Talia's POV

The festival is nothing short of magical. Lanterns glow softly, casting golden light over the town square. Long wooden tables are set up, covered in platters of food so delicious that my stomach growls just looking at them. Music drifts through the air, played by a group of werewolves with makeshift instruments, their laughter and voices filling the night.

People dance, their movements are uncoordinated but full of joy. No one seems to care about looking perfect. There's freedom in that, a kind of wild happiness.

Then comes the communal meal.

I sit at a table surrounded by my new friends. Luna, Jasper, Finn, and even Greta-who I have since learned are not as terrifying as she looks (though still slightly terrifying). The food is delicious, but my appetite dwindles one by one, and people start sharing their stories.

"I was born the runt of my litter," an older werewolf named Rowan says, his deep voice carrying across the table. "Too weak to shift. My pack saw me as useless, a burden. They left me behind during a raid, and I was almost killed by a rogue wolf. On my way escaping I met Alpha Axon right here," he points at him. "He lifted me in my dying state and offered me water. He brought me here, and ever since, I have never been judged by anyone."

A woman named Livia speaks. "I was cast out because of my scars." She runs a hand over the deep ridges along her arm. "They said I was too 'damaged' to find a mate, that no one would want a broken wolf. I was humiliated and thrown out of the Pack when I eventually found my destined mate, he rejected me without a second thought and threw me out in the middle of the night because he was the Pack's Alpha. I roamed in the woods for days before I came in contact with Alpha Axton here, and the rest is history." She chuckles.

Another man, Callum, laughs. "I never had a wolf. Born completely human in a werewolf pack. You can imagine how well that went. I watched the wolf's shift, attending shifting ceremonies while patiently waiting for my wolf to emerge. But guess what? It never did. I got frustrated and left the Pack in the middle of the night one day, I couldn't take the insults and pitiful glares of my Pack members anymore. Like others, I also roam the woods before meeting Alpha Axton here."

Their words hit me harder than I expected. They were all rejected and abandoned just like me.

"Your turn, Miss Purple." Jasper nudges me.

I swallow, my throat suddenly dry. "I-"

"You don't have to, Talia," Luna informs, patting my back.

"No, it's okay." I exhale.

I glance around the table, seeing nothing but warmth in their eyes. They're not waiting to judge me. They're waiting to understand me. They want to know my story just like everyone has related. Alpha Axton, Goddess blesses him for bringing these people together.

"My pack rejected me because I was wolfless and overweight," I say, forcing the words out before I lose my nerve. "I was always the outcast. The one who didn't belong. I tried to fit in, but no matter what I did, it was never enough. I was never enough. As if that wasn't enough humiliation, the moon goddess decided to humiliate me more by giving me Alpha Bran, my pack alpha, as a mate. I saw rejection in his eyes and I never waited for him to reject me. Instead, I helped in the rejection and exited the place, of course, after I had given them all a middle finger."

There's a beat of silence. Then they all burst into laughter. Not as if they were mocking me, but they were laughing genuinely. I guess my story is that funny though.

Rowan wipes a tear from his eye. "Damn, Talia. That's it?"

"What?" I blink.

"You're telling me you didn't wait for a formal rejection? That's the funniest rejection story I've ever heard!" Livia grins.

"At least they didn't try to kill you." Callum chuckles.

I gape at them. "You're all laughing at me?"

"No, we're laughing with you. Talia, you're one of us now. And around here, we turn pain into humhumourt's how we survive." Jasper smirks.

Finn, who has been stuffing his face with pancakes, finally swallows. "You're like... the least tragic person here."

I stare at them, and then I start laughing too.

Because for the first time, I realize that maybe I don't have to carry this pain alone anymore.

As the night draws to a close, I step away from the crowd, needing a moment to breathe. I walk toward the edge of the town square, where the lights don't quite reach, and the stars are clearer.

Footsteps approach behind me. "Talia."

I turn to find Alpha Axton. "Enjoying the festival?" he asks.

"More than I expected to." I nod, "I must say, I'm grateful to you for inviting me and making sure I attend. The thing is, I'm not a fan of parties; I always get things wrong, like stepping dignitaries on their toes to send them jogging in pain, stumbling on servers, causing wines to spill, stopping the music and getting the whole Pack's disapproving looks, to mention but a few.

But here I am today, at a party, and nothing of those weird things has happened. I wasn't judged for how I looked, dressed or how I ate. I must say that I'm happy to be here.

"And there's more if you choose to stay here with us. Trust me you'll like it here." He assures.

"Can't wait," I nod, smirking.

"There's something I need to tell you."

Something in his tone makes my stomach twist.

I straighten. "What is it?"

I sigh, poking at the pancakes with my fork. "Why do I even care?" I mumble. "It's not like their opinions matter." But the truth is that no matter how much I try to convince myself otherwise, their words always stick to me like glue, making it hard to stop the feeling that I will always be an outsider in my pack, no matter how hard I try to fit in.My last bite of the pancake, I can say, is bitter and, at the same time, sweet. The reason is that it reminds me that breakfast can't last forever. I push the plate away, lean back in my chair, and take a long breath. I returned to my room, looking at myself again through the mirror. This is what I always do, but the mirror never seems to work in my favour. My reflection always stares back at me, showing me a combination of resistance and acceptance. My figure and my curves are fuller than the sleek, toned-bodied of the others. My hair is stubborn and refuses to be tamed, no matter how much I brush or smooth it down. And to make matters w

Of course, it's about how I look. That has always been everyone's headache."The dignitaries from the neighbouring Packs will be there," he continues, firmly and unkind. "We can't afford any embarrassment, Talia. You need to cushion yourself, understand? Dress properly and eat with restraint. Don't draw any unwanted attention to yourself."If he has a baton, I would prefer he hit me to those words. I knew the pack didn't think much of me, but hearing it plainly from the Alpha himself stings more than I expected. I grip the edge of my plate, and my knuckles turn white."I... Talia's POVThe morning air is crisp, carrying the scent of the earth and flowers as I step out of my small home. The traces of dawn can still be seen in the sky, painted in shades of pink and gold. I stretch my arms, feeling a slight ache from yesterday's activities, Jasper, Luna, and Finn getting covered in purple smoke and then surviving Greta's terrifying glare. For the first time in a long time, I don't feel like an outsider. I feel like I truly belong here, but I still have to be careful in making my decisions. I don't want to end up in a Pack just like Starlight.A knock at the door startles me from my thoughts."Coming!" I call, moving towards it.When I open the door, Luna stands with her calm smile in place. Behind her, Jasper rests on the frame, arms crossed over his chest. Finn is perched on Jasper's shoulders, grinning."Talia, we've come to kidnap you," Luna announces causing me to blink repeatedly. "Excuse me?""She means we have something important to tell you." Talia's POV For several minutes I have tried dusting off this weird purple smoke Jasper caused, but they won't go. "Can't you do something, Jasper? Are you just going to stand there watching me go around looking like this?" I rant, but to be fair-Jasper has tried, but the smoke won't budge."Talia, you know you look good in purple." Luna teases, casting me a smiley, almost laughing look."Uhm..uhm, let me try again." Jasper rummages his bag one more time. "I got it yeah," he exclaims, bringing out a fish-like small little container."Have this, Talia; it's a scientific soap; it will wipe the smoke off your body and return your normal colour." "Uhmm, Jasper, are you sure Talia is not going to turn pink completely after bathing with this soap of yours?" Luna questions scratching the back of her head. Jasper was about to talk when faint footsteps rummaged through the clearing towards our direction. Also, the voice of someone, probably a young Pup, talking from a distance. "Hold on Jas

Talia's POV I stand swiftly as the footsteps are approaching, the sound louder now as if the person is coming closer. I glance around and find a stray log, big and thick enough to break someone's head in case they're enemies. I don't recollect speaking to anyone except Alpha Axton, his guards, driver and some of his maids. Maybe it's one of them though. I'm tempted to let my guard down, but I brace again, holding the log with my two hands on high alert in case it's not any of them. "Aaarrrrr!!!" We both are screaming, I close my eyes, lifting the log so high that it falls back behind me due to its heaviness. I open my eyes slowly to meet the gaze of a pretty lady; she should be in her mid-twenties like me. Her cute eyes widen in fear and her trembling hand is holding a beautiful flower."Hi..." I greet awkwardly, dusting them my hands on my trousers and stretching my hand to shake her, but she looks at me awkwardly before silently going to sit on the log I was sitting on earlier be

Did he think I'm going to allow him to show up here and destroy everything I've worked hard for? I have to make him leave before Bran comes out. That might arouse suspicions in him, and I wouldn't want that. "Leave now!" I shout again, but it seems this is not going to work. I watch in silence, not because I'm weak or because I don't know what to say, but because I can't seem to figure out where all these are coming from."We've always respected you and your decisions since you were chosen to be our Alpha, but your silence in this issue is painting another picture." His gaze returns to the other council members like he is asking for their permission to proceed, and they nod, giving him the go-ahead to speak. "We can't help but think that there's something you have done wrong to bring us this calamity. Selene is angry at us for something done wrong. If not, why would our sacrifices not have been accepted by the moon goddess after a series of attempts, and she keeps on striking us with death and rogue attacks?" I look into spac
