When everyone had finally finished eating, I started helping Dev carry plates to the kitchen, while Caspian escorted a still-protesting Leo toward the main door. The youngest Salvatore had been reluctant to go to school after learning I would be visiting the town with Neel.

“Please, Caspian, just let me stay home today,” Leo pleaded after wriggling free from Caspian’s grasp. He folded his hands and dramatically dropped to the ground. “I promise I won’t cause any trouble. I just want to hang out with Kat and Neel too, please, big brother. I’ll do all my schoolwork later; my studies won’t be affected.”

“Stop being silly, Leo,” Caspian said, picking Leo up like a doll and tossing him over his shoulder. “You’re going to school. I’ll take you to Seattle over the weekend.”

“I don’t want to! Please, let me stay home today!” Leo tried to break free again, but Caspian had learned from his earlier mistake and was holding him tighter this time.

“And I’ll take you to Disneyland when I’m free. Tha

After the kiss, the air between Dev and me felt heavier, laden with something unsaid, something we were both hesitant to acknowledge. He pulled back slowly, as if unsure of what to say. His eyes, still soft and warm, darted around the kitchen before settling on mine again.“Katherine…” His voice was barely above a whisper, his fingers trailing the side of my face gently as if weighing what he was about to say.I swallowed hard, not sure where to look or how to respond. I crossed the line again. This time with another brother. Guilt surged through me like a wave, followed by something far more unsettling—a longing I couldn’t quite place. However, with Dev, it felt different. It wasn’t like when I was with Lucas. When Dev and I kissed, something sparked between us that neither of us could fully understand, but we both felt it. Something more than just physical desire, something that scared me.“I’m sorry if that—” I began, but Dev shook his head quickly, cutting me off.“You don’t have

I came downstairs when Dev texted me that Neel was back and waiting for me.My heart still felt heavy, a mix of guilt and confusion swirling within me, but I pushed those thoughts aside. I couldn’t dwell on what had happened with Dev, not right now. When I entered the entrance hall, Neel was seated comfortably on a loveseat, flipping through one of his well-worn books. His fingers moved over the yellowed pages with the kind of familiarity that only came from revisiting old favorites.I remembered Leo telling me during breakfast that Neel had read through every single book on the shelves in the entrance hall. I still found that hard to believe because there were hundreds of books in the hall, from various genres and countries.“Hey,” he greeted with his usual soft smile, looking up as I approached. He set the book aside, closing it gently as if saying farewell to an old friend. “Ready for our little adventure?”“Yeah,” I replied, trying to inject some excitement into my voice. In truth

After a while in the park, Neel stood and stretched. “Want to check out the bookstore now?” he asked with a grin.“Only if you promise to buy me ice cream,” I said, giving him my hand to pull me up.He laughed. “Okay, books then ice cream. Sounds like a plan.” He pulled me to my feet, and together, we made our way to the entrance of the park.“An amazing plan,” I added with a smile. We walked in comfortable silence for a while, the sound of the water lapping at the shore filling the space between us. It was peaceful here, away from the chaos of the house, and for the first time since Grandma’s death, I found myself truly relaxing.“So,” Neel began as we reached the edge of the park. “How are you holding up?”His question caught me off guard. “What do you mean?”He smiled knowingly. “It’s a lot, isn’t it? Moving here, adjusting to all of us… I know it can’t be easy leaving your life behind.”I bit my lip, trying to find the right words. At this point, everyone in the house had asked me

As the sun faded behind the horizon, Neel and I rode back together on his motorcycle. We spent a couple of hours at the town’s local museum. The building wasn't anything extraordinary but had its old charm. We spent around two hours inside, moving from one section to another, reading the information on the exhibit labels and taking pictures. Along with a history section, the museum also had zoology and botany departments. There were taxidermies of wild cats, bears and reptiles, fossils and skeletons of extinct species, plant samples from different parts of the countries and various chats describing the living conditions of various plants and animals. The local history exhibits were kind of interesting, displaying the heritage and cultural shifts in the town over the last three centuries. There were many displays dedicated to the native tribes of the region too. That ended up being my favourite section. At first, I thought the museum would be boring, but it wasn’t. Neel made

I sat on the edge of my bed, staring at my phone. The screen glowed, showing the time. 1:55 AM. I’d told myself that I wouldn’t wait up for him, that I didn’t care if Lucas showed up or not. But here I was, counting down the minutes, my stomach in knots. It was stupid. I knew it was. I didn’t want this, didn’t want him. At least that’s what I kept telling myself whenever bits of consciousness kicked in to let me know that I kissed his brother, the same day. My fingers hovered over the phone, and the urge to send him a message rang when I saw he was online on I*******m. But what would I even say? Ask where he was? Or why he hadn’t bothered to text? No. That would make it seem like I cared too much. Like I was waiting for him. And I couldn’t give him that kind of satisfaction. Different thoughts and questions came to my mind. I fell on my bed telling myself that I was being stupid. That it wasn't me. I couldn't possibly wait for a man, especially Lucas, to show up and pla

I stood on the balcony, arms folded on the railing, staring out at the quiet forest. The cool night air brushed against my skin, but I barely felt it. My mind was spinning, replaying the kiss I had shared with Caspian just moments ago. I could still feel the heat of his lips on mine, the electric sensation that surged through my body when he touched me. I wasn't sure what I was feeling—anger, confusion, desire-all of it swirled together in a way that left me disoriented. I didn't want this. I shouldn't want this. But I did. And now, he was asking me to come to his office, and I knew deep down that nothing good was going to come of it. My heart pounded in my chest, and for a moment, I considered staying out here, staying safe. But something was pulling me, dragging me back inside. The way he kissed me, the way he looked at me, as though he saw right through the careful facade I was trying to build for myself. I couldn't resist the pull. Five minutes, he had said. Five min

I stared at him, locked in my place as his fingers softly brushed against my neck. It made my skin prickle. “Do you want this?” Caspian’s voice was a low rumble, the words hanging between us. He didn’t need to elaborate on what he was asking; I knew. My gaze flicked away from him for a moment, trying to gather my thoughts, but my heart hammered so loudly I was sure he was hearing every single beat. “I know this must be very confusing for you,” he continued, his voice softer now, more coaxing. “But this is me, Kat. The real me.”I realised he wasn’t just asking about what was happening now—he was asking if I was ready to dive into the depths of who he truly was, no matter how dark or complicated that might be.My throat was dry. I tried to swallow but couldn’t. “What... what am I supposed to do?”The words came out small, trembling with the fear and curiosity coursing through me. My eyes flicked nervously over the room again, taking in the dim lighting and the air thick with anticip

I woke up with a start the next morning, the remnants of the previous night clinging to me like shadows. The room was bathed in morning light, but it did little to chase away the haze of my thoughts. I lay still, staring at the ceiling as memories of Caspian flooded back—his voice, his touch, the intensity in his eyes. It played in an endless loop in my mind, and no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t shake it. ‘What have I done?’ The question that had lingered since I first arrived in Washington once again echoed in my head. “What have I done?” I mumbled it, thinking maybe saying it out loud would make me stop doing what I was doing. It was one of the worst feelings—to do something in the heat of the moment and then question or regret it in the days that followed. For the last three days, I had been grappling with this, my interactions with Caspian and the other brothers replaying incessantly in my mind. Sitting up, I ran my hands through my disheveled hair, trying to ground

  • My 7 Deadly Stepbrothers    REALIZATION

I didn’t want to talk about the Salvatore family with Cami. It was too depressing to have that conversation with her. I didn't want to talk to her about Alaric, or about my mother, not about Derek lying in the hospital while his sons tried to salvage the mess he unknowingly helped create. For once, I just wanted to talk about myself. And—more specifically—I wanted to talk about Caspian.“So, let me get this straight.” Cami’s voice was clear through the speaker, cutting through the quiet of my dimly lit bedroom. “You like Caspian?”I groaned, rolling onto my stomach and burying my face in my pillow for a second before lifting it again. “God, don’t say it like that. I didn't mean it like that. I meant there are things that have happened, and he has done things that made me feel weird.”“Like what? The true feeling you've been hiding for months?” She let out a breathless laugh. “Kat, this is huge. You’ve been dodging relationships for years, and now you’re telling me you have actual fee

Alaric knew something. That much was clear the moment he stepped into the dining room, his presence wrapped around the air like a noose, slowly tightening around all of us. His sharp, assessing gaze skimmed over the table, taking in our frozen postures and the lingering tension that none of us could shake off. Then, as if he hadn’t just walked into a room full of people on the brink of plotting his downfall, he smiled. A slow, knowing, chilling smile appeared to scare us. “Why does it look like someone just died?” he mused, his voice was light and easy, but there was something underneath it—something taunting, something dangerous.Nobody answered.I could feel the tension radiating from Caspian beside me, the way Lucas’s fingers tightened around his fork, and the barely restrained scoff from Dev.Alaric didn’t seem to mind the silence. He strolled forward with unhurried confidence, like a predator stepping into a den of prey. Pulling out the chair next to Leo, he sat down, completely

  • My 7 Deadly Stepbrothers    TRUTH OVER DINNER

Dinner had never been that quiet. Not in the Salvatore house. The long dining table was filled with plates of steaming food—pasta, grilled chicken, and fresh bread—but no one seemed interested in eating. They were thinking about something, and while their hands moved mechanically I knew they wanted to know what was the important thing Caspian wanted to talk about. He told them that he had something important he wanted to share with them after the dinner. And I guess he shouldn't have shared that much information with the others before because the others were still thinking about it, trying to figure out what it might be. Ian already had a small idea, yet he could feel the tension in the room. As a result, he was very uncomfortable. I could see it in his eyes. The room was dimly lit, with the chandelier above us casting soft, golden light over the strained faces. Unlike other days, even Leo didn't fuss about the food or ask for dessert with the meal. And that's when I realise

  • My 7 Deadly Stepbrothers    SAFE HOUSE

I swallowed hard, my throat suddenly dried and felt like sandpaper when I tried to swallow the lump forming in my throat. I wasn’t sure about my own emotions, about what to feel—relief, panic, guilt? Maybe all of them at once, or maybe none. Mom had looked at me when I was coming downstairs to help Dev with the dinner, her expression was unreadable. Yet, I knew what was going on inside her head. She must have been afraid of what kind of person wouldn't be in this situation. I asked her what happened or if she needed help with something, and she simply said, “I don’t care what happens to me. As long as you’re safe, I'm willing to do anything in the world. You might not trust me right now, but believe me, my words are true. And I'm going to show it tomorrow.” I hadn’t known how to respond when she was being that open with her thoughts. I should have said something, anything, but I didn't. I couldn't find the right words to say, and thinking about it now, I guess it wouldn't have ma

“So, when are we going to tell the other about what is going on in the family?” I asked the two brothers who still looked conflicted. “If mom confesses tomorrow, their life will be in danger too. If Alaric finds out, he will take it out on whoever he finds.” Caspian and Lucas shared a secret look but told us nothing about it. I was sitting at the kitchen island, my fingers were wrapped around the cool ceramic of my untouched water glass. While, my mind was elsewhere—spinning, twisting, trying to make sense of everything we were about to do. But worse were the fears associated with our every move. That was the reason I wasn't speaking much because I was afraid my fears and what-ifs would slip out mistakenly in normal conversations. And I knew it would only damper their mood, so I heard them instead and tried to be positive about our little mission. “She's right. At this point I think we need to tell the others,” Dev said, stirring a simmering pot of pasta sauce. “This morning t

The room was much quieter after my mom had left. It had been more than an hour since she was gone. Yet, the heavy air of her decision lingered in the room that surrounded us, entering my brain through my nostrils. I couldn't stop thinking about it because it felt like an invisible force that had a huge surprise for everyone in the house. I still wasn’t sure if I believed her—if I could afford to believe her. I didn't know where I stood with her; sometimes, I had been acting like the best daughter in the world, while other times I felt as if she was my biggest enemy. I couldn't figure out how to act around her. Even though she had agreed to confess and that was ‘something not to look over’ according to Caspian, I couldn't bring myself to trust her completely. I knew I could have trusted her more when she told Derek the truth, but I couldn't help but think it was one of her other elaborate plans. “A woman can get anything if she wants it enough... anything.” Her words from years

He's the definition of cringe and intrusive thoughts.” “Yeah, that I know,” I agreed with him about Leo, because he had done some of the wildest things. However, after Ian disappeared on his birthday, Leo got a little serious about the things around him. “There's a lot more.” The way he said that made me think about what he meant by it. There was an undertone of some sort that I couldn't place, but it wasn't anything positive. The way he said that, it felt darker and chilling. “Well, I'd love to know more about you brothers than,” I said, hoping he would get the hint and will talk about himself then. ‘What are you trying to do?’ My brain questioned and I stopped myself from continuing, realizing that I was flirting with him. “You got time,” he said taking a seat on my bed and looked at the famed picture of me with

The air outside was cold and comforting, just walking outside through the entrance made me feel much at loose than I had been the whole day. A soft breeze carried the faint scent of the forest that surrounded the Salvatores’ estate, and moisture that brought me relief. The sky was covered with dark clouds and looked like it was going to rain soon. I was almost waiting for the rain, hoping to see the forest come to live. I was walking beside Caspian. I could feel the tension from the meeting still sitting heavily on Caspian's shoulders. Lucas was following closely behind us, his brows were still furrowed in deep thought, while Dev walked a few steps in front of us with Matthew. As we reached the driveway, Matthew paused. His shiny black Mercedes was waiting for him, the driver was inside. Matthew turned to face us, his demeanour was as calm and professional as ever. He had the same aura around him that at the beginning, I saw around Caspian. “I’ll wait for your call,” he said, his

Caspian’s office had turned into the Salvatore family's war room over the past few weeks. It was a room that once felt intimidating—lined with tall bookshelves, mahogany furniture, dark leather chairs, and the history it contained of me and Caspian. Now, it was a place where heavy discussions were taking place, to reach decisions that could alter the family’s fate. I was sitting in the corner of the room, feeling like an intruder in their world of business and law. Yet, as I watched Lucas and Caspian argue over the papers spread across the desk, I realized I wasn’t exactly an outsider anymore. I was part of the mess, whether I liked it or not.Matthew, the Salvatores’ lawyer, sat across from me. He was calm and collected despite the storm brewing in the room, trying to hear both sides. His neatly pressed suit and calm demeanour gave him an air of professionalism that felt out of place amidst the storm of words. Dev was pacing near the window, his hands were shoved deep into his po
