/Annabelle's POV/
"Are you sure you want to do this, Annie?" Diane asked me for the umpteenth time, holding onto my hands and staring at me in the eyes. It's been weeks since Ethan and I finalised our divorce, and I packed out of the house. Yet I still didn't get as much as a text from him. I was stupid, right? How was I even thinking of getting a text from him despite all I had been through? But that was the thing. I was still stupidly in love with Ethan. I had moved in with Diane and was now insistent on getting a job for myself. However, Diane wasn't convinced it was a good idea as she felt like I was going through a lot, and I needed to take some time to take care of myself. "I'm positive, Dee," I replied, squeezing her hands reassuringly. "I feel like I'm going to lose my mind if I don't do this, Asides that I need the money. I can't keep depending on you. " "But I never said I was complaining," "Yes, I know that. But I'm not comfortable living like this, so let me do this, please. " I smiled softly. Diane's expression softened, but I could still see concern lingering in her eyes. "But are you ready? You have been through so much already, " "That's exactly why I need this. I need to focus on other things rather than my grief." Diane nodded slowly. "Okay, Annie. You have to promise me one thing, though. You'll prioritise your well-being. " I smiled. "Of course, Dee, I promise. I'll be fine. " "Very well then." She replied as she released my hands and adjusted on the chair, pulling her phone from the coffee table to continue surfing the Internet since she was working from home. "See you when I get back, and wish me luck," I replied as I headed for the door, but I stopped in my tracks when I suddenly heard Diane scream. "This stupid bastard! " She exclaimed, staring at her phone like the images on the screen had turned her blood to a boiling point. I rushed back to Diane, my heart beating with intensity. " This is crazy," she scoffed. "What's wrong, Dee? "It's Ethan," she gasped, her eyes venomous as she handed me the phone. "Wow," I said simply, the image I was looking at bringing tears to my eyes as I desperately tried to blink them back. On the screen was a photo of Ethan and Penelope beaming with happiness. Penelope's hand was proudly displaying a sparkling diamond engagement ring, while Ethan's hand wrapped around her waist, pulling her close. Their smiles seemed to scream happiness and love, but all I felt was as if my heart was cut deep by a two-edged sword. The caption beneath the phone read: She said yes! Which was accompanied by a heart emoji, which made me feel like a knife was twisting in my chest. " What a heartless bastard! It's barely two weeks after your divorce, and he's already engaged? " Diane spat. " To the same woman he claimed he was constantly tending to because she was sick and dying," she added, her fingers making invisible quotations in the air. "It's fine, Dee," I said, trying my best to force a smile. " No, it's not Annie. You deserved better than that piece of trash. Someone who loves and cherishes you, not someone who moves on to the next woman without a second thought, " she responded, still very furious. "It's fine, Dee. At the end of the day, you can't force love, right? There was no point staying together when his heart wasn't with me, to begin with, " I said more like I was trying to convince myself than her, as I still desperately tried to fight back the tears threatening to come out. Diane heaved a deep breath after staring at me like she wasn't buying what I was saying. " I know you are still hurting, and it's okay to let it out, okay?" She said reassuringly. " There is no need to bottle out the feeling," " I'm fine." I tried to convince her once again as I picked up my bag and started heading out the door. "Are you sure you still want to do this today, though? You could always check for other interviews, " she shouted behind me. "It's fine, I got this," I replied, walking out the door. *************************************** "Ma'am the manager will see you now." The Secretary, a lady who seemed to be in her mid-twenties, said to me as she ushered me towards the managers' office I stood up from my seat, smoothing out my dress as I took one last glance around the reception room. It was a small marketing company, but it had a cosy and modern office space. The reception area was tastefully decorated with vibrant colours and sleek furniture. About a dozen applicants like me sat waiting, each scrolling through their phones or flipping through their resumes. I took a deep breath, feeling anxious. I had been a stay-at-home wife for too long, and I couldn't help the doubt that came into my head. What if I wasn't good enough for the job? Would they accept me? I squared my shoulders and stepped inside. The manager's company was quite impressive, with framed marketing campaigns adjoining the walls. A middle-aged woman with a kind face sat behind the desk. "Welcome. Please do have a seat, " she said, and I smiled, fidgeting a little bit. "Thank you for seeing me today," I said, settling in my chair while trying to appear calm and confident. "Of course, Miss Davis..." I zoned out a bit, my brain finding it hard that I was once again being addressed as Davis. It felt quite weird, too, since I was already used to being addressed as Mrs Thompson. However, I shook the thought away, focusing on what she was saying. "I must say your application caught my attention," she said, her eyes scanning my resume " Tell me, what makes you think you are a good fit for Lumineer Creative?" I launched into my well-rehearsed speech, highlighting my marketing skills and experience. She listened attentively, nodding along. When I finished, she looked up from my resume, a look of a smile on her face. "I must say your skills and experience match perfectly with our company's needs," She leans forward, her eyes sparkling with enthusiasm. "Well, on that note, I'm pleased to inform you that....." "You would do no such thing!" A voice said from behind, stopping her from completing her words. "Sir?" The manager asked. My eyes practically bulged out, looking at the man in front of me. "Ethan? What are you doing here?" I inquire, wondering who he thought he was barging into an official meeting like that. "I'm sorry for interrupting this meeting. However, I couldn't stand and watch you employ incompetent people into my company, " He said, emphasizing "my company " "Your company? " I repeated, my voice laced with incredulity. I just like I was slapped in the face, like the ground could split open for me to run into it for shelter. I was married to Ethan for five years, and I never knew he had a marketing company. I knew he was a wealthy businessman and of his major company, Thompson & Co. However, I wasn't quite aware of his other little businesses since he never opened up to me. The manager's expression suddenly turned uneasy, her voice shaking terribly. "Sir, I'm sorry for the misunderstanding. I wasn't aware you were scheduled to attend this interview. " "I wasn't..." Ethan said. "But I couldn't let this...hiring decision slide after I saw the list of applicants sent to my email in the early hours of the day." He turned to the manager. " Ms Johnson, I'm afraid Ms Annabelle Davis isn't suitable for this position." "Please, Ethan, you can't do this. I promise I'll stay out of your way. " I turned to him, pleading the tears I had been holding back, threatening to fall. "Oh, I can, and I will trust me," He said firmly. "Annabelle's lack of recent experience and her...emotional instability will make her a liability. How can one who can't even take care of her family work in my company? " He continued, staring at me in disgust like he was daring me to do my worst. "Please, Ethan. This is a place of business, not a personal vendetta, " I added, trying my best to reason with him, as my heart pounded rather furiously. His smile was cold."I don't think you have the right to tell me how to run my business. I'm just protecting my company's interests." He snarled. "So you'd do yourself the honour and head out of here honourably before I get the security to do that. And we both know you don't want that." He finished, heading out of the office. I trailed behind him, trying to reason with him. He couldn't detest me that much, right? However, as I caught up with him, he shoved me to the side as though my touch burned him. "Security! Throw this woman out of my company this minute! "/ANNABELLE'S POV/"So what does it say?" Diane questioned, her eyes sparkling with curiosity. I stared at her blankly as I tried to speak, but it appeared that my words were stuck in my throat. "Okay, come on, Annie, you are scaring me", she said, her voice barely above a whisper as she strode towards me and took the plastic stick that I was holding from my hand."Oh wow. Two pink lines, " she muttered, shock evident on her face as though she had just seen a ghost. "Annie, so what are you going to do now?" She continued after taking a deep breath, her voice laced with concern."I don't know. But I think I have to tell him about the baby...he is the father, so he deserves to know, right?" I replied, my voice low as I was still in shock about the revelation. Annie's eyes widened as she stared at me like I had lost my mind. "You are going to tell him about the baby? After throwing you out of his company like you were less of a human?"Diane was still pissed about the incident that hap
/Ethan's POV/SIX YEARS LATERI sat in my car, surrounded by the city's evening shadows. The silence was oppressive, punctuated only by the soft hum of distant traffic.I held my phone, staring at the picture plastered on the screen. It was a picture of Annabelle and me. Annabelle's bright smile radiated beside me, her eyes sparkling as she gazed at me, holding onto my hands as if they were a lifeline. My expression, however, was cold, emotionless, and detached.I remember that day vividly; my grandfather forced me to take a picture with Annabelle shortly after the wedding. "Create memories," he'd said, but I'd been angry, livid in fact. And now, when I'd give anything to see that smile again, even a glimpse of it, it was impossible. She was gone, and it was my fault. As I gazed at the phone, my hands tightened around the phone, my grip almost crushing. *************FLASHBACK*****************"Where is he?!" Diane's voice echoed in the room, her voice laced with venom as she
/Annabelle's POV/"Annabelle?" I heard immediately I stepped into the boardroom, my eyes locking with a familiar pair of blue eyes that once made my heart skip a beat. Ethan. His eyes widened, and colour drained from his face as he stared at me like he had seen a ghost. He still looked devilishly handsome even more than I remembered. His features seemed more refined, his jawline sharper and his piercing blue eyes held the same intensity that had once captivated me.However, the sight of him made my blood boil, stirring up emotions I thought I'd long buried.**************FLASHBACK *******************I slowly opened my eyes, grogginess clouding my mind. Pain radiated through my body and I winced, trying to lift my head. A gentle hand pushed me back onto the pillow. "Easy child", a soft raspy voice whispered, and my gaze fell on a stranger. An old man with kind eyes and a warm smile."Who...who are you? " I stammered, confusion swirling. "I'm Mr Thomas. You have been in my care for s
/Ethan's POV/ "More, please," I told the bartender as I downed yet another shot of whiskey, still trying desperately to recover from the shocking revelation that just exploded right to my face. Annabelle was alive! She looked different from what I remembered. Her raven black hair cascaded down her back, longer and more luscious than before. Her curves had widened, accentuating her hourglass figure, and her eyes sparkled with a fire that left me breathless. Confidence radiated through her being, and her presence commanded attention, totally different from the once timid Annabelle that I used to know. "Ding!" My phone beeped, darting me back to reality to indicate I was getting a message. "What the heck!" I growled as I saw the notification from the bank indicating yet another debit. "Debit alert: $500,000 withdrawn from joint account. Penelope! Not Again! This was the 2nd absurd debit I was getting today. First, the channel "Diamond Forever Classic" Handbag. Now this?
/Annabelle's POV/"Hey babe. It's fine, I'm very sure Mr Thompson knows better, " I replied, snuggling into Rico's hold as I played along with his little act, a feeling of relief washing over me.Thank goodness he'd arrived. I wanted so badly to get away from the uncomfortable conversation I was having with Ethan.Ethan's gaze lingered, and his eyes darkened. However, I ignored him as I rested my head on Rico's shoulder. I thought you were just work colleagues, " Ethan asked, his tone laced with underlying tension.I raised an eyebrow, a subtle smile playing on my lips."Even though I don't see how that's any of your business, Mr Thompson, of course we are. We keep our personal and professional lives aside, something I have studied you have a problem with." I replied, my voice calm and collected even though I was irritated by his presence."I'd suggest you take lessons."Rico's hand tightened around my waist, and Ethan's jaw clenched, his fist tightening
/Annabelle's POV/"Mom, why do we have to move again?" Stacey, my daughter's tiny voice, echoed in the plane as she stared at me with her big blue eyes.Stacey's poignant features always reminded me of Ethan, her father, since she looked a lot like him. Her bright blue eyes, chiselled jawline, and mischievous grin were all similar to Ethan's. Even the small birthmark shaped like a crescent moon on her left shoulder was similar to his.I took a deep breath. "Stacey, we've talked about this; we need to relocate because mummy has to go to work."I had intentionally included the condition to fire Penelope to get Ethan off my back since, if I remember correctly, all he'd ever done was follow Penelope around like he was a lost puppy. However, his quick agreement and willingness had caught me off guard. "You outdid yourself with the party, I'd give you that." "Cousin?" Penelope said, her poise restored as she flashed a venomous smile. "How quaint. Your desperation is quite an ugly look, " her voice dripped with malice. " It's crazy you've grown worse over the years. So now you have advanced to leaching on men for their money, right?" "Penelope, that's Enough..."Ethan interceded. "No, Mr Thompson. Let her speak." I interrupted, my eyes locked with Penelope. "I'm intrigued." She can't do this!"Ethan shifted uncomfortably in his chair, trying to avoid Penelope's desperate gaze. "I'm sorry, Pen..." He started, but she cut him off."No, Ethan, don't." She said, her voice laced with desperation. "You can't let her do this, right? "Ethan's jaw clenched, a hint that he was about to make a tough decision. "Penelope, I'm sorry, but the decision has been made. The board thinks you should focus more on your health rather than this job." H
/ETHAN'S POV/I slammed the shot glass on the counter, the whiskey burning my throat as I swallowed. "Fuck!" I yelled, my fist pounding on the counter. I shook my head, my eyes scanning the dimly lit bar. I wasn't okay. I was far from being okay. Annabelle's words kept echoing in my mind. "Stay away from my child."I signalled the bartender for another shot, my mind reeling with questions. Was Stacey mine? Was Annabelle lying to me? How did she even get entangled with Rico so fast? The whiskey burned my throat as I downed the next shot. But I didn't care, I just wanted to numb the pain and anger currently brewing inside me."Hey, easy there, man. That's enough," Mark, my friend, spoke up, placing a calming hand on my shoulder. I turned to him, my eyes blazing with so much frustration. For a moment, I had forgotten Mark was even here. "I have somewhere to be, and I don't think I'd be able to drive you home if you get so drunk." He continued as he pushed the shot glass from my reach.
/Annabelle's POV/My heart raced at Ethan's question. It almost felt like it was about to come out of my chest. "Did she just say...mum?" He repeated, his eyes darting between Stacey and me, who was holding my dress like her life depended on it."Mum...who is he?" Stacey's tiny voice echoed through the air, totally oblivious of the thick tension in the air, which could be cut through by a knife.I felt a cold sweat break out of my forehead as Ethan's eyes locked into mine, his gaze piercing into mine. I decided to play it cool, but my voice came out in a shaky breath. "Yea..h tha..t what she said, I don't see how that's a business of yours," I stuttered, trying to avoid his question. But his eyes didn't leave mine, and I could have sworn I could see the wheels turning in his head at the moment. He took a step closer, his voice stern and even which made me take a deep breath. "I know you hate me so much right now, but I need you to answer this. Is she mine?"I felt like my airflow got

I screamed, my heart pounding with intensity, and I'd swear that if it continued this, it'd rip out of my chest.I hated the fact that he dared to trail me home, but it scared me more that he could run into Stacey. "I just needed to talk to you, Ann. You didn't give me a choice since you have practically been avoiding me since you got back. This just seemed like my only option." He said, his face hardening defensively."By following me?" I asked, incredulous. "That's stalking Ethan."Ethan's hands rose in defence. "No, that's not it...." He started, but I interrupted. "I don't care what your excuse is Ethan. You have no right to follow me.""I know, I know," he said, running his hands through his hair, something he usually did when he was getting frustrated. "You know? Yet you followed me regardless," I said, laughing dryly, taking a deep breath as I glanced across my shoulder to ensure there wasn't a sign of Stacey playing outside the c
