"The police station?" I asked, eyes wide open. "What for?"
"We have a couple of questions for you miss." The man stated.
"Why can't you ask me them now? Is this regarding what happened yesterday night at the club? I already told security what happened. You could even take a look at the cameras."
"About that, you will have to give an official statement at the station. But that's not why we're here."
"Why then are you here?" I asked again, my eyes darting around. There were two of the officers, apart from the one talking to me. Even without uniforms, they still looked very much like uniform men, scary and full of command.
"Exactly my point Debby. I do not know what you were up to yesterday but I was surprised to see the police pull up here looking for you. Did you get into something bad?" The hospital director asked before I had the chance to say anything. "This has never happened."
"I was at the club," I answered.
I heard him gasp. As well as Beverly and Tristan, who were the receptionists on duty. Beverly even went as far as covering her mouth with her hand, her eyes almost popping out of their sockets.
It must have been a shock to them that I was at a club. To save them the extra shock of why I was there, I simply added, "There, I had a kind of a fight with a pervert. I suppose that's why they are here." I turned to look at the officer and back at the faces of my colleagues. Other people who stood there consists of patients, visitors, and people I did not directly work with like the cleaners.
"What are you all standing around, gaping like fishes at?!" I suddenly heard Mr. Grey, the hospital director yell out. "Get back to your posts you lots! It's too early in the morning to engage in anything but work." Everyone scampered away, whispering as they went, except Beverly and Tristan who remained standing because they were at their posts.
I was skeptical. If they got the guy who was looking at me through a hole in the restroom, what more do they need me for? Even if I was to go write a statement, they could have simply called me over.
Coming all the way here, by themselves and in numbers, even though little, it felt like I was being arrested.
"You have to come with us, Miss." The huge man repeated.
I gave him a nod. I turned to face Mr. Grey. "I'll be right back. They just want to ask me some questions."
"Alright. You go on ahead. Head back here and straight to my office when you get out of there."
The police officer led the way and I followed, while the other two guys walked behind me. They were not saying anything but their close hawk eyes that were fixed on me made me feel like a criminal.
I have never been summoned by the police. They never had to come to take me away like a dirty criminal too so I was wondering what this was about exactly. This cannot only be about yesterday's event.
I was fit into the back of the Van with an officer on both sides. The third one, the one who addressed me, sat in front of the driver.
It was a weird Monday morning and I felt it was going to be an abnormal one, the direct opposite of the day I thought I would be having. I tried to pull out my phone to call Sophia or Jake but the officer next to me, as kindly as he could, told me to not touch anything and stay put.
"Are you sure you're the police?" I ask, fear creeping into my voice.
"I believe I showed you my badge and an identification card a while ago." The front man responded. "I am Steve Johnson. Hamburg central police station." He flashed the ID in front of me again. "We're taking you because we did in fact take a look at the security cameras installed at The wreakin' after the report was made as Bale kept on denying what happened."
"Who is Bale?"
"The guy who looked at you while you took a leak."
"Okay?"
"We needed to see him so anything so we were analyzing the camera recording when something else popped up." Officer Steve informed.
"Okay? "I said again. "What popped up and what has it to do with me?"
"We will have to get to the police station for you to see. We'll be there soon." He simply said, before turning away from me.
With my nerves on steroids, I began to fondle the necklace on my neck. Slowly, I calmed down and kept a clear head.
When we arrived at the station, I was taken to the questioning room by the guys that sat with me at the back. It was an empty room save for a medium-sized table and three chairs; two on one side and one on the other. I looked around, taking in the place. There were four cameras installed, each at every corner of the room.
The room was dark and the white lightbulb in the room shone directly on the table. I was there for several minutes until officer Steve came to me, with a laptop this time.
He placed it on the table and turned it on, clicked some buttons, and turned it around to show me. The video of me staggering toward a part of the club appeared. Then it went black. He turned it again and tapped some more buttons and the next video he showed me was the one where I got help from the strange man outside the club. Down to when he gave me his jacket, disappeared and to the point, I passed out.
"Do you recognize the man in the video? The one who gave your assaulter a vicious kick in the gut?"
"No. I do not."
"From the first video, you were ambling towards a corner of the club. This camera was facing the bar stand and so, if you move away from it, to the other end, you will be in a blind spot."
"Okay?"
"We suspect that you went on to meet this man on that side. Could you please confirm it for me?"
"What man in the first place officer? I do not know who you are talking about."
Officer Steve reclined on his chair and said, "Maybe I started in the wrong way. Now see," he said, sitting upright once more. "The guy in the video is Leo. Leo is a criminal. He is infamous for thieving. Not only that but he is also known for his sheer skill and ability to evade the authorities. Wherever he goes, something shifts. Something is taken away. Yesterday at the wreakin', the club manager's safe was broken in his office. His business ledger and a lot of money disappeared."
"Why are you telling me this?" I questioned, getting the wrong signal.
"We suspect that you went to him in the first video, even though it was not caught on camera. Secondly, outside the club when you were in the situation with Bale, he came to help you. Why?"
"Officer, I honestly do not know what you're talking about. Why would I know why he helped me? He could just be helping a woman in need. Not all criminals are totally evil."
Officer Steve chuckled. "One more thing about Leo is that he is faceless. He would not risk getting caught on camera for anything. However, he did that for you. Even though we still cannot see his face. What's your relationship with him?"
"I do not know this man, I swear. He must have simply helped me since I was in a difficult situation."
"Witnesses say they saw you two together inside the club ugh... doing adults business. Is he your love interest?"
"No, officer. No."
"Then tell me what your relationship with him is like."
"Look, the only man I met at the club yesterday, I was too drunk to have a good look at his face. As you said, I just wanted to do adult business with him and go. That was what I was at the club for. Nothing else."
"Well, we're sorry to say to you that we do not believe that and we think you are affiliated with him."
"Affiliated?! How... what are you even saying?"
"We won't have any choice but to detain you. However, in the meantime, you will have to write your statement about what occurred yesterday. And maybe take time to think about if you want to tell me the truth concerning Leo."
He left the room after that, leaving me gaping at the wall.
Fear enveloped me. My bag was taken from me before I was brought here.I suppose there were rummaging through my things now and most probably, going through my contacts and everything they could lay their hands on.That was not much of a worry, I know they would not find anything. The bigger problem was what I was to tell officer Steve when he came back. Was I to tell him that I was trying to get fucked by a strange man and I did not know that this said man was the thief he is looking for?How was I to utter such gibberish? Most importantly, would he even believe me?When the officer that warned me earlier came to get my statement, I asked him if I could make a call. He said yes and so, when officer Steve came in a while later, he brought my phone.I grabbed it immediately and put a call through to Sophia. She told me we would be here in a few minutes but I am yet to see her.Officer Steve sat before me and peered into my eyes, like a predator that was sure he had his meal right befo
There was something eerie about my place as I approached it. The entrance door was ajar.I walked closer and stepped foot into the rooftop apartment. Since we didn't have a living room, I walked through the lobby between my room and Jake's and I was in my room instantly.I knew it when I saw it.I had been mugged. It was obvious from all indications. The littered papers all over, the upturned shelf of books, and opened drawers told of a person's frantic search.I quickly threw my bag on the floor and ran into Jake's room. It was the same. No difference at all.Whoever came in here must have been looking for something. This surprised me because what could anyone be looking for in a house like mine? I did not own a lot of valuables but I began checking for stuff that could have been taken away.I could not find anything missing so I returned to my bag and fished out officer Steve's card. He did say I should call whenever something suspicious happened and this, this was hella suspicious
Slowly, I turned around and met his gaze. He stood still, in the blackness of his clothing and peered into my eyes.Holy fuck!I recognize those eyes. Those empty eyes sucked a looker in. My face cream fell from my hands and I jerked. "What do you want?" I said, stepping away from his front. He doesn't say a thing. The mask over his face does not let me see any expression on his face. "You got your jacket, so why are you back here?" He took a step toward me and instinctively, I made a dive for my phone that was on the bed. I began to frantically punch on the screen, looking to call officer Steve. "How did you find my house?" I asked again. Maybe I should have called Sophia and slept at her place. He kept walking toward me and my hands trembled as I continued to back away. "Stay away!" I yelled. Then I hit the wall next to the dressing mirror and stopped moving. He was before me in a blink of an eye. My mind was threatening to burst with fear and so, I let out a scream. He stampe
It took me a minute to gather my thoughts together. What have I just done? I slapped my hands over my face and blew air threw my mouth.Yep, it's official. I am crazy. I let a man I barely know make out with me. And I enjoyed every bit of it.But that's not even the problem. I knew now that the guy was a thief and yet, my body relaxed in his hold. Maybe I developed a mental condition after that night at the club.Pulling my robe closer to my body and tying it tightly to hide the imprints of Leo's hands on it, I hurried to the door. Just when I was holding the knob to open it, it creaked open with force.Jake's face appeared like he was taking a peek. Then he opened it wider."What were you doing? You were taking all day." He said, stepping into the room.Retracting, I gave him room to walk. "I said I was coming. Why are you so much in a hurry?" "As I said, you were taking all day and I was going to die of anxiety. And look," he pointed at me. "You're still in that fucking old robe af
The POV of Leo:It was not easy to let her go. That day and even today. When I watched her, her life was a simple routine. I mapped out her schedule and stuck it to my brain cells. She would go from hospital to home and home to hospital. Very few times did that change and it was when she stopped by a grocery store or went to see that crazy friend of hers, Sophia. So it came as a surprise to me when that evening, after being at Sophia's, instead of heading home, I saw her climb into her friend's car, all of her back exposed by the skimpy dress she had on. It was a very startling sight for me as I have only ever seen her, unlike Sophia, in hospital scrubs, wide tees, round glasses, and pants. Never have I seen her in a dress and that too, the type she had on. And the shoes. I was greatly amused when she struggled to walk in them. Curious as to where they were headed, I followed their car and it took me right to THE WREAKIN'. I suspected it, halfway to the place. It was th
"Hallow-hospital?" I manage to croak out after I stared at the man for a full minute. He must be cracking a late evening joke and if that was it, then he was not being funny at all. "I never asked for a transfer.""I know." He said, reclining on his chair. "Look, Debby, you're one hell of a doctor. I think here is far too small for your potential.""Let me be the judge of that sir," I answer, forcefully. "Let me decide whether or not I want to leave here."There was no way in God's name I was leaving this part of town to work in a hospital like that. Hallow-hospital? The name alone brought me memories. Memories I'd rather keep at the back of my psyche. If I brought them to the fore, I'd be broken, all over again.Mr. Grey looks at me, his fingers in a cross in front of his face. He is not saying anything."Mr. Grey, I do not want to leave the community hospital. I like my job here. It's close to my house and I can save a lot. Plus, I am already so used to everyone here. It'll be hard
It's been hours and nothing strange happened yet. When I walked back home, I half expected that Leo would be in my room, awaiting my return from work with great anticipation, so we can pick up right from where we stopped. But I returned home to meet the house cold and empty, just as I left it.Although I felt stupid, I could not help looking around my room and Jake's, in my bid to check if Leo was there. I even checked the bathroom as well because who knows? He might have gotten into the house through the tiny window high up on the wall in there.Disappointment filled my heart after my search. He was nowhere close. As I began to prepare for the night, it dawned on me that I was treading dangerous paths. I was wholeheartedly willing to be in the company of a renowned thief that was wanted by a lot of people. Even private security agencies run by the rich people he had stolen from were after him as well.Yet, I felt at ease with him. I felt that he would not do me harm. Although I can
I gulped heavily. I wasn't expecting her answer to be so sharp. It cut through me like a hot knife through the rubber. "So, he kills and stuff like that, huh?" "Of course, a guy like him would kill. Ever seen a thief that has high moral holdings?" My dad used to say that just like good things are related, bad things are found closely stuck together. On the general moral bar with which bad acts were judged, I suppose stealing and killing were sitting pretty much close to each other. That means that there is a possibility that Leo is also a murderer. I gulp down heavy saliva. He could kill me. I could as well be the most unlucky lass in the whole of Gayville. "Why are you asking though?" Sophia's voice cut through my thoughts. "Are you scared he'd come back for you?" "What? No... No." I stutter." No, I was just curious." "Don't fret, darling. As you said, he only came to your place to retrieve his jacket. The policemen could have gotten hold of it and perhaps, gotten somethi
When my phone started ringing, I had the least intuition that it was going to be another twist of events. Now my brother is taken. Since I came to know about this paper, it has been nothing but heartache.“They have my brother,” I announced to Sebastian and Walter after getting off the phone.“Shit!” he cussed. We drive silently for a while, no one was talking. My mind was on freeing my brother and nothing else. They had asked for the Rubik’s cube and the necklace in exchange for him. I have nothing to lose if I hand them over to them. They said they are calling in the next two hours to tell me where to meet them and I must come alone and tell no one. That’s exactly what I am going to do, not even Sebastian would stop me from this.“Don’t worry. I will get your brother back to you with no harm done to him,” Sebastian had assur
Mr. Edwards noticed the look on Lucas’ face. “What is it?” Mr. Edwards asked curiously.“The Rubik’s cube is gone! Yet my office did not look like it was mobbed when I got in this morning! So how did he gain entrance in?”“He played you by using Ace as a distraction to get in,” Jack said. With the Rubik’s cube in hand of Sebastian, Lucas and his grandfather knew that the Halloways Company is bound to fall, just like Leo took out other companies if nothing is done.“Involving police and asking me to standby last night was the biggest mistake you made, Mr. Edwards,” Jack said. “I have my boy, trailing both Sebastian and Debby since they met at the Wreakin’ club. I am the only one that knows how he operates. I would have gotten him last night if I was allowed but you said you don’t trust me.”M
The next morning at the police station, Ace is sitting in the interrogation room. Shortly, Officer Steve walked into the room with a folder and dropped it on the table in front of Ace.“I thought you were the good guy until you started killing innocent people,” Officer Steve said as he sat opposite Ace.Ace chuckled. “You got the wrong guy!” Ace said.Officer Steve looked at him for a while then said, “The records in front of you said otherwise.”“Your records might be correct. But they are not talking about me, they are talking about Leo, and I am not Leo.”“So who are you?”“I am Ace! A-C-E! in case you can’t spell it.”“The information that reached us last night said that Leo was invading the Halloways Hospital. If you are not Leo, then what are you doi
As I wanted to leave the room, my eyes fell on a Rubik’s cube set on a sizable fridge in the corner. “I have seen something like that,” I thought. I tried to remember where and when but I could not so I decided to forget about it and leave. But as I made to go out, my mind was still on the Rubik’s cube. It was as if there was a rope tied to me from the Rubik’s cube, making my going out without dragging it along impossible. So I decided to carry it along.Just as I stepped out of the room to go, I felt a piece of metal touch my head. As I turned, there was Joan with a gun. She moved backward to leave some space between us.“What are you doing with a gun, Joan?”“Nothing. I just want that Rubik’s cube.”“And why should I give it to you?”“Because I have a gun. If you don’t give
When Sebastian initially approached the building, there was no sign of policemen around, not even the hospital security. Not seeing any security in sight only meant one thing to him; they cleared everywhere just to lure him into the building easily, so they could lock down the building and hem him in. But he was not going to make it that easy for them.“This is going to be tougher than I thought.”That was why he changed his plan and decided to create some panic by going behind the building to the powerhouse to knock out the power source. But just when he turned to go, a bright halogen light flashed at him, and every darkness that hid him before left!“Shit! I just caught made before I even started,” Sebastian muttered.“Oh! It’s you!” Ace said and turned off the torch.“Ace what are you doing?”
Sebastian and Debby kept arguing without making any progress. She was determined to go.“You don’t have to be worried about my safety,” Sebastian said. “Jack and Ace are going with me. I already notified them. So you just rest right here.”“If you are going down, I want to be there to go down with you. I’m ready to take this risk.”Debby felt it was a risk worth taking, besides she has cancer anyway. Dying from a bullet or getting caught is better than dying slowly of cancer.“Even if you stop me from going with you, I will still come after you. I love you too much to let you walk right into the danger zone all alone,” Debby persisted.“You are so stubborn,” Sebastian taunted her.“Oh yeah!” Debby chuckled and put her arm on his neck then continued, “A trait I picked up
Mr. Edwards brandished the gun with a mischievous smile on his face then said, “I sent you to do business for me and you were not afraid to run away with my money? You deserve not to be heard but to be killed!”Jack knew what he did. He knew Mr. Edwards was not blabbing. He knew what he can do.“Now tell me why I should not shoot you right now for betraying my trust for you and running away with my money?” Mr. Edwards threatened.Jack was unmoved. “That’s why I’m here,” he said. “I am tired of running. I want to be free, I want to be able to pay you back all the money I stole from the company.”“And you are sure you will be able to pay that money even in your entire lifetime?”“The information I brought is worth more than your entire company. That is nothing compared to whatever I’m owing.&r
When Debby walked through the hospital that day with her things, everyone was looking at her, wondering why she was packing. She was so ashamed. Her life since she joined that hospital kept going up and down, from one trouble to another and now she is been sacked.“Life has been fucking unfair to me. So fucking unfair!” she cussed under her breath. From the corner of her eyes, she could see Joan smiling at her as she made her way through the door. She is probably happy that she lost once again. It was only Brian that came to help her with her things. He stood with her until she entered a taxi and left. She had wanted to go home to pick up her necklace after work before going over to Sebastian’s place but no more. The pain she was feeling was so much that only a good cry with her head on his broad chest could be the only remedy. If it were before, she would be thinking of going
It was a Monday morning already. It’s almost two days since Sophia my friend lured me to a club and made me get drunk. All through the weekend, I didn’t go home apart. I had several calls from Jakes saying he wanted to see me but after getting drunk, all the promises I made of coming home to see him were history. But there was something else. Before I left Sebastian’s house for work, he told me to stay away from my house as much as possible and also try to get Jakes to do so. I agreed. But I know I lied to him. I might not be going home to sleep, for the time being, moreover, I like being with him at all times. But I cannot let my necklace in the room. I need to get it.My dad gave it to me a few days before he died. He told me I would be needing that necklace one day but never told me why nor do I know what it would be useful for apart from just wearing it as an ornament. That’s
