"So what do we have here?" I asked as I picked up the first file. Coincidentally, the first person in line was the same man I met in the elevator. "Stav Trajano." I gritted under my breath.
"He is the son of Christopher Trajano. Hiring him will be the best decision." Aero told me. Aero Cruz was the man who taught me everything about this business after my father died. He was the only person I listened to, but what he was saying right now was against my ethics.
"I am not giving this job to anyone just because their father owns a multinational company. This will be solely on merit." I commented.
"But Alice, he called us this morning to grant his son some relaxation. It will give our bad image if we don't listen to him." Aero argued.
"He called?" I lifted my eyebrow. I hated people like these, who depend on their parents and other people to help them succeed, instead of making it happen on their own. Making up my mind to show him his place, I said, "Let's meet Mr. Trajano then, shall we?"
Saying this, I called for the first interviewee and rested back against my seat. picking up his file, I assessed his qualifications. For someone who needs his father to secure him a job, he had an impressive resume.
I was busy assessing his resume when the door opened and someone said in a loud voice, "Fuck."
Lifting my head, I watched Stav Trajano staring at me as if he had seen a ghost. A smirk appeared on my lips as I responded, "Fuck indeed, Mr. Trajano.”
His face paled all of sudden and drops of sweat appeared on his forehead. Under my calculative gaze, he reached the desk and sat down in front of me. By the look on his face, he would rather be in hell than being here in this room.
"So Mr. Trajano, give me a reason why I should hire you." I asked, leaning back in my seat.
He put a mask of confidence on his face but I was experienced enough to see right through it. "I am ambitious, hardworking, competitive and..."
"What else?" I asked.
"I have an excellent academic record---"
"So do the rest of candidates." I said sharply.
"I am quick in actions, decisive and..."
"Tell me something you didn't pick off Wikihow?" I said and another layer of sweat appeared on his face.
"I... Um..."
"Quick. I don't have all day." I said.
He took a deep breath, realizing I wasn't going to let him off the hook that easily. Clearing his throat, he said, "I don't know what to tell you but I do know that I am the best person for this job. I will never let you down and you will be lucky to..."
"Lucky? You think we will be lucky to have you work with us?" I asked and he nodded, his Adam's apple moved up and down.
"I think..."
"You have the nerve to call me a Monster, a Mean Queen, Satan and what was the fourth word if I may ask?" I asked.
"L... Lady Hitler." He said and both men sitting beside me gasped.
"Ah, yes. And you had the nerve to ask your father to put in recommendation for you. You Mr. Trajano are a stupid, insubordinate brat and you think we will be lucky to have you?!" My voice was rising with every second.
"I... I..."
"Get out!" I shouted and his face flushed.
"Alice, calm down." Aero whispered in my ears.
"I said, get out!" I yelled at him once again.
Without wasting another second, he stood up and walked towards the door. But once he reached it, he turned around and walked back to us. "You know what? I am not leaving. What I did in the elevator was wrong but what my father did wasn't my fault. I didn't even know he had put in a recommendation. So I think I deserve a chance to at least finish this interview, like every other person here." He said all in one breath.
He kept staring at me, ignoring the other two people in this room. For a moment, an awkward silence prevailed in the conference room that was finally broken by me. "Fine. Have a seat." I said.
He sat down once again. His green eyes pierced into mine and for a very brief moment, I felt overwhelmed which was not something that happened to me anymore. "I am ready." He said.
"Do you have any previous work experience?" I asked, ignoring everything I had already studied in his file.
"I did two four-month internships in some local companies after high school. Then in third year, I worked as assistant of the finance manager and Co for three months. In fourth year, I did an internship in Bolivia, and after graduation, I did an observership in our company," he replied confidently.
One by one, I asked different questions and he answered each of those questions effortlessly. I tried to find anything I could use to humiliate him but he didn't give me any chance, which the people who know me know isn't an easy task.
"You can leave. We shall contact you if you get the job." I said in the end.
"Okay. Thanks for giving me another chance." He said and extended his hand for a shake. When I kept glaring at him without moving, he shrugged and left the room.
"You have to admit, the kid has guts." Aero commented.
"A little too much for his own good." I said and called the next person.
•••••••••••
"So which one is it going to be?" Aero asked, spreading all the files in front of me. It was about 9 in the evening and I had to make the decision before leaving the office building.
"I don't know. This new batch just redefined the word disappointment." I said after taking a long sigh.
"What about the Ateneo graduate?" Aero asked.
"Him? He couldn't even pronounce his own name right." I commented.
"What about that redhead?" He asked.
"Oh please. I don't want a blushing mess to work for me." I threw the file into the garbage can.
"What about this one?" He showed me the file.
"Really Aero? Do I look like I have time to deal with a walking talking inferiority complex?" I said and threw another file in the garbage can.
"This one?" He showed me the second last file.
"Pass. Her name is Cupcake. Seriously? Who names their kid Cupcake?" I said, rolling my eyes.
"Well, we have only one candidate left." Aero picked up the file of Stav Trajano from the table. "You have to admit, he is our best option."
"He is also a cocky, arrogant jerk." I reminded him.
"So what now? Do you want me to arrange another interview?" He asked.
I stared at his file for a minute. This was the fourth interview this month for the position of my assistant. My last assistant ran away after just one week into the job and it's hard to admit but I was in dire need of someone who has enough guts to survive at this job.
"Miss Montelebalo, Mr. Forbes is waiting for you downstairs." Someone entered my office to inform me.
"Didn't you tell him to wait?" I asked.
"I told him," she said and took a gulp before adding. "half an hour ago."
"You should go." Aero said.
I rubbed my forehead to relieve me of some of the stress. It was date night. Dustin I had the ritual of having a dinner date every Saturday and I had been putting it on hold for three weeks now.
"Call him." I pointed at Stav Trajano's file. "Tell him to be here at 8 am exact."
Saying this, I hurried towards the elevator. Seeing me enter inside, all the people already there slowly walked out and I pressed the button to the lobby.
As I walked out of the elevator, my eyes fell on my boyfriend of four years, Dustin Forbes. Dustin was a chef by profession and we met when I was in my last year of college. His drool-worthy smile and gentle mannerism left me in awe. And his eyes! We started dating one month into meeting and have been together since then.
"I am so sorry, Dust," I said on reaching him.
He looked away with an annoyed look on his face. "You said the same thing last time. And the time before that."
"I had to take interviews for my new assistant. Come on now. Let's go." I said and walked forwards.
"In a business suit?" He asked, following me to the parking lot.
"I don't have time to change. I'll put on makeup in the car." I said, pulling my hair up in a ponytail.
He opened the door for me and I slid inside the passenger seat. He drove us to one of the best restaurants in town and the whole drive, he didn't utter a single word. I knew I was testing his patience and nobody was feeling worse than me but I had some responsibilities. I was not the same girl he met four years ago, who only had to worry about her acne and frizzy hair. Things have changed and so have I.
Once inside the restaurant, he led me to a silent corner on the balcony he had booked for us. The waiter gave us both a menu card and I decided to have a steak today.
The waiter left with both of our orders and I leaned further in my seat. "I already said sorry. What do you want me to say now?" I asked when I noticed his sour mood.
"Just tell me how long are you going to act like this? For God's sake, Alice. We all lose parents but you changed so much after your Dad's death." He whispered.
"Don't go there, Dustin." I stopped him straight.
"Why? Do you not realize what you have become? Where is that girl who always had a big smile on her face?" He scooted closer and held my hands in between his large ones. "I loved that girl."
"That girl didn't have a business empire to run. People change, get over it." I said and pulled my hand away.
"Alice, I can't do this if you act like this." He hid his face in between his palms.
"I..." I was about to say something when my phone started ringing. Picking up the call, I answered Aero who told me that we had an emergency and he needs me back in the office. "I need to go." I told him.
"Are you for real?" He glared back with widened eyes.
"I have to go, Dust. I am sorry." I said, standing up and then picked up my handbag and mobile from the table.
"For God's sake, if you walk out now---"
"Try to understand." I said and booked an Uber. "There is an emergency."
"Fine. Go." He said and stood up to leave. "In fact, take this with you." He took out a small red box from the pocket of his coat and placed it on the table. After doing that, he walked away without giving me another glance.
I picked up the box and opened it, only to find a ring inside. It was a thin, sophisticated band adorned with small crystals and a big crystal in the middle. My head started pounding at the sight of this ring and I felt my knees buckle under my weight.
"Oh, Dustin," I said and put the box in my bag, deciding to deal with it later.
"Shit. Shit. Shit." I chanted under my breath as I slipped into my crisp black shirt. It was my first day at work and I didn't want to be late at any cost but for some reason, my alarm didn't work."Easy up, man." My roommate and best friend Isaiah said as he noticed me frantically combing my brown hair."You don't know her, Isaiah. She will literally suck the soul out of me if I am late." I said and picked up my car key, wallet and other essentials."She couldn't be that bad." He commented and earned a scowl from me the very next minute."That bad? She is a monster. A monster." I said and looked into the mirror for one last time before leaving."Damn, you look hot." Isaiah said and then handed me a peanut butter sandwich.I chuckled at his words and gulped the sandwich down in three bites. After that, I rushed downstairs to the parking lot of the building where my car was parked. Sitting inside my car
The minute I stepped out of the elevator, the whole floor went silent, except one person. My eyes immediately went to Stav who was talking to a blonde girl. With his arm resting on her desk, he was saying something and she was laughing in return. Rolling my eyes at his behaviour, I slowly reached them and cleared my throat. The girl noticed me and immediately went silent, unlike Stav who was still laughing with his back towards me. I coughed again and this time, he recognised my presence, judging by the way his body stilled. Slowly, he turned around and faced me, his Adam's apple bobbing up and down. "Are you done with your chit chat or should I wait?" I asked, assessing his appearance from head to toe. He was wearing a maroon shirt that hugged his muscular torso, and brown pants. His unruly hair was falling over his forehead, giving him boyish look. "Sorry." He apologized under his breath an
It was about 8 in the evening. After doing some light stretches to relieve myself of the exhaustion of sitting all day long, I flopped back on the chair. My hands reached for the first drawer of my desk to pull something out, something that had been a major cause of stress these days. Opening up the red velvety box, I stared at the sparkling ring. Two days ago, Dustin gave this to me, more like left me with it, and now I had no idea what to do with it. He wasn't picking up my calls, he wasn't answering my texts, he wasn't ready to listen to me at all. Taking out the ring, I slid it on my finger. The sight of the gorgeous ring on my hand made me smile a little. I loved him, I had loved him for four years. Before all of this happened, before I was given the responsibility of this multinational company, we were so happy and nothing could bring me more joy than being his wife. But things were different now. Marriage was not on my mind right now. I had so many res
"Stav, we will be leaving in half an hour. You ready?" one of my colleagues asked as I was on my way back to the office from the storage room."Yeah, I'm almost done," I told him and walked forwards into my office. It was my fourth day at work, fourth day of working under Devil. This past week had been a living hell and I was looking forward to the weekend. Tonight, I was supposed to join all the other employees at a club so that I could introduce myself to everyone properly.Sitting back in my seat, I gave one last look to Monday's schedule so I could reach the office in time. Stretching my arms over my head, I yawned and my eyes inadvertently reached Alice sitting at her desk through the glass window. She was busy looking at the file in her hand. There was a pencil in between her plump lips stained with dark red lipstick. Her hair was gathered on top of her head in a messy bun and there was a cute frown on her forehead.Cute? This is the devil we
Parking my car in the parking lot, I looked one last time into the mirror. My hair was a mess because I had no time to style it today. My alarm didn't wake me up this morning so here I was, in front of the building just a few minutes before Alice Montelebalo usually arrived.Leaving the car, I rushed inside the building. Briefly saying good morning to the receptionist, I scurried into the elevator and closed my eyes in relief that I got here on time, if not in time."You are late." A familiar voice reached my ears and it felt like déjà vu."My alarm didn't work today," I said to Alice, and walked towards the back of the elevator."That's a shitty excuse," she said. "This is your second strike in one week.""It won't happen again," I said and she nodded.I was standing right behind her and her hair was blocking my view. Unknowingly, I checked her out. She was wearing a peach color body-con dress that hugged her curves and ended
I was giving one last look to the guest list when my eyes landed on the man putting the huge flower vase near the entrance of the penthouse. Leaving the notebook on the table, I rushed towards him and said, "Do you want to get me killed? Alice specifically wanted white orchids. These are purple.""We couldn't find the white ones in the flower shop," the man whose name I didn't know replied."Then go search every other flower shop in the city. God, do people not have common sense these days?" I said frantically."Hey, don't freak out. It will be fine." I heard Sunshine's voice as she reached my side. She volunteered to help me keep a check on the arrangements for the gala. We had been in Alice's house since 12pm and it was 5 in the evening now. The guests would start arriving in no time and there were still many things to do."How can I not freak out?" I asked, pulling out the to-do list from my pocket."Like this." Sunshine shrugged carefully and a
Dustin and I stood next to each other, observing the party around us. I had to admit, Stav went out of his way to make sure there was no mistake on his part. Not that I was going to tell him that. His big ego didn't need any more boasting."Everybody is dancing," Dustin commented, staring at the corner where some couples were gathered. "Spare me a dance?" he said and extended his arm."For old time's sake." I nodded and put my hand on top of his. We moved to the dimly lit area with our one hands linked. He placed his other arm on the small of my waist, while our eyes locked together. Dustin had a beautiful face; piercing grey eyes with skin that resembled melted caramel and sharp cheekbones. And the fact that he always smelled so good didn't help either. We moved in synchronization with the rhythm of the music. The familiarity of his hold made my stomach flutter. It felt right but it was too late now. We were broken up for reasons that were still there. He might
"And the net budget of the project was 5 million. Half the revenue produced went to-"I was standing in front of the ceiling-high glass window of my office, staring at the beautiful moon while dictating some important points to Stav. The sky was clear today, hundreds of stars filling it like white paint on black canvas."Where was I?" I asked him when I found myself distracted. When no reply came, I turned around and found his eyes closed. His hand was limply resting on the notebook and his head was bent forwards, unsupported.Walking towards his chair, I seated myself on the desk in front of him. Crossing my arms in front of my chest, I kicked his shin and he jumped up in his seat. He looked around flabbergasted and it took him a moment to realize where he was."Good morning, sweetheart, would you like some tea?" I said sarcastically."Um..." He blinked twice. "Coffee would be better."His sentence earned him another kick on the shin
"Let's call it a day," I said, leaning back in my seat and stretching my arms. "Do you want me to order some food for you, Mr. Trajano?" Celine asked. "It's fine. I'll go home and eat with my wife." I said and stood up to leave. Once I reached the elevator, my eyes fell on Sunshine, standing inside with her hands linked with Thea. Apparently, after dating me, Sunshine reached this conclusion that she wasn't into men anymore. That was a pretty big blow to my ego, not that I didn't deserve it. "Stav." She acknowledged me with a nod. "Sunshine." I passed her a professional smile. The whole elevator ride was somewhat awkward, after which I went straight to the parking lot where my driver was already waiting for me. Almost one year ago, a month before my marriage to Alice, we decided to merge both companies. I took over as the CEO of Montelebalo-Trajano enterprises while Alice decided to head the board. It was the only thing feasible, becau
"What the hell is your doing? Stav, untie me right now." I groaned."Patience, love," Stav said and guided me out of the car. I had been blindfolded for the last fifteen minutes now and despite my utmost displeasure, all I got in response was, "Patience.""Where are you taking me?" I groaned as I felt my heels sinking in the ground. He held me straight by wrapping his arm around my waist and led me forwards."I am going to tie you up and have my way with you," he whispered in my ear and I felt a shiver down my spine. I heard him chuckle at my reaction, after which he untied the blindfold and rolled me around to see where he had taken me.In front of me was probably the most beautiful sight I had ever seen. We were on a dark beach, dimly illuminated by a few fire lamps dispersed here and there. The sun had already set and the moon was casting its beautiful shadow on the blue water. There was a table set near the shore, two chairs around it facing the sea.
The minute I saw Dustin dressed in a three piece suit, I immediately realized that this was a mistake. It was never supposed to be a "friendly" dinner. And then there I was, dressed in blue jeans and a button down black shirt, with my hair tied back with the help of a bandana."Where are we going?" I asked him nervously."Your favourite restaurant. Delilah's eatery," he said."I don't go there anymore, since I came to know that the owner, Delilah is homophobic and racist," I replied and an awkward silence prevailed inside the car."Oh, I didn't know that. Where do you want to go?" he asked.Somewhere casual, so this won't turn into a date."Let's go to McDonald's," I offered. He laughed out loud at this."I am serious. I am craving a cheeseburger," I added."Wait, you are kidding me. Right? We can go to some nice burger place. What about Emily's?" he asked."Fine." I sighed in defeat. There was no way out o
It was almost 2am. After taking a bath and fueling myself with caffeine, I returned to my home office to continue working. With this new decision I had made, things were going to be really hard for the next few months. The work load was going to triple, but I would happily do it if I could be with Alice at the end of the day."You are still working?" I heard Dad's voice. He was standing near the doorframe, watching me with curious eyes. Mom and Dad came to visit me a few days ago but I couldn't find enough time to spend with them."Yes, Dad. I still have these reports to review," I said."You shouldn't have made the decision of moving the head branch to Philippines right now. Things are going to be really hard for you. You should have given yourself some time to settle in," he said."Don't you think I know that?" I passed him an exhausted smile. "I need to be with her, Dad. It's killing me not being near her.""You love her, don't you?" He chuckled
Another month had passed.Another month of drowning myself in work to avoid facing the fact that I was all alone. Another month of being heartbroken, and mentally and physically stressed. Another month of trying to distract myself by taking different hobbies like Pilates and gardening in my free time.I missed Stav, so much that it was killing me. I remembered two weeks ago, when I finally caved in and ended up calling him. We talked for about an hour and that's when I realized how correct he was. Listening to his voice made it harder to stay away.Sundays were comparatively better. I spent the afternoon in the academy and the rest of the day doing different chores. I had befriended all the other students in my class and it was refreshing because they didn't know me as the tyrant CEO.As far as work was concerned, there was nothing to talk about. I had grown used to having Stav in the office and in his absence, the whole office felt dull and drab. It was
I woke up with a strong arm tightly wrapped around me and a heavy weight on my chest that turned out to be Stav's head. My eyes searched for the clock which showed that it was almost midday, which meant we had slept for twelve hours straight. That was the most I had slept in days and apparently, so had Stav."Hey." I brushed his hair to wake him up. My cheeks were flushed at our position, the way our legs were intertwined and his mouth was resting in the valley of my breast, using me as his own personal cushion."Stav," I whispered, grazing his back with my fingernails. He stretched on top of me and then lifted his head, staring at me with his pearl green eyes."Come with me," he said, giving me a peck and then rolling off me. "I want to wake up like this daily. In fact, take me with you.""What about your company?" I said, playing with the dark lock that had fallen on his forehead."Ugh. Why do you have to remind me?" He groaned, kissing my
Once the elevator door closed behind Stav, we were alone in the small space with nowhere to go. He stepped towards me, his signature scent filling the air. I took a step back, recreating the space between us but he seemed to have ignored my attempt and continued walking forwards until we were standing forehead to forehead."I am sorry," he whispered and his breath tickled the skin around my mouth."Well, so am I." I flashed him a humourless laugh. I was angry, so angry that I wanted to rip his stupid clothes off. What the fuck? No, that's the opposite of what I wanted. For all I cared, he could wear another suit over this one."I didn't want to hurt you," he said."Well, you did a pretty good job at that." I glared at him, crossing my arms in front of my chest before his heat could seep through me and lower my defenses."Let me explain why I didn't call you back. It will make you hate me less." His voice was filled with grief and desperation and a
Ignoring Alice when she wasn't around was hard, but ignoring Alice when she was around me was my own personal hell. The minute I saw her, all the reasons for ignoring her sounded so trivial and all I wanted was to go to her and listen to her voice. For the last two months, I had been anxious. My sleep wake cycle was disturbed, my head ached most of the time, my heart beat faster than it should, my stomach was a mess. I thought it was because of the extra work stress but when my eyes landed on her, a sense of euphoria swirled through me and all the anxieties were settled, all the aches were cured.I wanted her to talk to me, to scold me, to glare at me, but all I got was a cold greeting and it left a bitter taste in my mouth.I couldn't exactly blame her for the cold shoulder she was giving me. After all, after being AWOL for two months, I stole a project from her the day we met again. And Alice wasn't someone who took such things lightly.I tried to expla
When Stav stopped responding to my texts and calls, a series of weird emotions happened. The first day, I was agitated. I thought he was probably busy and made excuses to myself for his lack of response but it did nothing to calm my racing heart. The second day, I was anxious because I thought I did something to earn that reaction. The next day, I was worried for him. I thought something had happened to him but his Facebook profile said he attended an event last night. So apparently, he was alive and kicking. And then the day after that, I was furious. It had been two months since then and it's safe to say, I was still furious at him. Most of the time, I kept myself busy so I wouldn't have to think about him. Because whenever I did, my hands itched to go to him and strangle him for his stupid behaviour. He avoided me like a plague and the worst thing was, I didn't even know why.Right now, I was inside a cab, on my way to a meeting from the hotel. Kaye was sitti
