Waking up for the first time, it feels like my whole body is weighted down and is made of lead. I open my eyes and wait for them to adjust to the light. Looking straight up I can see the yellow-brown-red of the wooden struts holding up a wooden roof. From what I can tell the walls are made of the same wood. It looks like I must be in a wooden cabin of some sorts. I try to lift my head, but only manage lifting it the tiniest way before the effort of using my stomach muscles send shooting pains up and down my body. Not to mention giving me a woozy head. “Isshhhh” I wince and lay my head back down. “Your awake!”, I hear a soft woman’s voice say. I move only my eyes in the direction of the the voice. A tall, slender, older woman with long waves of grey and silver hair and a broad smile and kind face stands up and walks to me. “Shh, hush now, don’t try to move too much. You are safe and we are taking care of you. You may feel a little confused, but that is completely normal. I am a
“Barry, my love!” Callie squeals and runs up to a handsome man. She throws her arms around his neck in an excitable embrace. He looks like he could do with a hair cut and his beard is one of those scraggly, messy types that get left to grow without being shaped or trimmed for tidiness. He may not look like a million bucks, but the car he is driving sure means he’s got money, just like Callie said. He gives Callie a big old hug and grabs her arse with a squeeze, “hello baby, I’ve missed you sooo much!” He turns to me after their embrace and smiles with a lovely genuine smile that immediately makes me feel relaxed, and I can now see what Callie sees in him. Hmm, she normally has terrible taste in men, but going against my better judgement, I kind of think they might just work as a couple. They are kind of cute together. I know I’m dreaming, but, Oh, what a wonderful dream this is...... I can feel the happiness radiating from Callie, she is positively beaming a
Deliberating it in my mind, I do think it is time for proper introductions, I can’t keep calling the doctor lady, Doctor lady! And I can’t keep calling the hunky bearded man, Bearded man! And I most certainly couldn’t call him, Hunky Bearded Man to his face. I place my cup on the table next to me, it causes me to flinch and I interrupt what the doctor lady is telling the bearded man about why it’s a good idea for me to get out of bed and move around. They both hear me flinch and turn to look at me with big, expectant eyes. That’s when the older gentleman comes into the room. I stare back at them with big petulant eyes, as if to say I’m okay it was just a flinch. The older gentleman then says, “what is your name dear girl?” It crosses my mind for a split second that maybe they aren’t the good people they are trying to come across as. Maybe they've kidnapped me and done this to me. After all, no matter how hard I try to remember, I just can’t seem to recall what
As I lay and think, trying my best to remember what happened to me since climbing off the bus I hear hushed voices coming from the other room. It’s hard to hear at first, but as I focus my attention on the voices I can hear bits and pieces, depending on who’s talking. The Sheriffs voice is difficult to hear because he has a hushed tone and he also has a thick Alaskan twang. However, Doctor Willows voice is clear and concise and I can hear some of what she is saying when she speaks even though she is speaking in a whispered tone. Robins voice, well I can hear every word he speaks. He has one of those deep voices that reverberates through the wooden walls, even though he is speaking softly. He has a nice comforting tone to his deep voice. It reminds me of when we were young children, before our parents died. My father would always be up before sunrise and he would make his morning coffee and hum quietly to himself, and although he did it quietly, his deep voice would travel thr
On the request of Doc Willow, Robin and Sheriff Penser sit in the living room being as still as they can be, trying to overhear what is being said in the bedroom between Doc Willow and Cammie. After some time Doc Willow comes out of the bedroom, “she’s sleeping now, I’ve given her a light sedative”. Willow runs her hand from her brow to the sides of her forehead and rubs her temples gently. She has a pained expression and says quietly, “I need a paracetamol, I have a pounding headache”. She walks over to the green medical bag that I had to retrieve from the snow on the first day they’d arrived. She digs around and pulls a box of pills out, pops them from their container and swallows two. Then walks over to the kitchen and pours a tall glass of water before downing half of that. She leans against the kitchen counter, closes her eyes and puts her head back as if trying to will-away the ache that is pulsating through her head. With a long sigh she lifts her head and opens her eyes. I
As promised, Robin is up at first light. After a quick look in on Cammie who is still sleeping after a restless night of her tossing and turning so much that it kept him awake most of the night. She seems to be sleeping better now so he decides to slink off without making a sound. He forgoes the coffee as that would wake the sheriff and doc up. Robin grabs his coat and heads straight out. It’s cold out and he shivers a little as he zips his coat up and pulls his hood up and over his head. Breathing out white clouds of puff into the cold, crisp morning air, he reaches into his coat pocket and pulls out his gloves. It’s still a little dark but the sun is peaking through the tree line and the sky is clear, not a cloud in sight. It looks like it’s going to be a bright sunny day today. Hopefully some of the snow will melt and things will start to get back to normal around here. After some shovelling of snow to make a path to the shed, he struggles to pull the door open. Once in it’s still
Robin is happy that the radio is working now and that Cammie can get some proper medical attention, but he can’t but help feel upset about her having to leave the cabin. The main reason he rushed to get the radio fixed is so that he could try find some information about Cammie’s sister, but now the realisation that Cammie will be air lifted out of here in a few hours is putting him on edge. The notion that her leaving is causing him this much stress is ludicrous, after all, he’s only known her a few days.... but he just can’t let her go. What is wrong with him? He can feel the tension rising in himself and can’t deal with it, he decides the best thing to do is to create some space between her and him and to keep himself busy. He stands up with an almighty thud, everyone turns to look at him with a jolt. He stares back with a frown that he wouldn’t be able to hide even if he tried and says with a short and matter of fact tone, “I guess that’s that, the chopper’s arranged, I guess i
Stomping around outside in the snow, trying to keep busy and trying to avoid thinking of Cammie leaving the homestead, Robin is shovelling snow like crazy. ‘Cammie is going to be gone within the hour, I may not see her again’, Robin thinks to himself. This whole trying to keep busy to avoid thinking of her isn’t exactly working. Which frustrates him even more. He is so annoyed that if the snow was pure 10inch thick ice he would punch it with his bare fists. Instead he shovels the snow with more intensity then before. So much so that there is snow flying all over the place with every shovel and it looks like he’s creating his own man made storm. Shovelling snow like his life depended on it, he keeps mulling it over and talking to himself as usual, “if Cammie leaves for town today, when will the roads be clear enough for me to drive down into town to check on her? I don’t like the idea of her being in town, her attackers could be anywhere, could be anyone... and with three of the
After Callie and Eliza were done with their interviews, the sheriff calls for Cammie and Robin to give their versions of account. Cammie first, tells the sheriff all that had happened that day. Starting with the hike and ending with the part where she and Callie barricaded themselves in the bathroom. Robin takes over from there. He tells of how the men came up to the cabin in their truck, claiming to be looking for their niece. Robin tells the sheriff how he instinctively knew they were going to come back to the cabin armed. Getting ready to fight for his and Cammie’s lives he prepared by showing Cammie how to use the hand gun and told her to stay put in the bedroom until it was all over. On exiting the cabin, Robin tells the sheriff, how he unexpectedly ran into Callie and Eliza. How he had been thrown into a weird panic or shock at first because in the dark, Callie looked just like Cammie, “my brain was confused at first because I wondered how the hell had Cammie got past me and
Eliza and Callie head into the sheriffs office first to give their version of events. Eliza starts eagerly explaining how they had seen the three scumbags hiding in the forest outside of Robins farm when they were on their way down from Eliza’s cabin to Robin’s cabin in search of Cammie. “So how come they didn’t see you two girls coming, how did they not intersect you?” Sheriff asks bewildered. Eliza explains, “well, we caught sight of them when they were parking their truck, one of those three pine tree, black trucks. They were parking it up just a little ways down from Robin’s main gate. We saw them gather their guns out of the back of the truck. It was close but we managed to duck into the forest”.“We walked a ways through the forest and came to Robin’s cabin from the west. Climbed over the stile near the side of the cabin”. Eliza looks at Callie and gives her hand a little reassuring squeeze. “What happened next”, Sheriff urges Eliza to continue. “Once we were on Robin’s land
Eliza is standing, leaning on the kitchen counter sipping coffee, waiting for the girls to come and fetch theirs. On seeing Callie and Cammie exit the bedroom like two naughty, over excited school girls giggling and hanging all over each other, she sniggers at them and says, “now, now girls, he’s just a man!” Rolling her eyes with a look of feigned, utter distain. Both woman burst with laughter before Callie heads over to Eliza. Eliza looking at her questioningly, “should I be worried?”.Callie sways into Eliza and nudges Eliza’s nose with her own, then drops a little kiss on her lips, “never in a million years!”.“I see the nose rubbing thing runs in the family”, Robin’s deep voice interrupting their chatter and making each of them jump just a little before turning to look in his direction.Robin is standing in the doorway of the bedroom, dressed now, in his classic style blue denim jeans, dark blue and black flannel shirt paired with his brown, silver buckle belt and brown boots. W
Laying in each others arms, Robin is determined to stay here in this embrace for as long as he can. Cammie laying naked and beautiful with her head snuggled into the crook of his arm while he holds her to him with the other. Running his hand and gently stroking up and down the side of her soft, supple upper arm, from her shoulder to her elbow. Up and Down..enjoying how smooth and silky her skin feels under his touch.Burying his own face into Cammie’s hair so he can inhale all of her sweet, tantalising woman scent. This is definitely Robin’s happy place. Quite content on staying here not only for the rest of the day, but for the rest of the week, heck! For the rest of his life! Inhaling another wonderful deep breath of sweet, soft conditioned hair, Robin feels Cammie twitch in his embrace. Sensing Cammie wants some room to move, Robin lightens his hold, but doesn’t release her fully. Cammie takes the opportunity to turn around, bracing herself up on one elbow, her face by his face.
Opening my eyes the first thing I see is Cammie staring deep into my eyes. She’s so beautiful, I think to myself. Her soft cream skin and striking blue-green eyes, hair cascading over the pillow, framing her heart shaped face and flowing gently down the front of her neck. “Mornin” I sleepily smile at her. Leaning in to me with a shy smile Cammie gently drops a kiss on my lips then pulls back and says coyly, “would you like some more of that?” My heart skips a beat, then starts to race by the way she’s just unexpectedly and so seductively said that, I get a rush of blood straight to my manhood making it so hard it hurts. I nod my head yes. “Then come and get it”, she says behind blushing red cheeks. Oh my god I can’t believe it’s finally going to happen. Just as I’d always imagined, at her request. Ready to do anything my dove wills of me I’m putty in her hands.. leaning forward about to give her the most amazing kiss she has ever experienced… Robin’s eyes open as the pain in
Still unsure of what is happening I wait patiently in the living room with Callie. Robin is outside with whoever had come to save the day in the chopper. With the power of a hurricane the front door slams open, making Cammie and Callie jump with nervous tension. In rushes a woman with blue dreadlocks and a black leather coat. She runs straight to Callie and wraps her arms around her, “Jesus! What a night? You girls do not want to go out there, there’s a lot of blood” she says with a big eyed warning. My thoughts immediately turn to Robin, and she sees the panic in my face. “Your mountain man is just fine”, she’s quick to reassure me. She turns to Callie and whispers in her ear, almost so quietly that I only just make out what she says, “I’m glad your okay, I was worried about you”. And she nuzzles her nose up against Callie’s cheek. Not entirely sure who this person is or why she’s nuzzled so cosily in Cal’s neck at first, but the realisation slowly hits me when I notice she
My legs are starting to ache, I can’t stay in this squat position behind this chair for much longer, where the hell is Robin? Falling forward, I grab the chair to stabilise myself and it scrapes along the wooden floor, “Shit!” Worried they’re going to hear me in here. I gently slide the chair back into position and re-adjust myself so I’m distributing my weight more evenly. I lift the handgun and rest the end of the barrel on the top of the back of the chair, pointing it dead centre of the doorway. If anyone comes into the room now I’ve got a clear shot. It’s quiet, all I can hear is my own heart beating and my loud breathing, which is heavy and deep. Breathe Cam, just Breath…. I try some calming deep inhalation through my nose and out through my mouth in an attempt to slow down and steady my breathing and my racing heart. Everything’s dark, I can see the slit of light coming through underneath the door from the study lamp in the other room. All of a sudden, I see a shadow
I wonder if I should pack some things in a bag, Cammie asks herself. We might need to do a runner into the forest if someone comes. Looking at Robin who is checking out of each window every few minutes. He’s definitely on edge and is expecting something to happen tonight, I’d better pack a bag. I walk into the bedroom and head straight over to my pile of folded clothes. I figure the jeans I’ve got on are fine to wear more then a day but I grab fresh underwear and socks and spare T-shirt. I also grab the fleece and put it into Robins hiking rucksack. It’s not big so I have to be careful what I put into it. Scanning the room, I walk over to Robins drawers and grab a fresh T-shirt and a yellow and grey plaid button up shirt that feels nice and thick which should help keep him warm if we have to stay out in the cold all night. I grab some thick socks for him too and stuff them in the bag. Okay, so we’ll definitely be needing food and water. In the kitchen I find our water bottles,
Cammie goes back to the bedroom to change. This time she puts a pair of the jeans on with one of her new t-shirts and puts her boots back on as she thinks to herself, I can’t loose it like I did earlier on the mountain. I need to keep my head straight. Determined not to let her fear control her, she tries to convince herself that she is the same tough and fearless woman she was before the attack. She is still the same woman who survived an arrow through the stomach and hyperthermia. If she could face these fuckers once, she could do it again. Heading back out into the living area, Robin in the kitchen with the eggs being reheated in the pan. Cammie sees a shotgun leaning up against the wall next to the hunting rifle and a hand gun is laying on the kitchen counter close to where Robin is reheating the eggs. Determined she is going to defend herself at all costs she asks Robin, “are you going to show me how to use one of those?” Robin looks up at Cammie, “have you ever shot a gun b
