Chapter 81

Demetria scrutinized everything Ike did for the rest of the day. Every look. Every word. Nothing made sense, and yet, Demetria looked at everything in a brand new light. Jack was capable of love.

It seemed so farfetched. The idea of him loving anyone other than himself. Or anyone loving him.

Demetria watched him most of the evening until he seemed to become uncomfortable and excused himself to bed, which was what she wanted the entire time. To go to bed. To wait on Kerry because she needed to feel his touch.

To feel real again.

She showered, locked her door, though she didn't really see the point, and curled into the sheets of her bed. The minutes ticked by slowly, and her brain raced with thoughts that blocked her way to sleep.

Sighing, she turned to her side and tried to count sheep, and slowly, after what felt like forever, she drifted off. Moments later, after her body relaxed and she began to fall into a deep sleep, Kerry zapped into the room.
