Looking back too often will only make you fall down.

“Let her work for me!”
A young man broke in and interrupted Qeiza’s job interview. He walked toward the interviewer and skimmed Qeiza’s personal data then nodded firmly.
“But this is going to violate the hiring procedure, Sir!”
“Which one’s the harm?” the man protested. “She’s already sent the application letter and this company has called her to have the interview.”
“We need experienced designers, Sir!”
“She’ll be an experienced one if we give her a chance.”
The young man looked at Qeiza seriously. “Would you like to be my personal assistant and get trained for three months?” he asked. “Certainly with a bit lower salary than the other employees get.”
The spirit of Qeiza, which had slackened earlier, got back up and was excited.
“Yes, Sir,” Qeiza accepted the offer. “No problem.”
The man patted the interviewer’s left shoulder softly then he winked, causing the interviewer just could take a long deep breath and surrendered. Nevertheless, who dared to refuse the wishes of the supreme leader of the creative division?
All this time, he always rejected every time he’s offered to have a personal assistant. Now, he himself chose the new candidate. It meant that he got his own consideration about her.
“You’re very lucky, Miss Kim Ae Ri!” said the interviewer.
“Thank you, Sir!”
Qeiza smiled slightly responding to the interviewer’s words that gave an impression that he still underestimated her abilities.
“Let’s go to my office, Miss!” invited Qeiza’s guardian angel.
Qeiza left her seat, bowed slightly to the interviewer who looked a bit confused. Then, she hurried up to follow the man who's going to be her boss.
Qeiza swept the man’s office with the look of admiration. Her hazel eyes widened a bit while reading the name perched on the table of the owner of the room. She felt as if she knew that name before.
“Take a seat, Kim Ae Ri!” said the man. “Or … may I call you Anin?”
“Hah!” Qeiza was flabbergasted in silence with a wide open mouth.
The man smiled while walking to his chair behind the table. He rested his elbows on the table with all his fingers interlocked.
His two index fingers even moved, tapping the back of his hands lightly. His gaze locked on Qeiza who still looked so confused, asking to herself how the man could know her real identity.
Qeiza made an effort to remember her college friends in Seoul because it’s only since she studied there she got that nickname.
“Anindira Qeiza Pratista, that’s your real name, right?” The man asked her in a slightly interrogating tone.
“Th–that’s right,” answered Qeiza. “Do you know me?”
All at once Qeiza was hit by a skittish feeling. She preferred using her new identity in order to bury her bad memory related to her real name. It’s out of the blue that she was reminded perfectly by someone she’s just met.
“Oh, my goodness!” The man exclaimed cheerfully while clapping his hands. “I thought I misidentified you.”
The man grinned like a Cheshire cat. He rose from his seat and pulled out the chair for Qeiza. A moment ago he had invited her to sit down, but it seemed that the young woman was still in two minds.
“Sit down, please!” he instructed. “Take it easy! We’re not strangers at all.”
The man went back to his seat. He flashed his most winning smile when Qeiza had sunk her butt on the chair and sat face to face with him.
“I’m Song Chin Hwa,” he said, introducing himself. “We studied at the same campus in Seoul, yeah, although I’m two years above your grade. We’d ever won a clothing design contest for spring. Don’t you recognize me any longer?”
Qeiza’s memory flew back to the prestigious event that she had ever participated in. A spring clothing design contest sponsored by one of the top fashion companies in the land of ginseng.
She couldn’t win the first winner at that time because she was still in her first year, but at least she was proud to be the third winner and the man who was exactly sitting in front of her now came out as the first winner.
“I’m sorry!” said Qeiza. “I didn’t think we would meet again.”
“Hahaha. Evidently, this world is so small, right?”
“You’re right. Glad to see you again.”
Since winning the competition, Qeiza had ever got involved in the same projects with Chin Hwa for several times and they were quite compatible to each other.
“I immediately recognized you when I saw you at the reception desk earlier,” Chin Hwa admitted. “It’s pretty pitiful for knowing that you’ve forgotten me.”
Chin Hwa laughed discordantly to cover his awkward feeling. He felt a bit shy and insignificant because of being forgotten so easily by someone who had ever become his corporation partner.
“Once again, I do apologize.” Qeiza said heartily. “Actually, I was a bit surprised when I read that nameplate.”
Qeiza pointed at the nameplate on Chin Hwa’s table. “I thought I’ve ever been so familiar with that name, but your face was so different.”
“Hahaha ….” This time, Chin Hwa laughed aloud.
His heart was like shined by the twinkling of the stars while hearing Qeiza’s confession. A kind of feeling glad sneaked into his heartstrings when he found out that Qeiza had not really forgotten him completely.
“It’s true. Now you are looking manlier and not chubby anymore.”
“Oh, Geez. Did I look that fat ealier?”
An awkward smile that flashed out of Qeiza’s lips was a valid answer for his question.
“Forget it! Don’t remember it again. It made me shy,” Chin Hwa said. “You know? Looking back too often will only make you fall down. It’s better to enjoy this moment and stay focused on looking to the future. Do you agree?”
“You’re right,” Qeiza couldn’t agree more with Chin Hwa’s opinion. “But, can we make an agreement before I start working?”
Chin Hwa’s eyebrows knitted together. He got an odd feeling about Qeiza’s request. “Sure. Just tell me! What do you want from me?”
Qeiza’s face immediately sparkled brightly, making Chin Hwa’s eyebrows furrowed even more.
“Please call me Ae Ri!” Qeiza asked. “I don’t want other people to know my real identity.”
Though he didn’t understand why Qeiza made such a strange agreement, Chin Hwa knew exactly there must be something behind it. He had no reasons but appreciated it.
“Okay. From now on, I’ll just call you Ae Ri.”
“Thanks a million.”
“But, in one condition ….”
Chin Hwa paused his sentence. He examined Qeiza’s expression for a few seconds.
“I want you to call me ‘Oppa’ when we’re alone or outside the office,” he continued. “Is it okay?”
Qeiza didn’t agree to Chin Hwa’s request at one time. She thought about it for a moment. After considering that Chin Hwa was three years older than her, Qeiza finally nodded.
“Good! Deal, right?” asked Chin Hwa, confirming.
“Deal!”
“Glad to work with you, Ae Ri.” Chin Hwa shortly practiced their agreement.
“Now, please help me to recheck and correct this stack of designs.”
In a short time, Qeiza had started struggling with the design papers. She sorted good designs and put them aside.
Then her fingers began dancing with a pencil and a rubber, correcting some designs which still needed the last touching or a bit changing according to the theme.
It’s already been a week Qeiza adapted to her new job. She enjoyed it pretty much.
“Ae Ri!” Chin Hwa called.
“Yes?” Qeiza stopped her activity for a while.
“Please prepare the best designs for winter asked by Company M,” Chin Hwa said in a commanding tone. “We’ll see the director right away.”
Qeiza took an act quickly to do what the boss instructed. She didn’t want to make Chin Hwa wait for a long time. It seemed that the cooperation with this company was quite important so that Chin Hwa himself stepped in and asked her.
Usually, that man just sent the representative he appointed or delegated Aleta, one of his best designers.

The gaze can shoot a cupid arrow at the speed of light or even faster. *** “Make sure all designs are perfect, Ae Ri! No mistake, even a little bit.” Chin Hwa reminded Qeiza once more time. “I’ve checked them many times,” answered Qeiza. Chin Hwa was still busy to check the documents he’s going to take with him. He should totally be sure that none of them left.” “By the way, is the one we’re going to meet a kind of perfectionist?” Qeiza couldn’t help her curiosity. Even though she’s just been a week working for Chin Hwa, at least eight hours a day, she could analyse that he was a kind of calm person and could control his work rhythm. He never got cracking. Chin Hwa paused what he was doing. He stood up and looked at Qeiza with narrowed eyes. “Didn’t I tell you about the person we’re going to meet?” Qeiza shook her head. “No, you didn’t,” she replied. “I’m sorry. I should have let you know earlier.” Chin Hwa felt a bit guilty. “The rumors said that the new director is not only
Life is full of challenges. Just face them all though you’re forced to do so. *** “I don’t understand what you’re talking about, Mr. Song,” Ansel refuted “I just want to make sure that everything runs well.” Ansel disclosed a cold and indifferent expression as if he didn’t need the cooperation. He gazed at Chin Hwa and Qeiza back and forth. “If there’s something to be changed, don’t you think it can be done faster if Miss Kim is available at the same office as me?” he asked. “I won’t bother to call you and she won’t need to go back and forth from your office to mine and vice versa for the same intention. It’s so simple, isn’t it?” The reasons Ansel put forward sounded so logical so that Chin Hwa and Qeiza were speechless. Although they were still in doubts, they didn’t deserve to indulge their prejudice. “Or … lest these designs aren’t Miss Kim’s works?” Ansel accused. He deliberately attacked the ego and pride of his business partners in front of him, primarily Qeiza. Qeiza hel
Whatever you wish, it takes struggle and seriousness to make it happen. *** Xander’s gaze was fixed on Qeiza who was concentrating at her works. He had examined Qeiza’s face for two days from the distance. “I’m pretty sure that she is Miss Qeiza,” Xander muttered several times to himself. He opened Qeiza’s personal data file that he had gathered currently. The last data informed that his boss’ ex-wife had finished her graduate program since a few months ago at one of the most popular universities of this town. Thus, it’s no surprise that she could get job here so easily. The problem was that the young woman he believed to be Qeiza was actually named Kim Ae Ri. Xander had never heard that name before. Was this just a coincidence that those two women had similar face? Or had Qeiza really changed her identity secretly? “Argh!” Xander growled in confusion and bit his fist. How could he let Ansel know if he himself hadn’t been able to gather the valid evidences about his guess yet?
Crossing the line will only cause troubles. *** “Ouch, I felt like I’ve just come back from a battle field.” Qeiza sank her butt on her chair, leaning back lethargic with her both hands dangling limply. She totally felt exhausted. “Did Mr. Malik treat you badly?” Qeiza was startled. She quickly fixed her sitting position. She cursed her carelessness for not paying attention to Chin Hwa’s desk. “You’ve come back?” asked Qeiza. “It’s supposed to be tomorrow, wasn’t it?” Chin Hwa walked up to Qeiza’s desk. “The schedule was supposed so, but the agenda moved forward so I could go home earlier.” “Ah!” Qeiza had nothing to say than ‘Ah’ in silence. She thought Chin Hwa was still abroad. “Tell me!” said Chin Hwa. “Did Mr. Malik treat you impolitely?” Qeiza exhaled hard. “No, he didn’t. But, he made me so tired.” “Huh? He often asked you to work overtime?” “Not really.” “So?” “I don’t know. I hate his dictatorial attitude,” Qeiza explained. “A bit possessive too.” Chin Hwa smile
If you want to catch a butterfly, just grow colorful flowers. Do not ever hunt them because all your efforts will end in vain. *** Qeiza’s heart pumped very fast. She wanted to fight back, but the power of the man that was dragging her was much stronger. When she realized that she was dragged outside of the restaurant through back door, Qeiza tried to elbow that man. “Ouch!” It’s heard the squalled groaning. Qeiza quickly turned around, being ready to launch a follow-up attack targeting the man’s personal asset. “Hold on, Ae Ri!” The man shouted, stopping Qeiza’s movement. “It’s me, Chin Hwa.” “Oppa?” Qeiza was dumbfounded. She didn’t expect that her boss would follow her. “Shshsh!” Chin Hwa hastily dragged Qeiza’s hand, hiding by walking hunched from car to car until arriving at his own car. “Get in quickly!” Chin Hwa commanded. His gaze continued to watch Ansel’s movement in the restaurant. It seemed that he took a glance at his watch on his wrist then rose from his seat.
Love is powerful addiction that can make a man lose control of his senses. *** “You aren’t allowed to park here, Sir!” The young policeman pointed at the blue sign with a circle and a red diagonal line. “Shit! All my lifetime, this is the first time I’m doing a foolish thing and making ashamed of myself,” Ansel grumbled. He leaned back his head on his seat of pride while looking up at the ceiling, still unbelieved that he could be so reckless just because of a woman. “I don’t seem to know you,” Xander commented. He sat on the couch by resting both his hands on his thighs. His fingers interlocked. Meanwhile, his gaze fixed on Ansel who was closing his eyes. “I don’t even know my own self,” Ansel replied without opening his eyes. Then there was a silence. Both of them were busy with their own thoughts, examining Ansel’s first experience that had just dealt with the law. *** “Oh Gosh! So, because of a woman your life could be messed up?” Xander yelled in disbelief after listeni
When you have no intention to find the light, then you’ll forever stay in the darkness. *** “I didn’t think you’re the new CEO of the company M.” “That’s it!” “Oh My God! Should we keep our distance from now on?” Ansel shrugged with a funny mimic. He didn’t also expect that the leader of the company which had become his business rival was his college friend. “It looks like that you’ve already known Mr. Song and Miss Kim very well,” said Ansel. He was affording to dig the information about Dae Hyun's and Qeiza's close relationship in an inconspicuous way. “Of course,” replied Dae Hyun. “We’ve ever become business partners too.” Dae Hyun took a glance at Chin Hwa. “Right, Mr. Song?” “It’s absolutely right!” Chin Hwa replied. Dae Hyun turned his attention to Qeiza. “Ah, Ae Ri … could we talk privately?” Without waiting for Qeiza’s reaction, Dae Hyun dragged her arm, walking fast out of the ballroom. Ansel’s biased eyes darkened. He hated watching that sight. If only he wasn’t
Once in a while, a prey is smarter than the hunter. *** Qeiza left her dresser with a flamboyant face. After she had been working like a prisoner in Ansel’s glass cage for almost a whole month, today she could breathe freely. The fashion show that was performed two days ago had become the finish line for her togetherness with Ansel. Now, she could go back to the embrace of peace, working at Chin Hwa’s office. Qeiza froze in front of her apartment door. A man was standing back to her, but he turned around soon after he heard the sound of the opening door. “Hi, Ae Ri!” Ansel greeted while serving his best smile. BANG! Qeiza reflexively moved backwards and slammed the door so hard. Her heart was pounding worriedly. “Why could he be here in this early morning?” she murmured. “He was absolutely a scary man.” Qeiza peeked through the peeping hole, making sure whether Ansel was still waiting for her in front of the door or had been leaving. “Shit!” Qeiza cursed while seeing that Ans
“You’re damn pretty, Dear ….” Mrs. Kim’s eyes flashed the light of admiration and pride for the new status of Qeiza as her daughter-in-law. “Dae Hyun is so lucky to have you as his wife.” “Mom ….” Qeiza blushed. The guests had dispersed. Now, just Kim’s family left. They were ready to leave the wedding hall. Mr. Kim tapped Dae Hyun’s left shoulder. “Now, Ae Ri is now completely your responsibility.” “Certainly, Dad. I promise to protect her and make her happy.” Dae Hyun reassured Mr. Kim. His hand reflexively wrapped Qeiza’s waist. A wedding car moved slowly and stopped right before Dae Hyun and his family. “Go!” said Mrs. Kim when Qeiza said goodbye with her eyes. Dae Hyun shortly held her hand, being ready to walk to the car. Ansel tapped Xander’s shoulder. He forced the guy to stop when he saw Qeiza and Dae Hyun getting closer to their car. Ansel rashly got out of the car and ran towards Qeiza. “Qei!” he called. Dae Hyun stopped his hand movement that would open the car do
“Why are you so obsessed with me?” “I’m crazy about you. I … can’t live without you.” “You’d been fine for four years,” said Qeiza.”You’ll also definitely live well for the rest of your life.” “Qei, please … give me a chance!” “Sorry, I can’t make it.” “Why? Do you really hate me that much?” “I’ve floated the pieces of my broken heart in the sea of tears,” said Qeiza. “It’ll be useless if you insist to put them together again.” Ansel felt his heart as though had just been torn apart by the sharp fangs of wild animals. It was totally hurt and painful. The sky was suddenly cloudy. The weather in the fall was changeable. The rain could pour at any time. It was like Ansel’s heart that also covered by the dark cloud of sorrows. “I’m sorry, Ansel!” Qeiza said. “From now on, please … stop chasing me!” “But … I’m really being drawn to you, Qei,” said Ansel, still fighting to convince her of the sincerity of his feeling for her. “Thank you. I’m flattered.” “So, will you think about
Listening to Qeiza’s mutter, Mrs. Kim grabbed the album from her hands. She also wanted to see which photo caused her tears flooding her face more and more. “Don’t take it, Mom!” Qeiza robbed back the album from Mrs. Kim’s hands. “I miss my mom and dad so badly.” Mrs. Kim examined the face of little Qeiza on the picture then averted to Qeiza’s face before her, comparing them both. All at once, she rushed to hug Qeiza. “Oh, my dearest ….” Warm liquid flooded her cheeks. “I’m so sorry! It turns out that you’re very close all this time, but … I didn’t recognize you.” After hugging each other for a long time, Mrs. Kim raised Qeiza’s face. She wiped the girl’s tears with her fingers. “Thank you for coming back to us, Dear!” Mrs. Kim pecked Qeiza’s forehead. Mr. Kim also wiped his tears. Dae Hyun was dumbfounded. He was at a loss for words. He had mixed feelings—between being amused and touched. Qeiza did not know how long he stared at her parents’ face with the gaze full of longing.
Ansel tiptoed, getting out of the place where he hid towards Dae Hyun’s entrance door. Once in while he looked back to reassure that no one caught him red handed. Ansel’s fingertips would just touch the doorknob when he felt a hand pulled his collar from behind. He turned his head to the right. The security guard of Dae Hyun’s house welcomed him with a fierce gaze right away. “Shouldn’t you have gone home?” Ansel smiled wryly. “I haven’t said goodbye to Ae Ri yet,” he answered. “Mr. Kim asked me not to let anyone in the house before he came home,” said the security guard. “So, please leave now!” Ansel showed off a sad look. “Just a moment … let me meet Ae Ri before leaving.” “Miss Kim needs to take a rest. She can’t be disturbed.” Ansel’s facial expression turned cloudy from the despair. The security guard couldn’t be persuaded. He could only turn his look to the upper floor when the guy kicked him out of Dae Hyun’s yard. He walked before the cab he ordered coming to fetch him.
Ansel stood up straight away. His blood boiled seeing Dae Hyun carrying Qeiza. Furthermore, when from the distance he saw them both smiling at each other. “Is she no longer able to walk so you have to carry her on your back after doing exercises?” Ansel asked in cold voice. His gaze looked like he wanted to skim Dae Hyun alive. “Let’s get in, Oppa!” Qeiza whispered into Dae Hyun ear. She was reluctant to be near Ansel for a long time. Dae Hyun raised Qeiza’s position that lowered a little on his back. The next second, he walked to the gate, granting Qeiza’s wish. “Hey!” Ansel shouted when the security guard closed the gate without letting him follow them. “Let him in!” said Dae Hyun when his security guard asked him through his gaze. “He seemed to get lost.” Ansel clenched his hands into fists. Dae Hyun’s words were like intentionally insulting him. He could do nothing. In order not to lose Qeiza, he had to swallow the annoyance. He followed Dae Hyun’s steps into the house. “Yo
The stars scattered on the night sky. They sparkled beautifully as if they invited the sparkles of incandescent lights along the Han River stream to joke. They competed with each other to show off their charms to the world. Qeiza was standing on the balcony of her bedroom, embracing her hands. Occasionally she petted her upper arms so the cold weather felt a bit lessen. She took a deep breath. She was resting her palms on the balcony guardrail. Her eyes were travelling, enjoying the beauty of the Han River banks. Yeah. Her adopted parents’ residence was in an elite area with spectacular views of the Han River stream and Namsan Mountain. From her bedroom, Dae Hyun could see Qeiza standing alone on the balcony. He put down the business magazine he read. Their bedrooms were neighbors. Even, their balconies were only separated by an iron fence about less than a meter in height. Here was Dae Hyun now. He jumped over the lower fence. In a blink, he had stood beside Qeiza. He also pampere
Ansel packed his clothes in hurry. Repeatedly he glanced the clock on the wall as if he was afraid that it would run fast to leave him. “What are you doing, Ansel?” Alina walked to close Ansel. Her forehead furrowed when she saw her only son was packing up. He was like going to run away. “I’m going to catch up with Qeiza ASAP, Mom.” Ansel answered without stopping his hand movements, putting his clothes into the suitcase. His eyes didn’t avert to Alina either. “Why? Did Qeiza go back to Indonesia?” Alina got surprised. She had heard nothing about how she was since a few days ago. Ansel stood up straight. His suitcase was full. He came closer to his mother. He squeezed the shoulders of the middle-aged woman gently. “Wish me luck, Mom! I’m struggling hard to make your dream come true.” Alina caressed Ansel’s arm. “So … she really went home?” “She didn’t, Mom. She … she fled to Seoul ….” Ansel strengthened his squeeze on Alina’s shoulders. He forced his lips to smile eagerly. “Th
“What’s wrong?” asked Qeiza. Dae Hyun had just locked his phone. “Daddy is being hospitalized.” “I’m sorry to hear that. How long has he been there?” “Since yesterday.” Dae Hyun grabbed Qeiza’s hand. “Do you mind if we fly to Seoul right away from Bengkulu later?” “What? Are you crazy?” Dae Hyun smiled wryly. He was too early to ask her that question. “Just cancel the vacation! We’re flying home right away.” “Hah! Ae … you ... what did you say?” “Why are you stupid all of sudden, Oppa?” Qeiza glared at him. “We can enjoy the vacation anytime.” Dae Hyun was still dumbfounded. “Are you serious?” “Exceptionally I’m. Visiting daddy is more important. We don’t know how long he will survive.” “Thank you, Ae!” Dae Hyun was touched by Qeiza’s decision. “I promise. I’ll make it up to you another day.” A few seconds later, he called someone. “We’ll fly in two hours,” said Dae Hyun to Qeiza after he ended the call. “Turn around, Sir?” asked the driver that ear-dropped the conversati
“Qeiza! Don’t joke too much!” Amira scolded Qeiza. “What if Mr. and Mrs. Santoso get heart attack, huh?” “Ah, hahaha ….” Santoso laughed again. “So, it’s just kidding, right?” Mrs. Santoso just shook her head while caressing her chest. Raditya exposed a slight smile only. Qeiza sighed and said in a low voice, “It’s up to you if you don’t buy it." “Qei!” Abbas yelled at her. He gave her a deadly stare. Qeiza stared at Raditya seriously. “Don’t you say I never told that.” Qeiza rose. She bowed at Mr. and Mrs. Santoso. “Please forgive me, Uncle, Aunty … I can’t stay here any longer,” she excused. Abbas also stood up. He pressed Qeiza’s shoulders, forcing her to sit back. “What are you doing, Qei? The dinner has just started. It’s impolite to just leave.” Abbas suppressed his voice. He tried to cover the anger boiling in his chest. Taking advantage of Qeiza was not actually as easy as what he thought. “I’m sorry, Uncle! I have another agreement,” Qeiza denied. She raised her hand,
