“You’re always handsome, uncle,” said Ella, with a smile on her face showing her full, good teeth.
As planned, Simon’s barber gave him a good look. He trimmed and shaved his hair for about an hour. They were making him look like a model for a prestigious magazine. At the same time, Seth and Ella cannot contain themselves about how good-looking their uncle is in his new hairstyle.
Simon smiled. “You think so?”
She smiled at him and gave him two thumbs up. “Without a doubt.”
Ella is Seth’s older sibling. Simon seemed as old as her. If she had followed his advice, she would do well in business rather than become a policewoman. Ella didn’t seem interested in their company, as she was more interested in being a policewoman. She holds a Police Academy degree with the highest honor and rank.
“If you were done with your antics, Uncle, it would be nice to have a vacation again before they transferred me to another station,” said Ella.
Seth smirked. Simon glared at Seth and turned towards Ella.
“Are you about to be dispatched? Why?” Simon asked. “You can’t do that. I will ask Samuel to speak to your superior, so….”
Ella laughed. “This is really how it is, uncle. I can’t be at the same station forever, and you know that, don’t you? Besides, Rizal is just three hours away,” Ella explains.
“If that’s the case, I’ll ask Samuel to get you a new car first thing in the morning. I think that makes you feel safer. That means you can go home,” Simon said.
She was the only woman in the family after Samuel’s wife died. Ella is his favorite, perhaps because she is the only rose among the spines. And then there’s Seth, a 17-year-old kid who still makes fun of him. When Samuel dies, Ella and Seth inherit the company, so he wants Ella to be something other than a policewoman. It’s a life-threatening job for her. Of course, he knows, he was in the military when he was 50. On one occasion, it surprised them when a police officer called them to tell them that Ella was in the hospital. Since then, he and Samuel have made it a habit of checking on her while on duty.
“How about me, uncle? Would you buy me a new car?” Seth asked with a twinkle in his eyes like a cute mouse begging for cheese.
Simon raised an eyebrow at Seth. “If you improve your education, I might consider it.”
Seth scratched his head. “My grades are good, Uncle. Well, it’s not the best, but at least I am not failing,” said Seth.
“Hmmm! Considering proper manners and behavior, you are a failure. You’re not showing me any respect. Don’t forget that our age difference is 500 years, even if we look the same age.” Simon said it with a serious face.
Seth frowned but never responded.

A woman was screaming across the street. The scream awakens Simon’s blank mind while he walks as his morning exercise.
“What happened?” He asked as he approached the woman.
“That man took my bag.” And the woman screamed.
Simon dashed, like a firebolt, and chased the man. Being professional in his illegal job, the man ran fast and looked adept at stealing and snatching things. It was a regular market day, and people were everywhere, giving him a hard time catching the culprit.
He immediately pushed the man’s back so that he fell into the fish tubs in the wet market. He punched it once, and it fell. Many people watch them as if they were watching a live-action film. Simon immediately grabbed the woman’s bag and turned his back on the man. But as he was walking away, the people were shouting, so he turned his back to the big man again and stabbed him in the stomach. The man smiled at him as if he had repaid him. Simon felt the pain and the stabbing of the knife in his stomach. The man also pulled the knife out of his stomach and tried to grab his bag. He gripped the bag. The man frowned and looked at his stomach, which had traces of blood on his clothes—perhaps wondering why he was so strong and still standing despite stabbing him.
Astonished, the man was slightly stunned, so he banged his head hard on the man’s head, and it fell into the tub full of fish. He looked around, dizzy. He felt a liquid flow from his head down to the corner of his eye. Everyone is worried and shocked.
“Who owns them?” he asked people as he took his wallet out of his pocket.
Three women and a man approached him. They do not speak and stare. He handed five thousand each to the four owners of the bathtub.
“I’m sorry,” said Simon.
One of the four asked him, “Are you alright?”
He just nodded and turned his back on them.
-
He returned to the woman to return the bag when he noticed she was talking to a policewoman. As he came closer, both turned towards him and continued talking again. And in the blink of an eye, the police officer was trying to get closer to him. He stepped back with an adrenaline rush.
“Geez, wait,” Simon said to the police.
But the policewoman wouldn’t listen. He had a bad feeling about it, so he also ran away when she ran to him. A police officer was pursuing him. While running, he didn’t expect to enjoy escaping from a police officer. He was like a happy child doing what he was doing. It’s been decades since he ran like that. He went into an alley and hid.
He leaned against the wall of an establishment. ‘How come it never occurred to me to be a thief? Running from the police is quite amusing.’ Simon thought.
Simon laughed at what he thought. He stopped laughing while the police officer stood before him.
Right in the car, he was already telling the police what had happened, but she didn’t believe him. The woman he helped wouldn’t say a word. She seated herself quietly beside him.
He sat on the other side of the table, as did the woman.
“I told you, I was just helping her. Why don’t you look at me? I got stabbed because I helped her, and now you’re accusing me? I can sue you.” said Simon.
The policewoman looked him in the eye. “This woman says differently. She said you grabbed her bag”.
And Simon looked at the woman. “Miss, I didn’t take your bag. I did something for you. I even gave it back to you. Exceptionally, I got beaten and stabbed. You’re such a liar.”
The policewoman glared at Simon. He stared, but she suddenly avoided his eyes.
“Uncle Simon?” wondered Ella.
The policewoman and Simon turned around.
“Ella.” “Sarge.” The police officer and Simon spoke at the same time.
Both women salute each other.
“What are you doing here, uncle?” asked Ella. “Oh! What happened to you? You are all right, uncle? You have blood all over you.”
“Yes, I’m fine. You know that I’m always okay,” Simon said.
“Your uncle?” asked the policewoman.
“Yes, sergeant. What happened?” she asked.
“He took my bag; I was walking, and then he seized my bag, so I was screaming,” said the woman.
Ella looked at the woman. “Are you sure this guy took your bag?” asked Ella in disbelief.
“Yes. I’m sure.” said the woman.
Shortly after, two police officers arrived. With them was a man with a bloodstained forehead. Simon stared at the man and the two police officers. He stood up and went up to the man.
“What’s his case?” Ella asked her colleagues.
Neither officer could answer Ella’s questions because four people approached them. They immediately greeted Simon and approached him.
“Boss, thank you so much for being early. You don’t know how much you helped us,” said the man.
“Do you know him?” the policewoman asked.
“We just met a few minutes ago. He went after this thief. They even fought. Our fish tubs broke, and they scattered the fish along the way. And he paid for the damage,” said the woman.
The officer looked at Simon and then at the woman.
“Mom, help me. They’re going to lock me up.” said the man holding the two police officers.
He spoke with the woman seated at the table. The lady who accused Simon and everyone else there looked at each other.
-
When Ella brings Simon home, he finds Seth in the living room. He was sitting there, watching a film. Simon sat beside Seth and watched the movie. Seth spoke with Simon.
“What happened to you, uncle?” said Seth to Simon. “Why are you so bloody?”
Simon didn’t even look at Seth. “I went after a thief. He stabbed me, and I hit him on the head using mine.”
“Did you do that? Wow, you’re an amazing uncle. Too bad I was not there to witness it with my own eyes,” Seth laughed.
Simon looked at Seth. “It was I who was accused by the woman whom I helped. She said I took her bag, so the police went after me.”
Seth’s eyes grew bigger. “Uncle, the police went after you.”
“Luckily, witnesses came, and the burglar was an accomplice of the woman I helped,” Simon said.
“But why do you seem happy?” asked Seth, bewildered.
“When the police ran to me, I ran as well.” Simon laughed.
“Did you run from the police?” Seth said this in shock.
“Yeah, she chased me until she caught me.” Simon was giggling.
Simon laughs as Seth looks at him.
“Uncle, why did you do such a thing? And you’re still thrilled because the police are chasing you? Are you crazy, uncle? I thought you were a decent man, “Seth said with one eyebrow raised.
Simon stared at Seth. “You know you are truly rude to me. How about I take away your inheritance?”
Seth grabbed his head. “Wh-whoa! Uncle, did you forget that normal people don’t want to be pursued by a police officer, but you’re ecstatic that it happened to you? Come on. You are an unbelievable uncle!”
“Because I haven’t been able to do that in decades,” Simon said.
“Being arrested by law enforcement?” Seth asked.
Simon hit Seth one more time. “Silly!”
“Uncle, it hurts!” Seth’s complaint
“I say it’s better to run for a reason than for exercise,” Simon said, grinning.
“Didn’t you do all the work? Why don’t you try to be a thief, uncle? After all, you want to be pursued by the police?” said Seth.
“Oh, seriously…,” said Simon.
Seth made a quick run for his life. He was laughing.
“That boy is a nuisance,” Simon said, upset.
It’s Monday morning. Because of recent events, Simon took a taxi instead of using his car to go to his office. It’s been a while since he tried to be average. At the hospital he owns, everyone greeted him with a welcoming smile. “Good morning, doc!” everybody greeted him. Simon smiled. “Good morning.” Clara, his assistant nurse, follows him immediately when he arrives at his office. She got some coffee. His office is simple and cool as well. “How’s your leaving, Doc? Were you able to rest?” said Clara. Clara faced him with both hands on the table and a slight bow. He looked at her open uniform and almost got a look at her breasts. Simon glanced away from the uniform. He looked at Clara. “I said to you, Clara, to repair your uniform. You are a nurse, not a brassiere model,” says Simon. Simon instantly sipped his coffee. He had a fresh taste of coffee, but he ignored it. If it were poison, that would be brilliant. Clara smiled and stared into his face. In how the woman looked at
Simon never came home to monitor Ella. He sent Samuel home to rest. His friend is no longer a kid, and he doesn’t want him to be the next one to disappear. Simon was standing by the room’s window, staring out. He recalled the help he had received from his ancestor, Samuel. That is how he cared about his family up to this point. The Year 1500 Lando and Simon stood at the window watching Helena nursing her baby. Helena gave birth several months ago. Though the couple showed no malice, Simon was still ashamed of Helena. The couple had a son, and they named him Rafael. “I heard from the town that the sultan had become sick, a serious illness. No babaylan could heal the sultan,” he said. “Is it infectious?” asked Simon. “I’m not sure,” Lando said while looking at Helena. “I’m worried about them. They say there are many sick people in other cities, and they are slowly approaching us.” “We are a long way from the town. We’re probably not going to be infected,” Simon says. “This infectio
There wasn’t much of a crowd when Simon left the hospital, so he decided to walk. It’s a good thing Seth volunteered to check on Ella. He had already walked a half-mile, and it surprised him when a car ran into him and threw him a few meters back because of the impact. The front of the car that hit him was slightly smashed.Luna didn’t dare move. When she sank into it, she quickly exited the car and immediately approached the man lying on the road who still seemed alive. Her face was a few inches away from him as she was about to check on him when he suddenly opened his eyes. To her shock, her right palm landed instantly on his face, which surprised the man.“Whoa! You know, you are a brute.” Simon said, while caressing his face that the girl hit him. “You crashed on me and then slapped me,” he continued. He got up from lying on the road, rubbing his cheek. Simon sat down and turned to the woman, kneeling on the road. From the look on her face, she must be daydreaming. And Simon rose,
Seth’s stomach almost hurts when he laughs. Simon raised his eyebrows and looked at Seth. Simon sat on the couch, with Seth on the other side. Sam and Ella were standing across from Simon.“Uncle, frankly, you don’t seem cool at all. You look more like a criminal.” She bites her cheek inside to avoid laughing.“What were you thinking and agreeing with Seth’s nonsense?” said Samuel.Simon hasn’t answered his question. He just took a deep breath.“And as for you, Seth? You seem like a young, uneducated guy, and you always screw up your Uncle Simon. You have no respect at all,” said Samuel.“This will be the last time you tease Uncle. Once you do it again, I’ll make sure you get locked up, Seth,” said Ella. “I mean that too.”“I have to rest,” said Simon.Simon stood up and went to the second floor of his room. She signed for Seth to apologize to Simon, but Simon was already in his room.Simon walked into the room. He was sitting on his bedroom balcony and looking up at the sky. It was a
They were both out of breath as they emerged from the water. When she recovered, it shocked Simon when she suddenly slapped him. “What the… Why did you slap me?” said Simon in shock, rubbing his cheek. The woman was silent. Instead, she embraced herself. Simon looked at the woman and prepared to undress when she kicked him on the knee. Simon groaned. “Well, why have you hurt me again?” asked Simon with reluctance. “If you plan something evil against me, I can break your bones,” said the woman. “You’re such a violent woman. Didn’t you know how to thank someone? I have helped you,” said Simon. “What have you helped me with? Did I order you?” the woman said rudely. He stared at the woman’s face. “You are going to commit suicide, Mademoiselle,” said Simon. “Suicide? What are you saying? I just slipped and…” said the woman. “Ah, grrr. Why am I explaining this to you? Annoying!” The woman rose and walked while embracing herself. Simon also rose, removed his clothes, and went after t
Luna looked at Simon. Simon noticed this. “You’re staring at me again; you want to strangle me?” Simon asked.Luna averted her eyes from Simon. “I don’t think there’s anything wrong with looking at you. Unless, of course, you want me to choke you.” Luna said.Simon laughed. “By the way, the man who shot Ella is already behind bars,” said Luna.Simon frowned. “When was that guy caught? Why are we not informed?”“We told Ella that the shooter had been caught. He got caught in a buy-bust operation. He’s an addict,” said Luna.“I would like to meet this man,” said Simon.“For what? To take revenge?” said Luna.“Yes,” he merely said.“I won’t let you see him,” Luna replied.Their conversation broke down when the server arrived and placed their order. When the food was placed on the table, the waiter left immediately. Luna wasn’t saying anything. The two were quiet. They were almost done eating when Luna spoke again.“Leave me here, Simon, after we eat,” said Luna.Simon frowned. “Why?” He g
Ella was surprised as they walked into the house. She was sitting on the couch while she was busy with her laptop. She was still surprised to see Luna; she and Seth were handcuffed.“Luna?” She asked with a frown.Ella immediately reached out to her brother and hit him. “Why do you habitually beat me?” complains Seth.“And you complain again? What did you do this time? Why are you handcuffed?” Ella asked with irritability.“I used this sergeant to hook him up earlier,” Luna said, taking off Seth’s handcuffs.“Why the hell are you acting like this? What’s wrong with you?” asked Ella.Luna has distanced herself from both. Simon pulled Luna onto the couch for a seat. They watched the siblings.“I can’t accept that Dad is gone. Why is it so easy for you to forget him?” Seth got mad. “Daddy doesn’t mean anything to you.”“Enough of judging me, Seth. You have no clue how I feel. If the loss of Dad hurts you, I’m hurt too. What would you have me do? Do the things you do.” Ella said. “Become w
Simon didn’t go to the hospital; he had to visit the company, so he went there. Everybody was surprised at his sudden stop, but the employees welcomed him immediately. The local workers knew him as Samuel’s brother. In Samuel’s office, Secretary Ann was astonished to see him. She smiled gently as she walked beside him in Samuel’s office.“Coffee, sir?” asked the secretary. He merely looked at the woman and the table where Samuel was seated.“Yes, please. Thanks,” says Simon.Secretary Anne went outside while he was walking around the room. Samuel’s memories are still there. He got close to the window. He took the curtain off a bit to see the whole city. There’s still a pain in his chest. He approached Samuel’s desk, touching the backrest of the swivel chair as he looked into the room from there. Samuel’s room has a mini lounge, where he welcomes essential company guests when there are few. He sat on the swivel chair and made some movements. He chuckled a bit to speed up the rotation of
The guests clink their glasses together to express their desire for further kisses from the newlywed. Simon laughed and put up one hand to encourage the guests to keep clinking the glasses. He wrapped his hand around Luna’s waist and leaned her back as he kissed her. Luna’s arms encircled Simon’s neck as it wrapped them around his. —Flashback— Luna grabbed Simon’s hand right away so that it wouldn’t go all the way under the water. She opened his mouth and gave him air as she tried to swim upward. Later, two divers gave Simon air and helped them swim back up. Luna gasped for air as soon as she pulled her head out of the water. Luna’s fellow police officers pulled Simon away. “Let me..” Luna said, and then her colleagues gave her space. She put her ear next to Simon’s mouth and nose. Without feeling the wind on his face, he looked to see if his chest was moving. She checks Simon’s pulse for 10 seconds. She put the heel of one of her hands on the middle of the breast at the nipple lin
Simon woke up because he could feel his bed moving. He got up and noticed that one of his hands was handcuffed. When he turned around, he saw Seth and Luna standing at the end of the yacht. Their mouths are covered with tape, and their wrists, chests, and feet are tied.“You said you wouldn’t hurt them,” Simon said.Rafael smiled. “I lied.”“You are crazy!” Simon retorted.Rafael did not answer. He just laughed as if Simon was just joking. When Simon looked at his arm, he saw he was drawing blood again. He tried to take it off, but he handcuffed one of his hands to the pole and the other was numb. Rafael had taken blood from one of his arms, and now he couldn’t move that arm. He didn’t know how much blood he had taken, but he already felt weak and lightheaded.“Stop fighting, Simon. If you can get out of there, I will throw those two into the sea.” Rafael said as he sat down in front of Simon. “Think about how they could swim if they were tied together.”Simon was breathing hard, and
Rafael tied Luna’s hands and feet together and taped her mouth shut as he did with Seth. Luna was struggling to get away when Rafael picked her up. He lifted her onto his shoulder and carried her to the garage. He set Luna down. Later, Luna’s eyes grew wide when she saw Rafael holding a syringe. He immediately injected it into her arm. At first, she was still struggling, but she couldn’t keep her eyes from closing.“Don’t worry, you only slept for about half a day or so,” Rafael said, laughing. “As long as you don’t get in the way of my plans. I don’t want you with me anymore...” Rafael carried Luna to the car’s compartment. “But I thought I could use you just in case, you know, your boyfriend didn’t agree.”Rafael closed the trunk of the car with a smile. He went back into the house and walked up to Seth with a smile. He started by looking at Seth.“For an 18-year-old, you have a muscular body. Do you go to the gym?” Rafael asked.Rafael pulled Seth’s arm up and forced it up. “Just j
Ella noticed that someone was being followed by a motorcycle after she had already gotten on the highway. She glanced in the side mirror and just let the motorcycle follow her. She was almost to the village where she lived when a motorbike blocked her way, forcing her to step on the brakes. When she saw the man leave his motorbike, she immediately ready her gun and waited for him to come toward her. When the man got close to the driver’s seat window, it knocked. Ella quickly opened the door, which the man didn’t expect, so when the door hit the rider’s body, he fell a short distance away. Before he got up, Ella got out of the car and immediately pointed the gun at the man. The man immediately lifted one hand and used the other to open the front of the helmet.“This is Sanchez, ma’am...”Ella didn’t immediately believe that’s why the man took off his helmet. When Ella saw who it was, she just put the gun back on her hip.“What are you doing, Sanchez?” Ella asked. “I said I’m fine. You
Simon is at home to rest. The private doctor who looked after Simon gave him back the blood that had been taken from him. Since they left Nueva Ecija, he hasn’t woken up. The doctor said it was only normal. Simon’s body had lost too much blood.Simon was sleeping, and Luna was sitting next to the bed and watching him. Seth brought Luna food. Seth put it on the table next to the couch, and Luna went over to it right away.“Ella has already left,” said Seth. “Why doesn’t uncle wake up?”Luna gave a headshake. “Rafael looks like he drained his blood. That person is horrible.” Luna took a bite of the burger.“Because it’s easier if he takes Uncle’s blood and puts it in him before he kills him.”“Yes, that’s right. That’s what he wants to do.” Luna said. “Thank goodness we found him right away. If not, what your uncle has been hoping for since then would have happened.”Seth chuckled. “As if you are going to let that happen.”“Of course not, no,” Luna said, and then took a bite of the burg
Seth keeps looking in the library for Simon’s diary. He looked in every cabinet and on every shelf for it. Ella and Luna are at the hospital waiting for an update.“Why did it take Zev so long to find it?” Ella asked.“Don’t you know where Simon might have hidden it?” asked Luna. “Or he might have said it before and you just don’t remember.”“When Uncle was telling stories, he never said the name. Even the years, you still have to confirm with him.”Luna said nothing—she just took a deep breath. He couldn’t imagine what Rafael could do to Simon. So far, they have heard nothing, but she’s sure Simon is still alive.———-When Simon woke up, it was dark outside. He was so dizzy that he didn’t know how much blood Rafael had taken from him. And he still doesn’t take away the devices used. He felt cold. A sudden drop in blood pressure can also bring on chills. His heart needs some time to pump fresh blood through his body. That’s why it makes him feel weak, dizzy, shiver, and sweat. He als
Simon woke up on a bed, unable to move. Rafael tied his hands and legs to the corners of the bed. He was in a room that wasn’t furnished, but the bed was comfortable.“Why did you tie me here? I told you I wouldn’t run away, didn’t I?”“Yeah, I heard,” Rafael said. “But I don’t trust you. Also, you need to get some rest.”“Why? What’re you going to do?”Rafael smiled. “What kind of food do you want to eat? Just tell me what it is, and I’ll buy it. I’ll spoil you while you’re here with me.”Simon saw Rafael was dressed as if he was going to leave. “Where’re you going?”“Am I supposed to say where I am going to, uncle?” Simon said, chuckling.“If you are going to leave, let me go. Even if you just tie my legs. What if I need to go to the bathroom?”“Hold on, I’m just fast. I won’t last long. Also, if I do that, you will wear yourself out. That’s not possible, because I told you, you need to rest today. Behave, I’ll be gone in a moment...”Rafael got up and left the room quickly. Simon s
“Rafael...”The man was not too far away from them with a revolver in his hand and was aiming it at Luna. The man was staring at Luna. When Luna was about to approach Simon, Rafael shot again, and this time it was between her and Simon. Luna stepped back.“You..” Rafael said to Simon. “Come here if you don’t want me to shoot that policewoman again.”“Simon, no!”Rafael shot again and hit Luna on the other leg, causing her to fall to her knees. Simon’s eyes got wider.“What? Are you approaching or do you want the next bullet to hit the girl’s head?“No, don’t shoot Luna, please.”Luna was sweating cold, her hand was numb, and now her leg was too. He leaned against the car’s front.“What are you... what are you doing, Simon?” asked Luna.“I am waiting, Simon Gonzales...”“I’ll go with you, but don’t hurt her anymore...” Simon tried to stand.“No, no Simon!”“Do not worry about me. Call Ella and have her come pick her up so she can go with you to the hospital...”“No Simon. Don’t follow
“Alright, I’ll call you later.”Ella is working in her office. She is now awaiting an update from her troops who are out in the field and who are keeping surveillance surrounding the building and within it. Rafael hasn’t shown up yet, and nothing out of the ordinary has happened.“There is no sign of the killer in the area, ma’am,” a police officer said from her desk. She nodded and let the person out. Ella set the two elbows down on the table, brought both of her hands together, and rested them on her forehead. When the killer doesn’t show up after a week, they have to stop the operation and leave Simon with Luna. When the phone rang, she immediately turned to answer it. Luna calls her. Before she picked up the phone, she took a deep breath.“Luna, something has happened?” Ella asked.“Yeah..”“Is Rafael there?” Ella asked, surprised.“No!” Luna suddenly answered on the other line.“What do you mean then?”“We are now at the mall and the jewelry shop.”“Where? The mall?” Ella looked
