Sophia’s POV

I nearly screamed into the phone, “You didn’t tell me about Connor, and I find out from the internet?! What kind of best friend are you?!”

Kayla's laughter rang out on the other end. “Sorry, sorry!” she said between giggles. “I’m coming over. We have a lot to talk about.”

“I’ll hold you to that,” I replied, a wide grin spreading across my face. I was eager to see her. She sounded happy, so I was happy for her and excited to hear the story of how it happened between her and Connor.

Not long after, Kayla arrived, joining us for dinner. Reese, our nanny, and I were already at the table when she walked in, her usual energetic self lighting up the room.

“Where’s Connor?” I asked, my grin widening.

Kayla chuckled as she took a seat and helped herself to some salad. “He’s home. We were together earlier because he was helping me shop for some stuff for my office.”

I raised an eyebrow and gave her a teasing look. “Sounds serious.”

We both laughed, and even Reese joined in, her ey

Elijah’s POVTwo weeks had passed since I’d last seen Reese. I’d taken her to the park, but Sophia had not wanted to join us. And when I went to pick up Reese and drop her off at the apartment, Sophia had also not been there. It was only Reese’s nanny. Sophia is clearly avoiding me, I thought with worry and sadness. Even when I tried dropping by the Urban Next office, Trevis informed me that Sophia was doing mostly fieldwork now, something she had insisted on.At present, I stood in the spacious living room of our home as the couturier measured and adjusted the suit that would supposedly mark the happiest day of my life. So why do I feel so gloomy? My stepmother and Julia’s mom flitted around like excited hummingbirds, their chatter a fusion of wedding plans and exclamations over every minute detail. They were in their element, fussing over the wedding gown, debating lace patterns and veil lengths with great enthusiasm. “Make sure the lace detail is just perfect,” Julia said, her

It was late, well past visiting hours, but urgency propelled me forward.Julia Stanford. The name echoed in my mind, wrapped in layers of resentment and anger and even fear. I approached the nurse's station, my heart pounding against the facade of calm I tried to maintain.“Excuse me,” I said, my voice steady despite the turmoil inside. The nurse behind the counter looked up, fatigue etched into her features.“Yes, how can I help you?” Her tone was polite but tinged with weariness.“I'm looking for Julia Stanford,” I began, my pulse quickening. “I'm her sister, and I just arrived from abroad. I tried reaching her but couldn't get through. I heard there was an accident like two months ago maybe…”The nurse consulted her computer screen, fingers tapping softly on the keyboard. “Julia Stanford... Yes, she was discharged a few weeks ago. But she recently came in for a c

Sophia’s POVThe lobby of Raven Media buzzed with energy as I stepped through the glass doors. I took a deep breath, savoring the sense of purpose and excitement that filled the air.Today was a welcome change of scenery, a chance to immerse myself in something different than my usual routine. I was here to help Kayla with a magazine shoot design for Adrian's new album, and I couldn't wait to dive in.Though I had done this for a time here, it felt like so long ago. And besides, we’re doing a different concept this time so I was very excited. “Sophia!” Kayla's voice rang out as she rushed over to greet me, her eyes sparkling with enthusiasm. Even though she was the creative department director and Adrian's manager, she was still as hands-on as ever. Her parents owned Raven Media, but she had earned her place here through sheer talent and hard work.“Kayla, it's so good to see you again!” I hugged her tightly, feeling a surge of joy even though it’s only been a few days since she’d co

Julia’s POVAs I flexed my fingers, I marveled at the subtle yet distinct improvement in their movement. The tendons stretched and contracted smoothly, a testament to my dedication to physical therapy and, more importantly, to the meticulous execution of my plan. I couldn't help but smile, a wide, self-satisfied grin spreading across my face. Everything was falling into place perfectly.I sat in the living room, sunlight streaming through the sheer curtains. This house, this life, it’s everything I had ever wanted. And now, with Elijah agreeing to marry me, it was all within my grasp. I picked up the stress ball beside me, squeezing it firmly and then releasing. Each successful repetition was a victory, a reminder of how far I'd come.“Almost there,” I whispered to myself, my voice filled with a mixture of determination and elation. “Just a little more and everything will be perfect.”Henry had played his part brilliantly, altering my test results to show brain trauma. Sophia’s POVI paced back and forth in my living room, feeling like I wanted to throw up. Today was Elijah and Julia's wedding day. I still couldn't believe it was really happening. It felt like a cruel joke, a nightmare I couldn't wake up from.I remembered overhearing my colleagues gossiping about the wedding when they thought I wasn't around. They were passing around the invitation, chattering excitedly.“Can you believe it?” Lisa had said, her voice dripping with envy. “Julia's so lucky. She's marrying the owner of Sinclair Realty. And Elijah also has shares in Urban Next, so she might become our boss soon, too.”The idea had never occurred to me before, and it suddenly made me anxious. What if Julia did become our boss? What if she kicked me out? The thought sent a chill down my spine.A knock on the door jolted me back to the present moment. I took a deep breath, trying to steady myself, and went to answer it. It was Trevis, standing there with a gentle smile.“Hey,” he said sof

Sophia’s POVI caught sight of Elijah at the front of the room, looking incredibly handsome and dashing in his tailored suit. He stood with his parents, Morgana and Anderson, both of whom wore proud smiles. Chris, Elijah's best man, stood beside him, adjusting his tie nervously. When Elijah looked in my direction, I quickly avoided his gaze, turning back to laugh with Kayla and Connor. The host of the event stepped up to the microphone, a broad smile on his face. “Ladies and gentlemen, please settle down as the ceremony is about to begin.”The room quieted, and the pastor took his place at the front. Meanwhile, a mini orchestra on the side began to play beautiful, romantic music, setting the tone for the ceremony. Soon all eyes were on the entourage as they started to march down the makeshift aisle, a red carpet rolled out elegantly on the floor. The ring bearer, flower girls, bridesmaids, and groomsmen all proceeded down the aisle, their faces solemn and filled with anticipation.E

Elijah’s POVAs I stood at the altar, watching the chaos unfold, my heart pounded in disbelief. The wedding was now marred by ugly confrontation. Morgana, my stepmother, was charging toward Sophia with fury in her eyes. Before I could even process what was happening, her hand connected with Sophia’s cheek in a resounding slap.I lunged forward instinctively, ignoring the stunned silence that enveloped the guests. Julia made no move to stop me. Instead, she went toward her brother Henry who was rushing to her too. From the corner of my eye, I saw them speaking in low voices, their faces tense and upset. Julia looked distraught and I was afraid that she would lose it again and suddenly throw a tantrum. But I need to get to Sophia first. Kayla, ever loyal, was already on her feet, moving to stand by Sophia’s side. I reached them just as Morgana raised her hand again, her face contorted with rage. “Stop it!” I shouted, my voice echoing through the stunned silence. “Sophia didn’t do any

Sophia’s POVI stumbled into my apartment, the door clicking shut behind me with a finality that made my heart ache. My cheek still stung where Morgana had slapped me, and I could feel the heat radiating from the red mark she had left. Tears streamed down my cheeks, but I brushed them away angrily.I’m not going to break down. No. Nevertheless, my insides were trembling, a chaotic mix of disbelief and anger swirling within me. The image of the ruined wedding flashed in my mind, and I couldn't believe it had all come to this.I glanced at the bedroom where Reese was peacefully sleeping. Thank God she hadn't witnessed any of the chaos. I couldn't bear the thought of her seeing me like this, so vulnerable and broken.Kayla immediately wrapped her arms around me as we plopped down on my couch, rubbing my back in soothing circles. “The nerve of that woman,” she fumed, her voice shaking with anger. “Morgana cheated on her husband and kept that huge secret, and yet she had the gall to sla

Sophia’s POVA hush of golden light slipped through the curtains, draping the room in warmth and calm. It felt like the kind of morning that only came after surviving the storm.Weeks had passed since the chaos faded, and for once, the quiet didn’t feel temporary—it felt earned. I stirred slowly, eyes drifting open to find Elijah beside me, his hand resting lightly over mine. I studied him in the silence, taking in the softened edges of a man who’d carried us through fire and finally found peace.I leaned over and pressed a kiss to his cheek. His eyes fluttered open, and when they focused on me, he smiled sleepily."Morning," he murmured."Morning," I whispered back, letting my fingers trace the line of his jaw. "Can you believe we actually get to wake up like this? No chaos, no danger—just us."He pulled me closer and kissed my forehead. "I could get used to this."Just as I was about to say something, the door burst open."Mommy! Daddy!" Reese called out, followed quickly by Roxy an

Elijah’s POVWe weaved through the cracked streets, deeper into a part of the city that felt like time had forgotten it. Boarded-up windows, rusted signage, buildings collapsing in on themselves. This was the kind of place where ghosts lingered, and today, we were chasing one of them."We’re close," Joe muttered from the front seat, his eyes scanning the GPS on his phone. "This is the last possible location that fits Hugo's hideouts."Antoine sat beside me in the back, silent but focused. His jaw was tight, hands clenched. I still didn’t know if I fully trusted him, but I couldn’t deny this: he was here, risking his neck like the rest of us. And right now, I’d take any edge we could get.I have to find Grandpa George. For Sophia. When we pulled up to the burned-out remains of what once looked like a chapel, a chill shot down my spine. The stone structure still stood, half-charred, the wooden beams above blackened and skeletal. Nature had tried to reclaim it—vines curling around scorch

Elijah’s POV“Sophia…”Her name was the only thing in my mind as I stormed through the decaying hallway, boots slamming against rotting wood, gun drawn. My pulse thundered in my ears. I couldn’t.Joe and his men fanned out behind me, covering corners, checking every room.We were running out of time. Then—A scream. My heart nearly stopped. It was her.I charged forward, slamming my shoulder into the door at the end of the hall. It burst open—and I saw red.Morgana was on the ground, gasping for air as Hugo’s hand squeezed her throat, and across the room, Sophia was trying to drag herself toward them, her face pale and streaked with tears.“NO!” I shouted, and without hesitation, I raised my gun.Hugo turned just as I fired. The bullet tore through his shoulder. He howled, stumbling back and releasing Morgana, who crumpled to the floor, coughing violently.I crossed the room in three strides and tackled Hugo before he could

Sophia’s POVThe first thing I felt was cold.A biting chill that wrapped around my arms and legs like a second set of restraints. Then came the pressure—tight, scratchy ropes cutting into my wrists. My head pounded like a drum, fog thick behind my eyes. Everything smelled like mildew and dust.My eyes struggled to make sense of the shadows. The room was dim, lit only by a weak bulb overhead that flickered like it couldn’t decide if it wanted to stay on. I was on a metal chair, hands tied behind my back, ankles secured to the legs. The air tasted stale and old, like the walls had been sealed off from the world for decades.Panic bloomed in my chest. My brother Chris. What had become of him?I jerked forward, straining against the ropes. “Chris!” I called, my voice hoarse and raw. “Where is he?!”I noticed some movement in the darkness. A shadow stirred in the corner of the room. I froze as a figure stepped out into the light. Tall. Gray-streaked beard. Sunken eyes like old coals. A d

Sophia’s POV“This is insane,” Elijah muttered, rubbing a hand over his face. “We’re relying on Antoine to lead us to Hugo. Does no one else see how crazy that is?”Joe, who had been checking messages on his phone, barely looked up. “We don’t have another choice.”I watched Elijah pace the room, his frustration clear. He wasn’t wrong, but I knew that if there was even the smallest chance of finding Grandpa George, we had to take it.Joe sighed and turned to Antoine. “You sure you can make him bite?”Antoine shrugged. “I know Hugo. He’s a cockroach—he won’t go down without a fight. But if he thinks his last hiding spot is compromised, he’ll make a move. That’s when we strike.”Elijah muttered something under his breath, but I didn’t catch it. Joe’s phone buzzed. As he studied the screen, he said, “We got something. Two possible locations.”Elijah straightened. “Then let’s move.”They all hurried out, and I had the sudden, overwhelming urge to call Elijah back—to make sure he’d pick up

Anyone suspicious? A car, a stranger?”Her red-rimmed eyes filled with fresh tears as she shook her head. “No… nothing. I don’t know how this happened.” Her voice broke. “George was just in his study… and then he was gone.”Elijah placed a hand on my shoulder, grounding me, but I could feel the rage simmering beneath his calm exterior. Why?!My hands instinctively balled up as my heart slammed against my ribs. Could this really be the same man?Hugo’s expression darkened with satisfaction as he took another step, exuding an air of quiet arrogance.“Well, well,” he drawled, his voice smooth but laced with something sinister. “You’re not as fun outside of prison, Antoine.”Phoebe’s grip on my wrist tightened. “Emily, let’s go,” she muttered under her breath.I wanted to. Even as Antoine stood in front of me, blocking my way, I forced my body to stay still, to stay firm.I squared my shoulders, my fingers curling into fists at my sides. “Move.”Antoine didn’t budge. His gaze shifted between me and Phoebe, like he wasn’t sure if I’d actually listen or turn and run.“I’m not here to fight,” he said, his voice calm. “I just want to talk.”Phoebe’s grip on my arm tightened, and her anger was immediate, sharp.“Oh, hell no,” she snapped. “What are you even doing here? Haven’t you caused enough trouble?”I inhaled slowly, forcing myself to stay calm. I wasn’t going to let him see me feeling nervous or affected by him. Antoine exhaled, his face unreadable. “I just wanted to talk.”Phoebe laughed coldly. “Talk? You took Jared, Antoine. Without permission. Do you have any idea what you put us through?”“I know,” he admitted. “I made a mistake.”Phoebe scoffed. “A mistake?”I stepped forward, my gaze hardening. “Please, Antoine.
