Emily. Yes, I was happy to see her; I was grateful that she was alive and well, even though currently she was being treated like an animal, but at least she was alright. However, seeing her with Carter brought back bad memories. Looking at them together, all I could think about was the kiss they shared, the harsh words Emily had said to me the next day at school.

I walked forward and slumped in the seat next to Silas. There was food on the table, probably meant for Emily. Even though it was still just green salad, I reached for it and filled my mouth with it, chewing rather loudly just to irritate them.

"What the fuck, are you an animal?" Silas was the easiest to offend. He looked at me like I had gone crazy.

"Maybe if you had remembered to feed me, I wouldn't be this hungry."

"You ate not long ago."

"I ate in the fucking morning. I don't know about you, but humans need to eat at least twice a day!" I told him angrily.

Silas was taken aback by my behavior, and so was Emily if the shocked expression on her face was anything to go by. Carter, however, was looking at me; his face didn't give away any emotion, but I could see the spark in his eyes. We made eye contact, and I found myself unable to say anything. Carter wouldn't remember me anyway, but I was still very happy to see him. If only I could get to him, then he would have been of better help than Silas, who at this point was just annoying the hell out of me.

I was starting to think that I was indeed a toy to him; he was loving to me when we were having sex, but as soon as that was over, it was like I became something irrelevant to him. It made me pissed and disappointed at the same time. How was I supposed to make him remember? I had mentioned countless times the relationship we shared; my mom and his dad were even together, but then again he had no idea she was my mom, and he wasn't very happy with the fact that his father was dating a human.

I was stuck; even though it's only been a few days, I felt like I was already losing myself. Was I to sit around and be his sex toy? Would I ever be able to fix things? How would I even know what to fix if I didn't know where the problem came from? All I knew was that there was an organization of aged vampires who decided that they didn't want to coexist with humans anymore, so they wiped our memories and the memories of those vampires who had protested against the idea.

Now they had what they wanted. Humans were enslaved, and Vampires ruled. But where did the Incubuses, ghouls, and others go? Did the vampires also wipe away their memories? Deric hadn't said anything about them; I was worried that something bad might have happened to Matt.

"Are you even listening?" I felt a pain in my wrist, which brought me out of my thought. Silas was glaring at me. I looked down to see that he had pinched me.

"Try to act decent in front of the guest, please."

"Uh, okay. My name is Kerry."

Carter was still looking at me; occasionally his gaze would flicker to Silas. There was an emotion in his eyes that I couldn't decipher.

"Carter, and this is my... well, she is Emily."

Emily only gave a nod before going back to her food. Silas spoke up once more. "Carter is here for some business; he will be in the palace until tomorrow morning."

I didn't see how that had anything to do with me; however, Silas was looming at me like he expected me to make something out of that information. Carter was staying the night with Emily, probably in the same room.

I already knew now that my heart belonged to Silas, but it didn't mean I couldn't still be jealous. At one time I had thought that Carter and I had something special, but maybe that was just my wishful thinking. We couldn't be together; not as long as I knew Carter still had feelings for Emily. He wouldn't have kissed her if he didn't want to; I refuse to believe she had initiated it. It takes two to kiss, right?

"You will keep him company?"

"Excuse me?" I glared at Silas in confusion. What the hell does keeping him company mean?

"What the hell does that mean?"

"It means you will go with him and do whatever he tells you to. It's not that hard to figure out."

Silas rose from his seat and turned to leave without waiting for my response. "I'll see you tomorrow."

I was left alone in the room with Carter and Emily. I swallowed the food in my mouth and couldn't bring myself to eat anymore. I felt anxiety and confusion; I still didn't know exactly what Silas meant. Perhaps he was just asking me to help Carter and Emily settle in, maybe help them make their beds or whatever. I knew there were several Servants here, but maybe it was because it was nighttime and they were in bed now.

Alright, as long as it was nothing too tedious, I could do it, and it would be an opportunity to talk to Carter some more. We didn't say anything to each other. Carter just stared at me blankly, and I glared down at my food. Emily watched us both with curious eyes; to say it was the most awkward thing ever would be an understatement.

Soon a vampire dressed in a fancy suit came to us; he led the three of us through the hallways and towards the guest quarters. I watched as Emily was led to one of the rooms; Carter held her and whispered something in her ear, which caused her to smile before she disappeared into the room.

Did I ignore that action? Yes, but did it make my blood boil? Also yes. I had no idea what Emily was to Carter now, but it definitely wasn't just a blood bank; you wouldn't look at your blood bank the way Carter looked at her. Once again I was jealous, not necessarily of them but of the fact that despite not having his memories, Carter still treated Emily well, while my brother treated me like shit! If we weren't in bed, that is.

"This is your bedroom for the night. I hope you have a pleasant rest."

The butler said he gave me a meaningful look before walking off. Carter pushed the door open and entered the room. He stood in the doorway, watching me expectantly; clearly, he expected me to follow.

I didn't see Carter as a threat, so I did. The room was big, a lot similar to my own, except the curtains were darker, and they were drawn down so not even the moonlight got in. But at least there were candles lit up in the room; it was dim but still enough for us to see each other.

"What do you want me to do?" I asked him as he closed the door and turned to look at me. "Make the bed? Dust the floors? What?"

"You don't know why you are here?" He said with a slight frown on his face.

"Of course not. Silas asked me to come with you; he didn't tell me what I was supposed to clean."

"You won't be cleaning anything."

"Then...why am I here?"

He took a step towards me. I remained where I stood despite how intimidated I felt. This was Carter, my childhood friend and first boyfriend, but he wasn't the Carter I knew. The warm air around him, which I always enjoyed, was nowhere to be found; he didn't smile, he didn't try to make me laugh, and this wasn't my Carter at all.

But I was trying to convince myself that Silas wouldn't have sent me here if he knew Carter might hurt me. My stepbrother might be an asshole now, but he wouldn't want me dead, right?

Carter reached out a hand to cup my face; I shivered at the feel of his cold skin against mine. His eyes had changed to a bright shade of red, which meant he was having a series of emotions right now. But I also knew that their eyes got like this when they were preparing to feed, but that couldn't be the case.

"He says you are the best he has around."

"The best? Look, I honestly have no idea what you are...what are you doing?!"

My eyes widened at the feel of his cold breath against my neck. I could feel his lips against the skin. Fear sat heavy in my stomach as I brought my hand to push him away, but he didn't budge.

"You smell divine," Carter groaned as his tongue darted out to have a taste of my skin. At this point, I was shivering with fear.

"C...Carter, stop! Don't do this!"

"You are a feeder, aren't you? You've already done this before, so there's nothing to worry about. I won't take much, just a little."

Sharp fangs brushed my skin, and a horrified scream left me. Right now I was fighting him, struggling to pull myself free, but I was no match for his strength; instead, I was making him annoyed.

"Hold still."

"I am not a fucking feeder! Don't you dare bite me! Carter! Oh God! You have Emily. Emily is your feeder, right? So call her, please, please, don't bite me!"

"I love Emily," he said, like it was the most obvious thing in the world. "I could never bite her."

His words rang in my head. Love, Emily, of course, I suspected this much. But the fact that he was willing to bite me but not her broke my broke my heart. Did he think so little of me? Did I mean nothing to him? How could he remember her but not me? The sadness weighed heavily in my heart. And when I felt a sharp pain, my entire body trembled. I screamed and thrashed as Carter sank his fangs into me, feeding off of my blood. It was the second time this happened, first it was Silas and now Carter. It hurt too much

I sat there in the bath for a couple of minutes, thinking deeply about how I was going to use this piece of information to my advantage. I never thought it was possible to even kill vampires until this very moment; sure, the media would make jokes about a knife to the heart being enough to take them out, but I had tried that; it was an accident, of course, and I would never have the heart to stab someone, be it a human or a vampire.Silas had just plucked out the vegetable knife from where it had embedded in his chest and told me to stop screaming because it was more annoying than getting stabbed. I could never get that image out of my head; most people would have filed a case against me. Even though it was an accident, I had still hurt him; if he had been human, the wound would have been fatal.Anyway, this just goes to prove that a knife to the chest was not enough to kill a vampire. Silas doesn't think much of humans. They are fragile, a bit annoying, and apart from being food, they aren't good for much else. She was just another human, even if she had claimed to know him—claimed she was his sister.Silas had laughed at the ridiculousness of it. A human as his sister? How absurd. I could hardly sleep that night. It didn't help one bit that Silas had insisted on us spending the night together. I was afraid that my wild thoughts would somehow reach him. Even though he had promised me never to read my mind, I was afraid he might go back on his word, especially in a situation like this. The weight of my decision kept me awake and tense. On more than one occasion, my hand had curled around my stomach. I had imagined how my baby would look, but now I was never going to get the chance to hold him or her in my hands. I had selfishly chosen myself over the innocent child."Kerry?""Hm?" My eyes pried open. I had given up on pretending to be asleep after the first two hours. Silas had simply stated, in an unimpressed voice, how he could hear my heart beating faster; he knew when I was awake or not. Even if he didn't have his enhanced hearing, I'm sure he would be able to tell I wasn't asleep by how tense I was. The room was dark enough that I couldn't make out anything.

Did he hope I would never find out I was pregnant until I was pushing a baby out of me? I thought he loved me and had promised to always protect me no matter what, but now he had decided that he would rather protect his unborn child than me. That was a betrayal on a whole different level.I was mad at him, and honestly, I wish I could hate him enough to just fuck off entirely, maybe move away somewhere I could get my thoughts together.
