"These shouldn't be too strong. They belong to Tita."

Ed handed the bottle of pills to Ruby, who was hunching over on the chair because of her headache. Ruby may have lost a significant amount of fluid from her head during her earlier crying session, as her head is now aching again. She had started the day with a hangover and was ending it in much the same way.

Ruby took one and swallowed it with the grape juice she hadn't had a chance to drink earlier. She then leaned back on the bench, closing her eyes because they hurt too much to look at anything.

"I think you should sleep," Ed said as he put the medicine back and sat down next to Ruby.

"I don't want to." Ruby immediately opened her eyes, trying to seem fine.

"Why?" Ed was puzzled. It was clear that Ruby needed it.

"I still want to be here," Ruby said, shaking her head.

"In that case, I'll go," Ed said, standing up.

"Don't!" Ruby grabbed Ed's hand, eliciting a laugh from him.

He sat back down. Ed didn't really want to leave. He wa

"I can't meet you without her." Ruby reminded him that their fates might never have crossed if not for Esli's trickery.Ruby would have spent her entire life in Veracruz. The chances of meeting Ed were slim."We met because it was meant to be. Even if it were not for Esli, I believe we would have met anyway. Perhaps under more favorable conditions, we wouldn't have gotten off to a terrible start." Ed refused to acknowledge that Esli was the reason for their meeting. He preferred to imagine another fate—maybe he and Ruby were meeting on the street accidentally. Something simple without exhausting drama."Yes. I prefer that too." Ruby murmured as her eyes grew heavy. The medication started to work."Ruby?" Ed called softly, then sighed when he saw she had fallen asleep."Sound asleep," Ed muttered, suddenly recalling the moment when Ruby fell asleep on the porch after inadvertently exposing her body. This memory bears some resemblance to her present condition.Ed felt a bit envious to s

She longed for the warmth. The touch that felt distant and impossible yesterday is now caressing. Ruby wants it all.“Cariño…” Ed's sigh wasn't a complaint, but a surprise. Ruby was even more than he had imagined. For years, Ed dreamed of this. Embracing the soft body made him forget the world. He wanted it more than anything, and Ruby gave him more than he desired.Although Ruby had changed significantly, she remained the same. Ed remembered everything. Every breath, moan, and groan were still the same.“I missed you…” Ed whispered, gripping Ruby’s nape and kissing her again and again. Ed seemed insatiable—never wanting to be satisfied, always wanting more.“Yes… take it… Anything." Ruby could feel his burning desire leaving a trail of heat as Ed roamed and caressed her entire body. His lips continued to worship and praise with a deep, melodious whisper.Ruby gripped Ed's arm tightly, causing him to writhe in response as he leaned forward.“Don’t…” Ed kissed Ruby's lips, watching her

Ruby gasped, immediately pulling the blanket over both Ed's body and her own, leaving only their heads visible. She turned her body to shield Ed, who was luckily lying close to the wall. Ed instantly went still, his body stiff beneath the covers.AJ slowly walked in, clearly puzzled by the sight of Ruby completely covered. "Mommy, are you still sick?" he asked.AJ approached, and Ruby shook her head vigorously. "Don't come!" she exclaimed."Why not?" AJ looked disappointed."Sorry, but don't come any closer." Ruby forced herself to smile."Oh, is it contagious? Like chickenpox?" For the same reason, Ruby had previously forbidden AJ from approaching one of his friends."Mommy isn't sure, but it's better if you don't get sick, right? You're still recovering." Ruby prayed earnestly that AJ would leave soon."Hmm... are you cold?" AJ asked, still puzzled, why Ruby hadn't shown her hands or neck."Y-yes." Ruby stammered, feeling the nervous sweat on her back."Why are you here? Shouldn't y

"Nice. This is good." Ed observed the surroundings."Just say it. This is too simple for your usual environment," Ruby scoffed, not believing Ed's assessment. Her home in New York wasn’t bad, but it was far from what Ed had. Ruby focused on her business, not her house."I’m not criticizing anything. This house is comfortable, and AJ... seems to be enjoying it," Ed said, turning to look at AJ, who was jumping in the middle of the staircase to the second floor."Can you hear this?! It sounds like a mouse!" AJ shouted, demonstrating to Ed something he found amusing. The middle of the old staircase creaked whenever someone stepped on it, and AJ was doing it on purpose. The house wasn’t in perfect condition, as Ruby hadn’t gathered enough money for repairs. As long as it was usable, Ruby ignored any noises. However, witnessing AJ consistently leap at the same location was worrisome."AJ, you’re going to make it collapse," Ruby warned, but AJ just laughed and continued."AJ," Ed called out

"I don't want you to get your hopes up too much. When her memory isn't perfect, my mom can be a bit difficult to talk to," Ruby warned Ed as they parked the car.Ed nodded. "I understand."Ed had no experience meeting someone with Alzheimer's disease, but he knew enough about the condition."Come on, hurry!" AJ was enthusiastic, as usual, and pulled his mom and Ed by the hand."Slow down, AJ. You'll spill the coffee." Ruby, of course, had brought some food for Grace."I'll take it." Ed finally took the coffee, holding it more steadily."You're really excited to meet her," Ed said, ruffling AJ's hair and trying to calm his excitement."Yeah, Abuela is nice. Even if she doesn't remember who I am, she's nice." AJ never voiced any complaints about the situation because Jade, despite her memory loss, had never been mean to her."My mom never felt the need to be harsh with children. Grace says it's instinct," Ruby explained again to

“MAMA!” Ruby pulled her mother's wheelchair back instantly, while Ed wiped his face, his eyes squinting—stinging from the juice that had hit them directly.“Daddy, here.” AJ approached with tissues for him, then led Ed away. AJ seemed accustomed to Jade's sudden changes in behavior. He stepped back while his mother calmed down.“Mama, what’s wrong?” Ruby stroked her mother’s shoulder, which was moving and heaving with anger. She continued to glare at Ed with hatred in her eyes.“Tell him I’m not coming back! I won’t give up, Ruby!” Jade grabbed Ruby’s hand on her shoulder and pulled her closer.“Where is Gemma? Have you seen her? Bring her here! We’re leaving!” Jade began wheeling herself toward the door.“Mama, who is Gemma?” Ruby had never heard that name before.“Gemma! Your sister! Hurry! Ed released his embrace and stroked Ruby's head. He had come to Ruby's room with that purpose. He knew Ruby would be anxious.“Gemma... there's no doubt she's your sister. Just look at her name,” said Ed.“Hm?”“Gemma—it means a precious gem. It bears similarities to both your name and your mother's name, Jade. That name was chosen specifically. But it’s too early to conclude whether this Gemma is Liz. We need to ask your mother for more clarity.” Ed wanted Ruby to avoid making hasty assumptions.“I... Before this, I hadn't heard a single word about Gemma. Not even once. Why all of a sudden…” Ruby shook her head, unable to comprehend.“Because of Guadalajara. Have you ever discussed that city with your mother?” Ed asked.Ruby shook her head. “Not any city. Mom never allowed me to leave Veracruz. All my life, she urged me not to leave that city. I never went far. I only realized on our wedding day that I could get car sick—because that was the first time I traveled far.”Because her mo

'I don't know' had come up five times, but Liz didn't feel guilty.“Dad, I really don’t know! What am I supposed to tell you? Ed hasn’t come home for a long time. It’s been months!” Liz, who was lying by the pool, took off her sunglasses and stood up to face her father, annoyed at being disturbed. She wanted to enjoy her relaxing time.“He’s your husband! At the very least, you should know where he is, Liz. I was not angry with you when you didn’t sleep with Ed, but at least you should know where he is when I need him.” Esli shouted."You didn't say anything before, and now you suddenly come and demand that I do something! They eventually grew close, even though their conversations were sometimes limited because Claud was more fluent in Italian than English. Still, they got along well enough.“How did it all start?” Ed frowned.“I don’t know.” Ruby was also unsure.“Maybe I shouldn’t have agreed when AJ asked.” Liz deeply regretted it.Somehow, AJ had convinced Liz to provide a chocolate fountain for her wedding, and it had become the source of chaos. The younger children were enjoying it, but soon chocolate stains appeared on the white tablecloths, as wel

"Do I have to? I already checked that document yesterday. Can’t you do it instead?" When Ed saw another email from Otiz, he complained. It was a financial report. Since Matteo had spread his investments in every direction—across more or less thirty companies—the financial reports Otiz received came from all directions, across different types of businesses. Ed hadn't anticipated this.Being an investor wasn’t as straightforward as it seemed. He still had to work.“You’re the one who has to check it. I’m just the middleman,” Otiz firmly refused. He could refuse because the request was made over the phone. Perhaps if they were face-to-face, Otiz would be more compliant. He was no longer blindly following Ed's orders, carefully sorting out what should and should not be done. He was only responsible for delivering financial reports, not reviewing them.Ed grumbled. He was quite used to reviewing company pa

Elena and Elisa sat quietly, either really listening or getting sleepy. It was already time for their afternoon nap."Read this," Ed shifted, making room for Ruby to sit beside him, and handed her a phone displaying an article in Spanish. Less than two hours had passed since the publication of this hot news story.Ruby didn’t pay attention to that, though, because she was immediately stunned by the headline.‘DEA ARRESTS MAJOR MEXICAN CARTEL AND EXPOSES BILLION-DOLLAR BUSINESS NETWORK’"What... you...?" Ruby turned pale and panicked, of course."Read it to the end," Ed said, pointing to the rest of the text that she had not yet seen.Ruby read quickly and frowned. Two black vans speed down a deserted road. It was already nighttime, and they were the only ones there. The end of the road was in sight—a black iron gate.“Ram it!”A shout rang out, and the vans didn’t slow down. The passengers inside, all dressed in black, held on tight as a deafening crash echoed. The gate fell, bent, but opened. The two vans barged through and stopped right in front of the brightly lit house.“Get in and kill everyone!”Another shout, and the people inside the vans scrambled out, storming into the beachside house. Some were carrying firearms; others were wielding clubs. However, as they entered, everyone froze. No one came to greet them. The house was supposed to be full of guards, which was why they had come in numbers—ready for a confrontation. In reality, what greeted them was silence. Not a single person appeared, even though the house was brightly lit.“

"AJ, don't make Abuela tired!" Elisa and Elena had just learned to walk, and they happily followed him around.AJ couldn't stop when he had such an audience. Mia seemed to be scolding him, but everyone knew Mia could never really be upset at AJ.Ruby had to step in, followed by Ed to watch over Elisa and Elena. Although falling on the sand wouldn't hurt, the beach had sharp rocks that could scrape them."Mommy! They should chase me! Don't pick them up!" AJ didn’t want his little sisters to be carried away and stop the fun."Alright," Ruby said, intending to supervise them closely."How about we take a vacation?" Ed abruptly proposed the idea, having just finished reading a message on his phone."Hm?" Ruby was surprised. There had been no suc

"Here."Ed gave Otiz a handkerchief to wipe away his tears. If it had been just a few, he would have let Otiz cry—and wiped the tears with the sleeve of his jacket. The problem was that Otiz couldn’t stop crying. He had already been emotional when Ed stood beside him at the altar, and it got worse when he saw Lori walking down the aisle, escorted by flowers. It was all too beautiful and dazzling for his eyes.“Sorry,” Otiz stammered, wiping the remaining tears from his face.“What are you apologizing for? At a wedding, shedding tears is not considered inappropriate. You're just too happy. No one will blame you.” Ed gently patted Otiz’s shoulder and then turned his gaze forward.Of course, Lori was the focus of the event. Her choice of dress was perfect, blending seamlessly with the entire garden decor. Flowers, ribbons, music, and all the other elements were carefully and precisely chosen—now showcasi

Ed tapped his finger on the glass in his hand. His eyes were fixed on a single point—Marco Reyes. The man was speaking with Otiz. Nothing important. Marco was just making small talk, and Otiz was doing the same—being polite, answering Marco's questions about his law firm's progress. Ed actually needed to speak to both of them, but he chose to start with Marco first.Ed just needed to gesture with his chin, and Otiz understood immediately. He excused himself, making up a reason, and left Marco alone."I need to talk to you," Ed said as he approached."Oh? What is it?" Marco immediately followed Ed, moving to the quiet side yard. The other guests filled the living room."I want you to handle the shipment to Ecuador and Brazil next week."Marco looked as if he had choked. This was incredibly surprising. Ed had never let him touch the South American market before. Ed had always handled it himself. Marco had only been managing North A

"Mommy, I want to try! You be Elena, and I'll be Elisa."AJ reached out his hand, asking for the milk bottle from Ruby. He wanted to try feeding the babies—and he chose Elisa.Usually, Tita was around to help Ruby, but today Tita was busy, so Ruby had been on her own since earlier."You can, but please be careful, okay? Don’t let her choke, and don’t squeeze." Ruby guided AJ's hand to hold the bottle filled with pre-warmed breast milk, helping him apply just the right pressure so it wouldn't press too hard against Elisa's lips."Wow! Look, Mommy! She's drinking!" AJ exclaimed happily, eyes sparkling with joy. This was the first time he was directly involved—doing something for his little sister. AJ usually watched, but at first he was afraid to hold the babies. He would look in awe but wouldn’t dare touch them.“See? It’s not a big deal, right? You don’t have to be scared anymore.”&l

From their disheveled appearance, it was clear that Liz and Asher had either just rushed out of a room or possibly run over here. One thing was certain: as soon as they heard the news about Ruby, they had hurried over."Where? Ruby... You're pale. Why... It shouldn't be happening now."Just like Lori, Liz was out of breath as she approached Ruby, panicking. The news had shocked everyone. Liz had already planned to stay in Puerto Vallarta next week to be there for Ruby when she gave birth.Of course, Liz no longer lived at Ed’s house. She had managed to buy her own apartment.“I’m fine, and they’re fine too. But the nurse hasn’t brought them here yet.
