“How was your night, sweetie?” Mother asked with a wide smile over breakfast.

“Wow, so you remember me?” Was the snarky reply at the tip of my tongue, but I struggled to bite it down, because the last thing I wanted this morning was drama.

“Fine,” I replied offhandedly instead.

“Ellie, I was thinking. Do you have any college in mind?” Daniel, who was already dressed up and ready to leave the house, asked.

I shook my head no, nibbling lightly on my French toast.

“Hmmm. The state college of Wisconsin would be just fine, don’t you think?” He turned to my mother, who was beaming. “I have a lot of friends there, and application wouldn’t be a problem for you.”

“Ouuu, I heard they have great undergraduate programs, and I’m sure you’ll enjoy…..”

I dropped my cutlery harder than I expected, and the couple stared at me, mother with dissatisfaction, and Daniel with….well, concern.

“I still have a lot of time before I have to decide,” I forced the words out of my mouth.
