Dion saw the things written about him on tabloids. His name was tarnished yet again. He had to remind himself that some people really wanted to destroy him, even mere maids. But Daphne’s case was not that at all. It was only ‘one thing led to another and another to disaster’ type of situation. He did not want face Daphne again; he only wanted the next day to come so that he would leave for his country already.
The next day came faster than expected. It was the early hours of the morning. Dion was all packed and ready to leave that darned place. Liam and Thandi would follow him as usual. All of their bags were already tossed into the boot. Bowman was rather shocked when he saw the news. It was nothing new to see his son on the news but this time, it had gotten widespread. The people were even boycotting Dion from ever being the next CEO of his father’s company—the International Transport Service Unit (ITSU). That company employed a lot of people and these people were worried for their jobs if Dion was to become the next CEO.
Even Bowman, could not think of a good PR for the situation at hand. “When did this happen? Dion, how did this happen?”
Dion had nothing to say to his father. Dion was too frustrated to even talk.
“Dion, do you not know that this will make it harder for you to take over the company? Did you even think about that?” Bowman’s finger kept sliding on the tablet to see more of the articles going viral on the internet. Dion did want to bring up Daphne’s name but a big part of him hindered him as he thought his father would side with the young woman over him. Hence, it was pointless, he thought.
There entered Daphne, all sad and shy again. She did seem genuine holding that posture. “It was me; I did that. Sir Bowman, I called the news last night and this is how it has turned out. I am really sorry, sir.” She continued this time, her eyes locked with Dion’s, “I will leave this place instead. It doesn’t have to be you. I have caused you so much trouble. You must be thinking that I’m insane. I’m sorry for hurting your image like that—” Dion was only now beginning to admit to himself that this woman was indeed strong and fearless. He stood there without much to say.
“Daphne!” Bowman was shocked. “You did this to my son?! You have just ruined my son’s career; don’t you know that? Couldn’t you come to me; couldn’t anyone tell me what was going this whole time?!”
“I have already packed every ‘rag’ I own. I wanted you to see me leave, hence, you may rest assured,” she started walking out.“Wait,” Dion had forced the word out of himself. Daphne paused and turned to the man who could not bring his eyes to her. “Your sick mother depends on you,” he recited the words she once told him, “you depend on you. I mean, you depend on the job. Don’t leave the job for me. I am for greater things; this job is of no use to me.”It was shocking, Dion let things slide—he sook no revenge. Liam managed to find Daphne alone, “Daphne. Daphne, you did good. You have made me very proud. No one’s salary is getting cut and Chef Clark is safe.”
However, Daphne was still worried about the news that continued to write on, more and more people were stepping forward to share their ordeal working with Dion. “Don’t stress about that.” Liam wanted to assure her, Liam did not want her to worry, “You’re not the first girl to get his name on the newspapers. He’s made a lot of headlines than you think.”
“Ow, Liam,” she embraced him. “That makes me feel a lot better. Thank you, Liam.” Daphne added, “Take care of him, Liam… for me.”
Liam was a bit disappointed, he hoped that she would worry about him and not Dion, so much. He began remembering the other conversation where he was about to ask her out. He never could get the rest of the words out that night. He had dismissed that conversation. Maybe, if he had professed his love for her, she would have started to consider him. “I won’t leave his side.” He agreed to stay with Dion and take care of him for Daphne’s sake. “I mean, his behind.” It was kind of funny when he put it like that. It was a joke that Daphne easily understood—Dion always kept Liam behind as his butler. Hence, Liam was never at Dion’s side, he was at his behind. They giggled upon it.
……………………………………………………………………………...
Dion had a flash back of the events that went down in his father’s study, the previous day. This was when Daphne wanted to talk with Bowman but had to turn around because Dion was in there. The conversation he had with his father was about the CEO position of ITSU…
……………memory……………
Bowman had repeated himself again as always, “I am not giving you the company until you teach yourself how to communicate with people.”“Big deal! If you just do not want to give me the company, just say it and stop lying about loving and communication. I don’t want to hear it!”
“Well then, kiss the opportunity goodbye. I won’t let you ruin the company I’ve worked hard on all my life. I put it where it is today because of a kind heart, not only hard work. What good is a ruthless man in a business, anyway?” Bowman started fiddling with the papers on his desk. “Every alliance will abandon ship and swim if you carry on like that. Tell you what, you just take the Metallic wholesalers in Durban and show me what you can do. I’ll be the judge if you’re ready for the big ITSU.”
Dion took a while to glare at the man who did not bother looking back. He hated that Bowman did not see his eyes; he banged the table so loud that it shook Bowman a bit. Bowman watched his son thrust away the chair and tramp out of the room. Bowman got back to his work.
…………memory……….
Naturally, Dion fussed at the decision at first, but he learned to accept it. Seeing the boycott online made it easier for him to settle for the new position at Metallic Wholesalers.
Dion was standing outside with his father, by the car. They were saying their goodbyes but Dion was feeling a little awkward. He was focusing his mind on other things than his father.
“Liam?!” Dion cried. “Geez, where is this Liam? He makes my life so hard!”
The father laughed it off, “Oh, Dion. So, you got your passport ready?”
“Yeah, sure, old man. Ow Liam, where is he? We should get going already! I’m going to leave him behind, I swear.”
“Son,” the father, calmly, was laughing. “Son, hey… Take it easy, okay? Are you missing me already? Is big bad boy Dion Hill missing daddy already? You don’t have to take it out on Liam.”
“Ow, come on. Get a grip! And did you really have to say that out loud?”
Like always, the father would laugh at his stubborn son. He pulled him by his elbow and tucked him right under his arm. He quickly embraced his son and let go. But Dion felt that that hug was not enough, he pulled his dad back and covered in him again.
//--I don’t really know but I… Somehow, I feel like I will not see him in a very long time and that just makes me sad. I cannot bear the pain. The void is building already. The flight is taking its toll on me. Looking down through this window makes me realise that I am really leaving him behind. Seeing these roof tops fading out of sight like that feels like watching my dad fade out of sight. It is rough with my soul.
Yeah, I get it, I came here a week ago and now I’m kind of going back to my life in Jo’burg. I get that we always meet to part again but I assure you this feeling is strange to me. It is so huge, and it is sore. I remember the last time I had it, it was when I heard of how my mother died.
Not that my father was dying or anything. And most certainly, I am not dying either! There’s a new life ahead of me. My dad is sending me to Durban to act CEO at Metallic Wholesaler—this is to test my skills. Soon, he will let me run The International Transport Service Unit (ITSU). Soon and very soon.
For years, my dad has been taunting me, telling me about love and respect, and especially love. I do love! I love the man! Surely, he cannot expect me to love the rest of the world. There are vultures out there and if anything, Chinua Achebe has taught me the dirty side of vultures. How they come on to you when you are already down. How they suck and choke on your guts. Yeah, I know, it’s disgusting! I feel sorry for those that fall victim to those bashed-in heads victimisers. I really do. Okay, I really don’t. I will have to care to feel sorry for them.
The only person I care about in this world is Bowman Hill. But I always come first, of course. So, those are the two people that matter in the course of living as far as I am concerned.
Anyway, I am glad that dad is able to let me be CEO. Of course, this Durban wholesaler business is just a test and maybe an experience to catching the bigger fish. No, make it shark. This shark that I’m talking about is ITSU. It is the only thing I have worked all my life for. It is what I have always been about. It is what has always defined me. ‘The boy who will someday be the owner of ITSU’. That is big! This is the beginning of something here. I feel that soon I will own ITSU.
Imagine me, love. That is a higher level of oxymoron, patching me and the word love in one sentence like that. People can be so creative with words. They make me want to bow down often, especially when they whine about love ‘conquers all’. Who believes any of that? They make it sound so great, like it is the only purpose of living, and as if without it, life is meaningless. And going as far as believing that love is joy? Heck, I have seen people cry because of love! Love is unconditional? Old men leave their wives every now and then for a younger woman. Love is selflessness? Tell me about love in the presence of ‘I’. Everything is ‘I’ these days.
How can love exist in a world where the word, ‘myself’ exists? I think it is foolishness to believe the lies surrounding ‘love’. People are dreaming. It is like they live in a different planet on earth. Every day is a day for them to dream on. I even hear some say they wait for the love of their lives. Is that not waste of time? Why sit around and mope and day-dream about a world that does not exist? --//
Dion walked the halls of the big building, in Metallic Wholesalers. He was too excited. He couldn’t wait go there and show his face as the new CEO of the company. The respect that the people gave him was shockingly amazing. Most, if not all, of the functional managers went rushing out of their offices to welcome the only son of Master Bowman Hill. Sadly, not one of them had a shake of his hand. All Dion did was flash through the passage and look down on every hand that made way towards him. His goal was to get to his new office and there was nothing to stand in his way. They could only try and convince themselves that he was a very busy man, but little did they know that a terrible storm was rumbling above the dark clouds. In his office he found his PA. She was happy to introduce herself. Shoulders back, chest out and a broad smile, she was confident, “Terresa Fourie, your personal assistant.” She had her hand stretched out for his grip, “How are you, sir?”Dion only chose not to ente
Dion entered the premises and it showed. Every person in the building got on their toes. It was jitters and nerves. And perhaps fear. The big ITSU, that took up the largest land of Johannesburg. It was the first branch that Bowman built. He had extended it many times and renovated it many times to finally be as worthy for nominations as one of the land-markers of the town. “He’s back!” cries had begun.“What’s he doing here?”“Oh, no. What if he’s been told that I came in late five times last week? I am sacked!”“What if he knows that Brian and Zack had a fight again?”“What’s he doing here!”It was panic. As he walked through, they made way for him. They sat at their desks and each one as serious as though doing their work with passion. He paid no attention to them this time. He was on a mission. He was meeting Gabriel Wilson, his mentor. Gabriel Wilson was the marketing manager and he was previously appointed by the CEO Bowman Hill to work closely with Dion. This arrangement was don
Felicia was always jealous of Thandi—the personal maid to Dion. She had ideas of him falling in love with her. It was common for billionaires to fall in love with their maids. Dion took Thandi everywhere he went. This was for professional reason, but Felicia did not believe so. She always wanted to get rid of Thandi—she just hadn’t figured out how to.“You went to see your father. Did you take off with her?”Disgusted by Felicia’s insinuation, Dion scoffed, “What?”“She’s pretty. You don’t pay attention to me. Do not be surprised by my insecurities.”“She may be what you say, but she’s not my standard. I don’t go for those.”Thandi was taken aback by Dion’s response. She had no romantic interest in Dion, but it did sting hearing what he said about her. Dion did not care, he had no filter at all. Liam did laugh at her, it was a mimed laughter and he
It was hurtful for Liam realise how Dion did not really care for his sickness. Dion was worried about how he would look keeping a ailing employee working. A tear fell from Liam’s eye. Dion did not care, “Go away, Liam.” Dion said, “Who knows? It could be contagious,” and he walked out of the room.Thandi joined Liam at the table. She received her make-up kit back from him, “I won’t be needing these anymore. He caught me.”“I am glad he did.” Thandi said, “I was getting worried, Liam. It’s not easy seeing my best friend play around with his life like that for some person who doesn’t deserve his sacrifice.”“Don’t hate him. He doesn’t know any better.” Liam had to promise Thandi that he would go home and focus on getting better. They hit fists and she ran out to get back to her work. She found the couple—Dion and Felicia—talking in the car
“Felicia! So, you steal from him? You father has the monies, why would you do any of that?!”“Tasha, relax. Dion has given me his cards to use as I like, so I have to get constructive. My dad won’t do anything for me anymore because I am too ‘lazy and dependant’ he says. Until I prove myself to be constructive, I am all alone. Tasha it’s tough out here. Luckily, my useless boyfriend has become useful now. I just need to act fast before he catches on. I’ve also ordered some cosmetics, I’m opening a salon, slash beauty shop.”……………………………………………………………………Dion was ticking off the delivery list. He was personally training the new operation manager. He was avoiding the mistake done by the former manager whom he had fi
The car finally, made a stop. It went with a loud screech of the wheels dragging on the concrete road. Dave was safe. The car did not even touch him. They all neared, and they saw him in his own blood. They rushed him to hospital.“Now, you see what you did? You see what you did, Dion?!” Felicia would not let him walk out on them at the hospital. He wanted to abandon all of them there. “You are so lucky that the boy lives. You could have had him killed, damnit!”The older brother sat on the bench waiting on the doctor to bring news that Dave was ready to see him now. He sat there, anxious and impatient.”The doctor finally came, “He’s not so bad. He fractured his right arm. It should repair in six weeks or so. And you may need to be very gentle with him, make sure he avoids sudden movements. He hit on his head very badly. He will experience severe headaches from time to time. Just make sure he eats all the necessary food
“You couldn’t help Mother Sonto, but at least help her,” said little Dave to his brother.“I’ll wait for her cries then.”Dion had pulled Felicia to the kitchen. “Dion! Dion, let go!”“What in the universe are those little creeps doing in my house!” he had let go of her arm. She was only glad she was free from his grip.“Dion—”“Don’t ‘Dion’ me, lady, just chase them out!”“You better not use that tone with me, boy! Where’s your respect?”“I do not want demons in my house. I cannot be sailing with demons on my ship!” he started making way out. Felicia knew where he was heading and what he wanted to do. He was going to chuck those kids out, himself. Felicia was not about to let that happen. She grasped on him, “Dion!”“Let go.”“Dion!”“I
Tressa Fourie submitted some files to Dion, “From our mailbox, sir.”“Can’t you see my hands are full? Put them there. Where is Grant Mulligan?”“Oh, you mean Mr. Mulligan, he’s taking few calls and he’ll be right here. Oh, there he is!” The man walked in and sat. He was the operation manager.“That is everything the entire house could come up with, summed up to one document.” Dion was handing him a file. The man was late to take it, Dion let it fall. The man had to bent to pick it up. “I want you to work closely with the administration department, and the marketing & sales department as well, to implement the changes and resolutions drafted in that document. I am putting you in charge of this development. You will draft me a new budget if the one in there does not correspond at a later stage and email it to me. I like to believe that I hired the most capable business minded people in to
Chapter 150“You… You’re alive?!” Mpumi couldn’t believe her own eyes.Ray was alive this whole. This was a man she had fallen in love with many years ago. Their relationship was a tumultuous one. It was on and it was off, it was good and it was toxic. Mpumi ended up getting so obsessed with this man. He was her first love after all.She had dated some guys before him but she never quite felt anything for any other man before Ray. She couldn’t understand her feelings, she was too young. They were both at Mpumi’s motel now. Mpumi was hesitant on letting him in but in the end she did. He sat at the small round table while she remained standing. She was still so frightened.“You stabbed me and then ran.” Ray continued, at the same time piercing a strict gaze into Mpumi’s eyes, “You left me there to die. I collapsed and laid on the pool of my own blood, I asked you to help me, but you r
Chapter 149Kefentse was the happiest man in his entire friend group. Things were working out for him and in his favour. He was taking over his father’s company. This was something he worked his entire life for. To be recognized by his father meant everything to him.“And now, you must bring us a wife.”“What?” Kefentse couldn’t believe the words of his father.“My son, you have just acquired a thrown. Now you must have an heir. With this much wealth and fortune, many vultures will come out of the woodworks to try to steal from you. Besides that, people are more likely to trust a man with a family. You are at an age to ground yourself.”Kefentse was still so struck with shock. He did not see that coming. His father went and on and on about his next plans for Kefentse’s life, “Ooh, I know a few girls around your age. All from respectable families. Say, we should set dates! ...”
Chapter148The kids were trying to find out who leaked a very private piece of information about Vincent’s father.“I don’t know.” Gift argued for himself, “The only reason I was beefing with Vincent back then was because I thought he would take you away from me. Other than that, I really have no problems with that kid. I was just jealous…”“You’re not jealous anymore?”“No. Ever since you claimed me, I really had no reason to be anymore.”Sphesihle was touched to hear that. In fact, she remembered the reasons why she liked him in the first place—he used to be so sweet. She could swoon over his sweet words but that was not the time, they had serious matters at their hands.Whoever leaked that news what in the school, because the first article to be released about the matter was published in that school’s news-site. They had to find out who did that.&
Chapter 147Bowman started weeping bitterly. Mpumi was only flustered, and at loss for words.“When he woke up, he wanted hurt himself again. The doctors had to strap him down and sedate him.”Bowman tumbled to his knees. “Please…”He crawled over to Mpumi’s feet.“Please, you have to help him. You have to watch over him—at least keep him alive for me!”Bowman was actually on his knees, grovelling for her help. Mpumi once thought that she wanted him to do that, but now that he was, she couldn’t stomach it. She saw the pain in that man’s eyes. He was a single father who was terrified of losing his son. His only child. She started trying to help him up but he was far too heavy to lift. He kept rubbing his palms together, and kept crawling to her as she was backing away from him.“Please. Please, little Miss. Please help my son.”He then grabbed and held on to her knees so that she wouldn’t back away anymore. All over his face were his tears and a very certain sadness.………A little whi
Chapter 146When morning came and Mpumi had to go home, since her shift was over, she remembered to go check on Dion first. She found him on the floor, unconscious and bleeding from his head. She called for help, and all the others rushed in and took him for an emergency care. Mpumi was worried, she couldn’t sit still as she waited for the results. Bowman and his family were at the hospital too, after receiving that early morning call. They too looked worried.Mpumi did find herself exchanging glances with Bowman. She wondered what that was about. She was able to go home when the doctors confirmed that Dion was okay. She could stay up and blame herself for what happened to Dion on her watch, but she was too tired and too sleepy.Mpumi quickly, slipped into her pyjamas (nightwear), and into her sheets—DING DONG!Came a doorbell at her door. She was tired. She simply scoffed, and then buried her head under her pillow. She was determined on ignoring that vividly loud doorbell.DING DONG
Chapter 145There was silence as Mpumi was thoroughly thinking about her decision. The Hill family had asked for her help to bring Dion back home. The ball was in Mpumi’s court. She then turned to Bowman, looked at him dead in the eye, “You fired me and then I left. I left your son and your darned company, so you can have all the control you wanted. As soon as I’m gone, your son goes missing? None of you knew where he was until I came along. I came back and I found him. You should be thanking me.”Mpumi continued, “In fact, you should be begging me to help you and your little precious son.”“I am begging you, Mpumi—”“Not you, Liam. I want Mr. Bowman Hill to beg me himself.”Bowman simply scoffed. He couldn’t believe the audacity of the girl. How dare she demand him to beg?“I see that proud smirk at the corner of your mouth, Mr. Bowman Hill.” Mpumi sa
Chapter 144At school, Gift was always happy to see Sphesihle. He would always beam and brightly so around her. He didn’t care if anyone saw him with her. Gift knew that he was the most admired kid in that school. His social value did not decrease on just being seen with Sphesihle—if anything, Sphesihle’s social value was more likely increase.“I get so excited to come to school nowadays,” he said smiling at Sphesihle. They were in class, first period. They spoke in low tones so that they wouldn’t make too much noise. That was allowed. This was their Life Orientation teacher, and she allowed socialization among pupils as long as they used their ‘inside voices’—as long as they were not too loud.“I get to hang out with you again.” Gift continued, “Remember how tight we used to be? And we were such a power couple.”Meanwhile, Sphesihle couldn’t shake off the uncomfort
Chapter 143Mpumi could see a clear view of his face. His front hairs were dangling at his forehead, overgrown and almost obscuring his sight. His beard was as long and tangled in what could soon turn into locks. As she looked closer, she saw his eyes sunken in and dark circles around them. She saw his cheeks all bones and protruding.Shocked! Mpumi’s throat was almost as dry as the sand in the Saharan Desert. Her tongue had never felt so heavy as she tried saying her first words upon seeing the man’s face. On her own face was the look of sheer terror!“DION??!!”He only looked into empty space and mimed what even he couldn’t make sense of. He seemed very far and lost. Mpumi got closer to have a closer look at his eyes.“Dion?”However, he looked lifeless almost as though there was no soul living in there. Mpumi could only wonder what happened to him. How he even got to that place, in the firs
Chapter 142The nurses did not succeed at collecting the patient’s DNA. The patient in room X1. He was aggressive and wouldn’t let any of them close to him. They couldn’t even take a photo of him. This would make it even harder to identify him. They needed to find his next of kin. They nurses were with the matron in her office. They were all brainstorming ideas on a way forward. The matron only went silent. She didn’t know what else to say. She was still thinking.“I think I can help him…” Mpumi had said. They turned to her, looked at her and wondered, “How do you think you can help? Not only is he mental but he’s also dangerous.”“I’ll take my own chances, but I think I have to try to get through to him.” Mpumi could clearly see that none of those people were convinced. She had to try harder. “Look, as you know that I’ve worked at a clinic before. I a
