~Rosemary~
I woke up to find an unfamiliar ceiling above me.
It took me a good minute to realize that I was no longer in Max's house. I touched my belly which was once warm with life.
But now, it was just cold and flat.
I choked on a sob, missing all the mornings I spent checking out my baby bump in the mirror.
Although the last thing I wanted to do was to face Max and Amani, I knew that my mother wouldn’t have invited me in the first place if there wasn’t something important.I had to go to find out what it was.
I went into the bathroom after dragging myself out of Gerald’s bed. Yes, I slept in his bedroom while he volunteered to spend the nights on his living room sofa.
We were occupied by my luggages these days, sorting them and placing them well. It was tiring but better than attending the shitty party I was going to later today.
Everything’s hard, but luckily, I had Gerald to be with me.
I didn’t even know how to thank him.
I scrubbed my body hard in hopes it would wash all my pain away.
However, it was not that easy.
I kept thinking about all the sacrifices I made for Max.
Marrying him at just nineteen, getting pregnant even though I wasn’t ready, and even abandoning my career after barely finishing college.
All that for what? To get dumped like trash.
"Men are overrated. I won't fall for any man again!" I hissed, turning off the shower and stepping out. Just as I reached for the white towel on the washstand, the door of the bathroom swung open.Gerald somehow walked in, yawning and running his fingers through his tousled black hair.
I stopped breathing.I wrapped myself in the towel, trying to pull the towel to cover my bosom and lower part when my mouth dropped open.
I just noticed he had only briefs on.
Several muscles and toned abs were evenly spread from his broad shoulders, to his chest, down to his belly. It was as if they had been carved into his flawless skin with a chisel.
I was barely over the deep v-shaped line on his torso when my eyes fell on something protruding from his briefs.Holy…
How many inches is that? Is that even human?
He walked over to the toilet bowl with his eyes still slit, but finally, he found me, “Wow!”"What are you doing here?" I screamed, wrapping myself in the towel even tighter.
His eyes flew open, while almost frozen, "Y-you are still here? I thought you went out. I knocked, but you didn't answer."
“Oh..” I stammered, “I was just thinking things.”
I felt my nipples hardened at his stare.
I had just swallowed hard when Gerald suddenly took a step forward. My heart leaped.
"Hey, this…" he said, and before I could process that, he reached out his hand, and stroked my wet hair. "This part of your hair, it hasn't been fully wet, did you notice that, Rosemary?"There was something about the way he said my name. So breathy and sexy...that it sent my heart rate rising. Again.
I bit my quivering lower lip. But that didn't stop me from inhaling his cool but intoxicating scent.“Oh, I didn’t notice. I, well, thank you.”
My pussy throbbed even as I pressed my thighs together. Oh, God! What was he doing to me?
Gerald cocked a brow at me. "Rosemary..." When his hot breath sprayed on my face again, a warm moisture slipped between my thighs. I swallowed hard and looked up at him. For the first time, I noticed that his lashes were long, thick, and jet-black. His blue eyes pulled me in like a magnet. I didn't know when I raised my hand and touched his hard chest lightly. Gerald's skin instantly tensed up, and I could've sworn that I heard him groan lightly. Just when I reached out to touch him with my other hand, he stepped away and scratched the back of his head. "Uhm...Carry on with what you were doing." Then, he disappeared through the door.“You look nice, ready to go now?”
I staggered back in my 4-inch heel when I heard that voice as soon as I walked out of the room an hour later.
Looking to the side, I saw Gerald stand up from the sofa, buttoning up the jacket of his charcoal-gray suit.
Wow. I didn’t expect him to look so dashing and stunning but considering what I saw earlier this morning…
For a moment, I thought about the incredible abs I had seen earlier. I shook my head. “Yeah, I am.”
“May I drive?”
“You have a car?”
Gerald smiled again. “No, but I can call a friend of mine for one."
When I saw him whip out his phone, I couldn't help laughing. "You don't even have a car, yet you hesitated to accept my marriage proposal?"
He looked at me, then shrugged. I took out my car key before spinning it with my fingers. "You don't have to borrow a car. It's fine. We can both use mine from now on. I'll also pay you handsomely as long as you play your role as my husband well." Gerald did a salute. "Aye, aye, captain! I promise to be the best husband in the whole world!" "What! You are so hilarious!" I laughed again, walking out of the apartment. "I like the sound of that. But as your husband, you have to let me drive even though it's your car," he added, as we walked into the elevator. "Be the passenger princess." When we got downstairs and he opened the door for me, I couldn't help staring at him in a daze. I didn't even know him well, yet he was already making me smile. What a man!Thirty minutes later, I walked into the grand ballroom of the hotel alone while Gerald went to park the car. It was as if I had just entered into a whole new world. I saw huge balls of white clouds hanging down the high ceiling, the pillars were wrapped with shimmering crystals.
The guests were dressed in expensive clothes and accessories.
I saw a few celebrities and top businessmen in New York. Even some politicians were here with beautiful women on their arms.
I frowned, feeling a pit in my stomach. “If the engagement party was this lavish, what would the wedding be like?”
“Eww! What’s that smell?”
Suddenly, I heard a disgusted voice. My heart leaped to my throat. I turned to the side, only to see a gorgeous couple heading my way.
“It’s you! You are stinking up the whole place!” Amani Beckett, my twin sister, scrunched up her nose as she looked at me.
My cheeks heated up with embarrassment when a few guests stopped chatting to look at me. I cupped my hand over the side of my face. “Hey, sis. You are back—“
“Like I never left,” she retorted, holding Max’s arm tighter. “I came back to take what’s rightfully mine. Now, all is right in the world.”
In the blink of an eye, she grabbed Max’s tie and pulled him to her level. Their lips crushed into a kiss. As their tongues twirled around each other, I saw Amani look at me and smile.
I gasped, covering my mouth.
~Rosemary~I felt sick to my stomach when I saw Max grab Amani's butt and squeeze it. The intense kiss seemed to last for eternity. When they finally stopped, some of the guests whistled and clapped.Smiling mischievously, Amani wiped the red lipstick stain on Max’s lips and walked over to me slowly. At this moment, I couldn’t help but notice that her dazzled dress could have easily passed off for a wedding gown if it weren’t for the red color. Her blonde hair which was very similar to mine was curled and styled with tendrils falling over her cleavage. I felt she looked like a queen, but when she came closer to me and scowled, I held my breath.“I told Mom not to invite you. Why did you come? Do you intend to spoil my happiness like you did before?”Max came over and wrapped his arm around her waist. “Don’t worry, honey. She wouldn’t dare.”Then he shot me a glare.I shivered, feeling the lump in my throat return. Before I could come up with something to say, I heard the young women
~Gerald~The entire ballroom instantly went quiet. Even the soft music that was playing in the background abruptly stopped. I could feel many harsh stares on me. Regardless, I took off my suit jacket and draped it on Rosemary’s shoulder. I smiled when she looked at me with tearful eyes.“And who the hell are you to lecture us?” the older woman suddenly yelled. The younger woman who looked a lot like Rosemary snapped, “Why are you defending her? And who invited you to my party?”Max, whose face I knew all too well, echoed, “How dare you insult my fiancée and her mother? Who the fuck are you?”“I’m her husband!” I pulled Rosemary even closer, glaring at all of them. “She’s the woman I have loved for a long time."It was true.Rosemary Beckett was the woman I dreamed of every day for many years. Like it was yesterday, I could still remember the day she walked into my life.I was just seventeen years old at the time. On that fateful day, I just got off my cleaning job when I was accoste
~Rosemary~Time seemed to stop when my chest collided with Gerald's. Our gazes locked. I could see my reflection in his alluring eyes.Suddenly, we pulled away from each other. I ran my finger through my hair and looked away in embarrassment."Sorry," Gerald said softly.I waved my hand. "Don't be. Thanks for catching me."Oh, God! Why is my heart beating fast? And why can't I look at him in the eye anymore? That's normal, right? He's a handsome man. There's no way I am falling for him. I still haven’t gotten over Max."Your ankle twisted. Are you sure you are okay?" Gerald asked, glancing at my ankle.I pulled back my leg and waved. "I'm fine. It just hurts a little."Gerald nodded. After holding the door for me and getting behind the wheel, he asked, "Where to now?""Elmont. The house my father left to me is on the outskirts."Under my direction, Gerald drove us to my father's childhood home. It was a washed-up one-story building that stood surrounded by trees. The first thing I not
~Rosemary~"I can't believe I actually sold the house for ten million, now I can use this to start my own business!" I said to Gerald on the way home.He smiled. "Good things come to good people, Rosemary.""But this is just too good to be true!" I argued. "Why did that man spend so much for a dilapidated house? He didn't even inspect it himself!"Gerald kept his eyes on the road. "Rich people are full of surprises. I guess he has lots of money to throw around. You know, the fung-shui thing. Or maybe he just loves Elmont.""Maybe..." I muttered, still feeling a little strange."This calls for celebration!" Gerald declared when we returned home. "Let me cook you dinner.""I'll join you."I chopped the veggies while Gerald seasoned the chicken. At this moment, I couldn't help remembering my previous marriage. Although marrying Max had been a dream come true, life in his house was torture. I was always so lonely and sad.Max and I never did anything as a couple. He only came home to eat
~Rosemary~Three years. That's how much time had passed since I got divorced and remarried. A lot happened within that time. I had toiled day and night. However, I still couldn't believe I had achieved so much. I was no longer the broke and broken Rosemary Beckett. Now, I was a boss. After flipping stocks for a long time, I was finally able to buy a prestigious hotel located in the heartbeat of Manhattan. I also bought a bunch of other properties.Standing up from my desk, I adjusted the silver watch on my wrist and slipped into my red bottoms. I closed my laptop and then grabbed my phone and bag.It was just a few minutes past five, but I was leaving the hotel early today. I turned off the lights in the office when I got to the door. As soon as I walked out, a waitress in a black and white uniform came rushing from the left. She bumped into me. "Sorry, boss. I'm so sorry!" She bowed deeply."It's all right. Be careful next..." My words trailed off when I saw tears rolling down her
~Rosemary~"I am going to call security and they will throw you two out, that's what!" I fired, unfazed by her murderous glare.Amani scoffed. "You must be out of your damn mind! Max and I are quite popular around here. If you do anything stupid, this hotel will go under."I scoffed in return. "Let me worry about that, will you?"A look of surprise appeared on her face, but she continued, "We demand an apology!"She turned to Max again. "Right, honey?"Max nodded and looked at me. "As a manager, it's your duty to keep the customers smiling. Apologize to us right now!""I will do no such thing!" I snapped. "Stop wasting my time. Take your things and leave!"Amani stamped her feet. "I won't take this. We have spent so much money only to receive such shitty service, what are you going to do about that!"Sucking my teeth, I opened my bag and took out the bundles of cash I had planned to deposit in the bank tomorrow morning. I took off the bands, spread the notes like a fan, and then flung
~Rosemary~ "Wait, you mean to tell me that Amani slapped your employee, and when you confronted her, she pushed you and you ended up with a scald?" Sabrina asked at noon after I told her what happened. I nodded, sipping from my glass of juice. "Please keep your voice down. People might hear you." Sabrina glanced around the restaurant. "Fuck that shit! Please tell me you gave her the beating of her life!” “I didn’t. Max was there and I was hurt.” Sabrina rolled her eyes, clutching her fork even tighter. “That bitch has got to pay! You should report to the police." "No," I said, shaking my head, "I want to deal with this my own way. It has been a long time coming, anyway." Sabrina wiped her lips with a piece of serviette. "If you say so." She looked at her watch. "Can we go now?" I set down my glass and picked up my bag. "Yes, please." Sabrina and I walked out of the restaurant and went to the shopping area of the mall. She had offered to take me shopping earlier. As we passed
~Rosemary~Amani staggered backward. Her designer bag dropped from her arm as soon as she crashed into a shelf. Her face turned white, but I could see my palmprint on her cheek. She stared at me with eyes wider than an owl's.The silence was deafening. I had picked up the bag I wanted and turned around before she finally spoke."You slapped me!" Amani screamed, holding her red cheek. "How dare you!""That is what you get for slapping me!"There was a stinging pain in my cheek, but I clenched my jaw and glared at her. "Look at me carefully, Amani. I'm not the Rosemary you knew three years ago. Hell, I am not even the same person I was yesterday."If you dare put your filthy hands on me ever again, I'll break them! Then, I will make sure that when next you see me coming, you will go the other way!"Amani's eyes widened even more. Just when I thought she wasn't going to say another word, she straightened up and spat, "You bitch! You have crossed the line. Max is going to be so mad when I
~Rosemary~A year later.“Are you nervous? Getting cold feet?”I blinked when I heard that voice. Sitting in front of the mirror, I looked at Sabrina who was styling my hair. “No, I am not nervous.”She sighed and stared straight at me. “So why have you zoned out more than three times since I started doing your hair? Something else bothering you?”I shook my head slightly. “I was just...just thinking about how different today would have been if my mom, dad, and Amani were here.”“Ugh!” Sabrina gagged. “How can you think of those fools on such a beautiful day?”My head lowered and I inhaled deeply.“Come on, girl. Forget about those folks. It’s not your fault that they were jerks. You have kept your mom out of your life for a year. Don't allow her into your heart again.”I raised my head. Then nodded. “Okay. I won't.”It had been more than a year since Amani committed suicide with the large dose of fentanyl she had on herself when she was arrested. And it had been seven months since my
~Rosemary~I pricked up my ear after Gerald removed the call from speakerphone and then said a few words. Although I didn't hear anything more, I was fairly certain it had to do with me.“I am coming with you,” I said as soon as he ended the call.Gerald shook his head. “No, you can't. Let me handle this.”“You are not the boss of me.”I took a deep breath, realizing that I was getting worked up. “I’m sorry. I—”“It’s fine. I can only imagine how you must be feeling now. But you don't have to follow me to the station.”“I do. And I want to. I want to look her in the eye and ask her why she did that to me. I also want to see Max and Amani. I want all of them to know that despite everything they did to me, they cannot break me.”Gerald stared at me, and I saw more reluctance in his eyes.“She deserves that much, Gerald,” Elvis chipped in. “After all she has been through recently, she deserves to look at her enemies in the eye.”Gerald said to him, “Stay out of this. Please.”“I know you
~Rosemary~Gerald’s head shot up as soon as I spoke. His eyes lit up and then, I felt his body crushing mine.“You are back!” he said, kissing my face. “What took you so long?”He pulled back and held my face. “Oh, my God! You scared the shit out of me. Don't do that again, okay?”I chuckled. “Okay, Mr. Beckett.”“I was so worried about…” His words trailed off. “Wait, what did you just call me?”I shrugged, “Mr. Beckett?”“You…you remember me?”I nodded. “I remember everything, Gerald. I am sorry that—”Before I could finish speaking, he knocked the breath out of me with a hard kiss. I smiled against his lips and then parted mine.Until now, I didn't know how much I had missed his lips on mine. As always, it felt like heaven. I held his strong arm despite the pain in the back of my hand due to the IV needle.“Catch your breath,” Gerald said, pulling back after like a minute.“What?” I chuckled again.“I’m not done yet. Just breathe.”I did as he said. And the second I was no longer g
~Gerald~“Seize them!” I roared the second I kicked the door open. All six of my men matched in and surrounded Max and Amani. They struggled but were pinned down within seconds.I squatted by the door, seeing Rosemary lying down.“Baby!” I scooped her up.She smiled at me. “You are here.”When she coughed out blood, I held her face. “Shh! Don't say anything. Let’s get you to the hospital.”“Wait!” Rosemary reached out and held my face. “I’m sorry for not believing you. Sorry, I realized too late.”“No! It’s not too late.”“I’m afraid it is.” She smiled again. “If I were to come back to this world again, I’d love to be your woman again. I would love to know love like you love me. To love you and be loved by you, Gerald. Just by reading your words, I realized that you are the man I always dreamed of having as a child.”She rubbed my face. “Promise me that we will meet in another life? Promise me that you will look at me the way you are looking at me right now.”“No! I can't promise you
~Rosemary~It was already past closing hour for most jobs, but my lawyer agreed that I come in to start the process. On the way, my phone dinged.A notification from the doorbell camera had just come in. I opened it and saw the live footage of Amani’s car pulling up in the driveway of Max's house. What’s she doing there? And immediately I just left too.I watched as Amani got out of her car. Max showed up from the inside. They spoke for a while. I thought they were arguing again. But then…“Oh, my God!” I screamed the second Max kissed Amani.“Ma’am,” said the taxi driver. “Are you okay?”I covered my mouth, shaking as Amani and Max made out on the porch. They looked like they wanted to gobble each other up. Max even grabbed her ass and squeezed it. Then they staggered into the house, still not letting each other go.“Ma’am, is anything the matter?”Hearing the taxi driver’s voice again, I raised my head. “Please, can you take my back? I will pay double.”He looked at me through the r
~Rosemary~I couldn't stop thinking of what Gerald said to me about proposing a prenuptial agreement. He sounded so sure that Max wanted me for my money. But Max was a billionaire, right?Right?I took out my phone and searched for the name of Max’s company. A few headlines came up.The first one: Brix Cars to get new CEOThe second: Max Smith resigns from the CEO position. Would this mark the end of the family’s hold on the company? The third: Brix Cars reportedly plunges into 30 billion-dollar debt.My jaw dropped lower with each headline I read. I had no idea that Max’s business was suffering this much, let alone the fact that he was no longer the CEO.Why didn't he tell me? Did this mean Gerald was right?Well… there's only one way to find out.I pulled out my phone and called the number saved under legal. “Erm… I’d like to draft a prenuptial agreement.”*****“What’s this?” Max frowned the second I handed the document to him.I kept my distance, a little scared. “Since we are goi
~Gerald~I slammed the door in his face. Before turning away, I listened as he stormed off, huffing and puffing about how I was making a huge mistake.“Before you say anything…” I began, looking at Elvis. “Get on the phone with the Russian mafia. I’m sure they would be pleased to know that Angel showed up here.”“No!”“What?” I exclaimed on the way to grab a glass of water.Elvis shook his head. “I don't think it’s a good idea to get involved in the battle between Angel and them. Time and time again, this has always ended with a bloodbath. It was hard enough for you to stay alive all these years despite having many enemies. I can't watch you get involved in a mafia war just because you want to take Angel down.”I sighed. “What do you suggest I do then?”“I suggest we wait. We wait for them to locate Angel and take him out. Since he's roaming without a care in the world, that should be pretty easy.”I shook my head with uncertainty. As far as I knew, Angel was much more powerful than m
~Rosemary~“Boss, are you okay? Boss!” Elvis ran to me as soon as the phone dropped from my hand. He made me sit on the sofa and peered down at my face. His tone changed. “Gerald, are you okay? Should I call the doctor?”I shook my head, clutching my chest. It was as if I was going to have a heart attack. But I knew going to the hospital won't help me.“Was that Rosemary on the phone? What did she say? Why are you like this?”I looked at him. “I don't know what to do, man. She’s getting married to Max again.”“What! How…but your divorce hasn't being finalized. You didn't sign the divorce papers, did you?”“I didn't. But now that she doesn't remember me or the love we shared, I’m afraid Max would make her drag me to court for the divorce. He's manipulating her big time.”I went on to tell him about the wedding photo Rosemary found and how she accused me of faking it and planting it in Max’s house.“This is getting out of hand. Should I tell the boys to take him out?”I groaned. “No. T
~Rosemary~“H-how is this… how did this…”I couldn't believe my eyes at all. I stared at the woman standing beside Max. She was wearing a very beautiful wedding dress. Most importantly, she wasn't me!She looked like me, but she wasn't me. She was Amani. I was sure of it!“So it’s true? What that man said is true! Max divorced me so he could be with Amani?”The photo slipped off my hands. Taking a step back, I stared down at it. “They even had a wedding. But why did Max propose to me two days ago? And Amani was so happy for me!”What the fuck is going on? Who's playing me for a freaking fool! All of a sudden, the door opened. I turned and saw Max. His eyes widened at the sight of me. He looked at my feet, and his eyes widened even more.“Care to explain?” I asked, folding my arms.I was trying so hard to keep it together. Heaven knows I wanted to jump at him and scratch his face. Another part of me also wanted to just break down crying. This moment reminded me of the heartbreak I su
