I stare at King incredulously, because what he just said can’t be right.

“What do you mean, you think you know how you can save me, King, I still haven’t shifted, can’t shift. Have you forgotten?”

“Oh no, I haven’t. However, you’ve changed, Mars, just like a shifter would. Your senses are sharper, and you’ve even changed physically, hell, you had the signs of a shifter about to change before your birthday. If that doesn’t make you a werewolf, then I don’t know what will.” He slowly gets up and starts to pace and my eyes track his movements as my mind races and my chest fills with hope. “If we can convince my dad of this, then we don’t need to have this noose around our necks anymore, you’ll be free and so will I. We can be together without worrying about a damn clock ticking.”

“Can we really do this?” he pauses to look at me, his eyes light with this renewed hope and energy, and I want so much to fall headfirst into it, but there’s a little doubt and fear keeping me grounded. If I ge

Head down, shoulders slouched.Head down, shoulders slouched. I repeat the mantra as I make my way across the halls. Monday mornings can always determine how the rest of the week goes. You either go unnoticed and have a good week, or you attract unnecessary attention and have a horrible week, and I am determined to have a great week this time around as I walk hurriedly down the hall that’s filled with chatter about weekend escapades and expectations for the week. And of course, this won’t be a high school if there’s no talk of boys in between and gossip and of course, complaints about tests and assignments. However, as the school...sorry, not just school but town outcast, I can’t partake in the chatter going on, just keep my head down and hurry towards the back of the school where the football field is. That is where I’ll stay safe till classes start. Unfortunately, I’m so focused on my escape that I don’t see Penelope De Flores aka the school’s queen, dating the school’s king, aka on

  • My Shadow Mate   CHAPTER TWO

You know what it’s like when you cause trouble with your friends, and right when you’re about to get punished, your friend somehow disappears or gets their ass saved by some mystery magic? Well, Aria just pulled that magicky shit on me right now and I want to cuss her out to the moon and back!I’m left facing an enraged Andy alone, and Ansel is not far behind. Their twin green eyes staring back at me...well more like glaring down at me. Those two are so similar that it’s unnerving. Their moms are twins, but they are not. They are cousins, but they basically grew up together, and look somewhat identical, at least in their eyes. Ansel has curly sandy blond hair while Andy has buzzcut brown hair, he never lets it grow out long enough to see whether it is curly or not. They are both close in physique, but Ansel is burlier than Andy, probably because of the beta blood in his veins. Those of power tend to grow bigger than the rest somehow, especially after they shift for the first time and

  • My Shadow Mate   CHAPTER THREE

King seems to notice the change in my mood as he leads me towards the dining table, sits me down, and places the plate of steaming hot and no doubt delicious lasagna before me and then he tops it up with a glass of milk. My stomach screams at me as I take my time to take the food in, and then I dig in, and boy is it delicious. I’m quite certain I’m having a foodgasm right now because I sure do moan at the blissful taste. When I’m done scarfing down at least half of the plate, I finally raise my head to look around only to stop at the sight of King sitting across with more amusement on his face than I’d like.“What are you still doing here?” I ask around the food in my mouth, quickly chewing and swallowing so I don’t further humiliate myself.“Oh nothing, I’m just here in case you manage to choke on your food or swallow your spoon together with the lasagna at the rate you’re going.” My face immediately heats up.“I would never...I would never do that!” I exclaim embarrassed and defensi

  • My Shadow Mate   CHAPTER FOUR

I wake up to the sound of my door unlocking and being pushed open. I instantly sit up and realize the sun is setting, but I don’t dwell on it as my eyes train on the door as it opens to reveal Richfield walking in with a tray holding what I presume to be food. I watch as he balances the tray on one hand, and with the other flips the switch to flood the room with light. his rough and muscular features give an indication of the powerful experienced and well-trained enforcer he is, but beneath his rough exterior, he is a kind man who loves his family despite their many flaws. The only person who’s ever shown me any kindness or even come to my defence in this entire pack. I think originally, I’m supposed to call him dad, but after his wife vehemently refused to have any of that, there was no choice but to call them by their names; Richfield, Helena and Penelope, Oh and Mars, the girl they had to take in but don’t want. That’s the entire family.“You’re awake.” He says as he walks in and s

  • My Shadow Mate   CHAPTER FIVE

KINGThis is bad,This is very bad, bad for me and worse for Mars. It doesn’t matter than we had no hand in becoming mates, the problem is that we are mates and no one is going to accept that, not now and not ever. Even though I’ve told her that we shouldn’t fret about it, I can’t stop fretting. This is a whole problem that no one is ready for, especially not when my parents are so hung up on Penelope and I becoming mates that my parents have welcomed her into the family and my mom has started training her to become a good luna ages ago. I have no idea what to do now that the inevitable has happened and she isn’t my mate. When I started to feel my bond earlier than expected because Penelope wasn’t going to turn sixteen for a while, it bothered me, but when I told my dad, he said it’s normal because her birthday wasn’t too far off. And I stupidly accepted it, even though things had begun to change with Penelope. My wolf didn’t want to be around her anymore, and sometimes it grew angsty

  • My Shadow Mate   CHAPTER SIX

“You’re damn right I am, now what the fuck were you trying to do to my mate?!” King’s angry words have me in equal states of panic and relief because clearly, these barbaric people won’t hurt me now that he’s here and has claimed me as his mate, but also, he has claimed me as his mate, in front of all of them, and that is probably going to bring about a whole lot of backlash. “You’ve got to be fucking kidding me! Her, of all the people you could be mates with, her?!” Alpha Richmond almost roars in anger and frustration...and I’m sure he’s only frustrated because he won’t get the chance to wring my neck like he was promising to do just a few minutes ago. There are mummers all around us and even though not many people are here, I know the news of my inability to shift would travel faster than a wildfire, and by the time noon meets the pack, everyone everywhere will know. There’s no way anyone is keeping this a secret. “Yes dad, her. She’s, my mate. Now just what were you trying to

  • My Shadow Mate   CHAPTER SEVEN

Penelope just stares at as for sometime, as we all seem to freeze in the moment. I’m still on King’s back and he’s still in wolf form. We stand like that as tears continue to stream down her face. It’s like she suddenly can’t talk, and I find myself feeling bad about it. I know she loves King. They’ve been together forever and not just together, but close together and in love, so having this happen isn’t really the best.I feel so bad that I make the first move and start to get off his back, and that seems to break her out of her trance as words fall from her lips.“This is why you’ve been pushing me away? Because of her? You-how can you be mates, why are you mates with her? And you knew and you didn’t tell me and you were pushing me away, why?” Her words are so pain filled that even I want to cry, but I know her better than that. She’ll soon resort to anger and start screaming like a banshee, throwing a tantrum. When I’m safely on my feet and dusting my dress of any furs from King, h

  • My Shadow Mate   CHAPTER EIGHT

I wake up very early in the morning, pull on some leggings, a t-shirt and sneakers, tie my hair up in a ponytail, then head out and go for a run to clear my head and prepare myself for the day. I run along the fields, parks, and even bypass the training grounds before coming back to the house to get ready for school. I meet Richfield when I enter the house, he’s lacing his boots in the living room. Looks like he’s going over to the training field. He raises his head when he hears me enter.“Hey Mars, went out for a run?” He stops lacing his boots and sits straight to talk to me.“Yeah, it’s pretty early and I decided why not?”“I see, anyone give you any trouble?”“Oh no, people weren’t out and about, so no. I’ll be going to school and just wanted to stretch my legs before then.” He cocks his brow at me.“Is that really a good idea? Are you sure you wanna do that?”“Yes, I can’t run away from this. I might as well start facing it, the faster the better.” He looks at me and then smiles

  • My Shadow Mate   CHAPTER FIFTEEN

The following weeks after the Penelope incident are fast-paced. Time is still running out, and King, Ansel and I still haven’t found a way to make me shift. We have a week more to the claiming ceremony, and I’m more nervous than ever...maybe even scared. I don’t want to die. So far, my life is going well, and I don’t want to leave it behind, I’m not ready to die.King and I are still working on our friendship, we are getting closer by the day. We spend almost everyday together at some point. We talk and laugh and on the rare occasion when we are overwhelmed and frustrated with how things are, we argue, but we get over it quickly and bounce back. Sometimes I go to his place when we have to go to the river after school and he has to change. I just stand at the door and wait for him because I know that to some degree, I’m still not welcome. Sometimes his mom sees me, invites me in and proceeds to do the small talk thing with me, but whenever his dad sees me, the glares and sneers he send

  • My Shadow Mate   CHAPTER FOURTEEN

True to his word, just as I hear the dinner table being set and smell the aroma of delicious food wafting up, there is a knock on my door and at my muffled response, Richfield walks in. The sun is setting and I don’t have lights on in my room, so his face is shrouded in darkness, and even though I can see clearly now, I avert my gaze because I’m still ashamed of my earlier behaviour towards him.“Mars, it’s dinnertime, if you want to, you can change and then we’ll go.”We?He wants to wait for me? Why?“You don’t need to wait for me, I’ll just pull on some sweatpants and head down.” I get up from where I’m seated at my study table reading through my Art History assignment and making corrections, and head towards my closet. He ignores me and sits on my bed, and I take the hint and go get changed. When I get back, he is right where I left him, and when he sees me, he stands up and head towards the door. However, when he opens it, I reach over and grab his sleeve tentatively, unsure in h

  • My Shadow Mate   CHAPTER THIRTEEN

I just stand and stare at King’s mother, the luna. With her straight brown hair like her son’s, held up in a bun on top of her head, and beautiful brown eyes, not like her son’s; he inherited his dad’s eyes, she is a stunning lady. She is short, at least shorter than King, and slim. She looks like how I imagine a mother will look. She is in a green dress that reaches her knees, and a neon orange apron that has ‘World’s best chef...sorry, mom’ written on it, and it’s so playful that I’m sure King bought it for her, and has a ladle in her hand, and looking closely, I can see there’s stew on the ladle, she was cooking. I know she’s not old, although she’s not so young either, she should be in her mid forties. Werewolves tend to age really slowly after we turn twenty, so it’s no surprise that she’s still really pretty and young looking. I’ve seen her dressed up, and she is breathtaking when she needs to be. However, she is currently glaring at me and her son because of Penelope, and I fee

  • My Shadow Mate   CHAPTER TWELVE

True to my assumption, when I shut my locker after getting the things I need for the day, I find King standing right there, leaning against the adjoining locker like you see in movies. I scoff and chuckle.“What’s funny?” he asks as he stands straight and is facing me like I’m facing him.“Nothing, some things are reserved for my mind alone.” I answer sassily even though I’m fighting off a smile and the amusement I find from this.“Oh yeah?” he leans in and I take a step back.“Mr. Wright, if you have nothing better to say to me, then I suggest you leave me alone, I have an important class to get to, and dare I say it’s way more important than you are.” I could never star in a movie, acting is just not my calling, because one look at his face has me bursting out in a fit of giggles. So much for the nonchalant mean girl vibe I was going for. “You suck at acting, it’s just not in your blood.” He laughs but is cut off by a voice that has the laughter melting off our faces.“Yeah, she su

  • My Shadow Mate   CHAPTER ELEVEN

For the next few hours, the two boys make me do various things to test my senses. I am given a few different leaves from different plants across the river and into the thicket of trees to smell and then go look for the plants the leaves were plucked from and bring back a leaf to compare. And I did all that blindfolded, but I had King guiding me so I didn’t hurt myself while searching. I pass that with flying colours after searching for almost two hours, because Ansel doesn’t give any easy tasks, and neither does he apologise for your burning tongue or runny nose at the end of the day...I’ll keep that in mind next time.By the time I walk through the front door, I feel horrible, and everything hurts...and to think that I have to meet them tomorrow to continue...I just want to cry.“Hey, Ki...” Richfield trails off as he passes me in the hallway, pausing to take a good look at me. “What is...?”“Don’t ask.” I cut him off and trudge upstairs and to my room. He just raises his hands in su

  • My Shadow Mate   CHAPTER TEN

It’s been exactly a week since my birthday, and King and I have been working hard to make me shift, we’ve been thinking of a way out of the whole murder me deal, but still nothing. Even though my hope is beginning to waver, King is determined that we’ll get out of this somehow. And believe it or not, his best friend; Ansel is helping us out. However, his best friend; Andy, doesn’t want to so much as look at me, and when he does, it’s with so much anger and disgust. Every chance he gets, he wants to pick on me, and if not for King in his way, he’d have punched my face into a locker or a wall or maybe even a floor by now. He is without a doubt the douchebag to end all douchebags. Well, when we put him out of the equation, we have Penelope being a bitch to end all bitches. She is doing everything she can to make me look bad and be hated, almost like she’s forgotten that I’m not the pack’s favourite person. She’s telling lies and spreading rumours about me, she’s calling me names and bein

  • My Shadow Mate   CHAPTER NINE

“Who were you talking to, yourself, or the moon goddess?” I look up to find King staring down at me. I didn’t notice him come, that’s probably why Aria left so soon. He’s standing in the way of the sun, so I can look up at him and not feel like my eyes are burning.“Sorry, I didn’t see you come around.” I choose to ignore his question because even if he says he believes me, I still can’t shake off the thought that deep down, he thinks I’m crazy. He sits down beside me anyway, leaning against the nearest tree and stretching his legs out on the ground.“It’s okay, so who were you talking to?” He doesn’t want to let it go, and I want him to let it go, sooner rather than later.“Thanks for the gift, I like it. When did you get it in...and without Richfield noticing?” He eyes me and then sighs.“I’m not letting it go, Mars. I told you that I believe you, and you can talk to me...and you’re welcome. I didn’t know what to get you, but when I saw the sweater, I thought it would look good on y
