Chapter Forty-One

Her face was red and her eyes swollen. Seeing me, she quickly tried to wipe off the tears and adjusted her hair.
Trying to smile at her, I said, “Hi, are you okay? I just wanted to talk to you.”
Madeleine gave me a hesitant smile and opened the door for me. “Yeah, please come.”
She turned around to walk inside and plopped herself on the bed. Her hands were intertwined and she was twiddling her fingers.
I looked at her again and tried to ask, “So, something happened today? Or maybe just an hour ago?”
Hearing my voice, she nearly jumped as if trying to understand what I was doing in her room. She was way too distracted and tense.
I walked near her and sat on the bed beside her, “it's okay. Please relax; Hayden won’t be harsh on you.”
I had aimed to calm her down but hearing Hayden’s name only made her sob harder.

Raine As if on cue, he spoke in a resigned voice, “Madeleine was caught red-handed in my office, trying to spy on me and give away confidential information to her alpha, Garron. She says he is forcing her to do that but she has no proof. And, with Charlie around I couldn’t do anything.” “Oh,” I added in a thoughtful voice. Now, I knew why he was feeling so low. Upon hearing Garron’s name I stiffened for a moment but I decided to not show it to my brother. “Well, then did you ask her to appear in front of the jury?” Hayden simply nodded his head, “Yes, and as per the rules I gave her twenty-four hours but I really don’t know how she would prove it.” I sat there with my chin placed on my hand thoughtfully. There must be a way to sort this mess. Several thoughts began to churn in my head as I tried to find the best way out of it. And, I decided something without letting my brother know.

Epilogue (A month after the gruesome battle) Soft afternoon light spilled into the room where Madeleine was sleeping. The curtains rustled in the soft wind as she turned from side to side on the bed. For a month after the epic battle between her and the demon, she had been having nightmares.
