Kiara’s POV

Despite no longer being my mate, deep down, I couldn’t help but believe that if anyone would stand up for me, it would be him. Even though my mind had come to terms with my destiny, my heart stubbornly resisted. A tiny fragment of it still clung to the hope that he would reconsider and pick me instead of her. Yet, his hesitance to act spoke volumes, providing my sought answer.

Moving my head away from him, I tried to focus on the problem at hand. I knew for a fact that I could not train with Leslie. Even though it was meant to be a practice session, Leslie wouldn’t miss any opportunity to harm me. Despite being aware of this, I couldn’t afford to back down.

“Let’s start, shall we?” Leslie said and brought a fist toward my face. Instinctively, I ducked down and took a step back.

I once again looked at Asher, pleading with him with my eyes to do something. In response, he only looked away from me. In my distracted state, I failed to notice that Leslie was coming at me again. Before I knew it, Leslie had flung me over her shoulder and dropped me to the ground. I groaned in pain at the impact and closed my eyes.

“Is that all you’ve got?” Leslie said as she kicked my shoulder with her shoe.

Slowly, I tried to stand up again. My back still hurt from the impact, but Leslie spared me no mercy. She began to go for my face this time, but thankfully, I saw it coming. I ducked my face and saw her go for my leg instead. Scooping one leg over her arm, she smacked to the ground on my side.

She was not playing by the rules. And our teacher allowed that.

By this point, a crowd started to accumulate around us, but none of them said anything.

“Oh, get on to your feet, you incompetent idiot,” she said.

I clutched my nose, felt something dribble inside, and found a red liquid on my fingers. I instantly realized that she would completely shatter me if I continued to let her do this. She was stronger than I was and wouldn’t hesitate to break a bone in my body if she could.

I shook my head and said, “No, I’m done.”

She chuckled, “You’re done? “You can’t leave so soon, you fool. We just started.”

With great difficulty, I stood up and said, “Find someone to train with, Leslie.”

With that said, I slowly started walking away from class. I heard people boo me from behind, and my teacher threatened to give me a huge D for my score, but I did not spare a glance back.

I had no reason to look back, as I knew for a fact that he was not going to come after me.

****

As I started walking away from class, I didn’t stop until I reached a safe, isolated space in the parking lot. I sat down behind a tree, away from anyone’s field of vision, before I let my tears lose.

I was exhausted from everything life was throwing at me. And just when I thought it couldn’t get any worse, Leslie had to add physical pain to the mix. As I inspected my hand, I discovered it had already started to bruise. Judging by the excruciating throbbing in my left cheekbone, I was certain bruises were also adorning my face.

Asher was a heartless beast to let that happen to me. I knew he rejected me but would soon be the pack’s leader. Is that how he would let someone treat one of his pack members? Nobody in the room cared enough to stop Leslie from doing what she did. It made me question why I was still in this city.

The people here will never forgive, and I was done asking for their mercy. As soon as school ended, I would apply for a college the farthest from here and escape. Getting accepted into another pack would be difficult, but I was sure it would be simpler to live anywhere but here.

“Miss, are you okay?” I heard a soft yet manly voice coming from my side.

Like a child caught in an embarrassing act, I tried to hide his face from him before saying, “I’m fine, thank you.”

I could still sense his eyes on me as he stood firm without budging. From the corner of my vision, I saw his shoes drawing nearer.

“That’s not a convincing tone,” he said, kneeling beside me.

“I’d like to be alone,” I said, raising my arm to shield my face.

Suddenly, I felt him grip my arm. His fingers were rough over my skin, but his touch was warm. He gently rubbed over my bruise, which slightly elicited some pain.

“You’re injured,” He said, “We need to get you to the hospital.”

Jerking my hand away from his grasp, I turned to look at him in anger, “I said I’m fine.”

Through my angry eyes, I finally captured his concerned ones. His dark brown eyes were the first thing that came to my notice. There was a sense of coldness within them, as did the rest of his face. His thick eyebrows pulled to a frown, disapproving of how I reacted. Below his sharp nose rested a pair of delectable lips that now thinned to form a brooding line.

As soon as I laid eyes on him, an unfamiliar sensation slowly enveloped my stomach, leaving me bewildered. I struggled to comprehend the source of this peculiar feeling. It could have been his captivating aura or the closeness of his face to mine, causing a subtle instinct to make me cringe. I felt intimidated by his presence and needed to apologize to him.

“I-I’m sorry,” I said. “I- I didn’t mean to snap at you. I was just…”

He cut me off as he slowly brought his hand toward my cheek. With a delicate touch, he caressed my left cheek with his thumb. Our eyes met, creating a brief pause that felt like time had stopped. In his gaze, I saw a blend of concern and curiosity. Slowly, he approached me, careful not to frighten or push me away.

“Are you okay?” He asked softly, his voice filled with genuine concern.

His words reached deep within my heart, causing a glimmer of hope amidst the darkness. He was the first person to ask me that in ages.

I wiped away my tears and managed a weak smile. “I’ll be fine,” I replied, my voice trembling.

He did not look impressed. Suddenly, I felt something switch in his eyes, as though he was angry, “Who did this?”

At the sight of him, fresh tears rolled down my cheeks. As my mind wavered back to the combat class, I couldn’t help but recollect everything that had just happened. Seeing that his words only made me cry harder, he refrained from asking further questions. Instead, he spread his arm out for me.

“Come here,” he spoke.

Much to my surprise, I found myself accepting his embrace. As he wrapped his arm around me, I put my head on his chest, letting myself melt within him. For the first time in my entire life, I felt safe. I felt protected. In those precious moments, my mind could finally find peace. I surrendered myself to the embrace, allowing tears to flow freely. Time seemed to stand still as I wept in his arms. When I finally lifted my head, I noticed his wet chest mirroring my tears.

I widened my eyes as realization slowly dawned on me. What has gotten into me? I was astounded by my behavior. Why was I trying to find comfort in a stranger’s arms?

As soon as I regained my senses, I recoiled from him. “I-I’m sorry,” I said, afraid to meet his eyes. “I should go.”

With that said, I sprang up and started walking away quickly. I looked over my shoulder to see if he was following me, but thankfully he was not. His expression conveyed a sense of bewilderment, as if he were adrift, grappling with the unfolding of events and attempting to make sense of it all.

I was with him on the emotion. What the hell just happened?

Kiara’s POV: We weren’t supposed to have a combat class until Thursday, but much to my dismay, we did. When I tried to find out why, I was told that it was because the new combat trainer had joined for duty today and in order to conduct our introductory session, our combat class was postponed. To be honest, I was relieved to know that I no longer had to see the substitute teacher who did not care enough to supervise our sessions. It was in his class that Leslie beat me and it didn’t even come to his notice. As I made my way to the combat class, I secretly prayed for a better combat trainer who acted like a professional. Little did I know what was in store for me. As he stepped into the class, I felt my breath hitch in my throat. Blood drained from my face as I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. Of all the people in the world, how did he end up being my trainer? How was I supposed to take this seriously after knowing that I wept in his arms merely a day ago. This was beyond embarra

Seconds passed before I could see again. As soon as I opened my eyes, I found my trainer looking down at me.I felt his hand on my head as he rubbed my forehead all the way back to my hair. “Are you alright?”He was so close to me that I could feel his breath on me. Marcus’ POV The principal’s office lay at the epicentre of the school’s administration department yet remained shielded from the chaos. A couple of couches lay outside his room and a glass teapoy was placed in the middle. Since it was after the official hours, I doubted that he was with any company. Taking my chance, I walked up to the black wooden door that lay as a passage to his chamber. A golden metal plate was firmly fixed into the wood, with the words ‘Sherman Fields’ written on it with black ink. I knocked on it twice, and instantly heard his voice. “Come in.” Twisting the door knob, I stepped into the room as I opened the door. Sherman looked up from his paper and gave me a grin. “Oh, Marcus, please come in.” Nodding, I closed the door behind me before I walked to his table, “You wanted to see me?” “Yes, but before that, how was your first day?” I shrugged, “It was alright. Nothing I hadn’t expected.” “I’m sure you’re impressed with our students. They are very skilled.”

Marcus’ POVLater that evening, I stepped out into the neighborhood to go for a quick run. Back home, I went for a hunt almost every other day either alone or with my pack. We made it a ritual to meet at least once every fortnight in the forest to go for a duel. It was all healthy yet purposeful as it was a means to understand, grasp and interpret each other’s strengths and weaknesses. This drill was an essential part of our training as it enables us to develop a stronger bond with our pack members and reorient our strategies.Ever since I moved here, I hadn’t been able to step into the wild to satiate my wolf's hunger. I lacked the proficiency when it came to the geographical boundaries of these areas and nor was I sure if it was even allowed to go for hunts in the forest here. Moreover, most of the people here would perceive me as their enemy for my arrival into this town isn’t public knowledge. However, I had to quickly find a solution to this as my wolf was already growing impatie

The next morning, I found myself eagerly walking to school. It was perhaps the first time in years that I was looking forward to it, and the reason for it was my Professor. My spirits were up all through the day, and when it was finally time for my combat class, nervousness began to creep in. As I walked into class, I noticed that Marcus had arrived earlier than usual. He was talking to a bunch of students, probably giving them tips as to how to train better. My eyebrows shot up in response. So it was going to be a one-on-one thing today. I smirked at the thought. A few moments later, Asher and Leslie walked in together, but I didn’t bother sparing them a glance. After the stunt Asher had pulled yesterday, I realized that he didn’t deserve my attention at all. • My Second Chance With The Alpha    200. Epilogue

It’s been four months since the war, and nothing remained the same. The aftermath of the battle was just as gloomy as the events leading up to it. Although the threat to our survival diminished significantly, it took us a long time to accept the disastrous consequences of the war. With so many lives and resources lost, we all had to work extra hard to restore the balance of our community. However, it was only after these four difficult months that we found a reason to celebrate once again. And the occasion was Bella and Lucien’s much awaited wedding. When Lucien took over his empire, Bella and him decided to move out of our house. Starting a new life of their own beyond the mountains, they remained away from us for longer than we’d hoped. Although Amanda visited her a couple of times, both Marcus and I haven’t been able to make time for the same. So naturally, when I met her earlier today as we arrived at their new house, I couldn’t control my tears, and neither could she. “I’v

Considering who we were dealing with, we should’ve known better than to believe that the Lycan King would stick to the rules of the war. When the war began, both the parties established that none of the fighters would carry the war beyond the battle ground. However, after experiencing significant loss yesterday, the Lycan King had perhaps realized that they were heading for defeat. It drove him to do what he was doing right now, breaking rules and going to capture Bella. Thank God Lucien and I caught them before it was too late, for I don't know what would have happened if the Lycans had infiltrated the town. “Where are they?” I asked in impatience as I looked out of the window. As soon as Marcus was informed about what the Lycans were up to, he asked us to head straight home. Bella, Ethan and Natalie were already shifted home by the time we came, along with the baby and the other staff at the medical center. Our army was heading into the town now to fight the Lycans although few

Once my eyes were on him again, I noticed that his disappointment was still persisting. “Come on,” I said, “You can’t be mad at me.” “Of course I’ll be mad at you Kiara, what were you thinking?” He said, “I’d particularly told you to not do anything stupid and you come all the way into the danger zone all alone?” Tears welled in my eyes at his strict tone. I understood why he was reacting like this but I hoped that he would have some empathy for what I was feeling. Thank God I’d asked for a midwife to stay on stand-by, I was suspecting this would happen. “Take her into the operating room right now!” I said as the nurse took over. “Kiara.” She clutched my hand, forcing me to come with her into the room, “I… I need Ethan.” My heart twisted in pain as I looked into her eyes. Conflicting emotions arose within me as I contemplated what to say to her, making me temporarily devoid of voice. Noticing my hesitation, she shook my hand once again.“Kiara?” “Yeah…” I said as I found the courage to answer her. There was no way I could tell her the truth in this condition. I would have to mask it with a good lie until she was in a position to hear the truth. “Natalie, I’m so sorry, dear. But Ethan is in the middle of a battle. I’ve got the news about half an hour ago, I can’t get him to you now.” “Oh, God.” She groaned, falling back onto the pillow, “I don’t think I can do this

Although Marcus was giving me the most reassuring smile he could, I couldn’t help the trepidations in my heart. The war had arrived much sooner than I’d expected, making it even harder for me to let go of him. In fact, I didn’t think any number of days would have prepared me for this one, for no wife would want to bid adieu to her husband as he prepares himself to fight the most cruel monster known. Despite my attempts to have faith in Marcus’ abilities to kill the Lycan King, I couldn’t help the worry that traveled all the way to the pit of my stomach. It was merely days ago that we were happily relishing our honeymoon, and now, Marcus was heading to a war. I was feeling a lot of emotions right then, but fear dominated them all. “Kiara?” He said, placing his hand on my shoulder, “Oh, don’t look at me like that, darling.” Pursing my lips, I gave him a defeated look, “Alright,” I sighed, “I’m going to be so worried for you.” “I promised I’ll be careful.” “I don’t trust you.”

Our men are going to take care of it. I’ll deal with him later.” “Okay.” I nodded and let him lead me into the house. Within minutes, our bags were packed and loaded into the boot. Hoping into the car, Marcus drove away from there. “Does this mean Mary was also a Lycan?” “Most probably.” He said, “Her husband is leading the rebellion.
