Fourteen Chapter

Just when I started to have a really good time in the Tetra mansion, it was brought to an end. Chyna and her husband returned from their couples trip, in quote. Rain had asked me to accompany him to the airport but I lied that my sister asked to see me and I was going to be at the hospital for a while. I knew I was going to be awkward around the family, seeing that I had slept with both father and son. I also didn't want to act in a way that would raise Chyna's suspicion, or anybody else's for that matter.

After Rain left, I headed to the hospital to pay Anna a short visit. It's been a little over a week since I last saw her and I felt like a terrible sibling. I stopped by the Mart to get her a few snacks and some food. After David's last visit, he wired me some money, actually a lot of money, for what he tagged “being a good girl". It meant he got away with whatever he did that night and his wife was still clueless. If this was what I got for keeping my mouth shut, I was going to milk it until I no longer could.

I eventually arrived at the hospital. My first stop was the doctor's office. “Hello doctor." I greeted when I opened the door after a small knock.

He looked up from the paperwork he was engrossed in. A smile then formed on his lips. “Raya," he got up from his chair. “It has been a while since I last saw you."

He gave me his hand for a brief handshake. “I know," I mumbled as I sat down. “I've been a little occupied."

He gave me a short nod. “You work your ass off to support your sister," his tone was as tender as his eyes. "You must not have any time for yourself.” he added when he sat down.

All I could do was nod with a shy smile. In a way, he was right. I was working my ass off to support Anna. How else would David have given the hospital a huge sum for her treatment?

“Thank you," I muttered, taking a pause to clear my throat. “How is Anna doing?" It was the actual reason I was sitting in his office.

“Oh, right," he temporarily looked away from me, searching his table for what I assumed was her file.

“Anna is doing very well," he said as he pulled out drawers out of his desk, still searching for her records. He finally found them. “These are her paper records." He announced to me.

I nodded like I didn't know, waiting for him to look through them. “Her records show she has been making significant improvements," he paused to flip through the documents.

A smile formed on my lips. All I wanted was for Anna to be alive and well. She was all I had left in this cruel world. “However," I heard him say, breaking into my thoughts. My heart sank as I looked at him. “Improvements have been really slow."

“Slow?" I repeated, not because I didn't hear him, but because I didn't understand how that was a problem. Improvements were improvements to me.

“Yes, slow," he replied. “You see for her," he closed the file, intertwined his fingers together and rested them in the document. “Improvements need to be steady and fast."

When he paused, I still didn't understand a word he said. “It's like this," he continued. “Her immune system needs to be far ahead of the cancerous cells so they don't sneak up on her," I let out a silent “oh" after his explanation. “And a surprise attack is never good."

The seriousness in his tone put some fear into me. "Is there anything we can do to quicken the process?” I asked in an anxious tone.

“I'm afraid not, Raya," he gave me a weak smile but it didn't hide the hopelessness behind his eyes. “We can only hope that her body becomes stronger."

All I could do was nod. I was too worried to speak. We sat in silence for the next few minutes. I was worried sick about Anna. I couldn't even imagine the world without her in it.

“Thank you, doctor." I mumbled when I found my voice.

"You're welcome.”

I shook his hand again as I stood up to leave. I attempted to take my hand out of his grip to turn and walk away when I noticed he held onto me. I turned to look at him.

"Allow me to take you to dinner sometime, Raya.”

He had an innocent smile on his face that made him look really attractive. Anna had been at this hospital for over a year and he had been her doctor from day one, not once did he ever show any signs of interest in me. Now suddenly, he wanted to take me out to dinner.

Aren't you married, doctor? I wanted to ask. He was as old as David, maybe even a little older, there was no doubt he was also married, and with kids. I never viewed him as a cheater or the kind of doctors who slept with their patients, but now that he made a move on me, my respect for him went down the drain.

I gave him the sweetest smile I could muster. “I'm sorry, doctor," I muttered, nicely pulling my hand out of his grip. “but I'm in a committed relationship."

Both corners of his lips rose in the form of a broad grin. “Of course," he looked away. "Silly of me to think that a beautiful girl, such as yourself, is without a man.”

I was fed up with his conversation and couldn't wait to get out of his office. I picked up the items I got from the mall, heading straight for the door.

“He must be a lucky man to have you."

I heard him say, when I opened the door. There was something about the atmosphere that made me very uncomfortable. The look in his eyes, the smile on his face, it sickened me to my stomach. I said nothing in response as I headed out of his office. The moment I shut the door behind me, I knew I needed to confront his friend about this little encounter.
