Elijah’s POV

I could see my stepmother smiling, talking to a couple of regulars at the counter in her cafe. Business had become much better lately, and for the first time in weeks, she looked genuinely happy. It seemed as if the chaos of the past few months had been nothing but a bad dream.

I glanced at my watch. The investigator I’d recommended—Detective Marcus—was due to arrive any moment. He’d personally called me and mentioned new leads on the vandalism and threats against Morgana and Lila, promising that this time, we’d finally get somewhere.

I looked over at Morgana. Her genuine smile was a rare sight these days, and despite everything, it was a relief to see her like this. Yet, the faint strain in our dynamic was impossible to overlook.

She hadn’t entirely forgiven me for investigating Lennon. The look of betrayal on her face when she caught me in my study weeks ago still lingered in my mind. But for all her anger, she hadn’t shut me out completely. She’d allowed me to continu

Elijah’s POVDetective Marcus and I met the vendor in a discreet corner of the back room. The man glanced nervously between us as Marcus explained the plan.“You’re going to approach your contact,” Marcus told him firmly. “Tell them there’s an opportunity tonight—something disruptive, something damaging. Be clear, but not pushy. If they bite, we’ll catch them red-handed.”The vendor nodded, swallowing hard. “Alright. What do you want me to suggest?”“Target the performance,” I said, crossing my arms. “Lila’s scheduled to sing tonight. Make it sound like ruining her set would humiliate Morgana and damage the café’s reputation. It’s the kind of petty, public sabotage this person seems to thrive on.”The vendor shifted uncomfortably. “And you’re sure I’ll be safe?”“You’ll be wired,” Marcus assured him, holding up a small device. “We’ll monitor everything, and my team will be close by. As soon as we have what we need, you’re out.”I stepped forward, fixing the vendor with a hard stare. “

Elijah’s POVThe café had transformed under the warm glow of evening lights, its usual charm elevated by strings of delicate fairy lights and subtle touches of elegance. Tables were arranged to face a small stage near the window, where a sleek microphone and a guitar stand hinted at the night’s entertainment. Lila stood nearby, radiant in a flowing dress, her hand entwined with Adrian’s. Their closeness was unmistakable, their easy smiles a reflection of the love they now shared.I leaned against the counter, nursing a glass of sparkling water, and watched as they chatted with Morgana. Adrian was gesturing animatedly, and Lila laughed, leaning into his shoulder. Their new album launch was clearly more than just a career milestone—it was a celebration of their partnership. The sound of the door opening drew my attention. My grip on the glass tightened as Camille stepped inside, her heels clicking against the tiled floor. She was dressed to impress, her bold red dress catching the light

Emily’s POVThe worn leather journal felt heavier in my hands than it should have, its frayed edges brushing against my fingertips as I clutched it tightly. Every step I took on the narrow mountain trail seemed to amplify the weight of it, as if it held not just pages of memories, but the crushing reality of the life Chris and I now led, lived before by someone else. The peaks of Mercantour National Park loomed ahead, their jagged edges shrouded in mist. Chris walked a few steps in front of me, his head turning every so often to scan the trail behind us."Do you think this place will be safe?" I asked. Chris slowed his pace, waiting for me to catch up. He didn’t answer right away. Instead, he adjusted the strap of his backpack and glanced at me, his face unreadable. “It’s secluded. Hard to find, even harder to reach. That’s something.”Not exactly comforting. “But for how long?” I pressed. “How long until they find us again?”Chris’s jaw tightened, the tension in his shoulders makin

Chris’s POVThe worn chair creaked as I leaned back, staring at the wooden beams of the ceiling. My thoughts wandered to my family—my parents, my siblings, even the small details of home life I’d taken for granted. I missed it all, a dull ache eating at me every time I let myself think about it.But I couldn’t risk going back. Not yet. Not with the mob hunting us, and certainly not with Emily relying on me. I couldn’t leave her alone in this, no matter how much I longed for my old life.I sighed, running a hand through my hair and willing myself to accept my fate. This was the path I’d chosen, the one I’d forced myself to stay on because protecting Emily mattered more than anything else. And besides, I’d never loved anyone as much as I loved her. That truth was the only anchor I had in this chaos. The sound of the front door opening snapped me out of my thoughts. The woman who owned the house—a wiry, sharp-eyed local named Henriette—poked her head in. “Marc and Luc are here,” she anno

Emily’s POVThe forest was alive with chaos. My legs burned as I pushed through the underbrush, the sound of crashing branches and angry shouts growing louder behind me. Chris was just ahead, his silhouette barely visible in the faint moonlight cutting through the dense canopy.“We’re almost there,” he whispered back to me with urgency. “Just keep moving.”I nodded, but my breath came in short, panicked gasps. My mind was a whirlwind, replaying the flashes of violence, the sound of gunfire, and Luc shouting at us to separate. It was difficult to focus, but I just kept on moving forward. Ahead, the trail split in two. Chris glanced back at me, his face lined with worry. “Take the left path! I’ll hold them off.”“No, Chris—” I began, my chest tightening with panic, but he didn’t wait for an argument. Spinning on his heel, he moved toward the right trail, gripping a sturdy branch he’d grabbed earlier as if preparing for a fight. The determination in his stance was unmistakable.“Go, Emi

Sophia’s POV“This is where she works?” Jared asked in awe, looking around Emily’s fashion boutique and studio. Last night, I dreamed of Emily. The memory stayed with me through the morning, compelling me to take Jared to her studio today. I wanted him to see her world, to connect with the pieces of his mother’s life, and perhaps, in the process, learn more about the woman who had given him life.“Yes, sweetie,” I said, kneeling beside him and pointing to a mannequin draped in a half-finished gown. “Your mom spent hours here, creating beautiful designs. She always said fashion was her way of telling a story without words.”Jared tilted his head, studying the unfinished dress. “Did she make this one for someone special?”A lump formed in my throat. “Maybe,” I whispered. “She had so many dreams... and you were always her biggest one.” I guided him to a small table near the sewing area. I pulled out a box filled with swatches of fabric and colorful buttons, things Emily had once used t

Sophia’s POVThe sight of Phoebe standing in the doorway took my breath away. She looked so different from the last time I’d seen her—thinner, her cheekbones more pronounced, her posture subdued. But her eyes, wide and shimmering with unshed tears, carried a familiar depth of emotion that struck me instantly. Before I could speak, she stepped forward and wrapped both Kayla and me in a tight embrace.“Phoebe,” I murmured, still stunned. “You’re here.”Her hug felt prolonged, as if she were drawing strength from it. When she pulled back, her hands rested firmly on my arms, her smile wavering slightly. “I couldn’t stay away any longer,” she said, her voice soft but laden with feeling. “I needed to see you.”“We’ve missed you so much,” Kayla said, adjusting Asha on her hip. Asha reached out with a tiny hand, patting Phoebe’s cheek, as if sensing the tension in the air. Kayla smiled gently, her tone as soothing as always. “How have you been?”Phoebe hesitated, brushing a tear from her chee

Sophia’s POV“Lucas,” I called out, stepping onto the cobblestone path that led to the resort’s grand, albeit faded, entrance. “You’ve got a prime location here.”He emerged from the double doors, his familiar grin warm against the chilly mountain air. “Sophia, welcome. How was the drive up?”“Long,” I admitted, adjusting my scarf as the wind tugged at it. I was bundled up in a navy wool coat, a pair of tan ankle boots, and a thick cream-colored knit scarf. The frosty air bit at my cheeks, and I shoved my gloved hands into my coat pockets for warmth. “But worth it. This place…” I gestured to the sprawling ski resort behind him, its old-world charm dulled by time and neglect. “It’s stunning. Or at least, it has the bones to be.”Lucas chuckled, his gaze lingering on me. “That’s why you’re here. To make it amazing again.”As I stepped closer, I caught the faint scent of pine and woodsmoke clinging to the air, mingling with the crispness of the snow-dusted ground. For a brief moment, the

Elijah’s POVThe house felt like it was holding its breath. Morgana’s sobs broke the silence occasionally, raw and gut-wrenching, as Lila and Adrian hovered near her, offering words of comfort that felt paper-thin in the face of her grief. Morgana sat slumped on the couch, her face buried in her hands, while Lila rubbed soothing circles on her back and Adrian paced, his expression dark with worry. In the corner of the room, Kayla and Sophia sat close together, their heads bowed in hushed conversation. Whatever they were saying, it seemed to offer Sophia a sliver of solace, though her eyes darted toward me every now and then, filled with the same lingering apprehension I felt. She looked pale, her shoulders drawn tight as if she were holding herself together by sheer willpower. An hour had crawled by since the explosion. An hour of unanswered questions and unanswered calls. Connor and I had tried every line, every contact, but no one from Joe’s side had picked up. Each failed attempt f

Sophia’s POVThe air thrummed with a tension so thick it felt alive, no matter how hard we all tried to mask it. Morgana’s living room was warm and inviting, as always, but even the crackling fireplace couldn’t chase away the chill of unease that had settled over us. I sat on the edge of the plush sofa, my hands gripping a mug of tea that had long since gone cold.Across from me, Elijah leaned forward in his chair, elbows on his knees, his gaze fixed on the carpet as though it held the answers we were all waiting for. Lila and Adrian were perched on the loveseat, talking in low voices, though their words seemed more like an effort to fill the silence than an actual conversation. Connor stood by the window, staring out into the sprawling garden, while Kayla hovered near the kitchen, pretending to busy herself with the cheese platter she'd brought.Morgana herself sat quietly. As always, her eyes were red and puffy, her face haggard, and she had grown noticeably thinner.I took a deep b

Elijah’s POVIt was one of those days when the weight of the world seemed to rest on my shoulders. My office at Sinclair Realty was awash with sunlight streaming through the floor-to-ceiling windows, but the brightness did little to alleviate the turmoil brewing in my thoughts. Connor, my ever-efficient assistant, sat across from me, tablet in hand, as we combed through the final details of the new condo project. "The eco-friendly features are going to be the highlight," Connor was saying. "Solar panels, water recycling—it's all here. If we market it right, we'll tap into that green investor demographic."Just as Connor began discussing potential investors, my phone buzzed on the desk. Joe’s name lit up the screen. Joe rarely called—and never during office hours unless it was urgent."Give me a minute," I told Connor, picking up the phone. "Joe, what is it?""Elijah, turn on the news. Now."There was an urgency in his voice that made my stomach tighten. "What’s going on?""Just do it

Sophia’s POVI leaned over my desk, the soft glow of the desk lamp spilling over my sketches. The lines were clean, precise, but my mind wasn’t. I’d been at this all day, refining designs for Lucas’s ski resort renovations. Thankfully, it had been days since I’d last heard from him. That alone brought a sense of relief. I wasn’t sure if it was because of our last encounter or he’s just been busy. As I worked on shading the next section of my blueprint, my phone buzzed against the desk. I glanced at it, surprised to see Elijah’s name flashing on the screen. A small smile tugged at my lips as I answered.“Hi,” I said, cradling the phone between my ear and shoulder as I continued sketching.“Hey,” Elijah’s warm voice greeted me. “I just wanted to ask… what time are you coming home?”I paused, setting my pencil down. “In a bit. Just wrapping up a few things.”“Good,” he said, a faint smile audible in his tone. “I miss you.”The words caught me off guard. A rush of warmth spread through m

Elijah’s POVThe morning sunlight filtered through the tall windows of my office, but it did little to lift the cloud hanging over me. I leaned back in my chair, staring at the reports spread across my desk, though my mind wasn’t focused on them. Victoria’s sudden disappearance had thrown me off balance.A part of me wanted to breathe a sigh of relief. If she was gone, it meant she couldn’t interfere with my family anymore—or so I hoped. I don’t know her too well. But I know Julia, and won’t just give up. If using Victoria didn’t work, she’ll find another way soon. The phone on my desk buzzed, snapping me out of my thoughts. My assistant’s voice came through the intercom. “Mr. Sinclair, Joe is here to see you.”“Send him in,” I said, sitting up straighter.Moments later, Joe stepped into the room, carrying a folder and his usual air of quiet efficiency. He placed the folder on my desk and sat across from me, his expression grim.“I’ve got updates,” he began, pulling a few papers fro

Sophia’s POVWe always tried to set aside our concerns whenever we got together for meals at home with the kids. Tonight’s dinner turned out to be lively, especially because we’d invited Phoebe to join. Jared was animated, recounting his favorite parts of the school performance to Phoebe, who listened with rapt attention. It was sweet to see the bond forming between them—Jared had taken to her so naturally, as though some invisible thread tied them together.“I’m sorry I couldn’t make it to the show,” Phoebe said, her tone genuinely regretful. She reached over to ruffle Jared’s hair. “Work’s been hectic, and I just couldn’t leave my new job.”Jared shrugged, smiling at her. “It’s okay, Aunt Phoebe. There’ll be more performances. You can come next time.”“I wouldn’t miss it for the world,” Phoebe promised, her eyes softening.Roxy, who had been unusually quiet throughout dinner, suddenly spoke up. “Royce wasn’t in school today.”I paused mid-bite, glancing at Elijah. He stilled too, h

Elijah’s POVDespite Morgana’s absence, Bella Sera was bustling with activity when I arrived. The place seemed to be running like a well-oiled machine. Clara, Morgana’s assistant, was standing by the counter, speaking animatedly with one of the chefs.I made my way to her, and she noticed me immediately. “Elijah,” she said with a smile. “Good to see you. Morgana mentioned you might stop by.”“How’s everything going?” I asked, leaning against the counter.Clara handed me a clipboard with the latest reports. “Sales have been steady. We’ve introduced a few new menu items, and they’re doing really well. Customers seem to love the seasonal specials. Morgana’s been signing off on everything remotely, but honestly, she’s been distant. Understandably so.”I nodded, flipping through the reports. The numbers looked solid. “You’re doing great, Clara. Morgana will appreciate this.”Clara gave me a grateful smile, but before she could respond, I felt a hand on my arm—a touch too familiar. I turne

His eyes met mine briefly before shifting to Lila, softening with concern.“Hey, Sophia,” he greeted warmly. “Glad to know you’re here.”Before I could respond, Lila let out a soft cry and threw her arms around him. Adrian caught her effortlessly, wrapping her in a tight embrace. Her shoulders shook as she buried her face into his chest, and he murmured something soothing into her hair.“It’s good you showed up,” I said gently, stepping back to give them space. “You’re just what she needs right now.”Adrian led Lila inside, still holding her close. She clung to him as though he were a lifeline, her earlier composure crumbling into quiet sobs. It was clear that th

But we’ll get through to her.”I nodded, staring out at the rain-speckled window. “She’s always been so strong. A fighter, you know? It’s hard to imagine her like this.”“She’s human,” Elijah said with understanding and concern. “Even the strongest people have their breaking points.”For a moment, we were quiet again. Then my mind drifted back to the preschool show we had recently attended, to the moment Victoria had dropped that prison visitor’s log.“Elijah,” I began, my tone tentative.“Hmm?” he murmured, glancing at me briefly before focusing back on the road.“I didn’t tell you everything about what happened at the preschool.”His eyebrows furrowed slightly. “Go on.”“Victoria d
