There was something eerie about my place as I approached it.
The entrance door was ajar.
I walked closer and stepped foot into the rooftop apartment. Since we didn't have a living room, I walked through the lobby between my room and Jake's and I was in my room instantly.
I knew it when I saw it.
I had been mugged.
It was obvious from all indications. The littered papers all over, the upturned shelf of books, and opened drawers told of a person's frantic search.
I quickly threw my bag on the floor and ran into Jake's room. It was the same. No difference at all.
Whoever came in here must have been looking for something.
This surprised me because what could anyone be looking for in a house like mine? I did not own a lot of valuables but I began checking for stuff that could have been taken away.
I could not find anything missing so I returned to my bag and fished out officer Steve's card. He did say I should call whenever something suspicious happened and this, this was hella suspicious.
He picked on the third ring.
"What da actual... are you okay?!"
He said when I told him what happened.
"Yes, I am fine. Just a little bit disoriented." I told him.
"Hold on a second. We will be there in a few minutes."
He ended the call after that.
I waited for a few minutes and then I began to second guess calling him. What if he thought I did it? As a cover-up for what occurred the night before?
I fished for my phone and put a call through to Jake. It was unanswered. So I left him a message after the beep.
"Jacob Matthews! It's been a week since I last saw you. Call me when you get this. I just found out that we've been mugged and we're moving!"
It was not exactly a lie. It was a potential truth for we will have to move soon if it is discovered that Leo was behind this. Even though I do not know how I was to begin looking for a house so suddenly.
Sophia came to mind and I wanted to call her and update her on the happenings but remember she has work to do, so I decided not to. I sat down on a bench outside the house and waited. It must be taking them long because the station was a central one and so, it was located in the main town. A few more minutes passed by before I began to hear wailing sirens.
They parked at the bottom of the building and climbed their way up to my place.
"Are you okay?" Was the first thing officer Steve asked when he saw me. I gave him a firm nod. Then he asked, "is there anything missing?"
"Not that I noticed."
"Get in there. Try to see if you can get anything." He ordered the men with him and three of them went inside the building. He turned to me and said, "Did you call on the community police?"
"No." I shook my head. "You already told me to call if anything was suspicious so I simply called you. Although, I didn't expect anything to happen so soon. Do you think he did this?"
"Leo? Well, I can't put it past him. But the question is why."
"Exactly. Why? I do not have a plethora of gems stacked away in my basement. Grap, I do not even have a basement."
Officer Steve laughed.
"Don't worry. We're going to find out who did this. You just relax."
I nodded and sighed. Just then, one of the men came out of the house. I and Steve looked towards him and he shook his head slowly, from side to side.
"Nothing at all?" Steve probed.
"Blank. Not even a single hair strand." He replied.
"It's clean. As usual. Typical of Leo." Steve said, frustration written all over his face. I looked at the reporting officer, in a black jacket and it hit me.
"Oh, shit!"
I hurried inside the house with a startled Steve on my tail. Ignoring his questions, I ransacked the messy room for the black jacket I brought home with me from Sophia's place.
It was gone.
"Can you tell me what it is you're looking for? Are you missing something?"
"It's gone."
"What's gone?"
"The jacket. The jacket he covered me with."
Steve grimaced and his jaw clenched. "It was him. It was Leo. He came to retrieve his cloth. Damn!"
Amused, I said, "if that is the case, then he did not have to do this. Why turn my house into a bird cage when the jacket was lying pretty on my bed?!"
"Right? He could have just taken it and left. Maybe, that's just why he came but seeing the state of your house, I can't help but say someone else broke into your house. Crap, this is running me mentally."
"Someone else?"
"Yes. Because Leo doesn't visit the likes of you, no offense. He has nothing to take from here." I heaved a relieved sigh. If what officer Steve was saying is true, then I need not worry anymore. I just needed to be careful in case of common thefts by neighborhood thieves. "Well, except if his jacket is the treasure he sought after here."
"Alright then, I guess this is settled. He simply came for his jacket. We can hope he won't be coming back." I said, picking up one of my neurology books from the floor.
The nerve of the guy to upturn my house in this manner and render my treasured books helpless on the floor.
"That scumbag!" I screamed.
Officer Steve laughed before he said, "take it easy. I am going to inform the county police about this and have men watch here for a while. You, on the other hand, fix your lock or get a better one. Since he got what he wanted, we can hope that this doesn't happen again."
I gave him a nod and began to arrange my books.
"Thank you, officer Steve. I'll call you if anything else happens."
He left after that with his boys.
It took a lot of time to clean up the house. While I was arranging Jake's room, I saw that his personal computer had been smashed.
Not knowing how to explain it all to him when he got back, I sat down on the floor and cried. I had been holding it in all day and I just could not believe that a guy I met at the club was the cause of all this.
No, not him. I was the cause. I brought this upon myself.
When I was done wailing and cleaning, I informed the building owner of what happened and without one of his usual grumblings, he said he'd call a locksmith. Surprised, I thanked him and walked to work, drowned in my thoughts.
At the hospital, nothing of great significance happened. It was one such night that we did not get any emergency patients and all the in-patients were without many problems.
So, instead of working, I spent the night relating to Beverly what happened the night before.
"Girl! That's unlike you. You should have hosted a rooftop party at your place and brought together some friends to celebrate. I bet that would have been much more fun." She stated sincerity in her eyes.
I agreed with her.
Better still, I should have stayed at home and slept off.
"I know right? But well, it's happened but there won't be a repeat." I told her, just before I went to make my third run on the wards.
It was dawn soon and I clocked off work, drained and tired. I walked back home, trying to shake the past few events off my mind. I wondered what the director would say when he saw me. Once again, my subconscious said it was to scold me sternly and I tried to mentally prepare for it. I do not like being scolded or chastised and it was why I always played by the rules.
When I got home, I took a look at my phone. Jake hadn't replied to my voicemail nor did he call or leave me messages.
"That brat!" I said, in frustration, dropping the phone.
I sauntered into the small bathroom in my room to take a bath before I hit the bed.
It took me a while, as I washed off the stress of the past few hours. I hoped earnestly that the thief stayed away and for my life to get back to normal. Back before Sophia convinced me to go to the club.
When I was done bathing, I wore my old bathrobe and walked to the mirror. I took my face cream and proceeded to apply it to my face when I saw the image.
Fear gripped my throat and I ceased moving.
He was here.
Right behind me.
Slowly, I turned around and met his gaze. He stood still, in the blackness of his clothing and peered into my eyes.Holy fuck!I recognize those eyes. Those empty eyes sucked a looker in. My face cream fell from my hands and I jerked. "What do you want?" I said, stepping away from his front. He doesn't say a thing. The mask over his face does not let me see any expression on his face. "You got your jacket, so why are you back here?" He took a step toward me and instinctively, I made a dive for my phone that was on the bed. I began to frantically punch on the screen, looking to call officer Steve. "How did you find my house?" I asked again. Maybe I should have called Sophia and slept at her place. He kept walking toward me and my hands trembled as I continued to back away. "Stay away!" I yelled. Then I hit the wall next to the dressing mirror and stopped moving. He was before me in a blink of an eye. My mind was threatening to burst with fear and so, I let out a scream. He stampe
It took me a minute to gather my thoughts together. What have I just done? I slapped my hands over my face and blew air threw my mouth.Yep, it's official. I am crazy. I let a man I barely know make out with me. And I enjoyed every bit of it.But that's not even the problem. I knew now that the guy was a thief and yet, my body relaxed in his hold. Maybe I developed a mental condition after that night at the club.Pulling my robe closer to my body and tying it tightly to hide the imprints of Leo's hands on it, I hurried to the door. Just when I was holding the knob to open it, it creaked open with force.Jake's face appeared like he was taking a peek. Then he opened it wider."What were you doing? You were taking all day." He said, stepping into the room.Retracting, I gave him room to walk. "I said I was coming. Why are you so much in a hurry?" "As I said, you were taking all day and I was going to die of anxiety. And look," he pointed at me. "You're still in that fucking old robe af
The POV of Leo:It was not easy to let her go. That day and even today. When I watched her, her life was a simple routine. I mapped out her schedule and stuck it to my brain cells. She would go from hospital to home and home to hospital. Very few times did that change and it was when she stopped by a grocery store or went to see that crazy friend of hers, Sophia. So it came as a surprise to me when that evening, after being at Sophia's, instead of heading home, I saw her climb into her friend's car, all of her back exposed by the skimpy dress she had on. It was a very startling sight for me as I have only ever seen her, unlike Sophia, in hospital scrubs, wide tees, round glasses, and pants. Never have I seen her in a dress and that too, the type she had on. And the shoes. I was greatly amused when she struggled to walk in them. Curious as to where they were headed, I followed their car and it took me right to THE WREAKIN'. I suspected it, halfway to the place. It was th
"Hallow-hospital?" I manage to croak out after I stared at the man for a full minute. He must be cracking a late evening joke and if that was it, then he was not being funny at all. "I never asked for a transfer.""I know." He said, reclining on his chair. "Look, Debby, you're one hell of a doctor. I think here is far too small for your potential.""Let me be the judge of that sir," I answer, forcefully. "Let me decide whether or not I want to leave here."There was no way in God's name I was leaving this part of town to work in a hospital like that. Hallow-hospital? The name alone brought me memories. Memories I'd rather keep at the back of my psyche. If I brought them to the fore, I'd be broken, all over again.Mr. Grey looks at me, his fingers in a cross in front of his face. He is not saying anything."Mr. Grey, I do not want to leave the community hospital. I like my job here. It's close to my house and I can save a lot. Plus, I am already so used to everyone here. It'll be hard
It's been hours and nothing strange happened yet. When I walked back home, I half expected that Leo would be in my room, awaiting my return from work with great anticipation, so we can pick up right from where we stopped. But I returned home to meet the house cold and empty, just as I left it.Although I felt stupid, I could not help looking around my room and Jake's, in my bid to check if Leo was there. I even checked the bathroom as well because who knows? He might have gotten into the house through the tiny window high up on the wall in there.Disappointment filled my heart after my search. He was nowhere close. As I began to prepare for the night, it dawned on me that I was treading dangerous paths. I was wholeheartedly willing to be in the company of a renowned thief that was wanted by a lot of people. Even private security agencies run by the rich people he had stolen from were after him as well.Yet, I felt at ease with him. I felt that he would not do me harm. Although I can
I gulped heavily. I wasn't expecting her answer to be so sharp. It cut through me like a hot knife through the rubber. "So, he kills and stuff like that, huh?" "Of course, a guy like him would kill. Ever seen a thief that has high moral holdings?" My dad used to say that just like good things are related, bad things are found closely stuck together. On the general moral bar with which bad acts were judged, I suppose stealing and killing were sitting pretty much close to each other. That means that there is a possibility that Leo is also a murderer. I gulp down heavy saliva. He could kill me. I could as well be the most unlucky lass in the whole of Gayville. "Why are you asking though?" Sophia's voice cut through my thoughts. "Are you scared he'd come back for you?" "What? No... No." I stutter." No, I was just curious." "Don't fret, darling. As you said, he only came to your place to retrieve his jacket. The policemen could have gotten hold of it and perhaps, gotten somethi
"Hello." I return the greeting, pretending that I wasn't very interested in his face, which I just spent the last ten seconds gawking at. It's a miracle the glass cup doesn't slip from my hands. I saw a flicker of what is think is a surprise but maybe I am wrong because it was gone as soon as it showed.Perhaps, he was just shocked by my looks. If that was it, then my goal was near attainable. He will be out here in a few minutes. But how can a human have a face with that jawline? So defined and manly? It reminded me of Leo's jaw and how it felt under the stretch of my palms. I could continue to look at it, all day. But then, I don't. I simply look towards my phone that I placed on the table earlier and tapped it on with a finger. The time read 5:13.For a date that was scheduled to be way earlier, he sure took his time."You must have waited for long." He remarked, not the slightest hint of remorse in his tone. Then he took a seat opposite me, setting that face right before me.I
"What's in there?" I ask, my voice failing me. What if it's like a letter bomb but in this case, a package bomb?"Is that a joke?" Jake says, his eyes on the door he was opening. "You ordered them. I've been standing here for the last twenty minutes, waiting for you to come back.""You should have called me.""I did. You were not reachable."He picked up the two packages that sat in the corner, each wrapped in brown paper. The door creaked open when he opened it and held it in place with a broad shoulder to enable his free passage. I wanted to say to him to leave the stuff outside but what was going to be my reason? My younger brother will stare at me in that funny way he looks at me when he thinks I'm doing or saying something stupid and then still proceed to take the stuff in.Who could have sent them and what was hidden away by their packaging wraps? I was eager and at the same time, scared. And how the fuck did they get my brother's number? Jake struggled to get the materials thr
