ISABEL

"Aren't you thrilled about my marriage to your mom?" my stepfather asked in a manner suggesting that he felt I might be against their union.

"I am happy," I replied, sounding sincere. "You two make a great couple."

He nodded, seeming to accept my response. "Good. Then why are you trying to drive a wedge between us?"

"Oops!" Shifting uncomfortably in my seat, my mind raced with possible replies but none was deemed fit.

"I remember how I once shared how your mom had left me before. You have no idea what it took me to convince her and bring her back. Now, I realize she had her reasons for leaving. And she has kept them from me."

I lowered my gaze, "Forgive me, father. I'll always call you father, because you've been a father to me, and I cherish the love you've shown me. Please forgive me and Mavis." I was struggling to process my emotions.

My stepfather sighed, and calmly asked, "So, you're really carrying my grandchild?"

I nodded, still tearful, "Yes, father. I'm sorry I didn

ISABEL She looked like she had been caught off guard, and her eyes darted around the room to be sure we were alone. "What do we do?" Mom asked reaching for my hand, "I'm worried, what if he tells your stepfather that I married him for his money?" she added, her worry deepening."He wouldn't," I replied. "After all, you married him through Mavis' arrangement. He made it happen. I've been wondering how you met Mr. Mulan, and now it's all clear." I smiled shaking my head. "It's a very small world," I muttered. Mom looked torn as she worried about the outcome of Mavis' knowledge about the mentioned man. "Should I say that I owe Mavis or do I get upset and beat myself up over this?" Mom inquired, throwing herself into utter confusion. I offered a suggestion, "I think we should give ourselves permission to be happy, Mom."But Mom looked up with surprise, "Don't tell me you want to be with him? He's your step-brother for crying out loud! Are you not aware that Estelle is too wicked to be

ISABEL "The truth is, he captivates me even until now. I've always imagined him as a husband never as a stepbrother," I choked on my words as emotions attempted to overwhelm me. Mom opened her arms wide, inviting me into her bosom. "Come here, dear," she said. "I want you to be happy and fulfilled. I know you ran away because of Estelle's lies, which Mavis believed. If not for that, you would have stayed and claimed him as yours." I nodded because her words were true, "I'd always wished he wasn't my stepbrother, Mom" I admitted, my voice muffled against her shoulder. "But I can't wish that he had chosen a different path to be with me because if he had, you wouldn't be with Mr. Mulan." Mom held me tighter. When she had released me, her face lit up with a broad smile. "Anyway, for peace to reign and for everyone to be content, we've decided to let go of the past. We're free to choose what makes us happy, as long as it doesn't come between us. And that's why...," she paused for a mom

MAVIS For a while, there was dead silence until Mom cleared the air, "Your Dad had immediately arranged for a violinist, in the person of Jane, and a pianist to make today unforgettable for you two." After her smile, she looked at her husband who smiled with a nod in return. Dad turned to us while we were still entangled with each other, his words catching us off guard. "From this moment on, my rightful daughter-in-law will be none other than my stepdaughter, Isabel. No one will take her place. Got that?" I nodded, still in shock. "Yes, I understand. It's something I had already agreed to." The room erupted in applause. Jane was there too, exchanging a knowing glance with Isabel, who smiled briefly in response. "A confession please, I have one more confession to make," Isabel said stepping forward while the room became silent again. My heart palpitated and although no one else spoke up about being anxious, I knew I wasn't the only one experiencing anxiety in the room. She
