SEBASTIAN'S POV

I pushed the door open, my heart in my throat as I stepped into the hospital room. My eyes immediately landed on them.

Emma and Alex, locked in an embrace.

They didn’t even notice me at first. My breath caught, and for a second, I couldn’t move. Then the words just came out of me, louder than I intended.

“What the hell is going on here?”

Emma jerked back from Alex, her wide eyes snapping to mine. But instead of looking guilty or surprised, her expression hardened in an instant.

Her lips pressed into a thin line, and her glare became so cold. If looks really could kill, I'd be five feet underground right now.

“Sebastian,” she said sharply, like she was speaking to someone she hated, “please leave.”

Leave? Why would she ask me to leave and not Jace? Or did she make a mistake? I stared at her, still trying to process what I’d just walked in on.

My mind was spinning, my chest tightened as I stared at her cold eyes.“What..why are you in the hospital?” I asked, my voice crac

EMMA'S POVJust minutes after Sebastian stormed out of the room, the door opened again, but this time it wasn’t him, fortunately.A man in a suit stepped inside, holding a leather briefcase that screamed business. My lawyer. I sat up straighter, wiping my clammy hands on my blanket as he approached me with a calm, professional expression. He handed me the stack of papers without saying much, just a polite nod as if he knew words weren’t necessary. My eyes landed on the white divorce agreement in my lap, and for a moment, I just stared at it.My chest felt tight and it hurt. It felt like I was ending an important part of my life but beneath all of that, there was something else. Determination. This was it.This was the clean break I needed. No more back and forth, no more second-guessing or waiting for Sebastian to explain himself. No more hoping for something that would never come. No more Ava and Sebastian. This couldn't drag on any longer, the sooner I signed, the lesser my pain wou

Emma’s POV Both Sebastian and the doctor’s eyes fell on the letters at the top of the document, Divorce agreement. Everywhere became tense as they both read the document. The doctor cleared his throat, his face a mix of discomfort and pity, like he’d walked into a drama he desperately wanted no part of. “Sir, I’ve done what I need to do here. You two can carry on,” he said stiffly, his voice polite but rushed. He didn’t even meet my eyes as he edged toward the door. I couldn’t blame him. Who’d want to stick around for this? The silence that followed after the doctor left was suffocating and unbearable. Sebastian didn’t say anything at first; he just stood there, still staring at the document in his hands. His jaw tightened, and his eyes…God, those eyes I used to get lost in, shifted to me, filled with something I couldn’t quite place. Finally, he spoke, his voice low. “I won’t sign it.” My stomach twisted at his words, the anger I'd been holding back earlier returning again

Sebastian’s POV Separate? Divorce? I couldn’t process the words. My mind spinned as I stared at Emma, who stood in front of me with tears running down her face. Had I really pushed her to do this? Was this really all my fault?“Sebastian, I just need your signature, and it will all be over,” she said, her voice breaking on the last word. Her teary eyes stared straight at me. The determination in her stare was like a wall I couldn’t climb, and yet all I wanted was to break through it…break through to her. Before I could even open my mouth to respond, she turned abruptly, her sobs muffled as she buried her face in her hands. And then she ran…ran like she couldn’t stand to be near me for even another second. “Emma, wait!” I called out, but my voice barely escaped my throat. My legs felt weak and like they were glued to the spot as I watched her disappear down the hallway, her figure rounding the corner.Fuck, what have I done?I looked down at the crumpled divorce agreement in my h

Sebastian’s POV “Really? That’s great!” Ava’s voice was practically bubbling with excitement, her tone so cheerful and over-the-top that it made my stomach twist.I stared at her, trying to make sense of it, but all I could feel was this growing unease. Why did she sound so…happy? She shouldn't be happy? I literally just told her Emma and I were getting a divorce, or she didn't hear me well? Was this something that happened to ladies after giving birth?I frowned, my voice dropping as I asked, “You’re seriously happy that Emma and I are breaking up?” Ava sat up in her hospital bed, her energy catching me off guard. Her eyes were bright, almost too bright, and the faint smile on her lips didn’t sit right with me.“Seb,” she said like it was the most obvious thing in the world, “don’t you see it? We’re the perfect match. We always have been. When I left, you used Emma as my replacement. You know that. And now that I’m back, we can finally be together….like we were meant to. Like we

EMMA'S POVI was sitting cross-legged on the floor of the living room, a mess of clothes and half-packed boxes scattered around me. It felt like my hands were moving on autopilot, folding and tucking things into the boxes. But inside? I felt empty. Like, completely hollow. I couldn't even think about anything, not Sebastian, not Ava, nothing at all.I thought I’d be angry, or sad, or something. But there was just this heavy numbness that made it hard to even think straight. My phone buzzed on the coffee table, lighting up with a notification. I didn't want to talk to anybody right now. I sighed and leaned over to grab it.It was a photo from Ava. How did she even get my number?I stared at it for a moment. It was Sebastian, holding a pair of scissors, his face all serious and focused as he cut the umbilical cord for Ava’s baby.He looked... I don’t know, gentle, I guess. Almost like the Seb I used to know. I kept waiting for some big emotion to hit me, jealousy, heartbreak, anger, bu

EMMA'S POV“No,” I said immediately, my voice a lot firmer than I'd expected, though my chest still hurt. “I’ve let go. For me, this marriage has reached its end and there's no reason to continue it.” Raymond just sat there, his eyes softening as he looked at me. For a moment, I thought he might try to argue, to convince me to reconsider like any normal person would. But instead, he nodded slowly, letting out a quiet sigh. “You’re a good girl, Emma,” he said, his voice low and I could hear the sincerity in it.Hearing that, my throat tightened, and suddenly, it was like all the emotions I’d been trying to push down returned quickly. My chest ached, and I could feel the sting of tears in my eyes. I quickly blinked, not wanting to cry. I'd promised myself not to cry for anything related to Sebastian. But it was too late, my vision blurred slightly, and I had to look away. I don’t even know what came over me, but before I realized it, I stepped forward and wrapped my arms around hi

EMMA'S POV“I can’t believe Sebastian turned out to be such a scumbag. Getting a divorce is definitely the right choice!” Abigail said angrily, as she slammed her fist on the gallery’s wooden table.A muffled thud echoed through the room, and the art supplies scattered across the table rattled. A jar of paintbrushes nearly tipped over, but she didn’t seem to care. I flinched slightly at the sound, but I didn’t look up. My fingers curled tightly around the cup of water in my hands. I stared down into it, watching the faint ripples from my shaky grip. “I don’t want to talk about him anymore, Abigail,” I said softly, barely above a whisper. Abigail’s features softened for a second, like she regretted the outburst, but then she nodded firmly. “You’re right,” she said lightly. “No more talking about him! He’s not worth our time.”She glanced over at me, her lips twitching into a small smirk like she was trying to pull me out of my depression. “How about this, tonight, we go to a bar,

SEBASTIAN'S POVThe tires screeched slightly as I turned the corner, driving faster than I probably should have. My hands gripped the steering wheel tightly, my knuckles white.I tried to keep my breathing steady, but my chest felt tight. Impatient wasn’t even the right word for what I was feeling, I was on edge. I wanted to get home as soon as possible.I didn’t even know what I was expecting when I got home. Maybe I thought Emma would still be there, that I could finally get her to talk to me. Maybe I could fix this, or at least try. I need to try. I didn't want us to separate. I wanted…needed her. When I pulled into the driveway, the door was slightly open, and my heart jumped. She had to be inside. She hadn’t left yet. Relief flooded through me, and I practically bolted out of the car. But when I stepped into the house, I froze. My dad was sitting on the sofa. His posture was stiff, his face stern and unreadable as usual, but his eyes, there was something else. Anger, maybe di

Emma’s POVI didn’t even think. My feet moved before my brain could think, and I found myself chasing after Ava, my heart pounding with anger and fear."Ava!" I called as I closed the distance between us. She stopped in her tracks, slowly turning to face me, her lips curling into that same annoying smug, cryptic smile she always had on."Well, well," she said, tilting her head as she looked me up and down. "What do you want, Emma?" Her tone was so mocking it made my anger increase.I stepped in front of her, blocking her path. "What’s your deal, Ava? What are you trying to pull here?" Her smile widened, and she crossed her arms casually. "Me? Oh nothing, I’m just observing," she said, "But you seem a little… tense. Feeling guilty, maybe?" Her words made my stomach twist, but I forced myself to stay calm. Losing it on her here wasn’t going to help. I took a deep breath and tried to keep my voice steady. "Ava, just tell me, how much did you hear?" She raised an eyebrow, her expres

Emma’s POV"Sebastian, what’s wrong?" My voice shook as I crouched beside him on the floor, my heart pounding so hard it physically hurt, badly. He clutched at his own chest, his hand trembling, his face pale and drenched in sweat. His lips moved, but at first, no sound came out. Finally, in a voice so weak it was barely audible, he gasped, "My heart… hurts." I froze for a second. The heart transplant surgery from three years ago. Oh God. No. This had never happened before, was he having complications? My own heart beat faster at that."Sebastian, stay with me," I said, my voice still shaky as I fumbled to pull my phone out of my pocket. My fingers shook so much I almost dropped it. I jabbed at the screen, dialing emergency services. "911, what’s your emergency?" came a voice on the other end."Umm.. there's someone here….he collapsed and I don't know what to do," I stammered, barely able to get the words out. "He had a heart transplant three years ago, and now he’s saying his hea

Emma’s POVThe art class finally ended, and I exhaled in relief. Today had already been long enough and I couldn't wait for it to end.I mean I loved the kids but Sebastian had only made today stressful for me. The kids had already started packing up their things immediately I told them the class was over. Sebastian raised his voice just enough to be heard over the noise. "Come on, kids, say goodbye to Teacher Emma!" "Goodbye, Teacher!" they all flocked around me and chorused, their tiny hands waving as they ran towards the door like they would get an award for whoever reaches there first.I forced a smile and waved back, though my chest ached from everything that was happening, especially the man standing a few feet away from me.As the last kid disappeared into the hallway, silence fell over the room. Just me and Sebastian now. The air felt heavier somehow. It was suffocating and uncomfortable and I just wanted him to leave as soon as possible.I focused on the scattered art su

Emma’s POV He was sitting at one of the low tables meant for the kids, holding a brightly colored wax crayon between his fingers, twirling it like he had every right to be here. The kids sitting beside him were watching him with wide, curious eyes. A few of them giggled, while one brave little boy reached out to poke Sebastian’s arm. Sebastian didn’t even flinch. My grip tightened on the edge of my canvas as I stood frozen at the front of the room, staring at him like he was some kind of alien who had just crash-landed in the middle of my life. And I didn't like this alien at all."What are you doing here?" I finally managed to get out lowly, to avoid scaring the children. "Please leave." Sebastian looked up at me, completely unbothered. He shrugged, setting the crayon down on the table with a certain ease that made my blood boil. His other hand rested on the back of his chair, his expensive-looking watch glinting under the lights as he leaned back slightly. "Since you've refu

Emma’s POVI stared at the long string of numbers on my phone screen, my stomach twisting. I felt bile rise in my throat. The number Abigail had told me was so big it didn't sound real, like it was part of some prank or something. But it wasn’t. It was sitting there, right in Abigail's gallery’s fundraising account, a direct deposit from Sebastian. What the hell was he up to? My thumb hovered over my phone for half a second before I gave in, scrolling to his number and pressing call.He picked up after barely one ring, like he’d been sitting there, waiting for me to call…to cave. "Finally calling me back?" His voice was low, smooth, and tinged with just enough smugness to make my anger rise.I gripped the phone so tightly my knuckles turned white. "What game are you playing, Sebastian? What do you want?" He chuckled softly, the sound only making my blood boil. "Game? I have no idea what you’re talking about. I just saw your art gallery was fundraising and looked a little short

Emma’s POVSebastian’s grip loosened once Abigail spoke, just slightly, but it was enough. My heart was racing, and my body moved before I could think. I drove my elbow back as hard as I could, aiming for his stomach. It connected. Sebastian let out a low grunt, staggering back a step, his arms falling away from me as he clutched his abdomen. "Emma!" he gasped, but I didn’t wait to hear whatever excuse or plea he was about to throw at me.I turned and practically bolted to Alex, my legs shaky and weak. Without even pausing to think, I looped my arm through his, clinging to him like he was my saviour or something. My eyes went to Abigail who looked like she was enjoying this. My eyes moved back to Sebastian and I took a deep breath before speaking."Let me introduce you," I said, my voice sharper than I’d intended but loud enough to make Sebastian focus on me. I looked straight at Sebastian, whose face was twisted with a mix of pain and confusion. "This is my boyfriend." Sebastia

Emma's POV“How did you know I was here?” I demanded loudly with a frown. My heart was pounding so loudly I was sure he could hear it.Sebastian stood there, his hands stuffed in the pockets of his leather jacket, looking way too casual for someone who shouldn’t even be here.“Jenny guessed you’d be at Abigail’s and we'll, here you are,” he replied hesitantly, his voice low, but his eyes, those deep gray eyes, never left my face. My stomach twisted at the mention of mom. Of course, she’d tell him. She always thought she knew what was best for everyone, but this? I thought she hated him for me so why would she tell him where I could be.“I can't believe you actually went to see her. Well, congratulations to her for being right. Now leave.” I crossed my arms tightly over my chest. “I don’t need you here, Sebastian. You shouldn't even be here. We’re divorced, remember?” I stepped forward and pushed him toward the door, but he didn’t budge. He stood there like a statue, his shoulders

Emma’s POVMy mom and I hadn’t been close in a while. We weren’t the kind of family that shared Sunday dinners or spoke every day on the phone like normal family members did.My mom had gotten me from the orphanage when I was younger and we moved to a small farm in the rural Southeast, where life was easy and simple, peaceful even.Back then, it felt like the world was no bigger than our little house and the fields out front. But when I left for the city, that life started to feel distant. We grew apart, little by little, until our conversations were just polite check-ins on birthdays or holidays. She didn’t approve of the choices I’d made. Especially when I told her I was marrying Sebastian. We'd had a huge argument about that."He’s not right for you," she had told me, coldly. "You come from two different worlds, Emma. You’re just doing this because of Matthew." Her words stung then, and they still stung now, because for the first time, she was right and I hated that. After the

She was walking with this air of confidence like the world belonged to her even though it didn't.A caretaker trailed beside her, pushing a stroller that looked like it cost more than my first car. Or my second.Abigail nudged me with her elbow, her face scrunched up in confusion. "What are you staring at? Do you know her?" she whispered. I didn’t look away, my eyes locked on Ava as she paused near the desk to adjust her bag. "That’s Ava," I said quietly, but even I could hear the bitterness in my voice. "She’s the reason Sebastian and I ended up like this. The one who'd been staying with us." Abigail’s face darkened immediately, her lips pressing together in a thin line.
