Chapter 4
Cassie POVI swallowed hard as Damian Costa’s eyes seemed to pierce into my very soul. If I didn’t know better, I would have sworn that this man was my mate. But no, I had a mate, and the feeling I felt when the mate bond between Vasilios and myself had been revealed still reverberated in my soul. I was just undeniably attracted to my new boss.“I would like to thank you all for such a warm welcome,” he said, his voice rough and deep. “It will take me some time to get to know everyone’s names, so please bear with me.”One by one, Boss introduced all fifteen employees to him. By the time he reached employee number ten, I was pretty sure Mr. Costa had zoned out.“Greg, he's one of the bouncers but is also the general handyman around here. Jessie, she's a bartender, and so is Cassie.”Costa’s lips twitched slightly at the mention of our names, before his gaze swept across his new employees. “Mr. Maretti has kindly taken up my offer and will continue to manage this club. I will make changes as and where I feel is necessary, but in all regards, you report to him.”There was a chorus of “yes, sir” before we were dismissed and went our separate ways.“So dreamy,” Jessie sighed as she leaned against the bar and shot glances at Costa.“He's probably married, or gay,” Greg grumbled as he placed a case of vodka on the bar beside me.“Or so vain that he can't carry out a relationship with anyone beside his bathroom mirror,” I added with a laugh, unpacking the case.Greg chuckled and shook his head, “who needs a mirror when any shiny surface will do?”Jessie let out a huff and pouted slightly, “you guys are mean.”Greg and I looked at each other and rolled our eyes before we heard Boss clap his hands and announce that it was five minutes to “showtime”.“Check you later,” Greg said, putting out his fist for me to fistbump as he moved to his place with the other bouncer on duty. The club quickly filled up, although it definitely wasn't as busy as the night before. There was a rowdy bachelorette party in one of the private booths, and a pair of twins who were celebrating their twenty second birthday, but other than that, there wasn't anything overly crazy.I'd just passed a tray to one of the hostesses to take to the bachelorette table when Boss came up to the bar. “Cassie, one bottle of whiskey, two glasses with ice, in my office,” came the order and I immediately complied.I grabbed a full bottle of whiskey from the rack below the counter and set it on the tray along with the tumblers and the mini bucket with ice. With everything I needed on the tray, I made my way up the stairs to the office which overlooked the entire club, expecting to find the Boss waiting for me.The door was open, so I didn't bother knocking. Mr. Costa stood at the floor length glass window and looked out over the club, his eyes sweeping across the floor.“I have brought the drinks which were ordered, Mr. Costa,” I announced as I set down the tray on the coffee table which stood between the two sofas which faced each other.“Thank you, Cassie,” came his reply. “It is Cassie, isn't it?”I nodded, a bit taken aback that he had remembered my name. “Yes, sir,” I responded. He laughed darkly and shook his head, “call me Damian.” He stepped closer to me, sniffing in a way which would have been completely weird to humans. “What we have in common would probably cause all those people down there to have nightmares.”I couldn't help it. I giggled like a stupid preteen girl.“Yeah, I guess it would - although I'm only a hybrid.”He shrugged and picked up the bottle of whiskey, pouring a substantial amount into the glass before he lifted it to his lips with a smile. “That doesn't matter to me.”I found myself blushing before I made the stupid excuse that I had to get back to work, and practically ran from the room, passing a bewildered Boss on the stairs.Jessie was MIA when I got back to the bar, and one if the other bartenders said she was having a smoke break - code for hooking up with a guy in the back alley.Only, when she came back in she was looking a bit worried, her eyebrows knitted together as she chewed on the inside of her cheek.“What's wrong?” I asked, wiping the bar with a cloth.“I've just had the weirdest encounter,” Jessie replied, darting a glance toward the door which led out into the alley. “There was this pretty cute guy who said he wanted to chat with me, so I went out into the alley with him to… you know… chat.”She was quiet for a moment and chewed on the inside of her cheek again.“Well? What happened?” I urged, setting down my cloth and facing her.“He just wanted to talk.” I could tell by the confusion on her face that she hadn't expected the man to talk to her at all. “He asked me if I knew of a girl called Cassandra who might work here.”“So what did you tell him?” I asked quickly, feeling a knot form in my throat. She shrugged, “I said I didn't know of a Cassandra. I said we call you Cassie, but your real name is Cassidy-Louise, so it's no wonder why we call you by your nickname. He didn't say anything after that, not even a goodbye. He just left.”I breathed out slowly, trying to control my frazzled nerves. My hand shook slightly as I reached for an empty bottle, and I quickly dropped it to my side in an effort to keep Jessie from noticing my unease.“Was it the same hot guy from last night? The big guy?”She didn't hear the quiver in my voice as she shook her head and shrugged again, “No, it wasn't him. This guy had a sexy Italian accent… I think he said his name was Endo or Elso or something.”Enzo.If Luca's brother was here, it was pretty clear that I had been found. Vasilios knew that I worked at the nightclub, and it was only a matter of time before he would come for me.Cassie POVAfter dropping a third bottle of shooters, Boss came down from the office and told me to go home, claiming that the club wasn't busy enough for four bartenders on shift. I knew he was probably just scared that I was going to drop another bottle - there would be no salary left to dock for the damages if I continued. Not bothering to change back into my jeans and t-shirt, I left through the staff exit and walked steadily toward my bike, noticing the few clubbers still loitering in the car park, smoking fuck knows what. I climbed on my bike cautiously, my miniskirt luckily just long enough not to ride up. My leather jacket also helped keep my modesty, although I did question if I should go back and change. But Vasilios could be in the club, and that thought alone dissuaded me. I put my helmet on, my eyes scanning the car park for any signs of Vasilios or Enzo, but there was none. My bike roared to life, chasing away the anxiety which clawed at my throat. It was one of the
Cassie POV Vasilios's words sent a shockwave through my body, part of me wanting to fall into his arms and apologise for ever running away. But the bigger part of me wanted to reach out and slap him. I'd lived in fear of him finding me for almost three years, and he managed to just waltz back into my life as if nothing had happened between us.“Do you not understand me?” Vasilios said slowly as he glared at the death grip the woman had on my wrist, “I told you to take your hands off of my wife.”She let me go as if touching me had burned her, the blood draining from her face in fear. “I'm so sorry, Mr. Kythira. I was unaware that Mrs. Kythira was joining you.” “Don't call me that,” the words shot out of my mouth before I could stop them, causing an unsure look to flash across the woman's face - and I was forced to add to my words. “Mrs. Kythira is my mother in law. I've never grown used to that title.” The woman's face pulled up into a sorry excuse for a smile before she apologise
Vasilios POVThe last place I expected to find Cassandra was in New York. For as long as I could remember, she had hated big cities, saying that they made her feel claustrophobic. So I guess that's why I put it on the lowest point on the list of potential places she could have gone. In fact, up until a year ago, I was convinced that she was just enjoying spending her time torturing me while she lay on some tropical island being fanned with giant palm fronds and fed grapes by a couple of shirtless hunks. And then Luca overheard a conversation between his mate, Eliana, and Cassandra. They had been best friends ever since they had been thrown together in the same apartment while in university, and made a rather unlikely friendship. They became inseparable, and even though I knew that Eliana knew where Cassandra had gone, there was no way of prying my mate’s location from the stubborn woman’s lips. So when Luca had overheard Eliana speaking to Cassandra on the phone about life in the big
Cassie POVI drove home like a mad woman, weaving in between cars and avoiding pedestrians - although I can honestly say that it was all a subconscious effort. My mind was fixed on the man I'd left behind at the hotel. That stupid, self centred son of a bitch! No, that wasn't quite right - his mother wasn't a bitch. I liked Vasilios's mother. She was a dear woman who was as much a mother to me as she was to her own son. The dark mood which had struck me the moment Vasilios's presence was known, followed me into my apartment building. I stomped up the stairs, swearing in every language I knew as I made my way to my apartment. I stopped outside my door and started fumbling in my backpack for my keys, still swearing under my breath. “Of course, I should have known,” I heard behind me, the haughty tones of derision evident in the woman's words. Slowly, I stood back up and tried to steel myself against the confrontation I knew was coming. “Anna,” I smiled sweetly, “I wasn't aware tha
Cassie POVI didn't sleep. I couldn't sleep knowing that a guy who only knew me as Crystal the stripper suddenly showed up outside of my apartment building. By 2am, I gave up trying and started watching movies instead. Feeling nostalgic, I put on Greece and was flooded by the memories of the last time I had watched it - and how my drinking game with Eliana ended in one of the most embarrassing moments of my life. With Vasilios spanking my naked backside before tucking me into bed and telling me to be a good girl and go to sleep. Arg! Fucking Vasilios! I switched over to some other random movie, something where people were being killed by a crazy clown. At least that didn't remind me of anything - although I'm probably not going near any circuses for a while. At some point I fell asleep, only to be woken by a banging on my door. Groggily, I peeped through the peephole to see the glorious red curls which could only belong to one person. “Oh no, did you forget?” Amy asked, pushing pa
Cassie POV“Hey Cass, Boss wants to see you,” Greg said the moment I walked through the door of the nightclub on Wednesday evening. I sighed inwardly and made a beeline for his office, climbing the stairs two at a time. “Cassie, come in and close the door,” I heard Boss's booming voice as I approached the office.I silently obeyed and closed the door behind me with a click. “What's up, Boss?” He looked a bit pained as he sat back in his chair. “Tell me, are you alright?” I was a bit taken aback. Boss wasn't exactly the most insightful individual I'd ever met and he usually just told people to keep their private life outside the doors of his club. “Yeah, I'm fine,” I said slowly. “If it's about the bottles of shooters that I dropped, I promise I will pay for them.”“Oh, no no no. It's got nothing to do with that, but damned right you'll pay for them,” he replied, his New Jersey accent thickening as he spoke. “It's just that a man was looking for you here last night. One of the guy
Cassie POV“Jessie!” I practically shouted, frustrated that the woman was obviously so busy with some guy that she didn't even hear me calling her name. I heard a rustling sound behind me and spun around to see Boss, his face partly obscured in the darkness.“Cassie? Aren't you meant to be attending to Mr. Costa's party?” he asked as he stepped closer.I don't know why I did it, but I stepped backward as if to get away from him. “Yeah, he asked me to get him a bottle of brandy and I forgot to ask which one he liked. I don't want to look like an idiot so I wanted to ask Jessie if she knew,” I embellished the truth slightly. “The guys said she came out here for a quick smoke, but I can't see her.”Boss shrugged and pulled out a box of cigarettes, putting one in his mouth before he lit it and crumpled up the now empty box. “Costa drinks d'Usse cognac,” he replied, taking a drag of his cigarette before he threw the empty box at the open dumpster. He missed miserably and it bounced off
Cassie POV“Hey, can I give you a lift home?” Damian asked once he had cleared the club and asked the bouncers to guard the alley until the police team could collect evidence. I shook my head, “can't leave my bike here. I have my second job to get to tomorrow.”He looked at me quizzically but didn't ask further… and I wasn't going to volunteer the information. “Alright, then I'm going to follow you home to make sure you get there alright,” he announced, taking my backpack from me as we left the club. His hand rested on the small of my back and I could feel the intense heat of his palm through my shirt. It's something werewolves don't really notice, but their body temperature is definitely warmer than humans - great in Winter, but it must be awful to sleep next to one in the Summer. “Fine, you can follow me home,” I agreed somewhat begrudgingly. He smiled triumphantly and I pretended not to notice as he helped me put my jacket and backpack on. As my bike roared to life, Damian jum
Chapter 2Kat POVI pressed my ear to the door of the suite on the third floor of the Palazzo Hotel, hearing the steady breathing of the occupant inside. He must be fast asleep - just how I wanted him.“This should be easy,” I whispered to myself as I pulled the lock picks from where I had hidden them in my hair. The hotel had been deserted as I had made my way through the foyer and hallways, as it should be at 3am. Only a sleepy looking desk clerk had possibly seen me, but I think the man was too busy scrolling through reels on his phone to even realise that I had snuck in.Not exactly the kind of service you would expect to find at a five star hotel, but I was glad for it. Within a few seconds, I had the door unlocked. With a slightly proud smile, I slipped off my shoes and pushed the door quietly open before I snuck inside. The room was lavishly decorated and my bare feet sunk into the thick carpet. Exquisite paintings hung on almost every wall and I had to stop myself from pullin
Chapter 1Kat POVI was drowning. The water flooded my lungs as I tried to scream, my clothing dragging me down into the dark depths as shadows hovered above the water. Bright lights flashed across my vision like fireworks as my lungs burned, and then it all went black.“Wake up, Kat, it’s just a nightmare.” I felt a hand press against my mouth and my arms flew out to ward off my attacker. “Stop screaming before you wake up the others!”Giulia’s face was barely visible in the dark room, her warm brown eyes filled with sisterly concern.I nodded my head and she removed her hand, brushing my hair from my face just like a real big sister would do. “Was it the same nightmare again?” she whispered, careful not to wake up the four children who slept on mattresses on the floor.“Yeah,” I whispered back, shivering as the cool night air cut through my pyjamas which were drenched with my own sweat. Giulia tugged the thin blanket up under my chin, looking after me just as she had done ever sin
Cassie POVI stood watching the ceremony with tears in my eyes as Aleko took over the Alpha title amidst cheers from the pack. Once the shock of Vasilios stepping down had worn off, the elders of the pack were elated to have Aleko back again. The giant man had begun helping with training the younger wolves, and had even gone as far as to redo the roof of one of the ancient widow’s homes that Vasilios and I hadn’t even known was leaking. All in all, he was far more suited to the role than Vasilios ever had been. And we had come to the conclusion that Vasilios had just wanted to be Alpha because that is what had been expected of him his whole life. Vasilios had formed a strong bond with Aleko in just a few short months, and the man had quickly become like a father figure to him. In fact, no one was surprised when we named our own son Niklos Aleko after his great uncle. The baby boy had launched himself into our lives a month early, but according to Luna Delia it was probably a good th
Cassie POV“I wonder why Damian is being so secretive about who he wants us to meet,” I mused aloud as we drove to Damian’s house. Vaslios was driving at a snail’s pace, and I had to resist the urge to take over. The man had been driving me insane over the last few days with how over protective he was being - “No Cassandra, you can’t lift that. You’ll hurt yourself.”, “No agapití mou gynaíka. You shouldn’t be straining yourself. You need to rest.”I was seconds away from murdering the man. I guess it was cute that he was trying to protect me, but I was made of tougher stuff and I didn’t feel like being imprisoned in my own apartment because the man thought the stairs were too dangerous. “I guess it won’t matter since I will die of old age before we get there,” I muttered under my breath. Vasilios snorted and rolled his eyes before he increased the speed by a fraction. Luckily we weren’t far from Damian’s house and as we drove up the driveway we could see another car parked. “Well
Vasilios POVI watched the screen as the doctor slid what looked like a product scanner across Cassandra’s stomach, not entirely sure what to expect. I’d always heard that foetuses look like little aliens, but to me it looked like perfection. “There’s the spine, and there you can see baby’s heart beating,” the doctor pointed out bodyparts on the screen which I could barely make out. It was a bit like those black blobs shrinks use to determine if you’re insane or not - only in this case I was trying to figure out my kid’s anatomy. My child. The thought was still so strange and yet so welcoming. “Are you wanting to know the gender?” the doctor asked. Before I could respond, Cassandra shook her head. “No. I want it to be a surprise.” As if having the kid in the first place wasn’t enough of a surprise, but I let her have her way. Either way the child was going to be loved beyond measure. If it was a girl, she would be my princess. I would treat her in a way that she would know what
Cassie POVVasilios and I collapsed onto the bed in the honeymoon suite of the hotel - the same one where I had lost my virginity to him. I chuckled when we had pulled up outside the Aman and he had shot me a strange look before he took my hand and guided me into the gigantic, minimalistic monstrosity. The honeymoon suite was on the top floor, and Vasilios lifted me into his arms and carried me through the door into the candle lit room, laying me gently on the petal covered bed before he collapsed beside me.Our wedding reception had been a blast, even with the very few guests attending. By the end of the night, Laryssa had pulled out a handy pair of scissors and had styled a fashionable knee-length dress out of my gown, and we had all danced to music played by Benny while Terry poured drinks into any glass that seemed slightly empty. The pair had celebrated my pregnancy and my nuptials in style, insisting that they be part of the celebration.Vasilios and I had been slightly surprise
Cassie POVIf someone ever tells you that you can’t organise a wedding in twenty-four hours, tell them that they’re wrong. By the time the sun rose the next morning, I was relaxing in my apartment with Elle and Laryssa, sipping mocktails and gushing about the gorgeous dress Laryssa had managed to get for me for an absolute steal. “So, Amy is on her way to pick up the bouquets we ordered and then she will come and dress here. Luca says the decor is already set up and that Damian’s chef friend is preparing what seems to be a twenty-course meal. We are all sorted,” Elle ticked off the to-do list on her fingers, smiling brightly. I took her and Laryssa’s hands and squeezed them slightly, “thank you for everything you have done for me. I really don’t think I could have pulled this off without you both.”Elle kissed my cheek and winked before she snuck off to call her mother-in-law so that she could check in with Gia - the kid was probably having the time of her life without her mother c
Cassie POVI’m pretty sure that the nurses held a party the moment I walked out of the hospital. Not because I was a terrible patient, but because Vasilios was probably the most non-compliant family member the ward had ever experienced. He refused to leave my side, and only my father was able to make him leave for an hour, although he complained about that too and made my dad stay while he was away. Vasilios broke all the hospital rules; climbing into bed beside me, reading my medical chart, getting food delivered because he said hospital food didn’t have enough nutrition to feed both me and his baby. The guy was overbearing to put it mildly. But I didn’t mind in the least. Vasilios drove carefully through the city, and we spoke about our wedding plans. I was determined to be able to have a relaxed ceremony with just our close friends and family, where we could actually say our vows and mean it. Yes, I know that we weren’t technically divorced, but this ceremony was going to be the
Cassie POVI felt as if I was burning alive, the fire clawing at my chest as restraints held me down. I tugged on the rope which seemed to be emerging from my own arm, but that only caused screaming from the depths of the dark cave I was locked in. “Someone, help!” I thought I heard Vasilios’s voice, but then a sharp pain radiated from my arm and my world went dark once again. It seemed like just a few moments later that I woke up again, the pain in my chest more of a dull throb than the fire it had been. The room was dimly lit, but my eyes seemed to take a while to adjust to the light as I slowly became aware of my surroundings. The clinical environment and the drip poking out of my arm seemed to be enough clues to point to the fact that I was in hospital. The highly flattering hospital gown and catheter removed all doubts that remained. I tried to sit up and groaned as the fire burned through my chest again, and I was forced to remember that I had been shot. The last thing I re
