Ember Corbin
The situation at the kindergarten was insane when I arrived.
After earning a glare from Ms. Sophie, I engrossed myself in taking care of the kids. Apparently, they were running around because one of them had brought a fake cockroach.
"Peter, if you do this again, I will double your Math homework. Do you want me to do that?" I asked a five-year-old student of mine. He was the one who had brought a fake cockroach, scaring the entire class.
He shook his head quietly. Lowering his gaze, he said, "Sorry, Ms. Corbin."
I ruffled his hair with a smile and said, "It's okay. Now, go back to your seat."
After that incident, I started taking the class.
###
It was a really busy and bothersome day. All I could think of was what had happened in the morning. Even though it was a misunderstanding, I was still abducted. The horrific part was the small claustrophobic room. Did the Mafia leaders have such scary cells to capture their enemies?
Gosh, that was so scary.
I knew I needed a break from everything that was going on. These two days were too much for me to handle.
I closed the novel I was reading and took a sip of my hot chocolate while sitting on my couch. Taking my phone, I decided to call my best friend, Candy Dallas. She was a bartender at one of Lance's casinos—see? Lance and I were always fated to cross paths. I had never been to her workplace before, maybe which was why I had never met Lance before; not that I think Lance would be strolling around leisurely inside his own casino.
Candy picked up the call on the second ring and greeted, "Hey, Em. Sup?"
A bright smile formed on my lips hearing her voice. "Hey, Candy. I am great, and you know what? I have never been so much better," I replied, not wanting to let her even get a hint of what was happening with me. She would be worried about me for no reason.
"That's awesome. I am currently going to work now. You know, my shift starts from the evening till five in the morning," she informed me.
I hummed in response. "Yes, you do a few hours extra for more money."
She would get paid hourly depending on her work. It was actually nice and tiring at the same time.
"Money is life, Em."
I chuckled. "Candy, I am so bored these days. I need a hangout."
"How about we go to the mall tomorrow after your work? Then, I will head to my work after shopping," Candy offered.
Shopping seemed like a great idea. I could be distracted and stop thinking of what has been happening to me for these two days.
"Sounds great. So we will meet at the big mall near Happy Kindergarten?" I asked her to be sure of the location.
"Okay, let's meet at the entrance tomorrow," she confirmed. "I just arrived at the casino. Talk to you later then." With that, she had cut the call.
I heaved a sigh and finished checking the test copies of the kids before my eyes started feeling heavy. I didn't realize when sleep engulfed me.
###
I was waiting for Candy at the entrance of the mall. After teaching the kids, I walked here straight as per the plans I and Candy made together. It was afternoon, and I was glad that half of the day passed without seeing Lance. Maybe, today I wouldn't bump into him or get shot by mistake.
However, only half a day passed, and there was an evening and night as well. So I still couldn't label this day as a perfect day until the clock hit twelve. Who knows, I might just get stabbed by one of Lance's enemies and then meet Lance in the hospital after regaining consciousness?
My heart leaped in fear when someone placed a hand over my shoulder. I turned around at that instant, only to find a familiar blonde smiling brightly at me.
Putting my hand over my chest, I said, "Geez, you almost gave me a heart attack, Candy."
Candy pulled me into a hug. "It's been a week since we had our last hangout," she mumbled.
"Well, we were busy, I guess," I mumbled and broke the hug. "By the way, Candy, we better follow a budget. If we spend it all at once on shopping, my world tour will remain a dream forever." A frown appeared on my face.
I didn't want to spend all of my savings on shopping, but Candy was a shopaholic, so I always ended up spending more than usual because of her. She would insist on buying more things for me, and I would end up getting convinced.
"Fine, we will buy limited things," she responded. "But mostly, we will see new stuff and make a list to buy later when we become a billionaire."
I nodded my head. "May we be so rich that we can buy the entire mall," I said mockingly, and she laughed. I ended up laughing with her too. "Now, let's go inside and roam around till we can find something affordable."
We entered the mall and started looking around for different clothes and accessories. We tried some sunglasses just to click nice pictures to post them later on social media. I really enjoyed spending time with Candy because our mindset was the same.
"I have been going on dates with this awesome hot guy," Candy informed me as I stepped into a shop of watches. The wristwatches seemed very nice and classy.
"Send me his picture, and we can judge together whether he's good enough or not," I answered and looked at a beautiful wristwatch, which was obviously beyond my budget. I could only afford to look at it from afar. "Did you like anything from here, Candy?"
"Not yet. I am still looking, but what about you?"
I pointed my index finger to the beautiful wristwatch. "Just look at this beauty," I mumbled, wishing I had enough savings to even afford this wristwatch.
"Oh, this is really nice, but—" Candy stopped midway and was looking at the other side. I followed her gaze. "Oh, my God. Look at that watch, Ember. This is so cool. I want to buy it." When our eyes fell on the price tag, she uttered, "Well, maybe I will tell someone in the future to give it to me as a gift."
I felt bad after hearing it. Candy never asked for anything as a gift from me. If I had enough money to buy the wristwatch, I would've bought it for her since her birthday was around the corner.
"Let's go, Em. I heard there is a sale," Candy informed me and grabbed my hand, pulling me out of the shop.
After buying plenty of clothes and some extra stuff on sale, we were now sitting in a cafe inside the mall, waiting for our food to arrive. We needed to have a snack to raise our energy bar since we were so tired after shopping for so long.
We had bought plenty of stuff, still, I wished to buy that expensive wristwatch for Candy. She has been there for me all the time. That was the least I could do for her. I should spend all of my savings for the world tour on the gift. Yes, it was a nice idea.
"Candy, while the food is on its way, I realized that I forgot to buy something. So I am going to buy it," I told her. Before she could ask what I wanted to buy, leaving my phone on the table, I stormed off the café.
I took large steps towards the store and got in.
"Good evening, Ma'am. What do you want to buy?" the female seller behind the counter asked with a polite smile.
This was such an expensive shop. Even the female in front of me seemed like she earned more than me.
"Uh... Good evening. Can you show me that wristwatch? The one with stones," I told her.
Immediately, she took out the watch and showed it to me. "This is specially imported from Switzerland. It's only twenty thousand dollars."
As soon as she said that, I gave a tight-lipped smile. I didn't even have that much money as my savings. How would I buy it? But I really want it for Candy.
"Shall I pack it, Ma'am?" she asked me.
"Yeah..." I told her and looked around the shop. My eyes stopped looking around the room when I saw the familiar black-haired man. A smile crept on my face.
It was Lance, and he was a billionaire. Paying twenty thousand dollars was nothing for him, right? I could pay him back sometime in the far future; not like it would matter either way.
"Ah, Miss, you see. That's my boyfriend, Lance Storm." I pointed my index finger towards Lance, who was talking to the other person. He didn't notice me.
"Oh, my God. This is great. Is he really your boyfriend?" the woman urged me to continue.
Sucking in a deep breath, I replied with confidence, "Yes, he is my boyfriend. I am in a hurry, so he will pay for my bill. Just tell him that Ember Corbin told you about paying the bill, and he will do it without any hesitation." I was worried wondering what I would do if she wanted any proof. I had to show enough confidence so that she wouldn't have any doubts. "Kindly pack the wristwatch. I am getting late," I said.
"Yes, Ma'am. Wait." The woman handed me the bag with the wristwatch. "Here you go. Have a great day!" She bowed to me slightly.
I gave a nervous chuckle and fastened my pace while leaving the shop. As soon as I was out, I heaved a sigh in relief, placing a hand over my chest. Then, I ran to the café like a maniac.
Oh, my God. I just trapped Lance Storm.
If he saw me next time, he would definitely stab me to death and push my body off the bridge.
When I saw Candy waiting for me as the food was served at the table, I shrugged off all thoughts and approached her. I sat on my chair and said, "Before you ask what I went to buy, here is a gift for you." I kept the bag in front of her. "An advanced birthday gift for you."
Her eyes grew as wide as saucers. "You went to buy a gift for me, Em?" she asked in disbelief.
"Yes, Ma'am," I spoke up, while she opened the birthday gift.
A squeal escaped her lips after seeing the wristwatch. "Oh, my God, oh, my God. You bought this for me, didn't you? Oh, my God. I am... I don't know how to thank you, Em. I..." She was caressing the watch with her shaky hands. "This is so beautiful."
I grinned. "It's all for you."
"I… gimme a hug," she let out and got up, pulling me into a big hug. "Thank you so much for this. It must've been so expensive. How did you pay for it? Don't tell me you spent your savings."
"How I paid, is a surprise," I mumbled after we broke from the hug. As I was sitting, I took my chocolate shake in my hand. While taking a sip, my eyes fell on the entrance of the café.
I found a pair of green eyes throwing daggers at me, making me choke on my drink. I was coughing hard.
"Are you okay, Em?" Candy asked me.
I nodded my head, still looking at Lance who was watching me from a distance. I gulped some water in one go.
"I have to go to the restroom, excuse me," Candy told me and walked away, leaving me alone at the table.
As soon as Candy left, Lance started taking huge steps in my direction. I wanted to make a run for it, but I couldn't leave Candy alone. Besides, there were too many shopping bags that I couldn't carry alone—though the sight would be funny if I did.
Shit, Ember, it's not the time to think about that.
The blank look on Lance's face was scaring the shit out of me. Was he about to make me his slave till I repaid him the money?
Soon enough, Lance was standing near my table. I stared down at my untouched sandwich, not wanting to have eye contact with him. He pulled the chair Candy was sitting on and sat across from me.
Okay, you still have time, Run away, Ember, suggested my subconscious.
Immediately, I stood up from my seat, preparing to run to the washroom and grab Candy before escaping through the window inside. The shopping bags were replaceable, not our lives. I was about to walk away, but a hand grabbed my wrist. I knew it was Lance, yet I didn't look down.
"Sit," he ordered, making a shiver run down my spine.
I listened to him quietly and sat back on my chair. This time, I met his gaze, but I couldn't read his face. It was still empty. I wondered what was going on in his mind.
I watched him getting something out of his pocket. My eyes grew bigger in terror at the sight of a pocket knife. Was he really going to stab me and throw me off the bridge?
"Lance..." I tried to talk, but I somehow lost my voice.
Lance held my right hand and placed it on the table. Opening the pocket knife, he started caressing its sharp edge over my soft skin. He murmured in a dangerous tone, "You are so dead, Ms. Ember Corbin."
Chapter 6: No Bothering - DealEmber CorbinI regretted not making a run for it and sitting down here to listen to Lance.Even though there was bustling going on around us, all I could hear was the pin-drop silence between the two of us as the cold metal was firmly pressed on my skin. If I moved even a little bit, I might end up losing a finger or two, or maybe even end up losing my right hand. If it wasn't for the knife, I would feel like I was in love because my heartbeat was running like it was on a marathon. After spending an entire month in the mental asylum, I thought nothing would ever scare me like this. But the latest incident with rapists a few nights ago and today was bringing out that extreme fear. Fear engulfed my entire being, and I was shivering. I gulped, afraid to look into his cold green eyes.He hadn't uttered a single word after saying I was so dead. Should I give an explanation for my deeds and apologize to him before it was too late?Better late than never, Ember
Chapter 7: Clubbing Gone WrongEmber CorbinIt had been eight days since my deal with Lance. After that, we never talked with each other ever again. I saw him once near a café and wanted to go say hi but refrained from doing so. He didn't want to be friends with me, I had to respect that.It was evening, and I was sitting with a chocolate ice cream tub in my hand while watching a movie on Netflix when my phone rang up. I paused the movie and picked up the call seeing it was Candy. It was supposed to be her work hour soon, then why was she calling me?"Hey," I greeted her. "Is everything okay? You were supposed to get ready for work.""Hey, Em. Yeah, everything is okay.""Then, why did you call me? Do you have less work pressure today?" I asked curiously."Tomorrow is Sunday, which means you are free tonight. Why don't we have a girls' night out today?" she offered.I looked at myself, wearing a long oversized t-shirt with shorts, sitting comfortably on the couch. "As much as it sounds
Chapter 8: Lost On RoadsEmber Corbin"It will be wiser if you put the gun down. Don't you think so, Savannah?" Lance uttered coldly.A shiver ran down my spine hearing his tone. It was the same tone he used when he was playing with the knife over my hand eight days ago. But I shouldn't be scared because this time it wasn't me at gunpoint. Well, technically I was under gunpoint, but I wasn't the one being threatened by Lance. How did Lance know her name, though? Wait, what was he doing here in the first place when I clearly remember Faith telling me he hated crowds? When the woman, whom Lance called 'Savannah' didn't lower her gun, I retorted, "See? She isn't wise. If she was, she wouldn't even argue with me in the first place. I mean, do I look like a person who will argue?""Shut up," Lance cut me off harshly, and I sealed my mouth. Glaring at Savannah, he repeated for the final time, "Down or trust me, your family won't have a body for you to place in the coffin."Gulping hard, Sav
Chapter 9: GraveyardEmber CorbinWe were lost.I should've paid attention to the street. It was all my fault."This is why you should talk less," Lance said, frustration visible in his voice.I bit my lower lip and looked at the deserted street after stealing a glance from Lance. He was clearly annoyed, and I was the one bothering him. I shouldn't have told him to give me a lift in the first place. Now, he would think I was definitely the most annoying person he ever met."You know what? You can drop me here," I offered."And let you get injured so that you can call the cops on me? No, thanks." Lance leaned his head back against the headrest, taking in a few deep breaths. We were currently inside the car, parked at the side of the street, surrounded by huge trees.Due to the air conditioner in the car and my revealing dress, I was starting to feel cold, but I was afraid to say anything to Lance now."It's okay, you can drop me here. I will find my way home, and I swear, I won't call
Chapter 10: A Threat Of Friendship?Ember Corbin"Why are we dropping you in a graveyard?" Lance questioned at last after I stepped out of his car. "Are you visiting someone for your mom?"I turned back to see him looking at me from the rolled-down windshield. Giving him a firm smile, I replied, "I am going to meet someone. Do you want to accompany me?" Before he could say something, I added, "Only if you have time."He looked at his wristwatch and heaved a sigh before getting out of the car. He was wearing a buttoned-up black shirt with black jeans, and I had to admit, the outfit looked really nice on him; especially for the occasion."Today is Sunday, so..." he trailed off.Chuckling, I put my hands in the pocket of my black hoodie. The weather wasn't that cold, yet I wore a hoodie with my shorts because it was comfortable and I had intended to go to the supermarket only. "I never knew Mafia leaders had a holiday too," I commented and started walking to the entrance of the graveyard
Chapter 11: Forced HangoutEmber CorbinI was on my way home from work, keeping an eye on my surroundings all the time. What if someone attacked me from behind?I had to stay cautious after that threat I received last night. I eyed the security guard of a shopping mall I just crossed. He seemed suspicious. What if he was going to assault me once the traffic police behind me disappeared?Fastening my pace, I decided to change my route home. Instead of using the regular street, I chose the new street which I hadn't noticed before. The threat letter meant someone was going to kill me, so the killer had to keep an eye on my daily activities, which meant he knew what streets I used on a regular basis. Naturally, those places would be the best places to catch me and finish me off.The worst part was, that I had no idea who was going to kill me or who was hired to kill me, but all I knew was, that it was connected to my past.I had been on a run for some time now. I changed two jobs and two
Chapter 12: Flower DonationLance StormI just got home after a long day. It was six in the morning now. While I was returning home from the office today, I had to go back to the base of my Mafia Thunder due to an emergency. I was supposed to check all the boxes properly before exporting them. Then, I had to make a strategic plan to make sure our boxes weren't stolen by our enemy.I freshened up and decided to lay on the bed for a while to take a nap before I had to go to the office again in a few hours. Maybe I would just skip it today. It wasn't like my attendance was mandatory.I felt more relaxed at the thought of not going to the office today. It had been so long that I had been able to relax. But as soon as I closed my eyes to sleep, Ember's beautiful smile appeared in my mind.My eyes jolted open at that instant, and I remembered the hangout with Ember. I was supposed to go to her favorite restaurant last night, and I didn't even text her once that I wouldn't be able to make it
Chapter 13: DisclosureEmber Corbin"Why are we in the graveyard at this time?" Lance asked me as I looked at the sky. The sun was going to set soon, and I loved watching the sunset."I am here to meet my mom, but I don't know about you," I responded. He shrugged his shoulders. We walked to my mom's tombstone."Ember, are you still angry at me?"I twitched my lips and answered, "I don't know. Maybe I am, maybe I'm not."Lance groaned, "I hate this feeling.""Feeling you get when you are with me?" I arched an eyebrow. He was taken aback by my question."I meant the feeling of not knowing whether I am forgiven or not," he corrected his words.I smiled and once we reached my mom's grave, we sat on the short trimmed grass nearby. We were silent for a while with me staring at the writings on my mom's headstone and Lance staring at my face, trying to gauge what I was thinking. After a few minutes, I started talking on my own, "You know, Lance, I saw my mother getting murdered in front of my
Chapter 30: Wedding BellsEmber Corbin"Ember!" I turned around to see Candy wearing a beautiful pastel-colored dress. She looked so happy while holding a bouquet of roses."You look so pretty!" she exclaimed and jumped at me in excitement. Luckily, I'd been working out these past few days, so I managed to catch her and return the hug. I had to thank Lance for forcing me to stay in shape even after the self-defense classes were over."I told you this gown will suit you better," she commented while checking me from head to toe.I was glad I listened to her as well. This gown was so magical. It was an off-shoulder dress, and the sleeves were attached to my arms, not on the dress. This long mermaid gown had these cute details on the tail.
Chapter 29: Love and RomanceEmber Corbin"Lance?"I got nervous as Lance remained silent for a few minutes while gawking at me like he couldn't believe it was true. It was almost adorable in a way, but I didn't have the patience to admire his handsome face after waiting hours for him on this chilly terrace; I was sure I was going to catch a cold afterward, but that wasn't what was important at the moment. I had been so worried about him."Say something, will you?"Lance finally snapped out of his trance and asked, "Um, I... I don't get this. Why?"I sighed fondly and walked up to him, taking his hand in mine. "Because I forgive you.""Exactly. W-why?"
Chapter 28: AcceptanceEmber CorbinI had been trying to talk to Lance since his father came by, but I just couldn't find the right timing since he wasn't looking at me at all. There was this time when Lance made me a cup of coffee, I was about to call him out, but he just quickly walked outside, pretending not to hear me."Lance has been looking after us ever since we started riding. How come you're still not melting?" Maria teased me when we were riding a speedboat in the ocean. Despite the season being cold, it was sunny enough for a boat ride.I smiled at her and looked in Lance's direction over my shoulder and caught him staring at me. I smiled at him faintly, but I doubt he saw that since he averted his gaze at the very moment, I looked at him. That was what I was talking about. He was
Chapter 27: Breaking DownEmber Corbin"The patient needs a lot of rest. If it's possible, you need to lessen her stress," the doctor said in English, his Spanish accent visible in it."Gracias, Doctor," a guy named Matías said with a perfect accent.I was in Spain right now. Lance brought me here. Did he think that bringing me here would help me forgive him? All his efforts are going to go to waste."I'm going to let my wife know that you're eating here," Matías said and smiled at me. I didn't want to be rude, so I nodded at him. When the door closed, only Lance and I were left in the big room. It was so quiet that I could literally hear the busy street downstairs. It was New Year's Eve,
Chapter 26: Death Over HimLance Storm"Doctor! Where's the fucking doctor?" I hollered.Arthur and Denver were with me while I was carrying Ember's limp body in my arms."What happened? Who is creating a ruckus?” A female doctor came out and immediately gasped as she saw the bloodied woman in my arms. “Let me see the patient." As she approached us, she was so shocked when she saw Ember's condition that she just stared for a few seconds, dumbfounded."What the fuck are you standing here like a goddamn statue for? Save her!"The female doctor took a step back in fear when I yelled at her. I was mad and anxious right now, and the last thing I needed was a doctor who was just going to stare at
Chapter 25: Torturous EmotionsEmber CorbinI tried to open my eyes, but all I could see was darkness around me with only one bulb hanging in front of me. It felt like I was kidnapped by Lance. The only difference was the back of my head was still hurting like hell and there was a sticky feeling on my nape as if there was dried blood there.I tried to speak until I noticed that there was something in my mouth. Argh!I slumped my shoulders in defeat, my head aching a lot. My eyes scanned the room one more time to see if I could see clearly this time, but all I could see was endless darkness, which made my heart throb fast in fear.I was running out of breath, and the tape on my m
Chapter 24: Painful TruthLance StormEight years ago, I remember a man who had a lot of debt right after I had moved to Vegas for university and to plant my roots in the gang. That man had been off-track ever since, not willing to return even a single penny. I was only eighteen, recently starting to take over Mafia Thunder. Meanwhile, Elian had asked our father for a couple more years to focus on studying before he wanted to join. However, our father taught us both the same ways to rule, so to punish that man, I had to do the same thing every mafia leader would....Eight Years Ago..."So, no one knows where he is?" I asked Arthur while checking the paper in front of me. "So that man has the guts to come and ask for money and then run awa
Chapter 23: Her VillainEmber Corbin"Don't you have a house?" I asked in confusion and looked at Lance, who was now enjoying sitting on the couch."I do, but you're not in there," he said, shrugging his shoulders off like it was not a big deal.I know we were in a relationship right now, but I still needed my privacy. I didn't get it. He had a big penthouse, yet he kept on insisting on staying here. Not that I was complaining, I quite enjoyed sleeping with him. But I mean, I couldn't even call Candy and fangirl about male hot celebrities shamelessly with Lance in the house."Why are you pouting while standing there?" he asked, glancing at me.I sighed deeply. "You're going home tonight," I said, cross
Chapter 22: The First DateEmber CorbinI woke up with the smell of coffee. I glanced beside me and found my bed to be empty. Lance decided to stay last night, and he kept on insisting on sleeping on my tiny couch. But I somehow convinced him to stay in the same bed with me, otherwise, I would chew his brain with my talking. We cuddled a lot. Nothing else happened, though."Lance?" I came out of my room, and there I saw Lance brewing coffee while making breakfast. I hope he was making one for me too."Hey, good morning." He immediately looked up at me and smiled. My heart fluttered. Who knew there would come a day when Lance would be smiling so freely around me?He walked to me as I started to say, "Good morning. The breakfast smells so great&mdas
