My worst fears don’t come true when Christopher Moore looks away from me.
I release a deep breath I don’t know I’ve been holding. It will be terrible if he recognizes me. I am currently having a big battle with my mind on whether to go ahead with the interview for the position or not. It doesn’t feel normal to closely work with a man I had casual sex with. Everything screams awkward in my ears, but my current financial situation keeps fighting back. “Can we start the interview now?” He says to Stella who quickly agrees and introduces him to us. “…The interview lasts five minutes for each person. As soon as you hear your name from the speaker, please make your way into the room across. Thank you.” Stella and Mr. Moore head out first, leaving us to ourselves. Before Babara can turn to me, I stand up and move my chair to the end of the room until several minutes later. I’m the last person to enter the room across and when I do, Stella asks me to take my seat which I do. The interview is so simple that I wonder just how ridiculous it is. Stella asked personal questions like family and relationship stuff. But her last question about being willing to sacrifice my time and give up a big part of my social life for my job entails what she is on the lookout for. I think Mr. Moore is looking for someone who would be at his beck and call. Stella and Mr. Moore move back to the waiting room to meet the rest of the job candidates after they are done with me. “We are done with the interview today and in two days, you will receive a mail notification. The person who gets the position will be put on a one-week trial period and if she fails to reach Mr. Moore’s maximum expectation, the letter of employment will be revoked and someone else amongst you will be offered the opportunity,” Stella reveals. I think this Mr. Moore is going to be hard to please. Good luck to the winning candidate and I hope it’s me because the pay cut, incentives and company car are everything I need right now. Right when we are about to be dismissed, Barbara lifts her hand in the air and immediately I know she is either seeking attention or she’s up to no good. She’s always up to no good. “Yes. Go on.” Stella permits her to speak. Barbara stands to her feet ready to throw her question but not without giving me a smug smile. I am not affected by it. It’s not like she is beautiful or anything, and for the point of correction, she looks smarter than she actually is. Barbara completely ignores Stella and directly fixes her gaze on Mr. Moore. “Mr. Moore, I understand how important public image is to you at this particular moment, especially given that you were recently instated into the CEO position. I believe you would want to do everything to ensure no mistakes from your end. Am I right?” Mr. Moore crosses his leg over the other with a fist under his jaw. “What is your complaint?” Honestly, even I do not understand the stunt Barbara is trying to pull. None of us do. “I have with me pictures and video evidence of one of the candidates here making a joke out of herself at a public event. Hiring someone like her for this kind of important position will bring ridicule and cause you to become a laughingstock.” Barbara pulls out her phone and steps forward to hand it over to Mr. Moore, but Stella takes it from her instead and goes through whatever she has to show. Mr. Moore casts his gaze on the screen to watch the video playing and then, I hear a familiar voice that brings a bad premonition to me. Don’t tell me that’s a video of me being thrown out of my boyfriend and my adopted sister’s engagement party after causing a scene? How did this witch get her hands on it? “What’s your name again?” Mr. Moore asks as he lifts his gaze. I panic, thinking I’m the one he’s referring to but I immediately let out a sigh of relief when Stella offers a response from his side. “Barbara Collins.” “Ms. Collins, you just displayed a character trait of a whistleblower. And you know what that means to the position you interviewed for?” Mr. Moore asks. He doesn’t seem to mind with the evidence presented before him and immediately, I give him a hundred for having a good sense of judgement by not concluding facts with so little information. Barbara stills by my side. The panic in her eyes are as clear as day. I’m glad she finally understands the gravity of her actions against me. Next time she will think twice before trying to mess with me. I’m the last to step out of the room so I stop at the reception desk to ask Stella for the restroom when I hear her speaking to someone over the phone. “...I don’t think I will be returning to my job here in Transcorp anytime soon and I regret my actions. If only I had taken proper precaution before my wedding, I wouldn’t have been put in this condition with a baby I didn’t plan for.” Instantly, a wave of anxiety hit me as it just occurs to me that I had raw sex with Christopher Moore.Christopher’s POV. 8:15 AM. With eyes narrowing and brows furrowing, I make a stop at the front desk on my way out of the club. I woke up naked this morning with spots of semen on my thighs and the bed. Someone definitely came into my room while I was delirious. “Who let a woman into my room?” I demand with an icy tone as my gaze moves between the two people behind the desk. I watch them exchange confused glances and something flashes in my eyes. Wrath. I don’t want to believe they don’t know what I’m talking about. This is an exclusive club and no one, I mean no one has permission to get into my bedroom without my consent unless they get the keycard from the management and I think that’s exactly what happened. I don’t have time to stall so I demand to see the CCTV footage from my room door last night but I don’t mind showing up late for the interview or leaving everything to Stella. “We are sorry, Sir. Unfortunately, the policy set by the management does not al
Emily's POV I didn’t think Barbara would be waiting outside the building for me because as soon as I step out, she rushes towards me. She just doesn’t know when to give up. “I saw the smirk you gave me earlier. Don’t rejoice so soon because I will definitely get this position and stomp all over your face!” Barbara says, stopping in front of me as she glances me up and down. “You lost your boyfriend to your adopted sister. It wouldn’t be a bad idea to lose this position as well. You know, celebrating double losses would be perfect instead of one.” For the records, Barbara is talking about the look I gave her after Mr. Moore crushed her confidence. I didn’t even know she saw it. Also, I had no idea she knew what happened to me at that party yet presented the situation to Mr. Moore like I was caught fighting Brenda for her man. At this point, I’m not even thinking for myself. Anyone but Barbara can secure the position of Personal Assistant to the CEO of Transcorp. I know
I nod before quickly saying to her, “Please, can you get me some ice?” She stares at me for a moment and then follows my gaze to the spot my hands are clutching, a deep sigh escapes her lips. “Give me two minutes,” she says and turns on her heels to leave and I’m grateful for that. By the time I finish giving my swollen ankle a cold water compress and limp into the dining hall, Dad, Mum and Brenda are already sitting around the table. I walk into Mum putting food on Brenda’s plate with so much love in her eyes. I have never seen her gaze at me that way. “Why are you limping? What happened to your leg?” At Dad’s question, I pull my thoughts together as Mum and Brenda cast their glance at me. They look surprised at first before Brenda withdraws her gaze. Mum fixes a stare on me. “Don’t mind her. She is always trying to seek our attention. Go on with your food.” Dad’s gaze pierces through me like an arrow. I know he is waiting for an answer from me, so I give him one as I
I can’t keep myself in check after Brenda left and the servants checked on my foot. I want nothing more than to leave this house. My mental health is at stake, I need to escape. And this is the moment where I should be pacing up and down the room to relieve my pent-up frustration but instead, I’m sitting on the bed biting my lower lips as a result of my swollen ankle. Thankfully I didn’t twist my ankle like I was expecting. It was only a strain on the nerves that should be fine after ice therapy, rest and compression. A thought drops in my heart. I remember I have a best friend and feel an urgent need to contact her before I lose the last shred of my resolve. She is usually busy, so I decide to leave her a text. “Heh, Tessa! Do you have time to spare tomorrow? Can we meet?” To my utter surprise, she texts back two minutes later. “I’m here for you, Babe. We can do brunch tomorrow. Where do you want us to meet? Hope everything is fine at your end?” Her quick respo
I gulp down an entire glass of juice without stopping to take a breath. It’s my third glass by the way and when I’m done, I find myself gasping for air.For real, how can I not recognize my one-night-stand partner????“Chris has been living abroad for several years. He recently came back to take over our uncle’s company, Transcorp…”I grab a napkin and wipe the corner of my lips as Tessa goes on talking about her cousin with pride glittering in her eyes. The last thing I want to do is to sit here and listen to chats that would raise my blood pressure but unfortunately for me, I don’t have much of a choice.“Emily, you don’t need to wait until you get a response from the company you are seeking employment from,” Tessa says with an encouraging smile. “I will introduce you to my cousin and have him secure a position in Transcorp for you.”Now that I think of it, having a one-night stand is not the only gist I skipped telling Tessa. I omitted the fact that Transcorp was the company I
SUNDAY.7 AM. Dear Emily,I hope this message finds you well. On behalf of TRANSCORP, I am thrilled to extend you the offer for the position of Executive Personal Assistant to the CEO. Your skills and experiences stood out to us during the interview, and we are excited about the prospect of you joining us.Here are the details of your offer.…Welcome to TRANSCORP!Warm Regards,I am livid with excitement as I stare at the mail I just received from the HR department of Transcorp. It feels surreal that I was offered the position sixteen of us interviewed for, but I am even more elated that Barbara Collins didn’t smell the position like the way she bragged about getting it.Let’s see who will be stomping on whose face now!I go through the content of my employment letter once again. I am to resume work tomorrow. The perks I will be receiving are not in detail, but I see health insurance and a jaw-dropping starting amount of $30,000 that I will be making monthly! A gasp esca
Grandpa turns his attention back to me and the lines at the corner of his eyes become more pronounced.Unlike Uncle Austin, the looks he shifted to me is kinder.“Come see me in my study after dinner. There is an important conversation we need to have,” Grandpa says to me and picks up his cutlery again. But I’m done with the food and ready to leave.I release a deep sigh and feel Tessa lean in close. “I don’t think you will be able to leave tonight after all.”I get what she is saying. It’s past 7 PM and we are still on dinner, and by the time I finish my meeting with Grandpa, the clock will be hitting 9 PM.“Who says I can’t leave even at midnight?” I reply to Tessa. She shrugs and leans away. Then with something like a proud smile, she says softly, “I almost forgot who you are. You are Christopher Moore. You get whatever you want.” Then she forks a piece of beef into her mouth and chews it slowly with her gaze still on me.I don’t agree with Tessa on this. While it looks like
8 AM, Monday.Emily’s POV.Happiness is when you realize you are finally stepping foot into TRANSCORP as a staff and not a hopeful job-seeking candidate. The joy feels different.I might not have everything I want right now, but I can feel that TRANSCORP is my breakthrough point. As soon as I step out of the elevator, I see Stella standing in front of the receptionist's desk with her protruding belly. She smiles at me and I quickly make my way towards her.“Good morning, Stella.” “Congratulations, Emily and welcome to Transcorp,” she shakes my hand and turns to face the young man and woman behind the desk who stands to their feet. She introduces me to them.“Emily, meet… They are the CEO’s secretaries…” I give a small nod of my head in greeting while taking care not to smile too much. I can’t be found giving away that I’m desperate about my new job otherwise they might have something to worry about.Stella works me into my job description and introduces me to the rest of
