"Becca, it's time to leave for the ceremony," I heard my mother say softly as she knocked on my bedroom door.
I let out a deep sigh of discomfort as I thought about the upcoming event. The mating ceremony of the future Alpha was a significant event, and no one could be absent without express permission from the Alpha. Unfortunately, I was not granted that privilege and had an obligation to attend. I wanted to avoid any risk of my family getting into trouble by deliberately staying away. Heartbreak was not an acceptable excuse for not showing up, and I was not ready to face the Alpha’s wrath. I put on a pair of simple skinny jeans featuring distressed fabric at both knees, paired with an elegant white top.
My parents were waiting for me in the sitting room. When my father saw my chosen outfit, it was clear that he did not approve of it. Before any harsh comments could be made by him, my mother pulled him aside and spoke to him privately, away from earshot. After successfully resolving this issue between them, we walked as a family towards the wide-open meeting space, which had been festively decorated.
Both my parents flanked me while tightly gripping each one of my hands protectively as we moved through crowds bustling excitedly around. My parents were the head warriors of the pack, but instead of sitting in our usual front seats, we took the back row today. I believe my parents deliberately aimed to send a message to Elyon's family with this.
As we sat comfortably in our seats, my father squeezed my hand encouragingly, while my mother draped her arm over my shoulders. Not long after, Elyon stepped onto the stage with Xena on his arm. He traversed through the audience, scanning every familiar face until eventually locating mine amidst all of them. I read regret in his eyes, but that was pointless at this moment since my life had already been shattered anyway.
"Breathe deeply through your nose and exhale gradually," I heard my father say from far away. "This is going to be terrible."
The sound of his words washed over me like a calming balm as I braced myself for what was to come. I never expected this impending ordeal to be easy, but with his reassuring presence at hand, I summoned all the courage within me to endure whatever discomfort may arise from this trying experience.
After the completion of the installation procedure, the eventful moment arrived when Elyon had to mark his mate. He hesitated at first, slightly shifting his eyes towards me. An impatient hint from his father, and a second later, Elyon's sharp fangs pierced into Xena's neck, solidifying my fate.
The agony I felt in the depths of my chest was almost intolerable, causing me to emit a heartrending cry, and tears welled up in my eyes anew. As if on cue, every head turned towards me with keen interest. Elyon himself took a step forward as though he wanted nothing else but to come over to offer me comfort during my distressful moment. But his father quickly intervened and directed him back into place next to Xena.
I turned around and ran towards the dense forest behind the packhouse at high speed. I dashed over fallen tree stumps and shallow streams of water as far as my feet could take me. Countless small animals halted their daily activities to gaze in amazement at me along the way. They were no doubt curious about what had caused such haste for me.
Eventually, my body succumbed to the incredible exertion, and I crumpled onto the sloping edge of a small waterfall. My muscles were spent and bruised from running through harsh terrain. With nothing left in me but despair, I sprawled out beside the flow of water before drifting off into unconsciousness.
When I opened my eyes once more, there was only one name occupying my thoughts.
Elyon!!
The man of my dreams, with whom I thought I would have a future filled with many lovable pups and would grow old together. But now he is claimed by someone else—from this day forth Xena will be the one lying in his arms, marking him as hers again when night falls. I never thought that this day would ever come; I was totally convinced that our love could overcome all obstacles, including broken mate bonds. Sadly, it seems not to be so.
Due to the overwhelming feeling of weariness, I fell asleep under the open sky once more. My tears were done, and there was no more left in me. Every inch of my body felt stiff from all the intense emotions that had ravaged it.
When I finally opened my eyes, it was already late in the evening. As soon as I looked around and cleared my blurry vision, it became obvious how warm and pleasant everything felt. Normally at this time of year, the air was quite chilly.
When I lifted my head, I noticed that I was lying next to a lively blaze of firewood. I felt a folded towel under my head, surely that allowed me comfort to be able to sleep soundly. Sitting up straight, I looked around me. There were no signs of any individual; only the dark forest loomed over and watched silently upon me.
"Wake up already?"
An unexpected resonant and masculine voice erupted behind me. Startled by the sudden sound, I swiftly spun around to face a towering young man with white-blond hair and bright blue orbs who had intruded upon my space.
"I, uh... I mean...," I faltered nervously, taken aback by the sudden appearance.
I wasn't sure if this meeting would be the end of my life. I had never seen such a peculiar stranger in our pack territory before. Judging from the scent, he was not a rogue, but could possibly be half-bred or human. Regardless of his origin, he left me questioning his intentions and whether I should tread carefully around him during our interaction.
"You are in violation," I conveyed to him after recovering from the shock. "You have trespassed onto private property and could be attacked or jailed if you stay here without proper permission."
The man lifted both of his arms above his head in a sign of surrender. "Listen, I mean no harm. I'm just camping, and I'll be gone in a few days," he explained, while his acutely observant gaze fixated upon me. "I was under the impression that these grounds were liberally granted for public use by our government." As I glanced upwards at him towering over me, I felt an inexplicable aura of genuineness emanating from the man.
"Zane Coovens, nice to meet you," he introduced himself.
I raised my hand to match his height, and as our hands touched, a powerful surge of electricity coursed through me.
"Becca," I responded kindly.
"Would you mind if I sat next to you?" asked Zane, pointing to a spot in front of me on the grass."Of course not," I invited him.My werewolf instincts had identified him as harmless, which played a major role in reducing my tension and anxiety while being around him."I sincerely don't mean to offend you, Becca, but you look awful. Your face is quite tearful and despondent, and your eyes are bloodshot," he observed carefully. "Such mental anguish can only arise from deep-seated sadness or emotional pain. Did a close family member suddenly die? Have you failed an exam? Or did a boyfriend break your heart?"As he made his final assumption, I felt my complexion flush with embarrassment."Hmmm," he murmured thoughtfully, a faint smile gracing his lips. "I believe I'm on fire with my guessing. Which one is it?" He then chuckled in an easygoing way. "Just so you know, and this might come in handy somehow, I happen to be proficient in Tai Kwan Do. So if ever there's a need for me to go int
As the days turned into weeks and the weeks became months, time seemed to slip away in a hazy reverie.Over the course of time, an incredible bond had formed between Zane and me; he truly was an outstanding guy. Being in his presence made me feel so at ease, my heart trembled with excitement each moment he arrived back home. His house was indeed big. It stood three stories tall and boasted fourteen splendid rooms, each equipped with a luxurious private en-suite.Our bedrooms were on the second floor. On the first floor, there was a generously sized kitchen space outfitted with state-of-the-art utensils and equipment to prepare all kinds of lavish meals. In addition, there was a spacious dining section capable of accommodating numerous guests at once. Further down on the same floor, an area existed that could function as either an office or conference zone. Moreover, there was also a grand living area on that floor. To the already existing storage spaces within the house, there was als
As soon as we arrived home, I immediately addressed the matter regarding that kiss. The public display of affection would eventually continue to haunt us. Several snapshots had been captured, and who knew where they would all end up?"Zane, hmm. I must say that the kiss was really deep and it has caused me to question where our relationship stands at present. Until now, I believed us to be in a phase of platonic friendship, nothing more than close friends. But that kiss…hmm."He closed the distance between us, took me tenderly in his arms, and carefully lifted my face with one hand. As we gazed into each other's eyes, his face drew nearer to mine until our lips were mere inches apart. The intensity of the moment was palpable as he maintained unbroken eye contact with me while positioning himself in such a way that I could feel his breath on my skin."I am unsure whether you are ready for this yet, but I cannot keep it to myself any longer. Becca, I want you to know how important and s
Ever since that day, our life had felt like a fragile dream that I feared could shatter at any moment.Almost forgotten was Elyon as I basked in my utter happiness. Zane was so natural with me, his kisses were many and his adoring gaze upon me was enough to make me feel treasured. Slowly, but surely, I began to regain the confidence that Elyon had stripped away from me through his humiliation. When we hit the hay at night, our extended talks persisted until one of us grew weary and dozed off. We had so much in common, our late night talks never seemed to end. Today I cooked Zane's favorite dish: sweet and sour sea fish with Tyap Soy mix Broccoli and Shrimp, a Chinese recipe. Whenever we ate out, this was his go-to meal, guaranteed to leave an empty plate every time.Tonight, I intended to bring up a delicate topic; I really needed a job to earn my own income. We'd had this discussion before and Zane wiped this off the table in no time. He insisted that with his platinum card, I could
I was not quite sure which words to use in order to convey this sensation accurately.Maybe it was what we werewolves known as the pull. But I found myself being drawn to Zane as if I were a bee captivated by honey, unable to resist his charms. This sexual attraction between us was undeniable, always on the surface. And words had turned me on, I’m on fire now.His eyes were burning on me, calling, enticing with a gentle touch of promise. The melancholic weight that had been bearing down on me lifted as I began to feel a newfound warmth emanating from my stomach. This was totally new for me.Slowly, I got up, still staring at Zane. Then I knelt down in front of him, positioning myself between his long legs.As my hand reached behind his head, I drew him in for a wet kiss. He remained passive, granting me full control over the moment. Maybe he was letting me think about what it is that I truly wanted from him. Sensually, my tongue traced his lips, seeking entry.Still passive, he contin
Hesitantly, I walked over to Elyon's bed.He had a bandage wrapped around his head, and ropes tied around his arms and legs. As my scent reached him, he gradually opened his eyes."Becca!" he murmured with a tone of disbelief mixed in. "Come closer, my love."I leaned down to him and fixed my gaze upon the eyes that had misled me for years. My heart constricted; there was no way I would permit him to harm me once more."Not a day has gone by without my guilt gnawing at me. Forgive me, my love. I wish I could have done it differently, but I had to prioritize the interests of our pack."A sharp pain ripped through my heart and I gasped for breath. So not only did he sacrifice our love for a mate, but also for the sake of securing a position that was rightfully his all along. As the Alpha's sole heir, it was his birthright to gain the seat, regardless of who he chose as Luna. That was nice to know how much I was worth to him, yeah!"It doesn't matter anymore, Elyon," I told him, trying t
After meeting Elyon, the subsequent weeks were difficult and demanding for me.With a shattered soul, I had retreated into myself and spent most of my days in my bedroom. There, I would wallow in feelings of self-doubt and misery which consumed me entirely. This inner turmoil took its toll on my physical health; losing weight due to loss of appetite coupled with dehydration left me looking skinny. In the meantime, I had moved out of Zane's bedroom and settled back into my former living quarters that were three doors down. Even our evenings watching television, which I had always looked forward to, I skipped in order to spend more time pondering in my own space. Zane made multiple attempts at lifting my mood and alleviating any burdensome emotions but to no avail.Recently, Krystal informed me that Elyon had been moved from the hospital in Human Town to the pack's facilities after three days.A week later, he had made quite an impressive recovery but opted to take it easy, not only to
It appeared as though I had been given an opportunity for a new beginning in my life.Zane made a considerable effort to keep me from falling into despair yet again. He even went as far as taking an entire week off from his responsibilities to be with me. During that time, we shared many valuable moments together visiting all of my favorite spots and having delightful experiences. And it truly was effective. It has proven to be quite favorable in lifting my spirits and boosting my morale. Our trips to the beach, in particular, were a great success. The feeling of refreshing waves kissing my toes made me feel alive. I especially enjoyed playing both volleyball and water polo on its picturesque sands. We never had trouble finding sports players, whether it was by sheer luck or actively searching for companions among fellow sunbathers, we always managed to find ourselves in good company at this heavenly destination. When it came to socializing skills, Zane had his dream team enlisted wit
Becca’s Point Of View Still"Do you still want to visit Zane?" I heard Johnston ask.I jolted out of my haze and back to the present. There was a moment of silence in the car as both of us were lost in our thoughts."What's left to discuss with him?" I replied bitterly. "I'm not going to embarrass him by demanding an explanation about how he got my friend pregnant. I was there myself, remember? So there's nothing more to say."The words hung heavily in the air, a painful reminder of the betrayal that had shattered my world. I felt a lump in my throat as memories of Zane flooded back, each one tainted by the revelation of his deceit. The nights we spent dreaming of a future together and the promises whispered when I was in his arms all now felt like a cruel joke.Johnston's grip tightened on the steering wheel, his knuckles turning white.I could sense his frustration and helplessness, as he wanted to protect me from all this but knew he couldn't change the past. The reality of my fall
"And by the way, I have some news for you. I am pregnant with Zane, we are expecting our first child in seven months."A stab of pain shot through my heart, causing my breath to catch and tears to stream from my eyes."No," I whispered brokenly. My knees gave way beneath me, but before I could reach the ground, Johnston caught me and pressed me against his chest. I screamed, the pain was too much."Get a grip on yourself, Becca, please," I heard Johnston from afar as he stroked my hand. "Everything will be fine, I promise you." How could everything turn out all right? I thought to myself in despair. I had lost Zane too, that was far worse than when Elyon rejected me.It was only then that I realized Zane was the man of my life, my breath. However, Marelva’s statement hit me like a punch to the gut. It was too late, he was out of my reach forever. Maybe I had pushed my luck too far by going against the grain. I should have listened when he urged me not to go out to work and instead set
"Some men just don't learn," I heard Johnston mutter beside me. His face was stormy, and his fingers were clenched on the wheel. We were in the car, but he still hesitated to start the engine, struggling to control his temper. He adjusted the shades on his nose and glanced back at the terrace where we left Elyon. With mixed feelings, I glanced in the same direction, but thankfully, the couple was out of sight. After taking a few deep breaths, he turned on the switch, and we were on our way to Marelva to pick up the rest of my belongings.Johnston suddenly faced me. "Becca, I have a friend nearby whom I would like to visit. He owns a fabric shop, maybe you can buy something there for your parents too."That was a perfect idea. I nodded happily, and we entered a business street. Parking seemed to be a big problem there. With great difficulty, Johnston squeezed his robust truck into a narrow space."That's craftsmanship. Not everyone can handle such a huge pickup in such a small space,"
Becca’s Point Of ViewTwo weeks later, I realized I couldn't dodge the inevitable any longer. I needed to come out of hiding and get my life back on track. First, I had to address my past. Johnston had offered to help me retrieve the rest of my belongings from Marelva’s apartment, and then accompany me to Moon Shine for a visit with my parents.Yes, I was going to spend an entire afternoon with my parents in my pack and do everything I could to avoid Elyon and his mate. I just wanted to feel the warmth of my parents in my old environment again, that's called re-energizing in modern terms. I was especially looking forward to that. In the evening, before I returned to the cabin, I would face Zane. Not that I was really looking forward to meeting him. The pain of loss was still fresh. I mentioned heartbreak a few times, but I wasn't sure if I was truly in love with Zane. It was more the betrayal that hurt. What I did know was that if things had turned out differently, I'd have been willi
Standing speechless before Alpha Alex, Johnston was still trying to make sense of what he had just heard. As Alex's Beta and best friend, he knew him like no other. Alex was a tough nut to crack, unapproachable and not particularly capable of showing affection. He had always been fiercely independent, valuing strength and loyalty from those around him above all else. Johnston noticed that Alex's walls went up higher and thicker after the death of his parents, causing him to become even more emotionally distant. But he bet on the strength of the mate bond. Maybe it could magically change his friend’s attitude and make him capable of being a caring and loving mate to Becca. He had witnessed the power of this bond with others; it was a force so powerful that it could mend even the most shattered souls. Maybe, just maybe, Becca could be the one to break through Alex's barriers and bring out the softer side he kept buried deep within."If Xan acknowledged her, what are you up to? It looks
I had been in the cabin for three weeks now, which was far overdue.Yes, I knew the deal with Johnston was that I would stay there for only a week, but I wasn't ready to face the harsh world yet. So, I continued hiding in this secluded hut deep in the jungle like a coward. My parents kept me updated every day through our mind link, informing me about everything happening in the pack and beyond. They told me that Zane called them almost daily, desperately asking when I'd be ready to talk to him. He begged them to disclose my whereabouts, pleading for a chance to explain. He told my mother that we were in the midst of a big misunderstanding. He didn’t go into details, probably because he was too ashamed of what happened or feared my parents' judgment.Johnston visited me every day for a few hours. He had become a good friend, and we had a lot of fun together. Sometimes we cooked and ate together, roasted some meat on a self-made barbecue set, or just chatted about business on the verand
Becca’s Point Of ViewIt was nearly midnight, and I was lying on the bed with my hands behind my head, staring at the ceiling. I reflected on the most challenging moments of my life. My wolf had already helped me recover swiftly from the injuries sustained in the car accident, but it was my heartbreak that still needed mending. The pain I felt when I saw the man I loved naked under the woman I took for a friend was still raw. It pierced my heart even more deeply than anything Elyon had ever done to me."Don't jump to conclusions," Era's warning voice reminded me again. "Talk to him first. Hear his side of the story," she urged.I was uncertain if I would be able to do that. We had intended to spend that day together, taking our relationship one step further. Unfortunately, things didn't go as planned. If only I had stayed with him the night before the accident! But we were hoping to have uninterrupted time for each other at home, without work on our minds or other things getting in th
Johnston's Point of ViewIt was already the early morning hours, and I was still sitting in the conference room of the pack, tired and irritated. That Alpha of mine didn't seem to really know which direction to take with this meeting. He changed the conditions for the collaboration in the draft contract with the Department of Justice in Human Town every few hours. The execution process and the list of materials required for the joint operations, as well as the projected goals on the human side and more, had been revised over ten times in the past two hours. We weren't making much progress, and all I could think about was going to my bedroom for a good night's rest.Later in the day, I needed to return to the sheriff's office with a signed agreement. However, that didn't seem to work. At this pace, nothing would come of the contract. And then he constantly slid closer and sniffed me.What the heck?!I was sure he didn't have any gay tendencies, but his behavior was highly odd. I couldn
"But you haven't told me where to go yet," Johnston reminded me.The atmosphere in the car was relaxed. In the short time we had known each other, we had chatted as if we had been acquainted for years. I relaxed, thinking nothing could happen to me in the company of a Beta, right?"I was on my way to the forest. My wolf says we can stay there for a week before going back. We need some time alone."Johnston's face became serious now. "The forest is not safe for a woman alone. We haven't seen rogues in the area for a long time, but you never know," he said with concern. "Why do you want to be in the forest? Coping with heartbreak?"I nodded and looked out the window. I now knew what led me to the hospital, and I completely agreed with Era that we needed some space to process what we had seen. She persuaded me not to despise Zane until I had all the facts. Her voice was a mix of desperation and hope, indicating that she truly loved him. She solely blamed Marelva for what happened, clingi
