Murderous Thoughts

I nod before quickly saying to her, “Please, can you get me some ice?”

She stares at me for a moment and then follows my gaze to the spot my hands are clutching, a deep sigh escapes her lips.

“Give me two minutes,” she says and turns on her heels to leave and I’m grateful for that.

By the time I finish giving my swollen ankle a cold water compress and limp into the dining hall, Dad, Mum and Brenda are already sitting around the table.

I walk into Mum putting food on Brenda’s plate with so much love in her eyes. I have never seen her gaze at me that way.

“Why are you limping? What happened to your leg?” At Dad’s question, I pull my thoughts together as Mum and Brenda cast their glance at me. They look surprised at first before Brenda withdraws her gaze.

Mum fixes a stare on me. “Don’t mind her. She is always trying to seek our attention. Go on with your food.”
