I wake up at one the next afternoon. I gasp as I jump out of bed realising that I only have two hours to prepare before the game. I check my phone and find two missed calls from Dean. He probably wanted to know if I was awake yet. I quickly take a shower and put my pyjamas back on before heading downstairs for ‘breakfast’.
“Morning, Hailee.” Dad greets me with a warm smile. I envelop him with a hug from behind with a smile. “Morning, dad.”
“You look like you’re glowing.” My mom says, laughing. I roll my eyes, trying to shift everyone’s focus from the mere blush growing on my cheeks. I sit down next to my sister who then seems irritated by it.
My mom hands me a plate with cheese and bacon sandwich. “Don’t get used to oversleeping.” I smile at her as a thank you.
I turn to Halsey. “Hey.” She only gives me a short smile and continues to eat. “Okay.” I take a bite of my sandwich, refraining from taking my phone out because I’m afraid Dean might call or text me.
After eating, I go back to my room and text Lisa to lend me a blue jean because I don’t own one and some makeup.
Me: Hey. Can you lend me your blue jeans? And perhaps bring them over? Pretty please.
Lisa: For?
Me: I’ll explain it to you when you get here. Oh, please bring your makeup box too.
Lisa: Alright, I’ll be there soon.
About an hour later, Lisa arrives. It kind of had me on edge as I was constantly looking at the time but I didn’t want to rush her. I could’ve simply gone myself and fetched the stuff. Lisa greets my family before joining me upstairs. She closes the door. I dramatically turn in her direction. “Okay, I need shady blue eye shadow, mascara, blue eyeliner, perfectly outlined lips and blue nail polish.”
Lisa looks at me as if she’s not taking a single word coming out of my mouth seriously. “We haven't even gotten to the part where you tell me what’s going on?”
I press my lips together before blurting it out. “I’m going to the Yankees game with Dean.” I quickly turn around and look for a jacket. She places her things down by my mirror.
“Oh, so you do like him. Wow!” She mockingly says with a smile.
“Shh, someone might hear you.”
Lisa laughs. “Let’s get you ready for your date.” Lisa helps me get ready, and honestly, her help has saved me a lot more time considering that I was completely off schedule. I text Dean that I’m ready and he lets me know that he’ll be here in ten minutes.
Lisa and I head downstairs together, receiving stares and a smile from my mom. “You look amazing, honey.”
“Thank you, mom. But this was all Lisa.” I say. Lisa smiles proudly. “Thanks for the credit, Hendricks.”
“My ride is here.” I say to everyone.
“Have fun!” They all wish, except for Halsey, who’s still giving me the cold shoulder and doesn’t know a thing. For now.
I get into Dean’s car, glad he didn’t park in the driveway. He hands me a cap and a shirt as promised. I take off my jacket and put the shirt on over the vest I’m wearing. I place the cap on my head and put my jacket back on.
“Ready?” Dean asks. I nod as the car roars to life. I sigh at how awful I feel for actually agreeing to take part in this.

Dean and I get top seats at the game for a better view. Everyone is already yelling and singing, ready for the game. Dean stays on his feet while I take a seat, and sings along. Dean pulls me up and wraps an arm around my shoulders. I softly hum along to the tune, not wanting to give away that I don’t know any of these songs.
I pull my phone out of my pocket and put it on silent. Dean looks at me and smiles, still singing along with the crowd. I lean closer to his ear. He bends slightly down to hear me. “You know, this feels like stabbing my sister in the back, and it sucks because she’s always looked up to me.” I shout into his ear.
He moves his arm from around me. “I’m sorry. But, I’m just trying to get over her.” He says.
I furrow my eyebrows. “So, you’re just using me?” I ask him.
He shakes his head before smiling. “No. I genuinely like you, but this is also like getting over her. Just because we broke up and I wasn’t that into her, doesn’t mean that I still don’t care about her.” He answers.
I choose to extract the best part of his answer and ignore the rest because I don’t think he was paying attention to what he was really saying. I nod and watch as the game starts.
The first half takes interesting turns and I can feel my throat start to hurt from all the cheering and shouting. Dean returns back to his seat after offering to buy us drinks. The crowd continues to sing, but this time, Dean stays seated and wraps his arm around me. I shrug it off and notice him smirking. I roll my eyes with a playful smile. Dean looks at me, placing his hand on my thigh before scooting closer to me.
“You know, you don't have to keep thinking about your sister. Just be you for the rest of the game. I brought you here so we can have fun. Also, you can keep pushing me away, but I know you want me too.” He says as he points at a screen above the field.
Everyone around us starts shouting “kiss!” Dean leans closer and I turn my head towards him, remembering my dad is watching the game along with everyone else at home. I try not to think about it, not wanting to disappoint Dean on live television and kiss him. The crowd claps and cheers.
I pull away and adjust my cap. Dean turns my face with his index finger and kisses me again after realising that we’re still on screen. I hope Halsey chose not to watch the game just like any other. An unsettling feeling rests in my stomach.
Dean pulls away with a smile. “Wasn’t so bad, was it?” He asks.
I sigh loudly and reply. “Trust me, I don’t feel so good about it anymore. Why us though?” He shifts back into his seat and moves his hand from my thigh before standing up to leave. “Hey! Where are you going?” I ask.
“Don’t worry. I’ll be back before the second half.” He answers. I nod and check my phone. I scroll through my messages and one comes in from Lisa.
Lisa: I can’t believe you kissed him on LIVE television. I’m still at your place and Halsey is fuming over this.
I turn my phone upside down and close my eyes, suddenly feeling like crying. Dean comes back with a few snacks and looks at me with a worried face after sitting down. “What’s wrong?” He asks.
I shove my phone into his chest and stand up. “Please take me home.” He looks at the text message, about to open his mouth to say something but I cut him off. “Now, Dean!” I shout, getting a few stares from the people behind us.
“Okay.” He replies, giving my phone back to me. I grab it and walk ahead of him. I get to his car and slam the door twice.
“Hey, watch it! I’m sorry your sister saw that, but if you didn't want to kiss me, you shouldn’t have. So, you can’t just blame any of it on me. Please, just relax, Hailee. You’re frustrating me.” Dean says, putting his head on his hands on the steering wheel.
I look at him and start to regret ruining our evening. I move closer to him and rub him on his back. “No, Dean. I’m sorry. I was wrong. I had a choice too, and I don’t regret it.” I admit. We look at each other. I lean in to kiss him and he meets me halfway.
Dean gently pushes me back, to give him more access. I put my hand in his hair and smile against his lips. He smiles back. We both pull away. I sigh and remove the clothes that were given to me.
“What’s wrong?” He asks confusingly.
“Nothing. I just, I’m still not sure if this is right. If it’s really what I want. I’m sorry I keep leading you on.” I look down at my Vans.
Dean leans back into his seat and starts the car. “This sucks.” He whispers, upset.
>>>
When we get to my driveway, he parks next to my dad’s car. I reach to open the door but he stops me. “Wait, what you’re doing feels unfair. Do you ever care to think how I feel, Hailee?” He asks.
I sigh and lean back into my chair. “Look, Dean. I like you and all, but don’t you think you should be asking yourself that question? I mean, I’m sorry if it feels like I’m holding you back, but I don’t want to do this like this. I want someone who will respect my decisions, and if you can do that, I’ll respect you too.”
He says nothing and looks outside his window. So I take it as my cue to leave. I walk into the house, only seeing Lisa in the living room. “Where’s everyone else?” I ask.
She turns her head and frowns. “Why are you here? The game hasn’t even finished yet. And where’s Dean? What about your things?” She asks all at once. I look at my hands and realise I left my things in Dean’s car.
“I’ll be back.” I say as I turn around.
“Yeah, me too.” She replies before running to the bathroom. When I get to the door, there’s a knock. It suddenly swings open. Dean comes inside.
He sadly smiles and hands me my jacket, the shirt and the cap. “I’m sorry for being an ass, and I’m sorry if I’m hurting you.” He says. I take my things from him. “Hailee?” Dean calls. “...I want you, Hailee.” He says. I look at him quietly. “Please, say something.” He begs, placing his hands on my shoulders.
“Dean, what are you doing?” Halsey asks from upstairs. “He just came to drop off my stuff and he was about to leave. I answer for him. Halsey rolls her eyes and disappears.
Dean kisses me. I don’t do anything. He pulls away. “I don’t want to confuse you. Believe what you want, but just know that I’ll really be waiting for you to come back to me.” He whispers in my ear before leaving.
Three weeks have passed by since I last spoke to Dean. Much to my disappointment, he hasn't texted me once either. Maybe going to the game with him was a huge mistake, instead I chose to ignore the voice in my head that had already predicted that. But, I guess I did indirectly ask him for space.I head to the cafe and grab a Yogi Sip before taking a seat in my usual spot. My heart skips a beat as I see Dean walk in too. I look away and pretend to be distracted by my phone.Dean's P.O.V.My science partner, Dani and I walk into the cafeteria. I spot Hailee sitting alone, her eyes glued to her screen as I'm about to get myself a snack. I take a deep breath before excusing myself from Dani and walking up to her. "Hey." Hailee glares at me with clear annoyance. "Okay, hear me out. I know we haven't been in contact for a minute, but I really miss you, Hailee." "Why'd you start ignoring me in the first place?" She asks, her eyes still on her screen. "I thought you wanted space, that I was
Hailee's P.O.V.Around the hour of ten, I get a phone call from my mom telling me to rush to the hospital as soon as I can. I almost start to panic, wondering what might have happened. I keep a clear mind, removing any worst case scenarios from my thoughts. I hurriedly get up, put on a hoodie and rush out the door. I drive as fast and as cautiously as I can, trying my best to maintain my focus on the road. Along the way, I drive past a robot where it seems like an accident had just happened. I take a deep breath. "Breathe, Hailee." I whisper to myself. When I get to the hospital, I find both my parents seated in the waiting area along with Jake. "Mom? Dad?" My mom immediately gets up from her seat and hugs me. I sigh in relief, knowing nothing happened to either of them."I'm so sorry, honey." My mom shakedly says, her hand cradling the back of my head. I furrow my eyebrows and shake my head. "For what, Mom?" My mom doesn't answer me, but only moves to cup my cheeks with contained t
Lisa and I decided to stay behind while everyone else went home. She wouldn't let me stay alone despite her needing to rest. It's morning and I've been worried sick about Dean. His doctor passes by us. I stand up and touch his arm politely. "Excuse me. Hi, I'm Hailee, Dean Howard's girlfriend. Is it possible by any chance to see him?"The middle aged man smiles at me. "Sure. Go right ahead." I thank him and jog to Dean's room, pausing at the door when I find him and Dani kissing. They pull away from one another. Dani quickly spots me and clears her throat. She brushes Dean cheek "Get well. I'll see you soon." Dani walks past me with a smirk on her face. Dean immediately sits up straight after noticing me at the door."Hailee. It's not what it looks like." He quickly defends himself. I scoff in disbelief as I slowly enter the room, maintaining great distance between us. "What's it like then, Dean?" He opens his mouth but no words come out. I shake my head. "What a waste of my time." I
Dean's PO.V.Time has been passing slowly since Hailee left. I can't help but feel a peak of anxiousness as I try to remember what happened on the night of my car accident, only remembering fragments. I sigh, pressing my body into the couch as my head starts to throb. My phone pings with a notification.Dani: Hey Dean. You're my only hope right now. I'm at the park and I need your help. Please hurry.I furrow my eyebrows. Why's she at the park at this time of the night?Dean: What's wrong?I don't get a response. I get up and put a shirt on before driving to the park. I'm not even a mile from home when I step on the brakes. My heart rate suddenly picks up and my headache gets worse. I don't think I'm ready to drive so late again. I pick up my phone and call Jake to help Dani out before letting her know. I drive back to the house and call Hailee. "Hey." She greets. "Hey, are you busy?" I ask. "No, not really. What's up?" I sigh into the phone. "Maybe I'm overthinking things, but I h
"I..." "Just leave it, Mom. I'll be fine. With or without you." I turn away from her. "Can I please be alone?" She nods and slowly walks out of the room, closing the door behind her.Hailee's P.O.V.It's Monday morning and Dean still doesn't feel ready to come back to school. He won't let me drive him considering that he isn't okay to do so. I think maybe the whole arrival of his mother affected him more than he lets on. I lazily throw on a hoodie and a pair of jeans before heading to school, not bothering to do my hair."Hey." Lisa greets me as I get out of my car. I smile and pull her in for a hug. I can still see the guilt in her eyes even though it wasn't entirely her fault. I rpobably would've reacted the same way."You alright?" I ask her. She nods. "I'm worried about you. It's so hot yet you're wearing a hoodie." I roll my eyes. We walk together towards the school entrance. "Is the cafeteria open yet? I didn't eat anything." "I think so. We can go check it out." Hailee's P.O.V.I haven't seen Dean the whole week, trying to catch up on school work. Now that the weekend has arrived, I finally can. When I get to his front door, I knock once and let myself in. I find him staring at a family photo on the wall. My excitement dies down. Maybe this wasn't the best time. "Hey, you okay?" I walk towards him, standing next to him. He doesn't look at me, only faintly smiles."You know, sometimes I wonder if my parents actually care about me. They left me here, all alone before I even finished the eighth grade. I don't understand why they couldn't take me with. My mom, who I haven't seen for at least three years, finally cares to pop up days after I get into an accident only to disappear again." He scoffs. "I don't even want to start about my father. Always so serious all the time. I bet it was his idea to leave me behind. And now-" He looks down at his feet and then up at me. He turns in my direction, stroking my cheek before pulling me in for a hug. "I'
Having spent the night at Dean's, I text my mom first thing in the morning and let her know I'll be home by noon. Dean shifts next to me in his bed. I lie on my arms and watch him as he sleeps. I think back on what he said last night. "Good morning to you too." He croakily lets out before opening his eyes and smiling at me. "Good morning." I say. He winces a bit as he chuckles. "You hungry?" I nod. He gets up, putting a shirt and shorts on. "Well, I haven't done any groceries so I hope your up for some takeaway food for breakfast." I laugh. "I don't mind."I get up too and get into yesterday's clothes. We head downstairs together and wait for our food to arrive. "Thank you, for staying the night." He says. I smile, brushing the hair on the back of his neck. "I always love spending time with you, Dean. You don't have to thank me." A knock sounds at the door. Dean collects our food before we both dig in. "Halsey came by yesterday." Dean says, halfway through chewing. I look at him
It's Sunday morning and I wake up next to a softly snoring Hailee. I contently sigh before lifting her head slowly as to remove my arm from under her. After successfully doing so, I stand up, but my arm is grabbed. "Don't go yet. Please, just another hour." She pleas half asleep. I slide back under the covers and she envelops herself in my arms. I kiss her forehead. She looks up at me and smiles with her eyes closed. She then rubs her hand against my bare chest. "You have such smooth skin." I smile. "So do you." I say as I glide my hand down her side. Hailee's eyes slowly open. I look into her chocolate brown eyes. I lean into her and kiss her. She cups my cheek. I lift her leg and place it onto my hip. "I think we should brush our teeth first." I whisper into her mouth. She swats my shoulder with the back of her hand. "Are you trying to say I have bad breath?" I chuckle and nuzzle my head into her neck. "Although, that would be a good idea." We both giggle. I sit up. "Come on. Y
The first four weeks of my college freshman year has been nothing but one word so far--hectic. The daily curriculums are so long and have you running around like a headless chicken that you'd swear it's out to get you. The lecturers barely give us a gap to breathe. We constantly have to be running machines, even if you haven't had an oil change, if you get what I mean.I haven't seen Dean for at least four days due to our different courses and timetables. The day to day studying and assignments haven't been of much help either. It is a lot. With the bit of free time I have today, I'm hoping to see him because I miss my boyfriend. I close all my textbooks and grab my phone to text Dean after making sure it's at least on vibrate considering that I am in the library. Me: Hey babe. Let's meet at the cafe for lunch, yeah?Dean: Sure. Give me about 20 mins.I smile ata his quick response and excitedly rush for the door. As I open it, Madison is leaning against the wall across. Three months later"Hailee, make sure that you don't leave anything behind. You don't know when you'll be back home again." My mom says for the fifth time today out of the other hundred times this week. I roll my eyes and nod. It is finally D day! I'm off to Chicago for college and Dean will be here soon.A car hoot sounds outside. Mom claps her hands together. "That must be Dean." I follow mom to the door with my luggage. We step outside where Dean is opening his trunk, preparing to fill it with my stuff. We both smile at the sight of each other before he walks towards me and squeezes me in his arms."I've missed you." I snuggle my nose into his chest. "Me too." Dean and I let it each other go so he can greet my parents. My mom decides it the perfect time to take photos considering they won't be coming along. I bite on the inside of my cheek. "Where's Halsey?" "She's probably still inside, sulking. I don't understand what's wrong with her. She won't see you for some time." Mom answ
I haven't been able to sleep well, my last conversation with Dean constantly replaying itself in my head along with my apparently crumbling relationship with Lisa. I can't seem to pinpoint where exactly it all went wrong. I pull my covers to my neck, curling my body closer to my chest. The doorbell starts to go off. I ignore it, assuming someone else will get it. It continues to sound. I groan and get out of bed to attend to it. "I'm coming!" I yell as I run down the stairs. I pull the door open to an unexpected face and immediately close it but he pushes his foot in the gap, preventing the door from completely shutting. I roll my eyes and take a seat on the couch. Dean follows me inside. "Hailee, I'm sorry about the things I said yesterday. I just got into my head a little too much." I cross my arms. "If that is your attempt at an apology, it's not accepted. It's not enough, just like my hope in us." Dean exhales and sits down next to me. "Hailee, I'm here because I don't want
Two days have passed by of exhausting classes. My parents are constantly on my neck about college applications after that. Graduation's near and I'm trying to ensure I excel in all of my classes.Dean is back at school for a few more days, just until his parents arrive. It's the end of the day and we're both sitting on the back of his car sharing french fries. "So, you're not going to graduate here?" I ask him."I want to. I have to. It's near year-end, no one's going to take me now." He says.I swallow what's in my mouth. "Actually, you'd be surprised." Dean shakes his head."No, I'll convince my parents to stay." He sighs. "But knowing my dad, who's likely not changed, he'll utilise his connections for me to graduate in Chicago."I bite on the inside of my lip. "Yeah." Dean's phone pings. He takes it out of his pocket and momentarily stares at the screen before putting it back. "Let's go to my place, yeah?" He jumps down from the car and opens his arms to help me down. I place my
