The journal told a story.

Silvana tore pages out from different spots in the journal, then put them in order so that the story made sense.

With sharp breaths and the epic sound of thunder rattling the trees outside, Silvana read through the story hastily, hoping she might better understand what was happening, and what her father hadn't been telling her.

She traced her fingers over symbols etched into the journal's pages, and her father's handwriting glowed red, revealing all writing otherwise hidden by his sigils and seals.

Now, the sentences and scribblings were making sense.

"It all started twenty-one years ago," Silvana mumbled to herself as the house shook.

The quakes from the thunder and crimson lightning were so strong that the coffee pot shimmied off from the counter and shattered to the kitchen tile beside her.

She wiped a nervous hand at her face, trying to make sense of what her father had written. "Dad says that these same storms had taken over the city before,

The front door to the house and the back door to the kitchen both flew off their hinges, and Silvana tried to stand, but the conflagration of pain in her abdomen kept her on the ground. She winced and coughed as smoke and ash crept near her from both sides of the house, and she was attacked by two recognizable voices, one belonging to a man, and the other to a woman. "Get down!" Amelia and Bruce both shouted at one another from across the house. By the kitchen door and through the plumes of smoke from the fires outside, Bruce dove to the floor and beside Silvana, wrapping her up in his arms. A bolt of green energy flew above them and to where Bruce had been and collided into a frightening figure entering the house. The spirit of a man made from crimson lightning and holding a huge axe stumbled backwards a few steps, shaking off the green magical blast that had hit him.He regained his strength, then stepped through the hole and into the kitchen with lethal intent. Silvana's ey

Instead, Silvana focused on the spirit, her vision foggy, and thought, "Leave my best friend alone you heinous thing!" And just by thinking the thought, she felt her anger manifest through magic she didn't understand, and the hands of the spirit blew off in small purple explosions, then fizzled into sparks on the floor of the foyer. In complete astonishment, the spirit held its arms up to its face, and quivered as it realized it now only had stubs in place of its hands. Suddenly, Silvana felt better. It was as if the powerful magic had been building up inside her, and what she needed to do was trust in it and release it. With a groan, she stood onto a single knee, and as the spirit disregarded its damaged hands and went to kick Amelia while the woman was down, Silvana held a hand outright. She said, through gritted teeth, "Tu Fui, Ego Eris," and a blast of magic so strong she was knocked back emitted from her hand. The spirit with its foot over Amelia erupted into sparks of p

It didn't feel like they'd been driving for several hours but they had been. Everybody was catching their thoughts, their breaths, their attitude towards the power of the attacks against them. Would they be safe anywhere?Amelia seemed to think so. She leaned over from the backseat and said, "Okay, down this driveway."The car rattled down a secluded dirt road that was nearly a mile long until the trio found themselves at a cabin covered by crooked trees. The moon shimmered over the water of the large lake at the foot of the hill the cabin resided on, and it gave Silvana an uneasy feeling in her gut. "Isn't this the cabin Kurt got you?" Silvana asked, parking the car and killing the engine. "My brother got you a cabin?" Bruce asked, startled. "With what money?" Amelia looked at him, brushed her hair over her shoulder and responded, "Apparently he's got some side hustles. My first red flag."Bruce dragged his feet and stretched his big arms after being cooped up in the back

Slowly, the lights flicker, the showerhead spurts back to life, and Bruce and Silvana see a rustling in the pile of their clothes on the floor. Bruce and Silvana instinctively reach out to the other, making sure that they are both okay in the dark. Silvana glances at Bruce's eyes, and they have turned a rich silver, and he is curling his entire body around her, as if to shield her from anything that might be lurking. But what they find through the flittering lights of the bathroom is something far less sinister than what they had been prepared for. Bruce's pants rise off the tile of the bathroom floor, then float up towards the ceiling. "Are you seeing this?" Silvana asked with a furled brow. "Yeah," Bruce chuckles, "And I think I know why it's happening.""Well feel free to fill me in," Silvana remarked. Bruce ran out of the shower, hurriedly dried his feet on the mat, then pulled the floating pants out of the air and slipped himself into them. "I'll explain in a minute

"That's the same figure I saw before!" Amelia shouted, pointing a finger at the door."Why isn't your magic removing it off the property?" Silvana asked, joining Bruce's side and readying herself for a fight."The spell only repels werewolves," Amelia said. "So whatever that thing is out there, it's something we'll need to dispose of the old-fashioned way," Bruce said. His fingers extended out and into sharp silver claws. The doorbell rang again, and the figure poked its hooded head beside the window by the door. No features could be seen beneath its hood or robe, and it gave off a chilling vibe for the three to see a person hidden by clothing as dark as the night itself. "We shouldn't answer," Amelia said, taking a step back. Maybe Bruce and Silvana were up for another battle, but Amelia wasn't. Her arm and back and neck were sore, and all she wanted was to heed Solaris's advice and take an evening to relax. But no matter how much she hoped this problem went away on its own,

At the screeching sound emitting from Solaris's ring, Silvana awoke and slammed her hand down on the dresser as if catching a fly on the wall. She pressed the ring to her palm and felt a jolt shake any sleepiness out of her, and she sat up in the bed as Bruce and Amelia both woke, their eyes still heavy and bodies drooped in blankets. "I need your help sooner than I had thought," Solaris shouted. He was out of breath and sounded focused. "Get Bruce to the Silverclaw manor as soon as you are able," Solaris said. Silvana could tell that wherever her father was, he was moving quickly. "I've got one final shot to unite the werewolves and the witches, but I require the vote of the Silverclaw Alpha." "Unite?" Bruce asked to himself, recalling the torture Solaris had put him through. Had Solaris really turned such a new leaf? Bruce leaned in and said, "We're all on our way. Tell the pack I'm coming." Then the sound of thunder whipped so hard through the ring that it shocked Si

What happened next was like fireworks. Spirits clashed their electrified weapons against the hides of furious, howling werewolves, and witches too late to cast their combat spells fell in troves by the slashing and cutting and beating of the insidious spirits. With all their numbers combined between the species, they were no match for all the spirits flooding out of the manor, some floating on spectral dark clouds and others fully formed, human-looking monsters, all of whom irradiated with deadly sparks that zapped any werewolf or witch who had the misfortune to touch them. Silvana's heart thumped in her chest as the harrowing sounds of screaming and death surrounded her. She took a step closer to Bruce, took a deep breath as she assessed how the forces against them seemed neverending, and Silvana ground her feet as magic flowed through her. This was it, and no matter how uneven the battle was, she would win. Silvana charged before Bruce could, and Amelia hid behind Bruce. Br

"We have fended off the spirits for the time being," Solaris shouted at the large crowd. There were many injured, and some nursed their wounds and clutched their sides as their ears perked. Solaris stood proudly and declared, "But if we are to permanently defeat Cecilia Duponte and her hauntings, we must unite!" Silvana noticed the lines by her father's eyes were gone, as was the cane that he had required for walking up until recently. Bruce stood beside Solaris, tall and mighty, and although he was still in primal werewolf form, he spoke clearly and asked Solaris, "Do you have a plan for defeating Duponte?""What's the reason Solaris can't seal the spirits away like he did years ago?" a werewolf amongst the crowd interjected. She winced as a gash along her leg made her lose her balance. "Why must we continue to battle?""I do have a plan," Solaris said, answering Bruce's question. He turned to the wounded werewolf, "Though for it to work, I need everybody to understand tha

A cooling, tropical breeze blew the leaves of the palm trees overhead, and Silvana stuck her toes in the warm sand as the sun beat down on her. Waves slapped the shoreline several feet ahead of her, and she reclined into her comfy beach chair. "I can't tell you all how happy I am," she said, "to be away from the snow and the cold." She sipped from a giant margarita that had been put inside a hollowed-out coconut with a large pink straw. "I'll stick to the shade," the pale Angus said, hiding underneath the large, canopy-style leaves from the trees. He was working shirtless at a grill, spreading out lemon slices on top of freshly caught fish. "Oh my god," Amelia said, a cocktail shaker in her hands. "Can you imagine my big Angus with a tan?" Angus peppered some potato salad, laughed, and said, "You all enjoy the sun. I'm hot enough as is at the grill. Amelia pulled down her oversized purple sunglasses, observed Angus's tight rows of abs and murmured, "Hot is right."She gave

Months later, big bells of silver adorned with blue ribbons rang loudly in the newly refurbished Silverclaw mansion. The mansion was owned technically by the silverclaw kin, but it had become a retreat for vampire, werewolf, and witch alike, and certainly required the aid and unique talent of the three separate species to be rekindled to a state beyond its former glory. Down the winding aisles of mixed company and standing at what had once been a court podium but had since been remodeled into an altar, Bruce stood tall and handsome, his chest out, ready and waiting in a dapper black tuxedo with a black bow tie. His messy brown hair had been cut and trimmed, and his face was clean shaven. He stood with a large smile on his face, though truly he was starting to get worried. Bruce glanced at his silver-strapped watch, then looked out into the stone benches filled with people casually chatting. A firm, supportive hand pressed against the top of his back. "Quit checking that thing,

Solaris grabbed the vampire's wrist and stopped her sword from decapitating Duponte. "This woman," Solaris said very seriously, "Is not the same demon who has caused us all great strife." "You speak nonsense, old man!" the werewolf next to the vampire roared. His claws dripped with Duponte's blood, staining the snow at his hind legs red. "Just because you do not have the strength to finish her does not mean I won't.""Stand down," Bruce said with a chill to his voice. He and Silvana ran over. Silvana knelt and observed Duponte's wounds. "They're bad, but she'll live," she determined. "This woman here is my family," Solaris confirmed to the werewolf and vampire, who looked dubiously at one another. "Any ill intent has been removed from her because of these two talented," Solaris paused for a moment, then addressed both Silvana and Bruce as he said, "children of mine."Bruce smirked, as he'd finally gotten the approval of the father of the woman he loved. On the snowy floor,

Bruce reverted from his massive werewolf form and back into his regular human body. His waist was covered by only the fragments of torn jeans that remained from his transformation, and he and Silvana both smirked to one another, both privy to what needed to be done now that Duponte had revealed her true form, and as the demonic energy continued to corrupt her. "You'll never be strong enough to fight me like that," Duponte angrily hissed at Bruce. Her arms grew thin and long and skeletal. Lightning whipped all around her. "I don't plan on fighting you," Bruce replied calmly and in complete control. He took Silvana's hand. "Are you ready?" he asked her. "Always," Silvana said with a smile that confused and angered Duponte. How were these two so calm in the face of her? It infuriated Duponte, and she unleashed a fierce, howling wheeze. But the truth was, Silvana and Bruce were privy to secrets that Cecilia Duponte were unaware of. It had all been inside of Solaris's journal, w

"Don't you see," Duponte said to Silvana with outraised, welcoming arms, "That I'm not your enemy."Duponte pointed to the goopy mess that was the remains of Kurt. "He, now he, was your enemy. He wanted nothing more but your blood and your father's blood."Getting even closer, Duponte pounded a palm to her chest and continued, "I, your family, want you to thrive." Silvana breathed deeply at the sight of the horrible fate that had befallen Kurt. Her heart was heavy with guilt, and for all the troubles that Kurt's mischief and sin had caused her, she still felt a sense of regret that she was not able to save him when he was in a state of delusion and pain. She stepped away from a small collection of bright orange sludge oozing towards her. Kurt hadn't been a good or decent man, but he didn't exactly deserve this. "Don't feel sympathy for this beast," Duponte said, as if reading Silvana's mind, or perhaps her crestfallen face. "Feel sympathy for your mother, for her sacrifice. For

Though Kurt's roars were strong enough to topple over trees still standing in the forest, Silvana and Duponte both stood their ground as the beast hollered. The rest of those still alive, Solaris, Angus, Amelia, and Bruce were all left frozen by Duponte's unwavering magic. Orange sludge dripped down from the blistering welts lacing Kurt's silver and black furred hide. His once amber eyes flared with the same bright, unhealthy orange. "What the hell happened to him?" Silvana asked. Duponte looked at Kurt with absolute and unequivocal disgust. She said, "He's tried, rather unsuccessfully, to enhance himself with the blood of a witch."With a tilt of her head and sniff from her nose, Duponte inspected Kurt. "Our blood, Silvana, no less, is what he's taken" she sneered. "From your father. And look at what it's done to the mongrel." Kurt howled with a raspy, unearthly voice, and driblets of orange saliva flew from his infected and rotting fangs, leaving behind acidic and flaming

Duponte walked forward leaving fiery steps behind her. A curtain of black and red lightning crackled around her skin, and her smile was both wicked and wide, as if all of Silvana's efforts were nothing more but mere entertainment. Silvana, though, could barely move; she tried to bring herself from her knee to no avail, and with one eye shut and the other squinted, she hazily watched as Duponte smacked away Bruce and Amelia, sending the two barreling into the forest. As much as she wanted to retaliate, Silvana was depleted of energy, and sealing the spirits away had drained her of any remaining magic. Duponte clutched Silvana's face with a single hand, and Silvana felt a burning that was completely unique and unlike anything she ever experienced. The pain was not like when she burned her hands ripping the bindings off of Bruce's arms when he was in her father's basement, but the burning caused by Duponte's touch was raw, unnerving, and rattled her from head to toe. Duponte glared

A flurry of crimson lightning slammed into the blue sigil left behind by Solaris and the witches, fracturing the very ground itself. Solaris reached out a hand to his daughter and shouted, "Silvana!" But it was too late. Silvana was struck with a bolt of lightning before Bruce or Amelia could do anything to stop it. Her body flew into a tree that splintered into sawdust from the impact. "No!" Bruce yelled, running over. Cecilia Duponte's laughter could be heard taunting them from the reddened skies. Bruce charged over to where Silvana had landed but was stopped by the bursting of the witches' sigil. Blue sparks surrounded him though not as fast as the hundreds of hands belonging to the once-sealed spirits. They dragged him into the dark abyss as he thrashed and roared. Solaris did what he could to repel the forces, though in truth it was little. His magic couldn't protect everybody, and spirits twice as strong and large as before, bigger than the tallest trees in the fo

The forces all paused outside of The Forest of the Damned, taking in the thick air that smelled rotten. Most of the trees were dead, black and gray husks ready to teeter over at the next sharp wind, and the few large pines that stood firmly had branches that drooped like wilting flowers, as if the very bark had been poisoned. Lightning roared above the mess of long-dead trees, but it wasn't anything new to Bruce and Silvana, who had been fighting these evils since they had returned. What hit them both differently, though, was that ghastly, heavy air, and with each breath they took it was like swallowing toxins. Everybody felt it, from the witches to the werewolves to the vampires. It was a smell of sour blood that tainted the very grass beneath the snow they all stepped on. Angus held a hand before his mouth and tried not to cough in front of Amelia for fear of seeming weak, but as he plugged his nose, she turned away and hacked into her folded elbow. Even Solaris struggled t
