Kat POV
“It’s just down this alley,” Giulia gleamed as she took my hand, guiding me toward the costume shop she knew. Giulia had taken it upon herself to help me find the perfect dress for the fundraiser, and while I was grateful for her help, my sense of style was less dramatic than her own. I guess I was just overly used to wearing neutral colours, whereas Giulia always picked out the bold colours which looked amazing against her dark skin. “Are you sure we are going to find a dress classy enough for me to wear to the fundraiser?” I asked her, unable to keep the doubt from my voice as the costume shop came into view, a few gaudy dresses in the display window. Giulia smiled brightly and tugged me closer as I became more and more certain that I would likely walk out of the shop with a clown costume. “The owner is a friend of mine,” she said, emphasising the ‘friend’ part so that it left no doubt that the man was a client of hers. “I told him about you needing to find a dress and he said he has a few perfect options that you can borrow.” The owner met us at the door to his shop, a middle aged man whose bald spot shone as if it had been polished. “Come, come,” he said in a low voice as he ushered us inside. “Lenito has the perfect dress for you.” I was about to ask who Lenito was, when Giulia hugged him and exclaimed dramatically, “ah, Lenito. You are such a darling.” He blushed an ugly shade of crimson before he kissed her hand and led the way through the racks of costumes toward the back. Slowly, he picked up dress after dress and held them against me, a frown permanently on his face as he muttered critiques about every look. “Here, try these on,” he said, thrusting a few gowns at me before he left the room. I glanced around the cluttered mess before I caught sight of Giulia looking hopefully at me. So with an internal sigh, I put on the dresses one by one. Gulia made sure I knew what she felt about each dress as she called out, “too long” or “too revealing”. There was even a “you look like you’re eighty!” “Maybe we should just leave and I can go and find something to buy,” I moaned, already tired of having to play dress up. “There is still a few hours before the event tonight.” Giulia grunted and shook her head. She started rifling through the racks of garments, and a few minutes later I heard her squeal with delight. “I’ve found it. I have found the dress,” she bubbled enthusiastically as she motioned for me to put the dress on. It was gorgeous. The emerald green fabric shone with the tiny crystals which had been sewn into the fabric. The sweetheart neckline was classically simple but made the ruffled hem even more extravagant, and drew attention to the way it looked like sea foam when I walked. “Wow,” I heard myself whisper. There was a rustle behind us and I spun to find Lenito glaring angrily at me. “I didn’t give you this dress to try on,” he snapped, and Giulia quickly took his hand and dragged him away from me, probably to talk to him in private - or maybe to convince him in another way that he needed to lend me the dress. Whatever she did, I was grateful for as when they came back, he was in a much better mood and even handed me a black velvet mask to tie on my face. “The fundraiser is always a masquerade. Just make sure you don’t ruin this dress. It’s worth more than your life,” he declared dramatically. I smiled and thanked him as sweetly as I could with mere words, before Giulia and I took the dress and almost ran from the building. The rest of the afternoon was filled with waxing, plucking and grooming every inch of me until I somewhat resembled one of the high society women who would be attending the event. “You know what to do,” Mother said seriously as I appeared in her kitchen. “Franky will be acting as a waiter so whatever you manage to get your hands on, hand to him and he will sneak it out of the venue.” I nodded, more nervous than I had been the night I had snuck into the Viking’s hotel suite. Mother’s eyes narrowed as the light caught my pendant which hung around my neck. “Don’t you have something more glamorous than that old thing?” she asked, tapping on it with the tip of her knife. My hand flew up to it and I clutched it in my fist protectively, shaking my head. “No, I won’t take it off,” I replied firmly, still tormented by what I had experienced the last time I had taken it off. The screaming that had flooded my head had been enough of a deterrent for me to never take off the necklace I had worn for as long as I could remember. Mother’s face was filled with exasperation as she conceded, her eyes narrowing once again as she shot a warning in my direction. “Don’t fail me again, Kat.” The knife she flipped in the palm of her hand was enough to drive the message home, and I felt my throat tighten. I didn’t relax as the black vehicle drove me to the fundraiser, if anything I became more and more anxious as the Capatoline Museums came into view. People dressed glamorously strolled casually to the man collecting invitations, and I slipped easily into the throng. Mother had presented me with an invitation and the velvet mask covering my eyes obscured my appearance, but the fear of being turned away at the door still made nervous knots form in my stomach. “Invitation?” the man in the tuxedo said, his eyes on my hands as I fumbled with the piece of paper. He snorted softly as he noticed that I had crinkled the card slightly, but he took it and waved me inside, and I was finally able to let out the breath I had been holding. The function was spread out throughout the venue, and I spent some time admiring the stone statues and gold gilded vases before I got to work. Most of the attendees wore expensive items of jewellery - golden cufflinks, pearl bracelets, ornate brooches. The choices were endless. I set my eyes on a particular target, and made my move.Hello lovely readers, Thank you for joining me on this new adventure, I really hope that you will enjoy it. If you're new here, please be aware that this is the third book in the series (1st : My Mafia Master, 2nd: My Mafia Mate), however, this book can be read alone. Enzo POV“I really hate these fundraiser events,” I muttered to Eli as he passed me a drink which I accepted gratefully. Eli chuckled and joined me, pressing his back to the wall which I leaned against. “Would you rather have had your mother attend instead? Valenti would have loved to have attended.” I cringed at the thought. “My mother would have spent my entire budget within the first two minutes walking through the door. You know how gentle her heart is. The images of the children would have been all the motivation needed.”My mother was, in complete contrast to me, an utter angel. “Well, we’re here so we may as well have some fun,” Eli drawled. “I feel like screwing with some of these prissy bitches.” I chuckled as I watched him stride casually to a woman whose mask barely covered the look of disdain at being approached by someone who she felt was below her social standing. “Good luck,” I whispered into my glass as I took another sip of the alcohol. My eyes scanned the rest
Kat POVI could still feel his lips on mine as I undressed and laid the dress carefully over a chair in the corner of the bedroom. Careful not to wake the sleeping children, I crept to the bed and slid beneath the sheets. “Did you have a successful evening?” Giulia whispered to me in the darkness. I contemplated telling her about the Castello, but decided not to. As much as I trusted her, I didn’t really want her to tell Fabio. Chances were that her boyfriend would freak out and make a bigger deal out of it than what it was worth. “Yeah, I think I have got enough to make Mother happy,” I responded, my mind returning to the necklace which was still hidden in my boot. I lay awake for at least an hour, my mind wandering down dangerous paths until I finally fell asleep. I woke up much later than I usually did and had made up my mind. I was going to take the piece of necklace back to Castello. Only, when I fetched my boots from the cupboard and plunged my hand into the one I had hidd
Kat POV“What do you mean, it's gone?” Castello growled at me, his voice low and oozing danger while his face was filled with rage. I stepped backward, bumping into the back of a fancy settee in my efforts to get away from him. “I don't know! It was hidden when I left for the fundraiser, but this morning it was gone. And so was all the money I was going to use to buy my freedom,” I whispered, preparing for the worst possible reaction. A deep growl came from Castello’s direction and I felt cold fear wash over me. No man should be able to make that sound, and yet he almost certainly did. It reminded me of the stories about him - the Dark Prince who prowls around at night, more beast than man. And for the first time since I had heard those stories, did I think that there might be some truth behind them. “Are we just going to pretend that she doesn’t look like her?” Eli piped up as he returned with a bottle of water. “It doesn’t matter who she looks like. She isn’t her. She is human
Kat POVI sat outside the address Castello had given me for hours after the sun had set, waiting for the man and his wife to finally go to bed so that I could break into the house. “Come on,” I groaned, looking at the watch on my wrist. “It’s almost midnight! So much for old people going to bed early.”I twisted my necklace around my finger, playing with the pendant - a nervous habit that I had picked up at some point in my life, I just couldn’t pinpoint when it would have been. Maybe from a time beyond what my memory allowed me access to. I had tried time and time again to remember something from before Giulia found me on the streets in Rome, a gash on the back of my head, blood matting my hair and staining my nightgown. Before that was a blank slate apart from a faint memory of a boy with white hair and eyes of a pale blue calling me as I laughed and ran away through the trees. “It’s not funny, Kat! You’re going to get us both in trouble,” he had shouted in my direction. That was
Kat POV“That’s the third letter delivered,” I announced as I entered Castello’s hotel room, heading straight to the settee and collapsing on it as if I was exhausted. Which I was. I had almost been caught this last time, and I practically ran half the way back to the hotel. Serves me right for pulling something like this off in broad daylight. “You’ve done well,” Enzo said as he came and sat beside me, a slight smile tugging on the corner of his lip. ‘Only four more to go.”I groaned and covered my eyes with my hands, peeking through my fingers when I heard his deep laughter.“It’s not funny,” I snapped at him, folding my arms. “This week I have been attacked by a tiny dog, a rose bush and a man dressed in just a towel. What next?” He tapped his chin thoughtfully, a glint in his eye which should have given away that he wasn’t going to answer my question seriously. “Maybe a car full of clowns.”I shuddered at the thought, “one clown and I am out, Castello. I might need your help, b
Kat POVI knew that I had to tell Giulia everything that had happened over the last two weeks, and I did exactly that. We sat together in the old, candle lit church, nestled in the corner where no one would bother us. The priest was ancient and half deaf, so not many people actually visited the church, making it the ideal spot for Giulia and I to talk without the fear of being overheard. “Why didn’t you tell me all of this sooner? I am sure we would have found you a way out of this hole without you digging an even deeper one,” she grumbled, rubbing her temples as if I had given her a headache with my story. I shrugged, “I didn’t want to make you worry - and I know how much I had lectured you about staying away from Fabio because he is a Castello, and now look.” Giulia laughed prettily. “And now you’re the one lusting after a Castello. Is he as disfigured as they say?” I shook my head and fought the blush which threatened to spill out onto my cheeks. “He’s got a scar across his eye
The second death was discovered the following day - the man had been found sitting in his car with a gun in his hand and a bullet in his brain. Franky had taken great pleasure in showing me the pictures and I immediately recognised him as the man who had run after me in just his towel after I had slipped the envelope under his bathroom door. My blood instantly ran cold and I had to fight the waves of nausea as I tore my eyes from the pictures. “Second lieutenant that Milano has lost in a week,” Franky said with a smile. “You know what that means?”I didn’t answer immediately, so he continued on with his explanation without even bothering to wait for me.“It means that new lieutenants will take their places, and that there will be space for more soldiers. I might finally have a chance!” He sounded so darned excited that I didn't have the heart to douse his enthusiasm with my complete horror at the gruesome images of death. Nor did I have the heart to disillusion him about being a so
Enzo POVThat woman was going to be the death of me. As much as I wanted to keep her at arm’s length, I felt drawn to her like a moth to a flame. And it was only a matter of time before she would burn me. I had been seconds away from kissing her once again. Seconds away from taking her in my arms and claiming her as my own in every way. Hell, I had even considered marking her and making her my mate, but there was no guarantee that a human would survive in my world. “She might look like the princess, but she’s not,” Elijah had firmly reminded me when I had told him about my urges. “You’re just projecting your feelings onto her because of the resemblance.” But I wasn’t. I didn’t like her because of who she looked like, I liked her because of her witty comebacks and the way she melted in my arms whenever I held her, as if she were made to be there. I listened carefully for the door to open and close as Kat left the hotel room, and only then did I let out the sigh I had held back as I
Kat POVWaking up to Jurgen standing in the kitchen sipping a cup of coffee was certainly not what I had expected when I stepped out of the bedroom.“Jurgen!” I squeaked, pulling my dressing gown tighter around me to cover the fact that I was naked beneath it. He bowed his head slightly, but the faint blush on his cheeks told me that he had seen more than I had hoped he would. “Good morning, my Princess,” he said, turning to place his mug on the kitchen counter. “I hope you slept well.” “Very well, thank you,” I responded and glanced around the small home. “Where is Enzo?” Jurgen smiled slightly and nodded his head toward the door. “He’s out on the training fields. He has realised how unfit incarceration has made him, so he decided to put in a few extra hours into his training.” “Oh,” I replied, still trying to figure out what on earth Jurgen was doing in my kitchen at 7 o’clock in the morning. “I hope you’re already packed,” he said casually, and I blinked a few times as I trie
Enzo POVI bolted upright in bed, beads of sweat trickling down my forehead and my breathing harsh as my heart beat loudly against my chest. “It was a dream,” I whispered to myself, a vain attempt to convince myself that I hadn’t witnessed the secret meeting between Anka and the last person on earth I would have suspected to be in collaboration with the Council, and yet my eyes could not have deceived me. The warm hand which brushed against my back almost sent me bolting for the door, but Kat’s scent wafted toward me and I remembered where I was and who I was with. “Are you alright?” she asked sleepily as she sat up and wrapped her hand around my arm, kissing my shoulder gently. I nodded, stroking the back of my hand down her soft cheek. “It was just a bad dream,” I told her. “Go back to sleep.” She yawned as she grabbed her pillow and hugged it as she lay back down again, falling asleep almost as soon as her eyes closed. I watched her for a few moments, a strange sense that the
Enzo POVI sat on the sofa and stared at the glass of whiskey in my hand, watching the way the fading sun turned the amber liquid into fire. Soon, it would be time to go to sleep - and then the nightmares would start. It was always the same; me tied up and struggling to break free, blood dripping from my chafed wrists as men with hoods covering their faces took turns abusing Kat. When they had first started I hadn’t even known her, she was merely Princess Katerina, the woman I knew was my mate just by the connection I had felt through a computer screen. But now, she was my Kat, and the emotions which surged through me each time her screams rang out were what kept me awake. “There you are,” Kat grinned as she made herself comfortable on my lap. “I thought you might have slipped out for a run by yourself. I know I hold you back.” I chuckled and tucked a strand of her golden hair behind her ear. “Yes, you do,” I admitted with a wink, “but I still prefer running with you than running al
Kat POV“What’s wrong?” Enzo asked, taking my hand and guiding me to the empty chair before standing behind it. Everyone seemed to ignore his question; Eliana fiddling with the fold in her skirt, Luca preoccupied with something outside the window, Jurgen - who I was surprised to see in Vasilios’s home in the first place - was drinking some sort of fruit juice from one of Cassie’s ‘I heart NY’ tumblers, while Vasilios and Cassie seemed to be having a staring competition.Apparently the pair were actually having a silent argument as Cassie threw her hands in the air and sighed dramatically before she turned in her chair to face us. “Elle and I went to town today to get some party stuff for Theo’s birthday,” she paused, a strange expression flitting across her face before she continued. “We saw Damian there, and something is definitely not right with him. He completely forgot Theo and thought I had a daughter.” “That’s really strange,” Enzo agreed, and I could feel the tension through
Cassie POV“We’re not going to be long, I just have to get the party things and then will be right back,” I told Enota, the teenager who babysat Theo whenever I was desperate. “Are you sure you’ll manage with the two of them?” I looked from my tiny terror, who sat in the living room gnawing on the coffee table while Gianna, Elle’s sassy four year old, sat on the other side with her crayons and a colouring book. Enota laughed and patted my arm in a way which bordered on condescending. “You do know I’ve done this before, right?” Of course she had. She had been a life saver the night of Enzo’s trial. “Call me if there are any problems and we’ll come right back,” I said again, bending down to kiss the top of Theo’s head. Gia waved to me as she coloured in sweetly, an absolute angel - or so she seemed. I secretly would bet all I owned that she would manipulate Enota into doing something her mother refused to let her do. “All set?” Elle asked as she walked toward Gia for a goodbye hu
Kat POVI shivered as frigid tendrils wrapped themselves around my body, clinging to my skin. It took me a few moments to realise that I wasn’t dead, although the memory of the pain that I had endured was still at the forefront of my mind. Groaning, I forced myself to sit up as the cool wind seemed to seep into my damp pyjamas. I had no clue how I had got to the tiny island in the middle of the lake, but there I was, thankfully alive. “Of course you’re alive, silly,” I heard a voice and I jumped, looking around me. “Did you really think I would let you die in the place we first met?” Staggering slightly, I managed to stand even though my limbs felt as if they were on fire. I looked about, realising that the night didn’t seem as dark as it had been when I left Enzo’s house. “Hello? Who is there?” I called out, steeling myself for some old hag to jump from what seemed to be ruins… or maybe it was just a pile of rocks. But instead, laughter as clear as day echoed in my head. “Oh, yo
Kat POVIt was as though the darkness had awakened something in me, images flashing through my mind - horrible images which made me yearn for the darkness once again. Only, the darkness didn’t return and I was forced to painfully watch the images with no escape until it suddenly clicked in my mind that they weren’t just images, they were memories. Two men dragged my body as I pretended to be unconscious - at least if they thought I was unconscious they wouldn’t hurt me again. I was grateful for Aurora who took most of the pain into herself, but I could tell that the wolf was weakening and I didn’t know how much more she could take. “I thought she was meant to be stronger than the rest,” the one man snorted, his British accent standing out in my mind. “Castle said she was special, but I guess he didn’t mean stronger. He’s going to be disappointed though. He was hoping to have some fun with her when he gets here, but at this rate there won’t be much left,” the second man laughed, a f
Kat POVI stood in front of the mirror in Enzo’s bedroom and stared at the reflection illuminated by the pale moonlight which poured in through the open windows. I had thought that being marked would be something magical - fireworks and butterflies all rolled up into one. I had expected to be instantly reunited with Aurora as Enzo and my souls became linked. None of that happened.I turned slightly, inspecting the red mark on my shoulder which would soon fade to a muted silver. It had hurt when Enzo’s teeth pierced my skin, and Aurora’s howl filled the air before her ears pricked up and she darted through the courtyard, past the guards at the main gate and into the forest. “What’s wrong?” Enzo asked, coming up behind me and wrapping his arms around me. “I could feel your pain from outside.” He ran his fingertips against the mark, and sparks of electricity ran through my body at his touch while at the same time, the burning heat from the mark instantly cooled. “I’m not sure,” I said
Kat POVThe flash of pale fur crashed into the executioner who stumbled backward, dropping the heavy broadsword as he struggled to keep his balance. And then, absolute chaos ensued. Some of the young members of the Council leapt to their feet and I heard a chorus of swearing and curses from their lips as they realised what was happening. “Get the sword, you fucking idiot!” I heard one of them shout at the rather stunned executioner who fumbled for a moment before he found and picked up the broadsword, gripping it as if his life depended on it. Aurora stood between Enzo and the executioner, her teeth bared as she growled menacingly at the man. There was no doubt in anyone’s minds that the wolf would fight to the death to save her mate - just like I should have instead of going along meekly. Guilt pulsed through my veins and before I knew what I was doing, I was on the platform beside her, a wordless threat. If he wanted to get to Enzo, he would have to kill the heir to the monarchy
