"What do you mean by that? Could you be more specific?"

"If what happened the other night was a figment of my imagination and you're sure of it, why are you avoiding me?"

"I'm not avoiding you. Why would I? You must have misunderstood."

"Have I? You were supposed to provide the market study of the property yesterday. You didn't," he remarked with a slight reproach.

"I sent it through my colleague, Amy," I corrected, puzzled.

"I haven't received anything as far as I know," he responded.

I couldn't afford a slip-up like that. I searched on my laptop, found the study, enlarged it on the screen, and handed it to Lucius.

"Sorry for the inconvenience. Here it is for you to review... or would you prefer a printed copy?" I offered softly, watching his reaction.

Lucius agreed to review it on my computer, but the number of questions he had about the graphs forced me to stay close, pointing out what he wanted to see. I could barely concentrate with such proximity, my heart racing while I

"I'm not convinced, Mom. I don't look like myself. Do you think Andrew will like it? I want him to cry when he sees me walking down the aisle," she complained, adjusting her neckline. "Do you like this dress, Sis?"I did like the dress. Would I give my approval to something that looked good on her? Absolutely not."It's nice..." I pretended the dress bored me and said it out of obligation.Amanda caught on immediately and grew more impatient."You don't like it, do you?" she asked, sounding insecure."It's not that I don't like it, it's just... Can you pull off that cut without looking, you know, voluptuous, in that area?"I was referring to her pregnancy, which sent Amanda into another crisis. She started ranting about how she was going to look like a whale and how she already looked like a whale. Her breakdown was so intense that the assistant holding the box of tissues quickly rushed over to help with her tears. I hid a smile and went back to my phone, searching for things abo

"Is he? Do we know him by any chance? What does he do for a living?" she inquired suspiciously."He is. I don't know if you know him, but he's an investor from Cameria," I lied."An international investor? How old did you say he is?" she asked with a malicious tone that tasted bitter to me. "Is his age the problem? Is he close to your father's age?""No. But he is a bit older than me. He's 34," I asserted without backing down."He sounds like the perfect man. What else do you want to boast about without suspiciously giving me his name and surname?""I could boast about his blue eyes like the night sky, his thick black hair, or his height. But what's more important to me is why you doubt my words so much. We want to keep our relationship as private as possible," I argued, snaking around her questions. She laughed at me."I don't know who you're trying to fool, Mary. But stop and quit upsetting my daughter while she is preparing for the most important day of her life. We both know

  • My Boss, My Husband   Chapter 19

It was interesting how the human mind worked during a manic episode. There I was, having proposed marriage to my boss in a fit of rage. He didn't improve my embarrassment by reaching to his desk and pressing a button to lower the blinds automatically, shielding us from prying eyes. Then, he clasped his hands in a prayer-like gesture. The silence in the office was killing me with nerves."Did you come to work drunk?" he asked patiently."I'm not drunk. N-nor am I high," I defended myself, stuttering."You sound and act like an intoxicated person to me." He leaned his face on one of his hands. "But that didn't bother you when you slept with me that night, did it?" I asked. At this, Lucius became serious, straightened up, and looked at me darkly. From accessible to armored, I watched him transform in a matter of seconds."If you want to go down the path of blackmail, you'd better give that up now. You and I both knew what we were doing. We both enjoyed it. Or will you say I took a

"I'll be submitting my resignation this afternoon. I'm sorry for my behavior; it was unprofessional," I mentioned, tears still falling.I heard a very deep sigh."There's no need," he said, sounding resigned. I looked at him hopefully. "We've all made bad decisions and had bad days. You don't deserve to be fired for one. But I won't accept your marriage proposal. It's ridiculous, Marianne."My chest loosened, relieved, and I could breathe normally again."Yes, it was ridiculous. I don't know what I was thinking," I reflected, playing with the handkerchief, then remembered something immediately. "There's something of yours I want to return."I didn't specify what I wanted to return. I left his office, pretending nothing was out of the ordinary, and took the envelope from my briefcase. Returning, I slid it across the desk. Lucius took it and opened it. He pulled out the card with his phone number and was surprised to see the $1000 he had given me. I had carried it with me for days,

A week had passed since the disaster at the bridal shop, and my wicked stepmother hadn't stopped pestering me for the name of my supposed fiance. But all I'd gotten from that infamous dating app were twenty dick pics, five offers for casual sex, and countless hours of frustration. I had no one to take to that party.I pulled at my hair, desperate and stressed. These emotions were so overwhelming that I realized I had yanked out a strand of hair, and I stared at it with the urge to cry."I'm worried about you. I mean it," Jenna said, sitting beside me in my cubicle. She handed me a coffee. "A mocha, to whet your appetite so we can go have lunch like the rest of the floor."It was lunchtime, and there was only one colleague in the private video conference booth at the end of the hall. I focused on my computer."I'm not hungry. I need to find a man for tonight," I told my friend."Still on that? Aren't you busy with our project?""I'm juggling both. Tomorrow I have a meeting with ou

"Nothing. I'm going to the equestrian club. It's Amanda's engagement dinner," I explained."What are you planning to sabotage this time? Don't tell me you've given up—that would be so boring of you."I looked at him, pressing my tongue against my cheek. I felt ridiculed and mocked, but there was no lower point for me to reach. If he wanted drama, I'd give him drama."I'll show up with an attractive fiance who will act like I'm the most charming woman in the world and make me appear sane, Mr. Brown," I bragged.I could see the smile in Lucius's eyes as he drove. The breeze tousling his hair made him even more irresistible."Did you blackmail this one too?" he joked cruelly."No, I paid him in advance," I retorted without guilt. He looked astonished, then burst into laughter. I didn't find it funny that he found this madness amusing. A woman had to do what she had to do. I clutched my purse to keep from blushing at the absurdity of what I had just said, keeping my head high."A w

Amelia was the name of my detestable stepmother. But I loathed her name so much that I tried not to remember it. It was the name my mother used to repeat incessantly when she was ill, blaming her for the destruction of her marriage. Even as a child, I understood that my father was more to blame for my mother's suffering than his mistress. Yet, my mother was fixated on blaming her. Amelia, that homewrecker. Amelia, that foreign tramp. Her name was like that of a ghost I preferred not to summon. And now, though she was a ghost to me, her reaction to Lucius was unsettling. It was like he was her ghost."Amelia," my father discreetly reprimanded his wife. "That's not an appropriate question to ask my successor.""What do you mean, your successor?" she asked, horrified, turning to Serge. "You never mentioned that.""Since when have you cared about the names of my business partners, woman?" he replied disdainfully, then turned to us. "Did you exchange words when he came to our house to c

"Don't be rude, Andrew. He's my guest. He came with me," I informed him, trying to keep him in check."He's your boss. He doesn't need to come with you anywhere," Andrew snapped, barely containing his anger.I rolled my eyes and walked past him."Don't be ridiculous. Control yourself," I whispered as I passed by.I took my seat at the long table where they directed me, and Lucius sat next to me. The table was filled with guests, including my father's wife a few seats away, and the engaged couple further down. I thanked the heavens that I didn't have to sit directly across from or next to any of those pests."Your sister's future husband is a pervert. He wants to get into your bed the moment you turn your back," Lucius whispered in my ear.Hearing his voice so close sent pleasant shivers through my body. I wasn't sure if it was the mojitos or the white wine I was sipping that made me feel so light and warm."Like you?" I teased playfully. "It's a shame both of you will be left wa

Sara Brown's P.O.V."Didn't we agree you wouldn't come, Mom?" Richard asked, his voice low and disappointed."Richard, you too?" Victoria exclaimed, her voice trembling with a mix of hurt and indignation."What else did you expect, Victoria?" Julian interjected, crossing his arms. "We practically had to beg Sara for permission just to see Matthew. Meanwhile, you've done nothing to make amends yet here you are, demanding things. That's not how this works.""Do you want me to apologize to Sara?" Victoria's voice cracked as she looked at me, her emotions on full display.I would never trust Victoria, and I certainly would never leave my son alone with her unsupervised. But in this moment, her vulnerability chipped away at some of my hardened resolve. Life had been so good lately, so full of joy and love, that my heart no longer had room for resentment."You don't need to apologize to me," I said calmly. "The people you owe an apology to are your sons."Victoria's eyes widened, her

Sara Brown's P.O.V.Six months later.Becoming a mother was one of those adventures I never knew I needed, but I'd never been more grateful for taking the leap—especially with Lawrence by my side. Now, here we were, standing in front of a flower-draped altar nestled in the woods of the Brown family estate.Getting married in this spot felt symbolic. It had been our sanctuary as kids, the place where we'd escaped from the grown-ups and shared secrets. It was fitting that my best friend, the boy who'd been by my side through thick and thin, was now becoming my husband.Behind us was a small gathering of family and close friends. The Browns—ever-expanding with a small army of kids—were all present, as were a handful of Lawrence's relatives, including his brothers, Richard and Julian. We'd kept the guest list to just sixty people, making this a more intimate celebration than anyone would've expected from a Brown-Lewis wedding.Still, it was perfect. Everyone we loved was here. And the

I looked at our baby's tiny face, and the urge to cry overwhelmed me again. He was absolutely perfect."Are you going to keep crying?" Sara teased with a mischievous grin. "If you don't stop, I won't give you another one."I wiped my tears immediately, not wanting to take any chances. She burst out laughing, her radiant energy filling the room."So," quickly shifting topics, she leaned forward slightly, "what are we naming him? We agreed we'd know when we saw him. I've got a name from the shortlist in mind. Do you?""I do," I replied, smiling."Okay, let's say it together," she suggested, and I nodded. "On three. One, two, three—""Matthew!" we both exclaimed in unison. We stared at each other before breaking into matching grins. Sara started clapping in excitement over our perfect sync. I laughed at her enthusiasm, but something on the hospital TV caught my attention—a news report about yesterday's gubernatorial election. Images of Isabelle, the winner, flashed across the scree

Lawrence Lewis's P.O.V.Three months later...Just when I thought I couldn't be any happier with Sara loving me, life proved me wrong. Every day felt like a new peak of joy. A few months ago, I believed I had reached the ultimate high when she accepted my proposal during our trip to Finland. I'd asked her under the northern lights in a private and intimate moment, just the two of us—just like our entire relationship had been. The fallout from canceling my engagement to Emma had been relatively manageable for me. There were no financial or legal repercussions, and I narrowly escaped the disgrace of almost becoming the son-in-law of a criminal like Mark. But to say I avoided all drama would be a lie. The rumors and gossip surrounding how Sara and I had gotten together were relentless.I was usually a calm man, but any criticism aimed at Sara, accusing her of "breaking up" my previous engagement, turned me into a beast. Sara would always tell me to ignore the noise, that only we knew

  • My Boss, My Husband   Chapter 407

I stood there frozen, feeling every gaze lock onto me. It was as if time had stopped. No one spoke, no one moved—they just stared. Sweat started trickling down places I didn’t even know could sweat.“Hi… how’s everyone doing?” I asked, my voice hesitant.I braced myself for the shouting, the dramatic exclamations, the scolding even. Instead, the extroverted ones in the room simply smiled at me while the quieter ones went back to what they were doing, almost as if nothing had happened. The initial wave of attention just… evaporated.“As I was saying,” Uncle Lucius continued, picking up right where he’d left off, “if you don’t finish your vegetables, we’ll give them to the lion in the forest.”My jaw dropped. This table—the entire Brown family—was completely unfazed. Even Lawrence had that knowing smile on his face, almost as if he’d expected this exact reaction. Before I could recover, Aunt Lucia and Aunt Marianne came over and pulled me into tight hugs.“You look gorgeous, Sara. A

Richard's voice broke the silence as he gathered his courage. "We'd like to add Duke and Monarch for me, and the boat for Julian. With that, we'll be ready to sign the agreement."I rubbed my ears, almost certain I had misheard."The horses and the boat? That's all you want?" Lawrence asked, his tone tinged with disbelief."Yes," Julian confirmed, his voice hesitant. "We believe... they're of great sentimental value to us. And they were gifts. They just... weren't officially transferred to us."Lawrence's eyes darted between them as if trying to confirm whether these were the same brothers he'd been fighting with."That's it?" he repeated, his suspicion evident."That's it," Richard said, though his discomfort was plain to see."What are you two plotting?" Lawrence asked, narrowing his eyes. The twins exchanged confused glances."Nothing?" Julian said, his tone growing defensive. "What are you plotting? You told us you wouldn't give us anything but then sent this offer out of

I couldn't help but notice the sadness etched onto Lawrence's face. He'd always said he wouldn't give his brothers anything. Yet here he was, not only offering them a portion of the inheritance but also bracing himself for their inevitable demands and negotiating with them."Wouldn't it have been easier to just offer them exactly what you were willing to give from the start?" I asked as I leaned against his shoulder, wrapping my arms around him. His sadness was palpable, and it was breaking my heart. Just moments ago, he'd been so happy. "Just say 'Take it or leave it' and then forget about them."Lawrence sighed, his gaze distant. "I know them. And I know myself. I can't lay the blame for all my hardships on them like I do with Victoria. Despite what I said during the will reading, I know they deserve more than what my father left them.""You have a heart of gold, Ren," I murmured, kissing his cheek. "Don't let those brats melt it down, okay?"He chuckled softly, though his sadnes

I swayed my hips rhythmically against his body, the two of us joined in that intimate connection we'd rediscovered nearly every night since the chaos with a certain corrupt official had come to an end.As Lawrence neared his release, he called my name, his voice rough with passion. I teased him by sucking on the thumb he'd slipped into my mouth, which was all it took for him to shut his eyes tightly as the force of his climax overtook him. I followed him into that blissful release just a moment later.Utterly satisfied, I collapsed beside him on the bed, both of us completely naked, basking in the warmth of each other's bodies. My breathing was still ragged as Lawrence shifted closer, his hands roaming gently over my hair, my chest, and finally, my stomach. The way his hand lingered there told me exactly what he was about to ask—again."Are you sure you're comfortable with this?" he asked."No. It was terrible. I never want to have another orgasm for the rest of my life," I replied

"What's going on here?" I asked Sara suspiciously."Just go with the flow," she replied, opening my car door with a grin.I hesitated but decided to follow her advice—or at least try. After exchanging cheek kisses, I walked over to where Jason was waiting. I tucked the envelope with my test results into my pocket. As I reached him, he took my hand, and we started walking up a hill in the park."When did you ask Sara to bring me here?" I asked, curious."That's a secret," he said with a chuckle. "And since you two are such close friends now—""Close friends?" I interrupted, raising a brow. "You think we're really friends?""That's how it seems. You smile a lot when you're with her," he replied."Do I?" I considered it for a moment, warmth spreading through my chest. "Maybe we are."Jason smiled but kept silent. As we climbed one of the hills, I was taken aback by the breathtaking view of the city spread before us. But even more surprising was the blanket laid out on the ground,
