Edward Dan forgot about the word relationship until his grandfather’s will was read and he got to know that to inherit Dan Realty, he had to be married. He can’t afford to fall for anyone and definitely not the blue eyes blonde waitress he met at the diner. So, the answer was a contract-marriage. Living under the same roof with the woman he is undeniably attracted too can’t be so hard. He just had to make sure of one thing. He does not fall for his little sensitive wife. But that was never really a choice, was it? As a result of her father’s medical bills, Stephanie agrees to go into a contract marriage with the arrogant CEO, Edward Dan. What is two years anyways? Just a little too much time to come out of this with her heart unscathed.

CHAPTER ONE

STEPHANIE “And here is a vanilla milkshake for the sweet girl”. Little giggles follow as I drop the glass down. The diner was a little less crowded compared to other Friday evenings. And I had enough time to share with my little friend who laughed showing a gap between her teeth due to a fallen tooth. “Thank you, Steph”, I bent down to her height and she placed a kiss on my cheek. This was our usual thing. A few months ago, she had walked in with Emma, her babysitter. She was kind of bummed because some kids at school had been mean to her. Some kids can be really cruel. She was a sweet little girl who was not capable of any harm. They made her cry that day and my milkshake saved the day. It reminded me of a few nights ago, I was serving at one of the tables and a little boy, after a brief observation, had stated that I was dumb because all blondes are supposedly dumb. I had kept my mouth shut and walked away, knowing very well that nothing decent would come out of it. I didn't bl

CHAPTER TWO

EDWARD“I want this report completed by the end of the day.” I slammed the poor excuse of a report on the desk and glared at the man who kept standing there looking stupid. It has only been a week since he joined and my patience is running thin.“Do you understand?” He flinched at my harsh tone.“Yes, Mr. Dan.” Just then, the door to my cabin opened and my father walked in followed by our lawyer. If I were to go by my father’s expression, it was something concerning. I shifted my gaze back to my assistant still standing in front of me.“Leave!” He quickly got hold of the file and scurried out of the cabin.“Dad?” I called out to him, so he could spill the beans already. He and Mr. Davis took the seats opposite me. “Edward, Mr. Davis is here to read your grandfather’s will.” It wasn’t something I was expecting. Granddad passed away about a month ago and his will had not been brought up since. I leaned back in my seat and loosened the tie around my neck. This was it, a lifetime of wealt

CHAPTER THREE

STEPHANIE“Enjoy your meal,” I said quietly, quickly passing a polite smile to the customers seated at the last booth, I walked back to the counter. The Diner was quite full. I was about to grab my pad to take another booth when I heard Anna’s voice. The next few seconds were chaotic. I turned around and everything happened in a snap of my fingers. She collided with the legs of Amy, another waitress who lost her balance, and the glasses she was carrying, crashed down on the floor.“What the hell!?” A lady sitting in the adjacent booth shrieked. My eyes fell upon her dress which was a bit spoiled by the drinks. A moment of commotion before there was a second of complete silence.“I’m sorry-“ Amy was cut off by the seething customer.“Shut up! Is your stupid sorry going to get this stain off?” She glared at her before her furious glance settled on Anna and my heart skipped a beat.“And you! Why are you running around?” Anna flinched at her tone and so did I. The way the woman was glaring

CHAPTER FOUR

EDWARD This was not how I had imagined the day to turn out for us. This day was supposed to be enjoyable for Anna. A father and daughter moment but Instead, it began with tears. I was one second away from getting the hell out of this place but stopped when Anna nodded to a milkshake Steph who turned out to be a waitress and not a kid offered. It is difficult to believe that in today’s world people would lift a finger for someone unless it is serving some ulterior motives of their own. Could be depressing, seeing things from my own perspective but I deemed it advisable. That is how things work in the real world, one works their way up the ladder and stays on top of their business. My thoughts were interrupted when I saw her walking up to us. “A Strawberry milkshake for the pretty girl!” She stopped before us and most dramatically placed the glass in front of Anna who in turn giggled.“Steph, This is my daddy.” Anna grabbed my hand and beamed at her. I supposed that was my cue to

CHAPTER FIVE

STEPHANIE “I need those documents right now. And here’s the draft. Make the necessary changes and bring them back to me.” the HR said, sliding the file across the table to me. “Sure.” I replied exhausted already. It’s been a week since I joined this furniture company as the HR assistant and to be honest I had some inefficient subordinates. I was left under a lot of work pressure but I knew that I was going to make this work, I had to.I leaned back in my seat to relieve my neck which hurt from sitting straight for hours. My phone rang only a second later. It was an unknown number. I waited for the person to speak first, something I have always done.“Edward Dan on this side. Am I speaking to Ms. Smith?” The familiar, authoritative voice filled the brief silence. Edward Dan as in Anna’s father. I remembered that name but what I didn’t remember was any unfinished business that he could call me for.“Speaking. How may I help you?” I heard some shuffling on the other side. The reply came

CHAPTER SIX

STEPHANIE “Stephanie. Hear me out.” The way my name rolled off his tongue did something stupid to my stomach. I turned around and waited for him to get on with it.“You would get a job here and I’ll offer you thrice or more than your current salary. You won’t have to work two jobs. We need to be married for two years. After that, we can go our separate ways.” He said to me and I replayed his words in my mind. He did miss the part where he explained what he would get out of it.“What’s in it for you?” He seemed to be reflecting on his answer, stroking his chin in the process.“My grandfather’s will. I need to get married by the end of this year or I’ll lose the business to someone.” The first thought that came to me was that this ‘granddaddy’ must have been demented while alive. Mom always thought that we shouldn’t speak ill of the dead but who in their sane mind would write such a will!?“Where’s Anna’s mother?”“Not in the picture.” This time the answer was a little too spontaneous

CHAPTER SEVEN

STEPHENIE The moment I set the pen down, my head started swarming with doubts. A headache banged away incessantly in my head, all the while feeling Edwards scrutinizing gaze on me.“Now that it’s settled, we need a story.”“A story?” I asked,“Of how we met?” His face held an expression that clearly said that I was a bit dense. My brain hadn’t quite processed the fact that I had signed those papers. It’s not every day that one agrees to a contract marriage.“At the Diner. We met at the diner when Anna brought you there.” I suggested it and it was technically true.Edward nodded once. “That should do.”Could I leave already? I had heard enough of this conceited man to last me a lifetime. I stole a glance at my watch. “Are we done here? I have a job and I’m running late.”He stared at me blankly. “You don’t need that job anymore.”“I do until I get the appointment letter.” I hated it when someone tried to dictate my actions. It was a feeble attempt at getting the point across. He sighe

CHAPTER EIGHT

STEPHANIE “You’re late.” Edward declared as soon as I got into the passenger seat of his car. He had sent me a message that he was outside and I should quickly get dressed and meet him. Does this man ever plan something? He had told me to be ready for him but not like this, in minutes. I quickly put on a short dress, picked up my bag, and ran outside to see his flashy car which stood out in my street. I hissed, he was showing off, or perhaps he wasn't, he was just rich. I got into the car. The inside of the car smelled of musk, new car scent, and rich leather.“Where are we going?” I asked.“You’ll see when we get there. We are late” He didn't even glance once at me as if he didn't just ask me to meet up with him without notice. I was angry as it was. “Why didn't you dress up properly?” He asked. What did he mean? I didn't know when I blurted out “Can you shut up? I don’t wanna hear your voice right now.”He did keep quiet and just sat there still staring ahead. Didn't he just say

CHAPTER NINE

“You have a beautiful room, Anna!” She looked up at me, a toothy grin splitting her face. It was all shades of pink and white, put together. Pink was probably Anna’s favorite color. Explained her obsession with strawberry flavors. The bed was in the middle of the room, almost filled with plushies. My eyes fell on a drawing, presumably the one Anna was working on before she got distracted. “Do you like butterflies?”, I asked, picking up the sketchbook.“Yes! They’re so pretty! And colorful” I smiled at her. My eyes were still lingering on the partly colored wings of the butterfly when Anna blurted the question out of the blue. “Are you daddy’s girlfriend?”My hand stilled on the sketchbook before I put it down. “Who told you that?” I casually asked.“I heard Daddy telling Emma that you are his girlfriend,” she replied unhesitantly. Did she eavesdrop on our conversation? I sighed.“Well, that’s true.”“Are you going to marry him?” Anna fired the question just as soon. I looked at her

CHAPTER TEN

EDWARDStephanie's mother, Talia, looked as much as Stephanie. They bore striking resemblance. Talia had a much softer gaze, unlike her husband, Roger, who had been giving me a hard stare since I arrived and halfway through the evening.I had gotten gifts for them and paid for the table-filled dinner we were having. Why was Roger still inflamed? His hard stance, however, did very little to mask his infirmity. The dark patches under his eyes made him look tired and a lot older. It felt like a taunt. I had used his illness to get Stephanie to sign the papers. I felt a little bit guilty and I know I shouldn't.I needed to try to act nice at least. Talia seemed to like me; Olivia, whom Stephanie introduced as her best friend, was drooling over me. It was not new. I normally anticipated that look from every girl. Everyone did except Stephenie, the one I chose as a wife.I was also introduced to another friend of hers, Dean, who happened to be a guy and I didn't like the proximity they had
