Emma’s POV

My mom and I hadn’t been close in a while. We weren’t the kind of family that shared Sunday dinners or spoke every day on the phone like normal family members did.

My mom had gotten me from the orphanage when I was younger and we moved to a small farm in the rural Southeast, where life was easy and simple, peaceful even.

Back then, it felt like the world was no bigger than our little house and the fields out front. But when I left for the city, that life started to feel distant.

We grew apart, little by little, until our conversations were just polite check-ins on birthdays or holidays. She didn’t approve of the choices I’d made. Especially when I told her I was marrying Sebastian. We'd had a huge argument about that.

"He’s not right for you," she had told me, coldly. "You come from two different worlds, Emma. You’re just doing this because of Matthew."

Her words stung then, and they still stung now, because for the first time, she was right and I hated that.

Emma's POV“How did you know I was here?” I demanded loudly with a frown. My heart was pounding so loudly I was sure he could hear it.Sebastian stood there, his hands stuffed in the pockets of his leather jacket, looking way too casual for someone who shouldn’t even be here.“Jenny guessed you’d be at Abigail’s and we'll, here you are,” he replied hesitantly, his voice low, but his eyes, those deep gray eyes, never left my face. My stomach twisted at the mention of mom. Of course, she’d tell him. She always thought she knew what was best for everyone, but this? I thought she hated him for me so why would she tell him where I could be.“I can't believe you actually went to see her. Well, congratulations to her for being right. Now leave.” I crossed my arms tightly over my chest. “I don’t need you here, Sebastian. You shouldn't even be here. We’re divorced, remember?” I stepped forward and pushed him toward the door, but he didn’t budge. He stood there like a statue, his shoulders

Emma’s POVSebastian’s grip loosened once Abigail spoke, just slightly, but it was enough. My heart was racing, and my body moved before I could think. I drove my elbow back as hard as I could, aiming for his stomach. It connected. Sebastian let out a low grunt, staggering back a step, his arms falling away from me as he clutched his abdomen. "Emma!" he gasped, but I didn’t wait to hear whatever excuse or plea he was about to throw at me.I turned and practically bolted to Alex, my legs shaky and weak. Without even pausing to think, I looped my arm through his, clinging to him like he was my saviour or something. My eyes went to Abigail who looked like she was enjoying this. My eyes moved back to Sebastian and I took a deep breath before speaking."Let me introduce you," I said, my voice sharper than I’d intended but loud enough to make Sebastian focus on me. I looked straight at Sebastian, whose face was twisted with a mix of pain and confusion. "This is my boyfriend." Sebastia

Emma’s POVI stared at the long string of numbers on my phone screen, my stomach twisting. I felt bile rise in my throat. The number Abigail had told me was so big it didn't sound real, like it was part of some prank or something. But it wasn’t. It was sitting there, right in Abigail's gallery’s fundraising account, a direct deposit from Sebastian. What the hell was he up to? My thumb hovered over my phone for half a second before I gave in, scrolling to his number and pressing call.He picked up after barely one ring, like he’d been sitting there, waiting for me to call…to cave. "Finally calling me back?" His voice was low, smooth, and tinged with just enough smugness to make my anger rise.I gripped the phone so tightly my knuckles turned white. "What game are you playing, Sebastian? What do you want?" He chuckled softly, the sound only making my blood boil. "Game? I have no idea what you’re talking about. I just saw your art gallery was fundraising and looked a little short

Emma’s POV He was sitting at one of the low tables meant for the kids, holding a brightly colored wax crayon between his fingers, twirling it like he had every right to be here. The kids sitting beside him were watching him with wide, curious eyes. A few of them giggled, while one brave little boy reached out to poke Sebastian’s arm. Sebastian didn’t even flinch. My grip tightened on the edge of my canvas as I stood frozen at the front of the room, staring at him like he was some kind of alien who had just crash-landed in the middle of my life. And I didn't like this alien at all."What are you doing here?" I finally managed to get out lowly, to avoid scaring the children. "Please leave." Sebastian looked up at me, completely unbothered. He shrugged, setting the crayon down on the table with a certain ease that made my blood boil. His other hand rested on the back of his chair, his expensive-looking watch glinting under the lights as he leaned back slightly. "Since you've refu

Emma’s POVThe art class finally ended, and I exhaled in relief. Today had already been long enough and I couldn't wait for it to end.I mean I loved the kids but Sebastian had only made today stressful for me. The kids had already started packing up their things immediately I told them the class was over. Sebastian raised his voice just enough to be heard over the noise. "Come on, kids, say goodbye to Teacher Emma!" "Goodbye, Teacher!" they all flocked around me and chorused, their tiny hands waving as they ran towards the door like they would get an award for whoever reaches there first.I forced a smile and waved back, though my chest ached from everything that was happening, especially the man standing a few feet away from me.As the last kid disappeared into the hallway, silence fell over the room. Just me and Sebastian now. The air felt heavier somehow. It was suffocating and uncomfortable and I just wanted him to leave as soon as possible.I focused on the scattered art su

Emma’s POV"Sebastian, what’s wrong?" My voice shook as I crouched beside him on the floor, my heart pounding so hard it physically hurt, badly. He clutched at his own chest, his hand trembling, his face pale and drenched in sweat. His lips moved, but at first, no sound came out. Finally, in a voice so weak it was barely audible, he gasped, "My heart… hurts." I froze for a second. The heart transplant surgery from three years ago. Oh God. No. This had never happened before, was he having complications? My own heart beat faster at that."Sebastian, stay with me," I said, my voice still shaky as I fumbled to pull my phone out of my pocket. My fingers shook so much I almost dropped it. I jabbed at the screen, dialing emergency services. "911, what’s your emergency?" came a voice on the other end."Umm.. there's someone here….he collapsed and I don't know what to do," I stammered, barely able to get the words out. "He had a heart transplant three years ago, and now he’s saying his hea

Emma’s POVI didn’t even think. My feet moved before my brain could think, and I found myself chasing after Ava, my heart pounding with anger and fear."Ava!" I called as I closed the distance between us. She stopped in her tracks, slowly turning to face me, her lips curling into that same annoying smug, cryptic smile she always had on."Well, well," she said, tilting her head as she looked me up and down. "What do you want, Emma?" Her tone was so mocking it made my anger increase.I stepped in front of her, blocking her path. "What’s your deal, Ava? What are you trying to pull here?" Her smile widened, and she crossed her arms casually. "Me? Oh nothing, I’m just observing," she said, "But you seem a little… tense. Feeling guilty, maybe?" Her words made my stomach twist, but I forced myself to stay calm. Losing it on her here wasn’t going to help. I took a deep breath and tried to keep my voice steady. "Ava, just tell me, how much did you hear?" She raised an eyebrow, her expres

Emma’s POVIt felt like everywhere was full of noise. I walked into the studio feeling like I was barely breathing. I was looking at the gallery, but I wasn't looking at the artwork at all.My heartbeat continued to blare in my ears.My body felt weak; I was tired. It was way more than physical exhaustion. I was also emotionally tired and felt empty."Emma?" Abigail called out as she took in what I looked like. She rushed towards me.I knew I looked terrible, and I tried to fix my appearance, but I could not bring myself to. I let her see all of my vulnerability the way I was."Emma, what is wrong," she said with a soft voice as she looked at me and reached out to hold me.It was when she held on to me that I realized that my body was trembling."Emma, you don't look good. Do you need any medical attention?" She took me to her enclosed office, where she helped me sit.She looked at me quietly and wrapped her hands around me again."You know you can tell me whatever is going on, right?

  • My Substitute Husband Regrets Letting Me Go   Chapter 65

Emma’s POV The airport buzzed with activity, a chaotic mixture of hurried footsteps, muffled announcements, and the odd crying child. The air smelled of strong coffee and the remaining scent of floor polish. People moved past me, their faces varying—excitement, exhaustion, indifference. But I barely noticed them. I stood near my boarding gate, my suitcase beside me, my hands holding the handle so tightly that my knuckles had turned white. The weight in my chest got heavier with each passing second. I told myself I wasn’t hesitant, that I wasn’t waiting for something—or someone—to stop me. But deep down, I wasn’t sure if that was true. This is it, I thought, looking at the digital sign above the gate. A new start. Paris. A city of art, a city of dreams. A place where no one knew me, where I could shed the weight of my past and finally move on. Beside me, Abigail nudged my shoulder. “You sure about this?” she asked, her voice laced with worry. I forced a small smile. “I

Emma’s POVI could hear a dull roar in the airport. As I stood next to the boarding gate, I had a little too much of a grip on my suitcase's handle. Around me, people were moving quickly: tourists dragging their bags, families saying their goodbyes through tears, and flight attendants moving with practiced speed. Even though there was a lot going on, my world felt strangely still. That was it. A one-way trip to Paris. A new start. A chance to finally leave the past behind. I let out a sigh and looked at the big digital clock above the gate to see what time it was. Fifteen minutes until boarding. Abigail moved around on her feet next to me and carefully watched me. "Are you sure you'll be okay?" I smiled at her as I looked at her. “Of course. I can handle it.” She sighed, folding her arms. “I know you can, but that doesn’t mean you should have to do it alone.” Warmth spread through me at her care. Abigail had been my rock through everything—the heartbreak, the scandal

Sebastian’s POVThere was a heavy, oppressive silence in Alex's office. It was clear from his reluctance that he was concealing something. I leaned forward and spoke in a steady, low voice. "Alex, please tell me the truth." Alex rubbed his temples and let out a short exhale before looking up at me. He hesitated out of remorse, not merely reluctance. Finally, in a tight voice, he stated, "There are things you don't understand." I sat back and scoffed. "Then explain things to me." I was becoming impatient. Since I arrived, you have been evading my queries. The procedure was discussed first, and now this. To Emma, who was Matthew? And why did she go? Alex's mouth clenched. Before he finally let out a breath, his shoulders slumped as though the truth was too much for him to bear any longer, his fingers drumming against the surface. "I've always harboured affections for Emma." It was an insult to the face. My nails dug into my hands as my fingers balled into fists. "What

Sebastian’s POVI fiddled with my sleeve's cuff, my fingers resting on the silky material for longer than was necessary. Long shadows were thrown against the dark wood furnishings in my study as the morning light poured through the floor-to-ceiling windows. As I collected the last papers and carefully placed them in my briefcase, I let out a long sigh.My scheduled heart checkup occurred today, which was a necessary annoyance. The sterile air, the whispered conversations, and the continual reminder of vulnerability were all reasons why I had always hated hospitals. But I was unable to dodge this check-up. Despite my desire for it, my body was not invincible.I had just closed my briefcase when I heard footsteps approaching softly. Our son was in the arms of Ava when she emerged from the doorway. With pure curiosity, he reached out to the world with his small fingers, curling and uncurling."Are you going to the hospital right now?" she inquired, moving the infant a little to repositio

  • My Substitute Husband Regrets Letting Me Go   Chapter 61

Emma's POVThe chilly night air hit me like a slap as soon as I left the venue, but it was insufficient to quench the scalding embarrassment that was creeping up my spine. Even though the crowd's whispers were muffled by my pounding heart, I could still feel their eyes on me as they scrutinized, questioned, and dissected me as though I were just tonight's gossip. My skin felt hot, and I felt like I was turning red by the second.Like a caged bird yearning for escape, my heart pounded against my ribs as I sped through the sea of people. My throat tightened as I resisted the bile that was rising in my stomach, and I breathed in short gasps. With every hurried step, my elegant heels dug into my skin, but I didn't mind. All I had to do was leave. With a creak, the bathroom door opened, and I staggered inside, holding on to the cool porcelain sink for balance. I felt my stomach heave and twist furiously, but nothing came out. Just gut-wrenching, empty convulsions that left me gasping for a

Sebastian's POVPower is a peculiar entity. With just a phone call, you can change the world around you, make things your way, and destroy someone else's work, yet feelings cannot be erased. It cannot take away the smothering pain in my chest and the flaming anger I felt when I glanced at Emma across the floor. Her pride, her passion, her evidence of existence, her painting was gone. She also realized that I was to blame. She turned slowly, her face unimpressed, but I could see that her fingers were trembling a little. The long breath she took as though fortifying herself. "You did this," she said in a whisper. A declaration rather than a query. Swirling the whiskey in my glass, I shrugged. "Does it matter?" She opened her mouth slightly, but she didn't make a sound. Unshed tears glistened in her dark eyes as the golden brightness of the chandelier reflected in them. Her eyes briefly blazed with something: hurt, betrayal, and tiredness. And then she blinked it away as fa

Emma's POVIt was a calm drive home.I leaned my head against the window and observed the city lights flickering by. I felt the vibrations of the world outside as my fingers delicately touched the cool glass. The wind carried the little smell of rain through the window's tiny opening. "You shouldn't do that," Abigail spoke in a soft yet forceful tone. Her eyes flickered toward me as I turned my head slightly, then back to the road. "Do what?" Even though I already understood what she meant, I asked. She let out a sigh. "Keep the window open in that manner. It's bad for both you and the unborn child." After a moment of hesitation, I rolled up the window. Once more, there was quiet between us. I could feel Abigail's eyes hovering over me every few seconds as she continued to drive. She waited for me to say something. I didn't. Instead, I allowed my thoughts to stray to Gloria's harsh remarks, to the department store, to the baby clothes I had chosen. She treated me like tr

Sebastian’s POV My father's remarks hung in the air like an unresolved storm, and the living room fell eerily silent. "You’re making a mistake." I rubbed the bridge of my nose as I slowly breathed. It had been a tiring conversation—Raymond always managed to get past my well-constructed barriers. But what was it he thought I would do? Go after Emma? She had decided. I was now creating mine. When I looked up, I saw my father going back inside with an unreadable expression as the front door creaked open once more. "Changed your mind?" I mumbled, immediately grabbing for the whiskey glass I had left behind. Raymond took a while to reply. With a groan, he approached the couch and took a seat, closely observing me. "You plan to follow through on all of this? "Are you certain?" he inquired at last. Before responding, I took a slow sip of my beverage and let the warmth to burn down my throat. "I don’t know what you mean." Raymond gave a dry laugh. "Son, don't act foolis

Sebastian’s POVThe living room was bathed in a golden glow as the morning light came through the drapes. With a cup of black coffee in my hand, I sat on the couch and gazed at the unfinished meal on the table. My thoughts were elsewhere.Emma.Her voice was still echoing in my mind, piercing and far away, a wound I hadn't yet healed."Let's not drag this out, Sebastian. You must go on. I've done so already. We cannot continue in this manner."I tightened my grasp on the coffee mug and gritted my jaw.She had spoken so icily, like though she didn't care about me. She seemed like a completely different person. As if she had changed from the person I knew. She was pushing me away for a reason I couldn't see, and I wanted to think it was a lie. What option did I have, though, after everything—after Ava's pregnancy, the divorce, and her inability to stand up for us?"Sebastian," Ava said, interrupting my train of thought.I looked up to see her standing in the doorway, looking as present
