Emily’s POV

Chris froze, his eyes darting between me and Phoebe, panic etched into his features. “Phoebe!” he shouted, but she was already trapped beneath the rubble, writhing in pain, her hands desperately trying to push the boulder off her legs.

“It’s... it’s bad,” she groaned, her voice trembling. “Chris, get her out of here. Just—just go! You can’t stay. Get Emily to safety!”

“No!” I croaked, my own panic rising. I struggled against Chris’s arms, trying to get him to put me down. “We can’t leave her! Chris, help her, please!”

Chris looked torn, his eyes flicking between us, unsure of what to do. His face was set in determination, but there was something breaking in his gaze. He didn’t want to abandon either of us.

Phoebe, wincing through the pain, gasped, “Just go without me... please, I’ll slow you down. You can come back for me. Or... call Joe, tell him to send someone.”

I was crying now, openly, my body trembling with sobs. I couldn’t lose her—not now, not after everything we’d

Sophia’s POVThe sound of breaking glass echoed in the small kitchen, shattering my moment of calm like the milk slipping from my fingers. I gasped as I stared at the puddle spreading across the floor, the white liquid pooling around the shards of broken glass.the unmistakable sound of Jared’s wailing broke through the silence. I turned toward the nursery, my heart sinking further. A moment later, Roxy joined in, her cries rising in pitch, two little voices that tugged at my heartstrings.“Okay, okay!” I said to myself, forcing my feet to move. I hurried toward their cribs, my heart pounding in my chest. This wasn’t how I imagined my day would go, but with Elijah at that emergency meeting and Reese at school, I was left alone to take care of the babies. The nanny wasn’t available today either. As I entered the nursery, I was met with the sight of both babies, their faces red and scrunched up in distress. I quickly reached for Roxy first, lifting her from her crib and cradling her cl

Sophia’s POVI had no idea that it was going to be the last time I would hear from Emily. And that I would never see my brother Chris again too. Three months had passed since I last heard Emily's voice, and the silence stretched between us like an unbridgeable chasm. Chris and Emily were still missing, and with each day that went by, the weight of that absence pressed heavier on my chest. Then I thought about Phoebe, who was stuck in Paris, trying to get well and to live a normal life again. I knew she was working hard in therapy, but I couldn’t shake the image of her sitting in that wheelchair. I felt so helpless being thousands of miles away.Suddenly, Jared cried out. It was as if he’d been able to sense that his mother and aunt had not been around for a long time now. I hurried to him, lifting him from the crib and cradling him close. “Shh, baby, it’s okay,” I murmured, trying to calm him. But even as I rocked him, my mind was elsewhere. I sat down on the sofa with Jared, who sq

Elijah’s POVI sat on the living room floor, surrounded by scattered toys and soft blankets, watching Jared wobble over to me with a big, toothy grin. His little hands grabbed at my shirt, pulling himself closer as I reached out to steady him. His laugh was infectious, and for a moment, I forgot all about my worries. "Good job, buddy," I said, ruffling his soft hair as he babbled something only he could understand.Roxy was fast asleep in the nursery, and thankfully, the new nanny was here to help. With Sophia rushing to the office to handle some urgent project issues, I was left in charge for the day. But it wasn’t just the responsibility that had me thinking—it was Jared. The kid had grown so much in the months we’d been caring for him. Nearly two years old now, he’d already started picking up new words, mimicking sounds, and toddling around like he owned the place. But as I looked into his bright, innocent eyes, I couldn’t help but feel a pang of sadness. He probably didn’t even r

Sophia’s POVThe next few days passed quietly. Jared and Roxy filled the house with their playful energy, and watching them always lifted my mood. But every now and then, my thoughts would drift back to the conversation I’d had with Antoine recently. Antoine had sounded… lost. Like a man who had given up on everything, including himself. I had approached the topic of adoption carefully, expecting resistance, guilt, maybe even anger. But what I got was the exact opposite.“If Emily’s missing and she left Jared with you, it means she trusts you to take care of him. I trust you both too, Elijah and Sophia. You’ll give him the best possible life,” Antoine had said with an eerie calmness. “I can’t do that for him from here. I’m not capable of giving him a good life. So go ahead with your plans.”The ease with which he agreed had caught me off guard. I knew Antoine had always been a complicated man, but hearing his resignation, his total acceptance that Jared wasn’t coming back to him… it

Sophia’s POVElijah, what do you mean followed?” I asked, my heart pounding. But before he could answer, I was distracted by the ringing of my phone. It was my best friend Kayla who was scheduled to give birth any time now. I hesitated for a second, still focused on Elijah, but then I answered. “Hey, Kayla. What’s up?”“I’m about to give birth!” Kayla’s voice blurted out, a mixture of excitement and panic.I blinked, trying to process her words. “What?! Like right now?”In the background, I could hear Connor frantically moving around, his voice strained. “Come on, Kayla, I’ll get you in the car. Lean on me… Let’s go…” “Oh, no… Oh, no,” Kayla’s voice wavered, and suddenly it dropped. “Sophia, my water just broke. Oh, shit, I have to go!” The line went dead before I could respond.I stared at the phone in shock for a moment, Kayla’s panicked voice still ringing in my ears. My worry about Elijah’s words took a backseat to the sudden urgency of Kayla’s situation.I looked up at him, my

Elijah’s POVI couldn’t stand still, pacing a line into the carpet near the desk, my fists clenching and unclenching. Each step, each turn, only wound the tension in me tighter.Connor was on leave, and I was stuck here with his replacement—a sharp enough guy, thankfully, but new to the Sinclair way of doing things. His name was Jason, and I’d forced myself to be patient with him these past days, given the circumstances. But this—this was no ordinary setback. This was a disaster unfolding in real-time.“Alright,” I muttered, stopping for a second to face him, my eyes catching his as he sat at his desk, peering over a spread of files and emails. “You’ve got a list of the companies that cancelled? Any explanations besides the standard brush-offs?”Jason nodded, flipping through his notes. “I called each one. Spoke to the reps directly. It was the same story every time—‘sudden concerns’ about Sinclair Realty's recent projects.” He looked up at me, hesitant, then pushed on. “They’ve heard

Elijah’s POVThe week had passed in a whirlwind of tense meetings, late nights, and endless phone calls. The Inspectorate had started their investigation, combing through our records and sites with meticulous precision. So far, there were no red flags, no violations or irregularities detected. But the silence only heightened my anxiety. I’d spent every waking hour pouring over documents, checking our properties myself, combing through reports, blueprints, compliance records—anything to get ahead of this impending disaster. The board members had voiced their growing unease; they expected solutions, something concrete to reassure our investors and partners, something I couldn’t yet deliver. Every conversation seemed to end with the same, silent question: What are you going to do, Elijah Sinclair? My mind kept cycling through strategies, but the stark reality was unavoidable. We’d need an extraordinary amount of cash to steady this ship: our own independent inspections, marketing to res

He sounded bright, relaxed, and genuinely interested in catching up.“Sophia! How are you? I can’t wait to meet little Jared—finally!” he laughed. “When are you bringing him over?”My heart warmed at the mention of Jared, and we chatted for a few minutes about his latest milestones. Adrian asked about everything from how I’d been handling the new-mom sleep deprivation to Jared’s budding personality, a tone of eager unclely pride in his voice. It was refreshing to hear, and I found myself laughing, the tension in the room easing—if only for a moment. But then, something he’d said during our last conversation suddenly came back to me, igniting a sense of hope. Adrian had mentioned he was looking to grow his money. He’d even joked about how everyone seemed to have more business sense than he did, how he wanted a stable investment he could rely on for years to co

Sophia’s POVA hush of golden light slipped through the curtains, draping the room in warmth and calm. It felt like the kind of morning that only came after surviving the storm.Weeks had passed since the chaos faded, and for once, the quiet didn’t feel temporary—it felt earned. I stirred slowly, eyes drifting open to find Elijah beside me, his hand resting lightly over mine. I studied him in the silence, taking in the softened edges of a man who’d carried us through fire and finally found peace.I leaned over and pressed a kiss to his cheek. His eyes fluttered open, and when they focused on me, he smiled sleepily."Morning," he murmured."Morning," I whispered back, letting my fingers trace the line of his jaw. "Can you believe we actually get to wake up like this? No chaos, no danger—just us."He pulled me closer and kissed my forehead. "I could get used to this."Just as I was about to say something, the door burst open."Mommy! Daddy!" Reese called out, followed quickly by Roxy an

Elijah’s POVWe weaved through the cracked streets, deeper into a part of the city that felt like time had forgotten it. Boarded-up windows, rusted signage, buildings collapsing in on themselves. This was the kind of place where ghosts lingered, and today, we were chasing one of them."We’re close," Joe muttered from the front seat, his eyes scanning the GPS on his phone. "This is the last possible location that fits Hugo's hideouts."Antoine sat beside me in the back, silent but focused. His jaw was tight, hands clenched. I still didn’t know if I fully trusted him, but I couldn’t deny this: he was here, risking his neck like the rest of us. And right now, I’d take any edge we could get.I have to find Grandpa George. For Sophia. When we pulled up to the burned-out remains of what once looked like a chapel, a chill shot down my spine. The stone structure still stood, half-charred, the wooden beams above blackened and skeletal. Nature had tried to reclaim it—vines curling around scorch

I couldn’t.Joe and his men fanned out behind me, covering corners, checking every room.We were running out of time. Then—A scream. My heart nearly stopped. It was her.I charged forward, slamming my shoulder into the door at the end of the hall. It burst open—and I saw red.Morgana was on the ground, gasping for air as Hugo’s hand squeezed her throat, and across the room, Sophia was trying to drag herself toward them, her face pale and streaked with tears.“NO!” I shouted, and without hesitation, I raised my gun.Hugo turned just as I fired. The bullet tore through his shoulder. He howled, stumbling back and releasing Morgana, who crumpled to the floor, coughing violently.I crossed the room in three strides and tackled Hugo before he could

Sophia’s POVThe first thing I felt was cold.A biting chill that wrapped around my arms and legs like a second set of restraints. Then came the pressure—tight, scratchy ropes cutting into my wrists. My head pounded like a drum, fog thick behind my eyes. Everything smelled like mildew and dust.My eyes struggled to make sense of the shadows. The room was dim, lit only by a weak bulb overhead that flickered like it couldn’t decide if it wanted to stay on. I was on a metal chair, hands tied behind my back, ankles secured to the legs. The air tasted stale and old, like the walls had been sealed off from the world for decades.Panic bloomed in my chest. My brother Chris. What had become of him?I jerked forward, straining against the ropes. “Chris!” I called, my voice hoarse and raw. “Where is he?!”I noticed some movement in the darkness. A shadow stirred in the corner of the room. I froze as a figure stepped out into the light. Tall. Gray-streaked beard. Sunken eyes like old coals. A d

Sophia’s POV“This is insane,” Elijah muttered, rubbing a hand over his face. “We’re relying on Antoine to lead us to Hugo. Does no one else see how crazy that is?”Joe, who had been checking messages on his phone, barely looked up. “We don’t have another choice.”I watched Elijah pace the room, his frustration clear. He wasn’t wrong, but I knew that if there was even the smallest chance of finding Grandpa George, we had to take it.Joe sighed and turned to Antoine. “You sure you can make him bite?”Antoine shrugged. “I know Hugo. He’s a cockroach—he won’t go down without a fight. But if he thinks his last hiding spot is compromised, he’ll make a move. That’s when we strike.”Elijah muttered something under his breath, but I didn’t catch it. Joe’s phone buzzed. As he studied the screen, he said, “We got something. Two possible locations.”Elijah straightened. “Then let’s move.”They all hurried out, and I had the sudden, overwhelming urge to call Elijah back—to make sure he’d pick up

Anyone suspicious? A car, a stranger?”Her red-rimmed eyes filled with fresh tears as she shook her head. “No… nothing. I don’t know how this happened.” Her voice broke. “George was just in his study… and then he was gone.”Elijah placed a hand on my shoulder, grounding me, but I could feel the rage simmering beneath his calm exterior. Why?!My hands instinctively balled up as my heart slammed against my ribs. Could this really be the same man?Hugo’s expression darkened with satisfaction as he took another step, exuding an air of quiet arrogance.“Well, well,” he drawled, his voice smooth but laced with something sinister. “You’re not as fun outside of prison, Antoine.”Phoebe’s grip on my wrist tightened. “Emily, let’s go,” she muttered under her breath.I wanted to. Even as Antoine stood in front of me, blocking my way, I forced my body to stay still, to stay firm.I squared my shoulders, my fingers curling into fists at my sides. “Move.”Antoine didn’t budge. His gaze shifted between me and Phoebe, like he wasn’t sure if I’d actually listen or turn and run.“I’m not here to fight,” he said, his voice calm. “I just want to talk.”Phoebe’s grip on my arm tightened, and her anger was immediate, sharp.“Oh, hell no,” she snapped. “What are you even doing here? Haven’t you caused enough trouble?”I inhaled slowly, forcing myself to stay calm. I wasn’t going to let him see me feeling nervous or affected by him. Antoine exhaled, his face unreadable. “I just wanted to talk.”Phoebe laughed coldly. “Talk? You took Jared, Antoine. Without permission. Do you have any idea what you put us through?”“I know,” he admitted. “I made a mistake.”Phoebe scoffed. “A mistake?”I stepped forward, my gaze hardening. “Please, Antoine.
