Disoriented, he faltered just enough for me to land another punch and loosen his grip on the gun. By now, I was in the backseat, throwing punches and kicks as we wrestled. Finally, I managed to wrap my arm around his neck, cutting off his air. He stretched his arm out, desperately reaching for the gun on the floor, but it was useless. He passed out before he could grab it, his body slumping, lifeless for the moment. Angie was now cornered and panicked as she stared at me with terror.

I shoved the unconscious man aside and picked up the gun.

"Now, shall we continue our little drive?" I asked.

In a flash, Angie bolted from the car like a devil on fire, stumbling across the abandoned lot toward the warehouse entrance. I stepped out after her, wiping the blood from my mouth and letting her put some distance between us—this cat-and-mouse game suited her, I supposed.

And then, a gunshot rang out.

Angie collapsed to the ground.

I turned around, and there she was: Julia, steady as a rock

I couldn't quite believe I was still functioning after the intense morning I'd had. My nerves were frayed, and even the thought of another cup of coffee felt dangerous—any more caffeine and I'd be jittering out of my skin. The safe house was secure, but the ticking clock only made my anxiety worse. I'd been glancing out the window every few minutes, hoping to catch sight of Lucius. Still nothing.Just then, my phone rang. I spun around and grabbed it from the side table. My heart dropped a little when I saw that it was Amanda instead. She had been asking for a video call, and I answered as planned. The arrangement was simple: if Lucius didn't call, the plan was in motion; if he did, things had changed. It was as complicated as it sounded. With a final glance at Alice, who was still absorbed in her show, I stepped into the hallway and took the call."Hey, Marianne..." Amanda's face appeared, her eyes swollen and cheeks blotchy, like she'd been crying."Hey, Amanda... How did it go

I tilted my head up without loosening my hold on him, noticing the split on his upper lip, smeared with fresh blood.“You’re here in one piece,” I murmured, relief coursing through me. “Keep coming back in one piece, and I’ll make sure you get a warm welcome every time.”He smiled, brushing a gentle hand across my cheek, though his knuckles were bruised and swollen. The relief that swept over me was immediate, a balm to the anxiety of the day.“Is it over?” I asked, hope threading my voice. “Did you get them both?”“Only Angie,” he admitted, his expression turning grim. “Vincent slipped away. We were close.”My relief faltered, and I took a step back. “So now what? Where is she? Are you using her as bait?”“Julia’s got her in custody,” he explained. “Though I’d love to say she’ll crack under interrogation, we don’t think she knows his whereabouts. Vincent abandoned her. It’s clear he has no use for her anymore—he’s almost alone.”“Almost?”“Our theory is that he’ll be trying to

I climbed the steps of one of the Nichols' buildings on Lucius's arm. Dressed to the nines, we were ready for whatever awaited us at this glamorous event, where the so-called elite gathered for a night of high society. It was a buzzing evening with us trailing behind one couple and another right behind us, all inching forward toward the building's entrance.Thankfully, Lucius's team had been incredibly thorough. They had not only managed to add our names to a guest list we'd definitely not been on before, but they had also placed several undercover agents throughout the event. We entered the building with ease and made our way toward the grand ballroom where the gala was set to unfold.Curiously, this wasn't my first time at this gala; I had attended last year as Matt's date. That night had been... memorable for all the wrong reasons. The event was dull, and Matt's parents had treated me with such hostility that even thinking about it made me cringe.Looking at the scene before us—a

As if running into Elizabeth at this cocktail reception wasn't uncomfortable enough, having Matt, Leonardo, and Lennon join the equation made it downright unbearable. We all fell silent, staring at each other in almost comic awkwardness. Matt's irritated gaze locked onto me while Lucius stared daggers at his cousin and uncle."Introductions aren't necessary here, I assume?" Elizabeth attempted a friendly tone."Yes, they're family," Matt replied, forcing a tight smile that he aimed in my direction.I felt small under Matt's accusing gaze. The irony was rich, considering his ties to the criminal Kramer family were all but confirmed."What are you doing here, Lucius?" Leonardo asked, confusion written across his face."I could ask you the same thing. What brings you to this place?" Lucius countered.A dangerous thought crossed my mind—what if the Browns were involved in shady business as well?"We were invited by the hosts. If you had kept in touch with the family, you'd know we'r

Then... a loud, thunderous sound erupted through the hall.It was so deafening I thought I had imagined it, but no, because the blaring fire alarm kicked in right after. The room descended into chaos, whispers swelling into panicked voices and people frantically pushing for the exits."Please make your way out calmly through the marked doors, everyone," the host instructed over the mic, his voice straining to keep order.I had a sinking feeling. Something bad was happening, but I couldn't abandon Lucius's family. Their being here wasn't a coincidence—it was a trap. Together, we started moving toward the crowd that was pressing out of the hall. I forced myself to walk calmly while Lennon and Leonardo seemed disturbingly unfazed, almost as if this were just another Saturday evening."Should we split up to find them?" Lennon asked Leonardo."It might be better that way. One of us can look for Liam, and the other for Lucius," Leonardo replied."No!" I raised my voice, struggling to b

Lucius Brown's P.O.V.The metallic taste of blood hit my tongue, sharp enough to yank me back to consciousness. I tried to move my hands, but they were bound tightly to the arms of the chair. I couldn't budge. I was barely coming to my senses, every nerve still raw from the beating I'd taken. Another one to add to the collection.I couldn't lift my head; my neck didn't want to cooperate. The floor below blurred in and out of focus, and as I tried to clear my mind, I pieced together how I had ended up in this mess. Everything had been going to plan—until I had seen my cousin and uncle at the gala. That was already bad, but finding out that Liam was here too, hidden somewhere with our enemies? That was a disaster. My relationship with Liam was... complicated. And that was saying something, considering the mess of connections I had accumulated over the years. Let's say he had made it onto my "inner circle" list that used to only have Leonardo in it. Over time, though, I had begrudgingl

Lucius Brown's P.O.V.I returned to the spot where I had woken up, grabbing another chair and settling into it as I feigned unconsciousness once again. I tucked my hands behind my back just as the door creaked open."Here he is. What do you plan to do with him?" I heard Matt's voice, sharp with contempt.A sickening, raspy laugh followed—one that made my skin crawl. It was a laugh I would never forget. Vincent."The rat has walked right into my hands," Vincent sneered. "I need some time alone with him, enough to make him pay for what he has done.""That's not possible," Matt replied, his tone tight. "You're due on the helipad soon. The fire alarm is set to trigger in minutes..."Helipad? Fire alarm? I pieced it together quickly—an orchestrated evacuation, a staged fire to cover Vincent's escape. They wanted to make him disappear as if he were dead, and judging by the chaos, they intended to leave casualties behind. It wouldn't have mattered if I had shown up or not. They'd had th

But... Matt didn't know that."What makes you think anyone would blame me for an accidental death?" I threatened as I watched him tremble in terror. "You could end up trapped in a room here and eaten alive by the flames. How would that be my fault?"Matt's lips quivered. I had him."Take me to them. This is the last time I'll ask."He finally relented, turning slowly toward the door. We stepped over Vincent's lifeless body and descended one floor. The fire alarm was blaring even louder now. Matt stopped at a door in the hallway, fumbling to get a key out of his pocket while I kept my gun trained on his head. His hands shook, but he managed to unlock the door. Relief flooded my chest as I saw Marianne crouched on the floor with Liam. Both of them looked up in shock, their expressions shifting from fear at seeing Matt to pure relief when they saw me.Matt had served his purpose, so it was only fitting to deliver a solid blow to the back of his head. I admit that I put more force be

Sara Brown's P.O.V."Didn't we agree you wouldn't come, Mom?" Richard asked, his voice low and disappointed."Richard, you too?" Victoria exclaimed, her voice trembling with a mix of hurt and indignation."What else did you expect, Victoria?" Julian interjected, crossing his arms. "We practically had to beg Sara for permission just to see Matthew. Meanwhile, you've done nothing to make amends yet here you are, demanding things. That's not how this works.""Do you want me to apologize to Sara?" Victoria's voice cracked as she looked at me, her emotions on full display.I would never trust Victoria, and I certainly would never leave my son alone with her unsupervised. But in this moment, her vulnerability chipped away at some of my hardened resolve. Life had been so good lately, so full of joy and love, that my heart no longer had room for resentment."You don't need to apologize to me," I said calmly. "The people you owe an apology to are your sons."Victoria's eyes widened, her

Sara Brown's P.O.V.Six months later.Becoming a mother was one of those adventures I never knew I needed, but I'd never been more grateful for taking the leap—especially with Lawrence by my side. Now, here we were, standing in front of a flower-draped altar nestled in the woods of the Brown family estate.Getting married in this spot felt symbolic. It had been our sanctuary as kids, the place where we'd escaped from the grown-ups and shared secrets. It was fitting that my best friend, the boy who'd been by my side through thick and thin, was now becoming my husband.Behind us was a small gathering of family and close friends. The Browns—ever-expanding with a small army of kids—were all present, as were a handful of Lawrence's relatives, including his brothers, Richard and Julian. We'd kept the guest list to just sixty people, making this a more intimate celebration than anyone would've expected from a Brown-Lewis wedding.Still, it was perfect. Everyone we loved was here. And the

I looked at our baby's tiny face, and the urge to cry overwhelmed me again. He was absolutely perfect."Are you going to keep crying?" Sara teased with a mischievous grin. "If you don't stop, I won't give you another one."I wiped my tears immediately, not wanting to take any chances. She burst out laughing, her radiant energy filling the room."So," quickly shifting topics, she leaned forward slightly, "what are we naming him? We agreed we'd know when we saw him. I've got a name from the shortlist in mind. Do you?""I do," I replied, smiling."Okay, let's say it together," she suggested, and I nodded. "On three. One, two, three—""Matthew!" we both exclaimed in unison. We stared at each other before breaking into matching grins. Sara started clapping in excitement over our perfect sync. I laughed at her enthusiasm, but something on the hospital TV caught my attention—a news report about yesterday's gubernatorial election. Images of Isabelle, the winner, flashed across the scree

Lawrence Lewis's P.O.V.Three months later...Just when I thought I couldn't be any happier with Sara loving me, life proved me wrong. Every day felt like a new peak of joy. A few months ago, I believed I had reached the ultimate high when she accepted my proposal during our trip to Finland. I'd asked her under the northern lights in a private and intimate moment, just the two of us—just like our entire relationship had been. The fallout from canceling my engagement to Emma had been relatively manageable for me. There were no financial or legal repercussions, and I narrowly escaped the disgrace of almost becoming the son-in-law of a criminal like Mark. But to say I avoided all drama would be a lie. The rumors and gossip surrounding how Sara and I had gotten together were relentless.I was usually a calm man, but any criticism aimed at Sara, accusing her of "breaking up" my previous engagement, turned me into a beast. Sara would always tell me to ignore the noise, that only we knew

I stood there frozen, feeling every gaze lock onto me. It was as if time had stopped. No one spoke, no one moved—they just stared. Sweat started trickling down places I didn’t even know could sweat.“Hi… how’s everyone doing?” I asked, my voice hesitant.I braced myself for the shouting, the dramatic exclamations, the scolding even. Instead, the extroverted ones in the room simply smiled at me while the quieter ones went back to what they were doing, almost as if nothing had happened. The initial wave of attention just… evaporated.“As I was saying,” Uncle Lucius continued, picking up right where he’d left off, “if you don’t finish your vegetables, we’ll give them to the lion in the forest.”My jaw dropped. This table—the entire Brown family—was completely unfazed. Even Lawrence had that knowing smile on his face, almost as if he’d expected this exact reaction. Before I could recover, Aunt Lucia and Aunt Marianne came over and pulled me into tight hugs.“You look gorgeous, Sara. A

Richard's voice broke the silence as he gathered his courage. "We'd like to add Duke and Monarch for me, and the boat for Julian. With that, we'll be ready to sign the agreement."I rubbed my ears, almost certain I had misheard."The horses and the boat? That's all you want?" Lawrence asked, his tone tinged with disbelief."Yes," Julian confirmed, his voice hesitant. "We believe... they're of great sentimental value to us. And they were gifts. They just... weren't officially transferred to us."Lawrence's eyes darted between them as if trying to confirm whether these were the same brothers he'd been fighting with."That's it?" he repeated, his suspicion evident."That's it," Richard said, though his discomfort was plain to see."What are you two plotting?" Lawrence asked, narrowing his eyes. The twins exchanged confused glances."Nothing?" Julian said, his tone growing defensive. "What are you plotting? You told us you wouldn't give us anything but then sent this offer out of

I couldn't help but notice the sadness etched onto Lawrence's face. He'd always said he wouldn't give his brothers anything. Yet here he was, not only offering them a portion of the inheritance but also bracing himself for their inevitable demands and negotiating with them."Wouldn't it have been easier to just offer them exactly what you were willing to give from the start?" I asked as I leaned against his shoulder, wrapping my arms around him. His sadness was palpable, and it was breaking my heart. Just moments ago, he'd been so happy. "Just say 'Take it or leave it' and then forget about them."Lawrence sighed, his gaze distant. "I know them. And I know myself. I can't lay the blame for all my hardships on them like I do with Victoria. Despite what I said during the will reading, I know they deserve more than what my father left them.""You have a heart of gold, Ren," I murmured, kissing his cheek. "Don't let those brats melt it down, okay?"He chuckled softly, though his sadnes

I swayed my hips rhythmically against his body, the two of us joined in that intimate connection we'd rediscovered nearly every night since the chaos with a certain corrupt official had come to an end.As Lawrence neared his release, he called my name, his voice rough with passion. I teased him by sucking on the thumb he'd slipped into my mouth, which was all it took for him to shut his eyes tightly as the force of his climax overtook him. I followed him into that blissful release just a moment later.Utterly satisfied, I collapsed beside him on the bed, both of us completely naked, basking in the warmth of each other's bodies. My breathing was still ragged as Lawrence shifted closer, his hands roaming gently over my hair, my chest, and finally, my stomach. The way his hand lingered there told me exactly what he was about to ask—again."Are you sure you're comfortable with this?" he asked."No. It was terrible. I never want to have another orgasm for the rest of my life," I replied

"What's going on here?" I asked Sara suspiciously."Just go with the flow," she replied, opening my car door with a grin.I hesitated but decided to follow her advice—or at least try. After exchanging cheek kisses, I walked over to where Jason was waiting. I tucked the envelope with my test results into my pocket. As I reached him, he took my hand, and we started walking up a hill in the park."When did you ask Sara to bring me here?" I asked, curious."That's a secret," he said with a chuckle. "And since you two are such close friends now—""Close friends?" I interrupted, raising a brow. "You think we're really friends?""That's how it seems. You smile a lot when you're with her," he replied."Do I?" I considered it for a moment, warmth spreading through my chest. "Maybe we are."Jason smiled but kept silent. As we climbed one of the hills, I was taken aback by the breathtaking view of the city spread before us. But even more surprising was the blanket laid out on the ground,
