There seems to be a shift though as we approach them.“We’re so grateful you’ve accepted us,” Azar says, flashing that friendly smile. Is there anything flirtatious about it? I don’t really think so.“To show our gratitude, we would like to show you something,” he continues. “A little show before dinner.”I hesitate. What if this is something malicious? I don’t know anything about this pack. Is it a trap? They’re already here though. They could tr

LucasAfter everything else that’s happened, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t worried about this new pack joining us. It’s not like it’s uncommon for packs to approach each other, especially if they think a mutually beneficial alliance can be formed. The fact that packs are now approaching us like this shows our growth. I’m proud of Sarah for bringing this pack to greatness like this. I’m happy to welcome newcomers in.It’s just that there’s been a lot going on lately. And it still seems like a risk to allow anyone new to come into this peaceful place we created. Then, I realize that I’m sounding a bit like how Liza sounded when we brought Brandon in. It gives me more empathy towards her but also makes me realize that maybe I’m being a bit paranoid. It will be good to have another alliance. This could ultimately be beneficial to us. So, I help answer questions as the pack follows us. I remain as engaging as possible as I get to know them.“You’ve truly created something impres

But I never expected something like this.Could it be true?I assume it is considering the way this prophecy has been delivered. What does it mean though? How do we deal with something like this? Before we can ask any questions, the bubble floats off into the sky which grows lighter again. The lights turn back on. The candles are re-lit.Lucas and I look to each other as everyone looks to us for answers. Yet I’m stumped. Usually I know what to say, but not this time.“I have no idea where that came from,” I admit. I’ve found that when it comes to being Alpha, the best way to approach these sorts of things is from a place of honesty. “However, I can say that I feel blessed.“It’s clear our daughter will be special. I don’t know exactly what that means yet, but we will take care of her to the best of our ability. We’ll cherish her just as we do Fergus. We’ll
