Olivia
~•~ I blinked in confusion. “Why do you want to get divorced?” I asked but he didn’t respond. My eyes scanned through the papers and my pupils dilated in shock as I read the content. Alex had already signed his part and all that was left to finalize the divorce was my signature. I was confused because I wasn’t expecting to get a divorce anytime soon. Sure, our marriage wasn't every couple’s dream, but we got along pretty well. We tolerated each other. We were able to sleep next to each other at night. “What is the meaning of this, Alex?” I asked angrily but Alex still remained quiet.“Why are we getting a divorce? When did you get these papers?” “Today.” Came his short flaccid response. I narrowed my eyes in confusion. “It is because of her, right?” I sniffed, holding back the tears that were threatening to fall down but Alex scoffed. “You want a divorce because of her, right?” I added, my voice cracking slightly. He finally confirmed my suspicions. The necklace he got at the auction was for his ex girlfriend, Tricia. All these while, he had been preparing the divorce papers for me. He didn’t talk about it with me. He didn’t think I deserved to know prior to preparing the papers. Did he even regard me as someone important in his life? “Don’t you think it’s time we stop wasting each other’s time?” He seemed too calm for the words he just said and I could feel my heart breaking each passing second. My vision got blurry when I heard him say those words. “Don’t you think it’s time we stop wasting each other’s time?” I repeated his words in a whisper, trying to make sense of it. I was trying to process everything that was going on because it came as a surprise to me. When I looked up at him with a puzzled expression on my face, he continued speaking. “Olivia, it is clear you do not love me, you never did.” He cleared his throat and my lips parted in disbelief. “Wh…what?” I sputtered as I tried to form a coherent sentence. “What do you mean?” I asked. I loved Alex, I had always loved him. But there had always been a rift in our marriage because I’d always felt he didn’t completely move on from his ex. “I’m just trying to make things easier for us, for you.” “Of course, why didn’t I see this coming?” I asked rhetorically with a scoff. “You’ve been looking for a way out so you can rekindle your love with her? You’ve been waiting for the opportunity and you think today is just perfect!” I yelled at him while he sat there calmly. “Olivia, this has nothing to do with my ex.” He said. “I haven’t even seen Tricia in years.” I laughed but there was no humor in it.“So what’s the reason? Why do you want to do this?” I couldn’t go with the bull shit reason that he was doing this for me. If it was for me, why could I feel my heart breaking with each word that left his lips? “You forgot our anniversary, you gave me mediocre presents. That’s to show that you do not value this marriage. You never did.” He was calm; too calm for the kind of conversation we were having. It was messing with my head. I was confused for a second because he also forgot our anniversary but I was the one to blame? I knew the presents weren’t really thoughtful but he could have been a little more appreciative instead of dismissing my efforts just like that. I didn’t know what to get him because he literally had everything he wanted. “I’m sorry about the anniversary and the presents but that isn’t a good enough reason for you to end the marriage,” I told him, hoping he would change his mind about the divorce papers. “Olivia, just sign the papers. I’ve thought about it for a while and I’ve already made my decision.” My throat immediately went dry as I swallowed. Five years of my life were about to go down the drain, and for what? I didn’t know what to say or do anymore. I couldn’t stand there any longer, I couldn’t look at him anymore. My world was falling apart and I couldn’t do anything to stop it. Even if we didn’t have the perfect marriage, I didn’t want a divorce. I never thought about a divorce. It was heartbreaking and I felt really betrayed and hurt. With the file in my hand, I stormed out of the room. Alex looked like he had his mind made up and nothing I say was going to change anything. I wiped my eyes with the back of my hand to prevent the tears that welled up in my eyes from falling down my face as I trudged down the stairs. When I got to the living room, I picked up my phone from the table. I had left it there while waiting for Alex to return home. I needed to call my best friend to let her know what was going on. “Hey girl, I haven’t forgotten about the party, I’ll be there in time,” Sandra said as soon as she answered the call. She thought I was calling her to remind her about the party Alexander’s company was hosting the next day. “That’s not why I called you,” I responded, my lips trembling. “Why are you sounding like that? Is everything okay?” She sounded concerned but her voice was also laced with curiosity. I hesitated for a moment and tried to steady my voice before responding. I didn’t want to break down and cry while talking. “This evening.” I cleared my throat and resumed speaking. “This eve…evening..” Sandra interrupted. “What happened this evening?” “Alex gave me the divorce papers.” I rushed out, knowing I’d probably cry in a few seconds if I didn’t say it already. She was quiet for a few seconds as though it was hard for her to process as well. “What divorce papers? Why would he do something like that?” “I have no idea, Sandra,” I released an exhausted sigh. “He said I didn’t love him and we should stop wasting each other’s time.” A lone tear traveled down my cheek and I wiped it with another sigh. “I’m so sorry, Olivia,” Sandra said sympathetically. “What are you going to do? Didn’t you give him the anniversary presents? Why is he upset?” Sandra and I had picked out the presents when we went shopping earlier in the day. I paused for a few seconds and blinked before responding. “He wasn’t even impressed by the presents.” My heart ached as my conversation with him replayed in my head. “I had a feeling he wouldn’t like it when you picked it.” Sandra was right. She had asked me to think of something else but I was in a hurry and had to get something fast. “Five years of my life, Sandra. Five whole years!” I let out a humorless chuckle. “If the divorce is what he wants, then I’ll sign the papers and move on with my life,” I added. “I’m so sorry you have to go through this, Olivia.” Sandra sympathized with me. “But are you sure you want to sign the papers? Are you sure you want to give up on your marriage? “Yes, I’m sure.” I lied. “It doesn’t even feel like I’m married anymore, so there is no use fighting for it.” I added, biting my lips. Sandra and I talked for a few more minutes before the call ended. The divorce papers were still in my hands. I didn’t want to sign them but there was no use holding on to someone who wanted to get rid of me. Just as I reached out to the table to get a pen, I heard footsteps from the staircase and Alex appeared. “Have you signed the papers yet?” He asked. I rolled my eyes at him and showed him the pen I had just gotten from the table. “I’m about to sign it,” I replied and placed the paper on the table to sign. “Don’t sign it yet.” He stopped me and reached out to take the pen from my hand.Olivia ~•~I paused for a moment and looked at him. Why was he asking me not to sign the papers anymore? Did he change his mind about moving on with the divorce? There was an awkward silence for a few moments and I looked at him in anticipation, waiting for an explanation. “Let’s wait until after the party tomorrow.” He said, breaking the uncomfortable silence. “We have to appear as a couple at the event.” I swallowed hard. I expected to hear something else. I expected him to say he had changed his mind about the divorce. “Okay,” I said without asking further questions. After that, I dropped the papers and the table and walked out of the room. Alex tried calling me back but I ignored him and walked into the kitchen. I couldn’t believe he wanted me to act like everything was okay. He wanted us to pretend in public. I poured myself a glass of water and took deep breaths to calm myself down. My mind kept on racing with different thoughts. So I was still a married woman but not for
Olivia~•~As I finished getting ready for the party, I stared at my reflection in the mirror and a stunning woman stared back at me. My blonde hair was styled into a messy updo with some loose strands falling down my face. The long red gown Alex and I had carefully selected a few days ago hugged my curves in all the right places. My bright blue eyes sparkled like gold against the bold of the red gown. I looked confident and undeniably sexy. Even if everything was falling apart, the least I could do was to look stunning in public. Satisfied with my look, I wore my pair of gold stilettos and matched it with my gold bag. Alex had already told me we had thirty minutes to leave, so I went downstairs immediately after I was done with my makeup. We were going to the party together. “You look so beautiful.” He complimented me as I got into the back of the car. I didn’t respond and just managed a half-smile. I was getting divorced so there was no need for me to get flattered by his compli
Olivia ~•~“What the fuck?” I seethed angrily through gritted teeth. Amanda looked at me with a puzzled expression while Sandra had a sympathetic expression on her face. “Why are you so upset?” Amanda asked but I ignored her question. She had no clue what was going on. “When was this taken?” I asked curiously, my voice filled with urgency. “Yesterday,” Amanda responded in a confused voice. I looked at the picture again and my face twisted in disgust. Alexander’s ex-girlfriend, Tricia, was in town. Everything started making sense. It became clear why he asked for a divorce. “I ran into her at the mall and I took photos just so you would believe me when I tell you,” Amanda added when I didn’t say anything else. When I first met Alexander, I looked into his life and discovered he had just left a serious relationship months before he met me. Their photos were everywhere on the internet. They looked like the power couple everyone would dream to be. I could recognize Tricia anywhere
Alexander ~•~ I left Olivia alone at the table to welcome my friends and some of the other guests. I was gone for a while but I knew she was good when I looked over and saw she had company. Her best friend and sister were seated with her. I spent a few more minutes and when I finally decided to go back to meet her, I saw her walking out of the hall with Sandra. Olivia looked so upset and I couldn’t help but wonder what the reason was. I tried holding her back but she ignored me. I let her go outside because I didn’t want to cause a scene. Confused, I walked over to the table, and luckily enough her sister, Amanda, was still there. “What’s going on with Olivia?” I asked Amanda but she remained silent. “Is she okay?” I added. “I don’t think so,” Amanda responded and I narrowed my eyes. “What’s the problem?” I asked curiously. Olivia had agreed to act like everything was okay at the party and she seemed fine when we first came in. “She found out your ex-girlfriend
Olivia ~•~My best friend woke me up the next morning. I was even surprised at how I slept peacefully the whole night. “Are you ready to go back home?” She asked and I sighed when I realized what I was going to face when I returned. “Just a minute,” I said and she nodded before making her way out of the room. I switched on my phone and the first thing I did was to call Amanda because she left me a text and asked me to call her immediately after I saw it. “Hey.” She said in a slightly groggy voice as she picked up the call. “Did I wake you up?” I asked when I heard how sleepy her voice sounded. “You asked me to call you and it looked urgent.” “Yeah yeah, I wanted to talk to you about Alex.” I sat upright on the bed. “What about Alex?” I braced myself for what she was about to say. It was probably about the mess I caused after leaving the party. “I think he was telling the truth about Tricia.” She said and my face scrunched up in disgust. She was my sister and she was meant to
Olivia ~•~“What do you even want? You gave me the divorce papers and now you’re talking about how I’m about to throw five years of our marriage down the drain?” Alex stopped and ran his hands through his hair. “It’s just funny how you jumped at the opportunity the first chance you got.”My lips parted and I blinked. I couldn’t believe he was trying to play the victim card. “I know what you’re trying to do, Alex.” I pointed at him in disbelief. “You got caught, right? I realized you did it because of Tricia, and now you’re trying to put the blame on me. Like everything is my fault.” “For the umpteenth time, I had no idea Tricia was in town and this has nothing to do with her!” “I don’t believe you, Alex,” I screamed at him. “You’ve always wanted Tricia, haven't you? She’s back in your life, you can have her now!” “I’ve told you numerous times, I didn’t want Tricia. It was always you.” He said, his voice filled with frustration. “You can’t let go of just one mistake? It’s all in t
My chest tightened as I read the headlines. "Billionaire Alexander Burke Spotted Cozying Up with Ex-Flame Tricia: Rekindling Old Flames?"My eyes scanned through the article, they even mentioned the fact that I wasn’t present at the dance during his party. The photo accompanying the piece showed Alexander laughing with Tricia. My eyeballs shot out when I noticed Tricia was also wearing the necklace from the auction. I felt like I’d been punched in the gut and I couldn’t breathe. My mind was racing with different thoughts I couldn’t process. My father and siblings were staring at me, their faces mixed with shock and curiosity. “What’s the problem?” David asked, breaking the uncomfortable silence. Before I could say anything, my mother answered. “Her husband is having coffee with another woman.” Her voice was laced with a mixture of disdain and disappointment. She sounded like it was my fault. Like I was the one who drove him to his ex and asked them to meet up. “You can’t even keep
Olivia ~•~I felt a surge of frustration and anger run through my veins. “You’re not going anywhere with me and there’s nothing to fix,” I said, my voice steady. “I’m done trying to please you, I’m done letting you control me. I’m getting a divorce and there is nothing you can do about it.”The words rolled off my tongue like a train with no brakes. From their puzzled expressions, I could tell they were stunned by my response. Without giving them a chance to say anything else, I turned around and walked out of the room, banging the door behind me. Amanda and David rushed out of the dining room to meet me when they heard me walking out. They both had worried looks on their faces. “What happened there?” David asked, his voice laced with concern. “What did you say to them? What did they say to you?” I didn’t want to stay in the house any longer. “I’m going back home, you’ll hear it from your parents.” I dismissed them and picked up my bag from the table before making my way out of t
Riley Burke ~•~After I was done talking to Mason, I went to meet Rowan because he asked me to meet him after my class. We were meant to go back home together. He was waiting for me in the driveway. I settled down in the front seat of the car and fastened my seatbelt. As we drove back to the house, I contemplated telling Rowan about the situation with Mason. But I wasn’t sure if I should say anything. Rowan would be so upset and probably tell my parents about it. I didn’t know if I wanted anybody to know what I knew Mason personally. It was best if I kept it away from them for a while. After an exhausting drive, we arrived at the house. “Is Belle still pissed at you?” I asked Rowan as we both stepped out of the car.He shook his head. “Yes, I messed up big time and I’m not sure she’ll forgive me easily,” Rowan admitted, running his hands through his hair. My lips parted and I blinked. “What? How did you mess up?” My curiosity got the best of me and I couldn’t resist asking him
Mason Craig~•~After Riley left, I remained in the office for a few more minutes. I needed some time to think and clear my head. I was certain that Riley didn’t believe anything I said and I had no idea how to make her see that I was being completely honest with her. Even if she eventually comes around, things will still be weird between us because of my parent’s behavior. After meeting so many shallow people, I finally found someone worth starting something with again. But it was already crumbling before it could even start. I didn’t have any other classes, so I decided to head back home. I locked the office and made my way back to my car. My uncle was a professor at the university, so he gave me a spare key. He asked me to go there whenever I needed a break from the crowd. He was one of the reasons why my father allowed me to attend Columbia University. He wanted me to go to a different country for college, but I didn’t want to go far away. Most times, I do regret my choice. I
Riley Burke ~•~I was already pissed when I saw Mason walking into the class. But his stupid text only fueled my irritation more. He still had the guts to ask if he did something wrong. Whenever I was upset and couldn’t do anything about it, my legs automatically started shaking. Liam noticed and tried his best to calm me down.I hated the fact that I was about to crash out in public. At first, I didn’t want to respond to his text. But out of annoyance, I responded to him and then blocked his number afterward.I didn’t want him to contact me anymore. After what felt like an eternity, the class was finally over. At one point, I even wanted to walk out of the class, but Liam persuaded me to stay. As everyone left the class, I wanted to rush out before Mason could get the chance to speak to me, but he was faster than me. I knew I wanted to have a conversation with him to demand answers but I wasn’t interested anymore. My daddy was going to take care of everything. “What do you want
Mason Craig ~•~After thinking about what to do for a while, I decided to tell Riley about it. I could imagine how devastated she would be if she found out about it from someone else. I didn’t want her to think I was part of it in any way. I knew telling her was me betraying my parents, but I didn’t care. The truth was going to come out eventually. I didn’t want it to look like I was enabling their behavior. At first, I wanted to call Riley and talk to her about it over the phone, but since we had a class together later in the day, I decided to leave it. I would have a conversation with her after our class. A few hours later, it was time for me to leave for school. I was already running late, so I grabbed my keys and bag before rushing down to the car. While I was on my way to school, I couldn’t stop thinking about the damage my parents had caused. They were so hungry for power and success, it wasn’t healthy. Even if they were giving me the silent treatment, I was still determ
Riley Burke ~•~As I got to school, I contemplated going back to my dorm room or going to class. I wasn’t sure I was in the right head space to see Mason. My mind was spinning with different thoughts and I was laced with anger. I couldn’t believe someone would betray me like that. I felt so stupid and used. I didn’t even know what to say to him. As I stepped out of the car, I decided to call Harper first to ask if she was in the room. I didn’t want to go to meet in an empty room, it would just fuel my frustration more. Harper didn’t answer her phone. I was guessing that was in class and couldn’t take the call. Letting out a frustrated sigh, I decided to call Amelia instead. I let out a relieved sigh when Amelia answered on the first ring. “Hey, what’s up? Are you in class?” I asked with a hint of urgency in my voice. “No, I’m in the dorm room.” She replied. “What’s going on?”I didn’t want to talk on the phone. “You’ll see me soon.” I ended the call and made my way to the dorm
Riley Burke ~•~It was finally time for me to leave for school. The driver was already waiting for me downstairs. I took one last look at my reflection in the mirror. I was satisfied with my look and my outfit for the day. I wore a pink sweatshirt and a short leather skirt with boots. I grabbed my coat and bag and then arranged my hair before heading downstairs. I only had one class, so I was kind of thrilled about it. Plus, I’ll also get to see my friends and Mason. As I walked down the stairs, I ran into my mother and Caroline discussing seriously in the living room. They were so engrossed in the conversation that they didn’t hear me walk down the stairs. “What’s going on?” My voice diverted both of their attention to me: I was able to hear some of what they were saying, so they didn’t see the need to keep it away from me. Plus, I deserved to know. I asked my father to keep me in the loop and he agreed to do so. “They finally found the people responsible for tarnishing the com
Mason Craig ~•~I could barely get any sleep the previous night because I couldn’t stop thinking about what Tristain had told me. He confirmed my fears about my parents being the ones responsible for Burke’s company’s rumors. I was highly disappointed. A part of me was also scared. Why did it have to be them? How would Riley feel if she eventually found out that my parents were the ones who were responsible? My mind was spiraling with different thoughts. I contemplated confronting my parents but they were already not speaking to me. I wondered if I should call Riley and tell her about it, but that wouldn’t be a smart move. It would be as though I was betraying my family. I hated that I was in such a position. I couldn’t even think properly. I didn’t know the right step to take. I didn’t even want my parents to know that I was friends with someone from the Burke family. I had no idea how they would react to it. Even if I wanted to keep the truth away from Riley, nothing stays h
Riley Burke ~•~“Stop asking because I’m not coming with you.” “Riley, please.” “Rowan, no. I don’t have any class until noon and I’m not ready to wait in the dormitory. I’ll just go with one of the drivers later.” “I’ll do anything you want, please.” Rowan had classes in the morning but I didn’t have any class until noon. Normally, Rowan would be pleased to go to school without me, but this time he had his girlfriend over and they got into a big fight. They were meant to drive back to school together but he wanted me to accompany them because he didn’t want the drive to be awkward. I always asked that he should stop putting me in the middle of their problems, but he never listened to me. It was always like this with them. They’ll have a big fight, ignore each other for a while, then make up again. Even when I mistakenly suggested that they part ways, he made it seem like I was just being a hater. I liked Belle, even if we weren’t exactly friends. I liked her as my brother’s g
Alexander Burke ~•~I was surprised when my publicist sent me a screenshot, showing me that Riley was responding to the trolls on the internet. I didn’t blame her for exchanging words with them because what they were saying was cruel and hurtful. But I always told my kids to ignore the people on the internet. I even advised them to stay away from social media, but I knew that part was impossible. I decided to have a talk with Riley about it after we were done with the funeral. When I returned to the house, I called her to my room. “Hey, Daddy.” She greeted me with a warm smile as she walked into my room. Riley sat down beside me on my bed. “Riley, how are you doing?” I asked. I was genuinely concerned about the kid’s mental health. They were going through so many things and I wanted to make sure they were doing well. Riley shrugged. “I’m holding up. Are you good?” She asked, scratching her head. I nodded. “Yes. I wanted to talk to you about something.” I reached out to her han
