I watched all that confusion without knowing what to do. The right thing to do would be to stay quiet and not get involved in any problems, but since it was someone I knew, being the son of my boss, it was as if, for a brief moment, I felt responsible for checking if he was okay or if he needed help.
"Do you know them?" Zoe's question pulled my attention, and I looked at her with raised eyebrows.
"No..." My vision shifted to Joshua making his way to the bar's exit. "I..."
Before I could finish, I stood up from the chair and grabbed my purse, walking towards the exit of the place.
"Hey! Where are you going?" I heard Zoe ask, but I ignored her and continued my steps until I left the bar.
I didn't exactly have an explanation for why I was going after Mr. Scott's son, besides wanting to offer help. And also, I was a little curious. The guy had just arrived in town and was already in trouble.
"Hey!" I said in a slightly loud tone, enough for him to hear me.
Joshua stopped in his tracks. We weren't that far apart, but a car could fit between us. Keeping his back to me, I walked a little closer to him, stopping two and a half steps away from his body.
"Are you... okay?" I asked, careful. "I saw what happened." I looked at the ground while tapping my fingers slowly on my purse.
I heard Joshua let out a sigh.
"Don't worry about it," he said briefly and turned around. "Forget what you saw."
"Impossible..." I slid my gaze from the ground to his face. For the first time, I was truly staring at him. And he was beautiful. Even more beautiful than I could imagine, even in a well-lit environment.
"Then just keep it to yourself. Okay?"
"But... Are you really okay? Who was that guy?"
Joshua took two steps towards me, standing inches away from me. He leaned his head down, because of our vast height difference, and I saw his eyes become chaotic.
"It's not your problem."
My lips parted, showing how frustrated I was.
Sure, I was curious about a situation that had nothing to do with me, but damn, I had come from the heart to ask if he was okay.
"I know. But I was just worried!" I tried to justify.
"And I told you not to worry," he said shortly and bluntly.
As much as he furrowed his brow and looked impatient with me, I returned his gaze indignantly.
"Shouldn't you be grateful that there are people who care about you?"
"Do you really care? Or are you just taking advantage of the situation?"
"What?!" I said incredulously.
"There's nothing in my personal life that you need to know about. You know, there are already enough people interfering in my privacy. I don't need one more."
He said his last words before walking to his car, getting in, and leaving the parking lot.
Great... This is what happens when I try to be kind to someone. Pure ingratitude. It seems that the guy Betty speaks so highly of is a jerk.
I started staring at nothingness while thinking about the quick confusion and Joshua's attitude. Was he rude to me because he really wanted to or was it just a way to protect his privacy? And, on top of that, was that guy irritating him or was it the other way around?
"Argh..." I sighed as those doubtful thoughts swirled in my mind. "Whatever." I crossed my arms, a little annoyed. "Anyway, what do I have to do with it? I don't even know him. He doesn't know me. Whatever."
I argued with myself and went back inside the bar. The situation seemed to have been resolved. Joshua was no longer there, and neither was the other man. I sat back down with the girls, who luckily were still there.
"Where did you go?" Zoe asked as she saw me approaching.
"Huh... I went to talk to a friend." I shrugged. Although he's not even a friend. "Did I miss anything?"
I asked, trying to tune in to the events that might have occurred after my departure.
"Besides the confusion... nothing." A pout formed on her lips as she shook her head. "You know..." she leaned closer to me. "During the confusion... you said 'Mr. Scott's son'." She made quotation marks with her fingers. "Who were you referring to?"
Inevitably, my eyes widened. I hadn't realized that I had spoken in a tone that she could hear.
"Who was it?"
I was a little hesitant about what to say. Joshua had told me to keep it a secret. I don't know if telling the girls would mean anything. But anyway, it was better to stay quiet. At least this time.
"No... I think I said it randomly," I lied and shrugged, pretending I really had no idea. "Huh... Why don't we drink?" I suggested, trying to make Zoe forget about the confusion involving Joshua. "Here!"
I saw a waiter pass by us holding a tray of beer glasses. I grabbed two and handed one to Zoe, keeping the other one.
"I'll pay!" I said quickly, trying to proceed with my strategy.
***
"Mom..." I whined. "I promise I'll never drink again in my life..."
I lamented for every beer glass I had drunk. The world was spinning with every step I took. It was already late, and I was alone on the street. Not to mention the strong pain in my stomach caused by the large amount of alcohol ingested on an empty stomach.
"Mom... If I die before I get home, I want to say..." I leaned my body weight against the wall of some house after feeling my legs almost weaken. "Sorry for being this horrible daughter. I..." I felt like throwing up, but nothing happened. I continued with dragging steps as I slid my body along the walls of each residence.
The more I mentally begged for Mr. Scott's house to be close to me, the further away it seemed to be. I was about to throw myself on the ground and stay there, but I tried to keep fighting.
I can't believe I had to drink so much to make Zoe forget about that confusion. The girl seemed immune to the effects of alcohol. Plus, I did it to protect a guy who was cruelly rude to me.
"This is your fault... Joshua... Scott. Look at the situation you put me in..." I rolled my eyes. "All of this to protect you. I am... dying. The world looks like a Ferris wheel!" I chuckled.
I stopped walking when I saw Mr. Scott's house was next.
"Thank God!"
A meaningless smile appears on my lips. I open the front gate and walk up to the door. I suspected everyone was already asleep. Luckily, I had a spare key. It was difficult to find the keyhole, but after minutes of struggle, I manage to open the door. I entered and locked it again. I was about to head towards the kitchen to go to my room at the back of the house when I heard a voice sound behind me.
"Do you usually come home this late?"
I turned around and saw Joshua. Again. I looked at him a little frightened. The kitchen was dimly lit, only receiving the reflections of the streetlights in the garden.
But I didn't care what Joshua said, because anyway, the next day I wouldn't remember any of his words.
I watch him walk through the kitchen entrance, putting his hands inside his robe. He was coming from the direction of the living room.
"Have you been drinking?" he asks after examining me.
I immediately remember our earlier encounter and how rude he had been.
"So what...? What if I have?"
"Don't you care about your commitments?"
"And do you...? Do you care?"
"You have bad breath."
He said, making me look at him a little indignant, but soon his words became hilarious because of the effect of alcohol.
"Ha... Ha... you say that as if you've never been."
"Alcohol? No."
"Ugh..." I make a face and take steps closer to him. "You're a jerk... Scott. How dare you treat someone rudely when she cares about you?"
"When?"
"You're going to say you don't remember?"
"I don't know."
I saw a pout form on his lips as he shook his head, making me laugh mockingly.
"Come on? Me, drinking and... You, losing your memory?"
"You're really drunk. How many glasses did you have?"
"Some... Nine... Ten... Eight... Maybe... Glasses... Of beer? Ugh... Don't meddle in my life."
"What?"
"That's right! What did you hear?" I get closer, almost letting our bodies touch. I tilt my head up and give him a nasty look. "As you told me, remember? Don't... Meddle... In... My... Life..." I let out a laugh between my lips.
"You'll end up waking everyone up."
"I don't care... Huh..."
I feel a sharp pain in my head.
"Alice?"
I let out a brief laugh at his facial expression. I rolled my eyes, feeling my eyelids getting heavy and everything turning black.
Joshua Scott I drove back home. Throughout the way, my thoughts felt like they were going to explode my head. Even in Los Angeles, where I thought I could have some peace, it was able to make me relive the past. Everything reminded me of her. And even though I didn't want to, something or someone, like Marcel, for example, made it happen. And I was already tired of it. I urgently needed something or someone to occupy my mind. "Alice?" I heard Betty's voice as soon as I entered the house. "Oh. Joshua." She smiled. "Are you back already?" "It's a bit late and... I'm a bit tired." I smiled weakly. "I understand..." "Where's Alice?" my father approached. "She needs to lock the back gate." he said. "A-Alice?" Betty spoke sounding frightened. "She... she's sleeping. She... said she was quite exhausted, so... I let her go." Her nervous smile could be perceived from afar. "But - emphasized. "I'll lock it. Don't worry." She affirmed and then left the room. I chuckled when I realized her
I felt something burning against the right side of my face. I squeezed my eyes shut and automatically turned to the other side of the bed, trying to make that flash of light go away from my face. My head was almost exploding. I had the result of a whole night of drinking, which I realized was painful the next day. I tried to open my eyes, but it felt like blades were being shoved into them every time I tried. I was feeling sick. And that same pain in my stomach remained. Had I consumed an excessive amount of alcohol and was going to die? At that moment, while I was drinking with Suzy, it didn't seem like I had already gone past the second glass, I only realized it when I had already gone past the sixth. I was definitely lost. Working with a hangover, and now what? No one could know about my wrongdoing. Not even Betty. I would have to find a way to hide and be as discreet as possible. I sat on the bed and felt my head weigh like a bowling ball. I ran my hand through my hair and observ
Alice Collins I poured the coffee into one of the cups and picked it up with my hands. I took a sip of the dark liquid, being careful not to burn my mouth. I stared at the kitchen counter, beginning a process of reminiscing about past subjects. It had been three years since I was in Los Angeles, having a good time away from my mother and younger sisters. But those years did not prevent me from keeping in touch with them. Whenever I could, I talked to my mother via video call. My sisters were growing up more and more. Sometimes I felt bad for not being present in their growing up phase. I always wondered why my mother didn't want to come and live here in Los Angeles. Perhaps it would be easier for her and my sisters. She could find a good-paying job, and the girls could have a good education. Maybe she thought it would be a bother since I practically lived in Mr. Scott's house. But the last time we spoke, my mother promised me that even though she couldn't come here, she would let my
So, does that mean Joshua had relations with every girl who worked at his house? That explains his surprised tone when he met me. I can't believe I could have easily been a target. In fact, I was a target of Jack. Did he really want to use me to show off that he was better than Joshua? How childish! "What are you doing there?" I freeze at the sound of Joshua's voice. Clearly, my attempt to hide behind a plant pot didn't work out very well, even though it was big. After being discovered, I come up with an excuse. "I was cleaning." I hear Joshua laugh through his nose, disbelieving. "Did you hear our conversation?" I let out a sigh and remain behind the plant pot. "Look, I know what you might be thinking about what you heard. But that's just Jack being stupid. What happened was a long time ago. It won't happen again." But I don't know if I liked hearing that, because unbelievably, a part of me would like to be desired by a guy as sexy as him, even knowing it could just be a flin
After hours of travel, we finally landed on British soil. The day was dawning in London. Traveling with Joshua was a tranquil experience, as we barely saw each other inside the Jet. He had work to do, which forced him to look for an exclusive space for himself, and thus, we didn't have to exchange any contact. And I took advantage of the trip to sleep, as I had been awake almost all night. Joshua's private driver was going to take us to his apartment, a bit far from the city center, as Joshua said that the further away, the more magnificent the view would be. After a few more minutes of travel, the car stops in front of a building with almost countless floors. The entrance was decorated with artificial grass and reflectors that harmoniously illuminated the place. I get out of the car, right after Joshua, and follow him into the building, heading towards the elevator. Upon entering, Joshua types in the top floor, which momentarily surprises me, but after remembering the jet, the pent
"What are you doing here?" I ask, astounded.Joshua takes off his coat and runs his right hand through his hair, shaking it a little in an attempt to get rid of the excess water."Mrs. Taylor said you left the apartment upset without saying where you were going," he explains."Upset?" I arch my eyebrows. I presume she didn't tell him the whole story."I just came for breakfast," I justify."Do you know what time it is?" he gives me a critical look.Joshua points to a wall clock above the table where I was sitting. I quickly shift my attention to my phone screen and realize that I had made the mistake of not adjusting the time to London's time zone. It was already late afternoon."I swear I didn't realize."Joshua shakes his head and chuckles."What possessed you to wander around a city you don't know?" he asks incredulously.Recalling the event that forced me to leave the apartment, I sigh and lean back on the sofa. I wasn't going to tell Joshua that I had been bothered by an issue th
After dinner, Joshua collected the dirty dishes to wash, and I offered to help dry them. While working together, we were able to talk a little more. For the first time, I was able to have a conversation with Joshua."So, we have an artist here?" he joked."I wouldn't say I'm exactly an artist. But I love art, and... Without trying to sound conceited, my drawings are amazing," I said, grinning mischievously. I leaned against the counter and swung the napkin in my hand before tossing it over my shoulder."Look, Miss Collins, I'm a bit skeptical. I'll believe it when I see it," he said, finishing the last piece of glassware and turning to place it on the counter next to me."Pathetic," I retorted, teasingly. "One day I'll make you a drawing, Mr. Scott.""I'll be eagerly waiting," Joshua said, smiling. Suddenly, for no apparent reason, a overwhelming silence fell over us. We continued to gaze at each other, but didn't say a single word. It was as if we were in a trance, with only a few gi
I open my eyes slowly; the room was beginning to be invaded by the gradually rising sunlight. And once again, I woke up suddenly from my sleep. I vaguely observed the room where I slept, without a definite direction. Something was bothering me, and it wasn't the fact that I had slept poorly at night, it was something more intense, improper, perhaps. I was still ecstatic from the dream I had had.Until then, it might not mean anything, but at the same time, I could say that I was starting to give in to Joshua, and that, in no way, should happen. With only a few minutes left until sunrise, I decided to start getting ready to go to Joshua's company. And, as I remembered that I would have to spend the entire day with him, a cold malevolent feeling invaded my stomach.I try to push all those thoughts away. I shake my head and take a deep breath, getting up from bed and walking to the bathroom. I undress and turn on the shower, alternating the water temperature to a little warmer. The rain
