Chapter 6
Ava's POV "Liam, please stop!" I shouted as I ran behind Liam, but he paid me no heed. Oh my God, my heart was nearly jumping out of my chest. What was this? And why was this happening to me now? I didn't need Liam to attack my family. I had only agreed to do what Mother had said because I knew that she would manipulate the situation in her favor. I would leave this house soon and then find a way to get back at them. But for now, I just wanted to obey them. I didn't expect Liam to get angry and try to attack them. "Liam, please stop!" I shouted, but it was almost too late. He was not listening, and he was getting really close to the door. I ran, my feet pounding against the tiled floor, but still, I was unable to stop Liam. He was too fast, and before I could even reach him, he had pushed open the big doors, separating the servants' quarters from the main house, causing them to bang loudly against the wall. The chatter that was being heard in the ballroom while we came died down, and all eyes turned to him. I rushed in behind him but halted when I saw the situation. Everyone was facing our direction and staring at him. I looked around, hoping that my dad was not there, and whispred a silent prayer of thanksgiving when I didn't see him. I just hope that he was asleep or something because he wasn't supposed to witness this. He couldn't find out the truth. I wouldn't live with myself if something happened to him because he did. "What the hell is going on here?" Natalia's shrill voice sounded as she walked in. "Liam, what do you think you are doing? You can't just barge in here in this manner. You are not even invited." Liam glared at her and said, "Where is your stupid and useless mother?" A loud gasp echoed through the hall, and everyone placed their hands against their mouths, some people's mouths dropping open.. I stood behind Liam, tension coiling in my stomach. What was he doing? My mother's voice rang out above the murmurs that were rippling through the crowd., "And what do you want me for, Liam?" All eyes turned to stare at her as she walked in with her head held high. She must have been in her room or something. "How dare you? How dare you disrespect my wife in front of me? I thought this thing was going to end now that I married Ava." My mother chuckled, shaking her head. "Oh, end? You have not seen the beginning of anything yet, boy. You still have a lot to learn." The guests were wondering what was happening. Not wanting to have her family name ruined any further, my mother turned to them. "Hey, everyone, the party is over. Please make your way to your homes now. Thank you for coming" The guests scattered; no one would want to annoy or offend the lady of the Patel family because they knew exactly what she could do to them. Which was why I was scared for Liam. Once the area was empty, my mother's face turned into a harsh glare. "What do you think you are doing, Liam? Who gave you the right to barge into a party in my home and disrespect me?" Liam stepped up to her face, his huge frame making him tower over her. "And who gave you the right to disrespect my wife in front of me?" The way Liam stood tall and imposing over her made my eyes widen. He looked intimidating, and I was glad I wasn't the one on his bad side. I think I saw mother gulp, but she quickly regained her composure and then crossed her arms over her chest while looking up at him. "You? Your wife? Her?" she scoffed, looking me up and down with disgust. "Well, I think this is perfect. I think Natalia and I have done you another great service. You two fit each other. A poor, ugly scum like you is a perfect match for a dirty, cursed animal like her." "Do not insult her!" Liam roared, making her flinch. My heart fluttered. Was he defending me? Oh my god, nobody has ever defended me. Uncle Bertram would have loved to, but I told him he needed his job, and so he always just held me in his arms while I cried after. Dad was never aware of anything, so he couldn't fight for me. Natalia stepped up. "Liam, do not speak to my mother in that way. She is right. You are just a filthy rag that we picked up and decided to help. If not for us, you would never even have had that nonsense thing you call a library that you're managing. So do not raise your voice at the hand that has fed you." Liam glanced at her from head to toe and said, "Oh, so it is the cheating, backstabbing and lying scum, who thinks she can speak to me in this manner?" Suddenly, a man I hadn't noticed before stepped forward. It was the man I had mistaken for Liam on the day of the engagement–Jim Dallas. "You will not speak to my wife in that manner, Liam. I don’t care who you are, but you are just something I can do away with if I want to." "Oh, really?" Liam mocked. He still had a solid two inches over Jim although Jim was more buff. “Yes." The two of them stood in a stare-off, the tension in the room so thick you could cut it with a knife and it still wouldn't break. Then, Liam raised his fist, and before any of us could react, he swung it hard against Jim Dallas's jaw. Jim Dallas was a big man, a buff guy. But the force of Liam's fist against his jaw sent him staggering backward onto the floor. Natalia shrieked, running towards him, while my mother’s glare intensified as she turned to Liam. "How dare you touch my son-in-law? Do you think everyone is as useless as you? You go around hitting my son-in-law, who is actually going to benefit my family more than you ever could in your life. How dare you?" The situation was tense and getting worse. With this amount of noise, I wouldn’t be surprised if Dad woke up and came here. Oh God, that would be the worst thing that could ever happen. He can't find out about all this. Liam looked down at her, laughed, and said nothing. Jim Dallas sat up, dazed., "How dare you hit me? Do you know what I can do to you with just a snap of my fingers? I will end your miserable existence." Liam laughed—a sinister sound that made the hair on my skin stand up. "I’d like to see you try that, Jim Dallas. You don’t know who you’re messing with." Jim Dallas rushed forward to hit Liam, but Liam caught his hand mid-air like it was nothing. My eyes widened, and so did Natalia's. Just what was going on here? Liam finally shrugged Jim Dallas off him. "If you all value yourselves, you will be careful. If you hurt my Ava again, I promise you, you’ll see a side of me you never knew existed. Don’t always judge a book by its cover—I am not who you think I am." The room was silent for some seconds before they all just burst out laughing, while I stood there wondering what exactly he meant. With that, he stomped off in the direction of our room, and I stood there like a deer caught in headlights. Three pairs of eyes, all masked with fury, turned to glare at me. Well shit!Chapter 7Ava’s POV“Ava, can you see what you’ve done?” Natalia’s voice rang out in the tense silence, full of anger and bitterness. “Look at what you and Liam did to my husband. I swear, I’ll make you both pay for this.”I rolled my eyes. “Natalia, maybe your husband wouldn’t have gotten involved if he’d let the argument stay between the people it actually concerned. And he's not a kid so stop crying.”She gasped, her eyes narrowing. “How dare you? He’s my husband, and he has every right to stand up for me however he wants! I’m going to make sure you and Liam regret this.”Her words usually sent a chill through my heart, but not this time. This time, I felt… nothing but calmness. I wonder why though.I looked back at her, my tone of voice steady “I got married today, and so did you. We’re all tired, and we need rest. Let’s keep this quiet. You know how Dad’s health is—I’m not sure he would appreciate any of this noise.”My mother gave me a cold stare, but rolled her eyes and turned
Liam's POVI paced back and forth in my office, frustration etched deeply on my face. How could Ava's family treat her so badly after everything she had been through? I couldn't let this continue. Jason, my personal assistant, watched me with a raised brow.“Boss, if I may ask, why did you marry Miss Ava?” he inquired.I turned to him sharply. “What do you mean? We were blackmailed.”He chuckled, shaking his head. “Never mind that. Liam, I'm your friend; I’m not going to call you boss during this conversation.”I rolled my eyes. “What is it, Jason?”“Liam, you’ve never faced a blackmail situation in your life. You could have destroyed those pictures the moment they surfaced. But you chose to marry Ava. What’s your plan?”I sighed, exasperated. “You know my plan. I’m not letting Ava go. Not now. And that family needs to suffer. I’ll make sure of it.”“Just be careful,” he warned. “We don’t want Ava getting hurt in the process, do we?”Just then, my father walked in. “Hey, my boys, wha
Ava's POVAs we walked through the living room, I spotted Natalia and her husband, Jim, getting ready to leave for their honeymoon. She looked us over with that smug, superior expression she always wore, raising an eyebrow as if she had something to say.“You know, Ava, marriage can be tough—especially when you don’t have… resources. But don’t worry, I’ll keep you two in my thoughts while we’re away.”“Natalia—” I started to speak, but Liam stepped in, giving Natalia a cold smile.“Thanks for the unwarranted input, Natalia. I’ll make sure we avoid the pitfalls of your kind of marriage. Don’t worry; you’ll soon start crying.”Natalia looked us up and down, smirking as if she knew something we didn’t. “You know, I was just telling Jim that it’s so tragic to start a marriage with nothing. I’m sure you’ll make it work for a month or two, though.” She smiled smugly. “Maybe Dad will lend you some money if you beg?”Liam clenched his jaw, but I squeezed his hand in warning, silently urging h
Chapter 10Ava's POVI was surprised when I saw Liam's home. Considering the fact that he was a librarian, I'd been expecting a small apartment on the other side of town, where the wealthy would never want to spend a second. However, he had a pretty big apartment. "Liam," I stammered, "not to be rude or anything, but how do you have such a big house?" I asked.Liam chuckled as he dropped my bags—he had insisted on carrying them—to the floor."Oh, Ava, you're so cute," came his reply, making butterflies erupt in my stomach as my face turned a bright shade of red.Why was I blushing when he didn't mean it that way? And why did I wish for him to say it again?A faint smile played on his plump lips, making his face brighter and his dimples so beautiful."My uncle used to live here, but since he got arrested, I moved in."I wanted to ask why his uncle had gotten arrested, but I knew we weren't close enough for me to ask something so personal."Want me to show you around?" he asked, his be
Chapter 11Ava's POVOnce I woke up from my dream, all the surroundings felt different. I spent the whole time avoiding Liam, with so many thoughts running through my head concerning our sudden wedding. And the dream. My face flushed anytime I thought about it, making Liam stare at me weirdly. When we arrived at his apartment, I exhaled. It was clear that his apartment was simple, yet it had a warm atmosphere to it—a nice sitting area, a tiny bathroom, a bedroom hidden far away, a small library filled with literature, and an office that seemed to be busy with activities. It wasn’t over the top, yet I had a feeling I was going to love it here.“Make yourself at home,” Liam said as he set our bags down. I smiled, relief washing over me as he took the couch without a word, and I appreciated that. The last thing I wanted was to spend the night beside him after the kind of dream I had.I had been feeling flustered anytime I was in his presence. I didn’t want to admit what was happening to
Chapter 12Ava's POVI had a lot of questions when Liam finally walked back inside. He seemed to be exhausted; there were deep bags under his eyes, and he still wore the same clothes from the previous night.Yet, despite the frustration, worry and curiosity were the strongest feelings that kept me going.“Liam, where have you been? You suddenly got up and left, and I was very worried,” I began, my tone almost accusatory. It was an effective way to communicate my anger and concern about the situation. He rubbed his eyes as if trying to erase the feeling of fatigue where it had settled. “I had something to attend to. Just work stuff” he said in terse manner which yet again dissatisfied me.I took a few steps toward him, staring into his eyes. “You keep saying this thing is work, but I will not accept it. You didn't come home the whole night Liam. I have a right to know what is happening.”His gaze turned cold and in an instant, he flew off the handle. “Ava, you are not my real wife, so
Chapter 13I woke up to the mouthwatering aroma of breakfast drifting in from the kitchen. Blinking against the morning light, I rubbed my eyes, trying to recall the events of last night. After everything that had happened—Liam being back and the argument we had—I wasn’t sure what today would be like between us. I expected things to feel tense, a little hostile even. But the delicious smell and the comforting warmth that filled the house eliminated that notion, replacing it with a small ray of hope. Finally, I dragged myself to the kitchen and stopped in my tracks, my eyes widening at the sight that greeted me. There, on the opposite side of the kitchen, was Liam—shirtless—flipping pancakes in a pan.I swallowed hard, my gaze involuntarily trailing along his toned back, his muscles moving with ease as he worked. The bright morning light filtered in from the window, making his skin almost glow. He looked... well, he looked like something out of a dream. I stared, barely blinking, and
Ava's POVA strangled cry tore from my throat as the shadows closed in, swallowing everything. The cars moving towards each other. The brakes refusing to work. It felt terrifyingly real, like the darkness was creeping over me, inch by inch, without mercy. I called out for help, my voice a desperate echo lost in the void, until suddenly, I heard my name. Familiar, calming, pulling me back."Ava!"“Ava, wake up! It’s just a bad dream.”The oppressive blackness started to fade, first slowly, then in a rush, like it had lost its grip. I shot up, gasping for air, my whole body trembling. Warm, strong arms wrapped around me, bringing me back to the safety of reality.“It’s alright. I’m here. You’re alright.”Liam’s face was right there, his soft eyes full of concern. He held me in his arms, even as I trembled in the aftermath. He wiped tears from my cheeks—tears I hadn’t even realized were there. “What happened?” he asked, his voice low, almost a whisper.“I—I’m sorry,” I stuttered, barel
Ava's POVMy heart raced as I waited for Domenico or Carlos to tell me what was going on. But they just stared at each other as if trying to figure out who should go first."Guys, come on," I groaned. "Just tell me. It can't be that bad, right? Unless you're scared that something will happen to me. Remember, I'm a strong girl. I can take it."Dom scoffed, and I glared at him. Carlos just shook his head at his brother's childishness in serious moments."So, Uncle Nathan, Liam's father, is the reason why everything is going on."My brows creased with confusion. "What do you mean? How is he the reason when he was welcoming you guys? If there was a problem, shouldn't he have been angry like Liam too?""Will you just shut up and listen?" Domenico interrupted me.I rolled my eyes at him but shut up still because it seemed like I was delaying it further."Our dad died when we were barely five. Remember when we told you?""Yes?""Liam's dad stepped in like a father figure to us. He took utmos
Ava's POVIf Liam thought I was going to listen to his stupid order, then he was really dumb and needed to get his brain checked. The minute he was out of the room, I shot up from the bed, wrapped my arms around my chest, and glared at the door as if I were glaring at his head. Then I quickly stood up, put on my flip-flops, and went out of the room.I was walking around the house aimlessly, trying to find where the twins' room could be. Finally, I realized that it would probably be upstairs, where I wasn’t supposed to go, but who cared at this moment?I called one of the maids who was passing by to set the table for dinner and asked her where their room was. She tried telling me that I couldn’t go there because it was upstairs, but I told her I would go, and no one would do anything about it.When we got to one of their rooms, I turned to her and told her to make sure Liam didn’t find out and that she shouldn’t tell him I was here unless he asked. She nodded and left. I took a deep b
Ava's POVThe moment I left Domenico's arms, Carlos' cedar and sandalwood scent hit my nostrils as he engulfed me in his own hug.Tears flowed freely down my face. I couldn't believe it. What are they even doing here?"What are you guys doing here?" I cried out, my voice muffled against his shirt.Domenico responded in a gentle voice, "I told you we were coming immediately after we got finished with our family meeting... well, this is our family."I froze, only now realizing that they were indeed standing in Liam's family home, which means..."Family? Wait, you guys are members of this family?""Yes, Ava. And we didn't know you were here," Carlos answered, stepping backward and placing his hands in his jeans.I stepped away from them and took my time scrutinizing their appearance. Only now seeing the resemblance between them and Mr. Blackwell. The only thing they shared with Liam was the blue eyes that dad also had. I guess they were his nephews then. Which means they were Liam's cou
Liam's POVAt the hospital, the doctor kept glancing at us weirdly. I think he noticed that something was wrong because Ava and I were always holding hands and acting all lovey-dovey. But today, she put her hands in her lap, impassive, while only smiling at the doctor. He didn’t probe, though, because it was none of his business. Couples fight all the time, and he wasn’t a counselor.“Mr. Blackwell, Mrs. Blackwell, you two look quite okay. But why is your face so pale? I think you’ve gone past the stage of morning sickness, or did you by any chance throw up again?”Ava shook her head. “No, Doc. I just didn’t sleep well last night, which is why my eyes are like this.”I felt a pang in my chest, my heart clenching as I realized that it was my fault. The doctor noted something down in his chart. “Okay then, you can lie on the bed now so I can check you.”My heart began racing with anticipation as it always did. Every time I saw my little baby, I got so nervous my palms would sweat. I did
Liam's POVI left the gym late in the evening. My knuckles were raw from all the punching I had done on the bag, trying to release the pent-up anger in me. But still, it remained, boiling in my veins. No, I wasn't angry at Ava. I was angry at myself for being such a fool. Why did I even have to tell her about Celeste's kiss?"You did the right thing, man," my subconscious said. But you did the wrong thing by telling her not to confront Celeste. You should have allowed her.My mind was torn. A part of me wanted to have allowed Ava to confront Celeste so that there would never be a repetition. But Celeste's family and my parents had always been friends, and I would not want anything to get rocky in their relationship because of a simple mistake, as Celeste had said it."Come on, Liam. Stop being a fool. You know that was no mistake. That girl fucking kissed you."I groaned, shaking my head from side to side to get rid of the annoying stream of thoughts arising from all directions.Going
Ava's POV"And who is going to bash my son's face into the wall?"I whirled around so fast I nearly lost my balance, causing my phone to fall out of my hand onto the grass below."Oh, shoot!" I cursed, picking it up and heaving a sigh of relief upon seeing it was fine, though the call had disconnected. Then I returned my gaze to the figure who had overheard my friends threatening his son's handsome face.Nathaniel Blackwell stood behind me, his arms crossed against his chest. His face was impassive as he watched me, displaying no emotion."So?" He arched a brow, referring to his earlier question."Uh, Dad, I... it's, uh... I... I, it's not... nothing... you should worry—"He broke out laughing, clutching his stomach while pointing at me.Nathaniel Blackwell was a child. I tell you. How was this man the leader of so many companies?"You should have seen your face. Oh my God, you looked like I held a gun to your head and was going to murder you. God, this is so hilarious. I should have
Ava's POVI bolted as fast as my seven-month pregnant body could carry me, ignoring Liam's panicked voice calling my name. My hands were balled into fists, and I strode like a woman with the purpose of destroying someone who had dared to take what belonged to me.Just as I got to the stairs, which the family had advised me against climbing because of my pregnancy—Celeste's room was on the third floor while Liam's and mine were on the second—Liam’s wrist shot out to grab mine, turning me to face him. I could hear footsteps in the distance—Mum and Dad were rushing in."Baby, please.""Liam, let go of me. I am going to teach that girl a lesson. I have had it with her.""Please, come on, honey. I knew I shouldn’t have told you this," he whispered to himself.I stared at him, dumbfounded, my mouth dropping open. "Oh, so you should have kept it a secret from your wife that you got kissed by your so-called best friend? What the hell, Liam?""Hey, hey, Ava, please," Liam whispered, his voice
Ava's POVCeleste had been getting on my nerves the whole time she was here, and I was just a few more snide remarks away from snapping. And I mean it—do not mess with a heavily pregnant woman like me.Just a few days after her so-called injury, she kept sitting around claiming she was bored and needed company at home. I wasn't mad about Liam skipping work to stay with her—no. I was mad about the fact that I had to stay home as well since he wasn’t going into work that day. For whose sake?I smiled as I thought about the only thing that kept me sane these days—the Hendrix twins, the boys who had been the reason for my happiness back at the dormitory—Carlos and Dominico Hendrix.I met them just a few years after I had left. They had come to the dormitory for school and had stayed longer than they needed to because Dominico—the loud and dumb one—had said, “I’m not leaving my sister in this disgusting place. I’ll stay here and fail classes until she graduates so that we can leave togethe
Liam's POVOkay, something is seriously wrong, I thought as I stood in my spot, staring at Ava as she braided Alicia's hair while they sat on the soft grass, facing the green lake, which extended far into the distance.Ava has been behaving weirdly these past few days, like she was avoiding me. My thoughts raced. Could I have done something without knowing? Why would she be avoiding me?It had been a week since Celeste had moved in, and while it had been fun hanging out with her, I couldn't shake off the fact that Ava wasn't herself.Yes, we did spend the night together on the same bed, but it seemed like once we were out of the room, everything changed. I needed to find out if she was really avoiding me or if it was just me being paranoid for nothing. With that thought in mind, I started strolling towards where she sat, humming and talking with Alicia. Mom and Dad were by the barbecue stand, trying to fix it up for the get-together they had planned for the evening. The rest of the fa
