Lance's POV
I was going crazy and I knew it but I couldn't help it. The moon goddess must be playing tricks on me. It was my eighteenth birthday but it was my saddest. My wolf had happily tackled my sister to the ground in happiness in the presence of all that were there to celebrate my eighteenth birthday. As the future Beta of the park, it would have been disappointing if I didn't get my wolf. It had happened before in our lineage and this had made my parents especially my mum very anxious. My grandfather was not the direct bloodline of the Beta post but according to history his elder brother who ought to take over from their father never got his wolf. At first, they had thought his wolf was only delayed for a particular reason but when he didn't get his wolf at the age of twenty-five, my grandfather who was twenty years then was asked to start training. According to my grandfather, the training was difficult and draining and he nearly gave up. It wasn't easy to train to become a Beta at the age of twenty. Betas started training around the age of twelve. Betas were usually emotionally and physically conditioned to do their jobs. The Alpha and Luna he was to serve were his main priority. My grandfather survived the training and was made the Beta of our pack. My parents were apprehensive that if what happened before should repeat itself, it meant the Beta position might leave our family forever. The elders might not allow my sister to take over as the Beta. Our pack had never had a female occupying the post of a Beta. That morning of my eighteenth birthday I had woken up with a mixture of joy and anxiety. I was going to get my wolf and probably my mate and live happily ever after but the moon goddess sure had another plan for me. It was painful turning into my wolf for the first time. It was a good thing that my dad actually took his time to explain to me what it was likely to feel like and because I was having a Beta blood, the transition might be more painful than that of any normal wolf. I smiled when I looked at my dad immediately I was able to get on my feet after my first shift. He looked at me with so much pride in his eyes and I couldn't have been more proud of myself. I couldn't wait to see the look on my mother and sister's faces when they beheld my wolf. I nearly bolted for the house but my father's steady hands on my fur stopped me. He signaled for me to turn and face the forest. It was then I remembered I would first have to go on a run with the men of the pack. It was a way of testing my agility since I was their future Beta, they needed to be sure I could take my father's place. No normal wolf can go through the pain of shifting into their wolf and going for a run all in one night. It was only the Alpha and Beta that were made to do it. That was why our training was always difficult and draining, it was to prepare us for the task ahead. I howled to the sky and broke into a run into the forest followed by the men in our pack and my dad, who by then had shifted into their wolves. I knew I shouldn't fail so I kept pushing. I was the first to get to the edge of the forest, I stopped and waited for them to get to me. My father was the first to appear I gave him a tired yelp. He came to me and rubbed his snort on my tired face as if he were cleaning my sweat. I turned away from him, mind linking him to stop, he only laughed and told us all it was time to head back, his son had proven himself worthy of being their Beta. We stopped at the stream to drink water but I didn't want us to stop, I wanted to see my sister already. Our parents were rarely around except on occasions like my birthday so my sister and I kind of take care of each other always, more like I became her father, mother, brother, and confidant all rolled up in one. She was my confidant too. It kind of got crazy sometimes when I tried to deal with her emotional mess alongside mine. I was just three years older than she was, yet I had to take care of us. I could already imagine what the look on her face would be like when she beheld my wolf. We had both talked extensively about what my wolf would possibly look like. She had said I was going to have Dad's midnight black fur color. I had not argued with her because that was what I expected. I looked at my image in the stream and gave a wolfish laugh, dad lifted his head and looked at me questioningly. I shook my head at him signifying that nothing was wrong. I looked up at the sky, it was still dark but I could actually see everything around me. I looked at my immaculately white fur in the stream and wondered why I didn't ask my sister to bet what the color of my wolf would be. At least I would have won her money and made her pout in envy. I was so consumed with the thought of my sister that I didn't know that the others were already on the move, my dad nudged me on the side and we moved on. When we were getting near the house I suddenly felt a pang in my chest and my breathing accelerated. My wolf seemed to take over my thinking completely. It felt strange losing control but it was not something I wasn't prepared for. Due to the strength of my wolf, it was possible for it to consume the human part of me and submerge it totally but I was trained and I knew how to get the reins back. I tried reasoning with my wolf not to do anything rash but it kept insisting we go inside the house immediately. 'Are you ready to go in son?' My father asked through the mind link. I turned and faced my father. 'I don't know Dad, my wolf is suddenly getting restless.' 'Maybe your mate is inside the house.' 'I would be glad Dad. I don't want to start looking for my mate all over packs.' 'Your mother invited all the eligible girls in the pack. Besides, Maureen's best friend has an eye for you. She just might be the one.' 'Dad, I hope she isn't,' I said rolling my wolf eyes. I can hear Dad laugh through the mind link. 'Why not her, son?' 'Then I have to wait another three years before I can let her know she is my mate. I don't want to be mated to a baby dad.' 'Let's go in and find out then. Let's hope it is not one of your mum's nosy friends,' Dad laughed in the mind link and I laughed too. My father and I might not get to spend a lot of time together but we were really close and whenever he got to be around we talked a lot and I can say we were good friends. Although my sister was a different ball game. They both seemed not to have a good relationship with her. It was more like I was her parent and they were just there for us. Maureen didn't bother with them as far as I was there with her. I once talked about it with my mother but she only said I was the one perceiving it that way. So I had to let the sleeping dog lie. We walked into the house and I had to control my wolf from bolting to wherever it wanted to go. We had to first pay our respect to the Alpha and the Luna then to Dominus who I will be serving as his Beta. Dominus and I were friends, even best friends just like our fathers. Our mothers too were friends. We both joked about it once that maybe if the Luna had had a girl after Dominus, she would have been my sister's best friend too. After greeting the Alpha and his family, I had to do all I could to make my wolf stop and acknowledge Mum. She looked at me with so much pride. I could see her eyes mist over. She had never shown so much emotion in my presence before. She rubbed my wolf's head gently and that seemed to calm him down a little. My wolf suddenly seemed to smell something in the air. Before I could do anything to stop him, he made a beeline for my sister and tackled her to the ground. Maureen must have thought I was playing with her because she laughed and rubbed her hand on the fur on my side. My wolf put his nose on Maureen's neck and sniffed her, it tickled her and she laughed harder. I took hold of control and bolted straight upstairs. I could sense the deafening silence downstairs. 'What the hell just happened? That is our sister,' I berated my wolf. 'If she is our sister, why then is her scent calling out to us?' My wolf answered nonchalantly. 'You are the only one it is calling out to, not me. I only hope the goddess didn't give me a mad wolf,' I said getting ready to change into my human form. 'I am not mad, I know what I sensed,' my wolf insisted. 'You will stay away from her, she is our sister. We ought to protect and love her. She thought just now that you were playing with her, we would keep it that way,' I shouted in my head and blocked my wolf out. I quickly changed into my human form before my wolf could do or say anything more stupid. I entered the bathroom feeling the opposite of what I thought I would be feeling that day. But I knew I had to push through with the ceremony, I had guests downstairs and I couldn't afford to hole up in my room. I only hope I can keep my mad wolf at bay around Maureen.Lance's POVI heard a soft knock on my door but I ignored it. I was sure it was one of the kitchen hands coming to wake me, probably on Mum's instruction.I had turned all night trying to sleep. I had gone through my own birthday party like a zombie. The idea that the moon goddess gave me a crazy wolf was enough to keep me awake all night. So I wasn't ready to get up that morning. The knock came again and I ignored it, thinking the person would go away when I refused to answer. I waited for another three seconds and dosed off to sleep. My sister's smell was all I smelled in the house now so I wasn't ready to strain myself to get who was at the door specifically.I was drifting off to sleep when suddenly somebody jumped into my bed. The instance the person's body touched mine I knew who it was. My wolf became too alert for my liking.'Shit, Maureen what are you doing here so early?' I shouted at my sister the instance I got on my feet.'Lance, I have always done this in the morning,' s
Lance's POV'Lance stop, let her go,' Dominus shouted at me, his voice piercing the haze covering my senses. I dropped her and started shivering.I couldn't believe I almost killed my sister. I had warned her to stay away from me. I avoided going home because of her. I was going crazy and my wolf was not helping matters. He yearned for her like a pervert. I was going to go mad if care wasn't taken. I had to stay as far away from her as possible until my crazy wolf got back to his senses. I had found her sleeping in my room days before, I had to strip the bed of every layer of clothing on it just to get rid of her chocolaty scent. It was bad enough that her smell hung around the house, even in the surrounding bushes.I had cried on Mum's bosom that morning too overwhelmed with wanting her and trying to stay away from her. I was not about to commit incest because some stupid wolf thought nothing of it. If he was crazy, I was sane. It was an endless war between me and my wolf. In the m
Lance's POV'Lancelot tell me it is a lie,' my mum fumed immediately I entered the pack's hospital room where my sister laid hooked to a machine. I walked towards my mum holding my hands in front of me as if I was praying. That day after I ran, I stayed away from home. It's been two days. Only Dominus knew where I was. I couldn't face my parents, look them in the eye and tell them I almost killed their daughter. Despite the fact that they weren't that close to Maureen, I knew no parent would want their child dead. I walked towards my mum carefully, unsure of how emotionally stable she was. She was after all a Beta wolf. No amount of love she has for me can stop her from hurting me if her wolf decided to punish me for what I did and I was sure my wolf would not lift a finger in defense because of two things. One, she was my mother, two, it would be an opportunity for my wolf to see me punished. He has been going mad in my head for the past two days. 'Mum, I am really very sorry. You
Maureen's POVI could hear voices around me even if I could not discern what they were saying. I heard but I was frustrated by my fussy brain. Why can't I understand a word of what they were saying? I tried hard to open my eyes but it seemed something kept pulling me under. I almost wept. I tried, I fought, just maybe I could open one eye but I lost the battle and gave in. The darkness swallowed me again as I went under. 'Hey Maureen. Can you hear me?' I heard someone's voice saying. This time I recognized the voice as Lucia's and I understood everything she was saying.'The doctors said we should speak to you that you can hear us. If it is true that you can hear me, I miss you Maureen. It is very boring without you. I want my friend back, I want all our silly jokes and adventures.' She stopped a while. I heard her blow her nose. I knew she was crying, my heart ached. I wished I could at least talk to her and tell her to stop crying. I wished I could comfort her and embrace her. I
Maureen's POVI walked into my room with an unexplainable feeling of emptiness. A lot of things didn't make sense. A lot of questions begging for answers.Lucia followed closely behind me. She had not said anything since we left the hospital. It was as if she could understand my pain. She squeezed my hand once in a while as if to tell me she was there if I needed her. What I really needed was to be alone but I couldn't bring myself to do that to Lucia, not after the way she took care of me in the hospital.I sat down on my bed and looked around my room. Even I didn't understand why I was looking from one angle to the other as if looking for something. I was sad to the level of depression. Lucia dropped my overnight bag on the floor then silently came to sit next to me on the bed. She had been by my side since I woke up at the hospital. If not for the seriousness of the situation, I would have laughed at how comical her face looked when she shouted from the surprise of me waking up af
Lance's POVI noticed the difference in the atmosphere immediately we entered our pack territory. My wolf perked up and I noticed that Dominus too looked anxious.I didn't know what type of welcome I would receive from my sister. My parents will surely be happy to see me after three years. We spoke on the phone everyday or I would say I speak with dad everyday. Mum will put in sometimes and I would have no option but to talk to her. Mum and I were never really close but dad and I were like best friends. I tell him everything except for the fact that my sister was my mate. I couldn't even muster the audacity to look him in the eyes or tell him on the phone that his daughter, my sister was my mate.'I just wish that my wolf will not look at my sister the same way anymore,' I said to Dominus.'We are about to find out. If your wolf still feels the same, then you have to let your parents know this time,' Dominus advised.'Tell my parents what? Are you crazy? My dad will simply get a silv
Maureen's POV He is back! That was what kept ringing in my mind. Lance was back. I didn't know he was coming back that day, just maybe I would have fled the house before his arrival.I couldn't look at him so I had left the porch and went inside. I couldn't bear to look him in the face. The anger that still boiled in my heart towards him might spill over and I would do what I would later regret. He almost killed me, left me for death and fled like the coward he was. He left without as much as a goodbye. He left without even seeing me one last time. He never visited the hospital. He that I least expected would hurt me.I swiped at the tears rolling down my eyes. I was determined not to cry. The first two weeks after I was discharged from the hospital were the worst days of my life. I slept in his room for one week. One day the Luna decided she had had enough of my mopping and used her Luna command on me to get out of the room and get myself cleaned up. No one can resist the Alpha or
Lance's POVMaureen stormed out of the dining area leaving us in total disbelief. Her eyes turned complete gold- both the white and black. I have never seen anything like it. It shone like there was light behind the gold color.I had thought I had heard wrong when I heard her arguing with Lucia. I had actually thought Lucia had pulled the stunt about her eyes changing just to get back on her good side. I had stood at the door and heard them argue back and forth. I didn't like what I heard. Her voice had been hard and it sounded strange to me.Maureen was so sweet that she couldn't hurt a fly with her words. To hear sarcasm, hatred and annoyance dripping from her mouth actually broke my heart.I had not expected her to show up for the dinner. I was the one who sent the kitchen help to tell her to come for dinner. I had to bully the poor girl into lying. I didn't know how best to approach her. I had cornered Lucia when she was about leaving. 'You are not staying for dinner? ' I said
Maureen's POV'Ian must have known that I already met Lisa,' I fumed.'Why are you angry?' Grandma Gina asked.'He could have just given this to me when we were at Amman's pack and we could have simply headed off to Lisa's pack from there,' I said pacing Grandma Gina's room.'You need to calm yourself down child. Things are not done that way. If what you told me about Lisa is true then heading off to her pack immediately might not be the best. Her pack would need time to come to terms with the fact that their child was back before you barge in on them,' Grandma Gina reasoned.I sat down and thought about asking Grandma Gina about Ian. Maybe a part of the prophecy we didn't know talked about him.'Grandma Gina, was Ian mentioned at all in the prophecy?' I asked.'The bane keeper was not mentioned at all. The golden wolf kept him a secret that was probably why he had remained safe for this long,' Grandma Gina answered before asking me why I asked the question. 'Something in what Ian sa
Maureen's POV'I guess your presence means you are back,' Ian said as he sat down beside me on the bench in the pack.'Yes. Obviously,' I said without looking at him.'How was the journey? Enjoyable?' Ian asked and I had to turn to look at him.'Are you being sarcastic? Enjoyable? No, it wasn't in anyway enjoyable,' I said in annoyance. I dropped the rest of the sandwich I was munching on before he arrived on the floor.'Good to know that you are angry. You will need that anger to propel you henceforth,' Ian said with all seriousness.'Why will I need anger to propel me? Besides, who will I be getting angry with?' I asked frowning.'You will find out,' he said before bringing out what looked like a folded paper. He placed it on the space between us and held it down with a finger.'What is this?' I asked looking from his face to the paper he held between us.'This is the map that will lead you to Rocha.' 'Who is Rocha?' I asked looking confused.'The one I told you that you need on yo
Maureen's POVThe days after the revelation of the fact that Dawn and I are sisters had been very hectic so I had not been able to talk to her about anything. She was being herself and I was being myself around her. Although I had not felt any sort of connection ever since we met, I saw her like one of us always especially since she was part of the prophecy. Since the Alpha said the five of us would be leaving soon, I decided against calling Grandma Gina on the phone. Amman had really created a big mess. A mess of people's lives and a mess of his pack now ours. But after a day of rigorous work, things were beginning to take shape. I walked to a group of women that were taking down the number of kids whose parents were dead or who they didn't just see anymore to give them helping hand. I saw Dawn talking to some teenagers and telling them exactly what to do. As silent as Dawn could be, I was surprised to see her that she was really good with people. She looked up at the moment I w
Maureen's POV'Is there something I need to know?' Lucia asked from behind me. Her voice startled me.'You startled me,' I said and turned to face her. We were in one of the store rooms in Alpha Amman's house. Our duty was to make sure that the soldiers divided the grains to the people accordingly. 'Of course you will be startled since your mind has been obviously wandering since we got here,' Lucia said.'What do you mean?' I asked feigning ignorance.'Your gaze has been on Dawn all morning Maureen, is there something going on?' Lucia asked. 'Yes am no. Nothing is going on,' I said and turned back to examine a bag of grain to make sure it was still good for consumption. When the Alpha had gone out with dad, mum, Dominus and Lance the previous day, they had worked with some of the elders who Amman had relieved of their eldership because they refused to cooperate with his wicked administration. They had successfully divided the people into different groups so that they could get re
Maureen's POVEvery word that came out of Mara's mouth cut into my soul like a sword. I never believed in my life that anybody anywhere could be that cruel and mean. Mara held on to mum like a drowning person as she cried bitterly. I saw that Lucia was crying too but I couldn't. I was angry. I felt so embittered by what innocent Mara had gone through.Mara's tears gradually faded into hiccups. She must be feeling broken. She was strong, no doubt. For her to have held so much pain in and helped us with the girls, she was indeed strong. 'Mara.' A voice called from behind us and that immediately made Mara lift her head from mum's chest and looked at her new comer. The girl was held between the doctors. She looked pale but that didn't hide her beauty. She had long beautiful lashes that hid her eyes behind them.'Lisa,' Mara shouted in excitement and ran to hug the fragile looking girl. Lisa? We all gaped at her. I couldn't help but wonder if it was the same disfigured Lisa that was lyi
Lance's POVEveryone gaped in surprise at Mara. She was physically shaking and breathing hard. She looked so angry for the mild tempered woman we had met the day before. She wasn't satisfied with cutting the Gamma's throat obviously as she started stabbing him all over with the tip of the sword.'Mara you need to stop. He is dead already,' dad said as it seemed everyone one of us was too surprised to say anything.Mara didn't stop. She kept stabbing him non stop. 'Mara,' the Alpha called her name but she didn't answer. She just kept on with it until the Alpha stepped forward and got hold of her by the shoulder.'No. He has to die. Let me kill him,' Mara said lifting her face up. There were blood stains that came from the Gamma's body on her face and clothes. There was also a crazed look on her face.'He is dead already,' the Alpha said gently as he noticed the look on her face.'Then he must burn. He must burn right now,' Mara said as she started dashing around looking for something.
Maureen's POVLucia and I listened to the noise coming from outside with trepidation. It sounded like the sound of war. My heart was beating so fast that it seemed like it wanted to just jump out and beat me on the floor freely.I tried mind-linking Lance to no avail. Lucia also tried Dominus and there was no response.'I can't continue to just stay here Lucia we have to see what's going on,' I said as I started pacing as worry consumed every of my being.'We can't defy their orders Maureen. Let us wait here,' Lucia said and I looked at her in surprise.'Since when did you start following orders Lucia,' I asked in amazement. Lucia was one person that was very daring.'Since I got mated to Dominus. He is a very dominant male, he liked to be listened to and obeyed,' Lucia answered.'So also is Lance. But this new you is quite surprising,' I said. Lucia didn't give me any more reply. Then I noticed something different in her that I haven't noticed before. Lucia was twisting her finger
Lance's POVI woke up as I felt Dominus pressing into my mind link. I gently removed Maureen from me to avoid waking her up. I checked the time to see it was already six o'clock in the morning. I had barely slept for three hours.I opened the link and grumbled a not so gentle, 'What?' into the mind link.'Lisa is awake,' Dominus said.'What do you mean by she is awake?' 'That is what the doctors said. You need to come down,' Dominus said and cut the link.I looked at Maureen on the bed with her golden hair spread all over the pillow and wondered if her touch had actually healed Lisa. Lucia had said she didn't see the ball of light but I did. I was very sure that I had not imagined it. It actually happened. I stood up to change from my pyjamas so that I could go downstairs and see what was happening for myself but then I stopped Maureen would want to be there too. Despite the fact that I didn't want to wake her up when she had just had little sleep, I gently shook her awake by her
Lance's POV'Reen you need to calm down,' I said for the umpteenth time.'What if I wasn't meant to touch her? What if she dies quicker because of my careless move?' Maureen asked looking too worried for her own good.'Either you touched her or not she would have died. It might have been a coincidence that you touched her at her very last moment,' Lucia said and I sent a grateful look her way.'No. it wasn't coincidental. I felt warmth go out from me into her,' Maureen argued. She was right. She had felt the warmth and I had seen the bright light that processed from Maureen into Lisa.I knew Lucia also saw It but she was trying to make Maureen calm down so that we could talk about it. I wished at that moment that Grandma Gina was around. I had asked Maureen and Lucia to accompany me to see Lisa for the last time because I wasn't sure I would be able to stop myself from breaking down. I had expected that their presence would help me keep it together. When Maureen had suddenly started
