Mia's mother had found her when she was homeless and starving, living in the slums. With nowhere to go and no one to turn to, Mia's mother took her in.

If she didn't treat that woman's daughter well, wouldn't that be considered ungrateful? Wouldn't the deceased be disappointed?

After ensuring that Mia was completely out of sight, Madam Grace shook her head and returned to the mansion.

Mia flagged down a taxi by the roadside and returned to the school's dormitory. She had missed the day's classes and needed to copy some notes.

She actually wished she didn't have to go back to the dorm, to her room—the room she shared with Martha, her supposed best friend—but what other choice did she have?

Like Madam Grace had rightly said, her mother wouldn't be happy to see her in such a state. Mia needed to forget about the past, focus on the present, and move on. Right?

As soon as the taxi pulled up in front of the dormitory's imposing iron gates, Mia paid the driver and began walking slowly inside. But...

"Ma'am," a voice called gently from behind her.

She stopped in her tracks and turned around instantly.

Her eyes landed on a moderately tall, handsome man. Strangely, he looked both familiar and unfamiliar at the same time, if that makes any sense at all. She gave him a questioning gaze.

"I'm sorry, but you're Miss Mia Thompson, right?" The man smiled politely.

Mia nodded momentarily, wondering who this man was.

He also nodded and said, "I'm Lucas, Mr. Shawn's personal assistant."

Shawn? Mia furrowed her brows immediately. Who is Shawn?

"I was ordered to hand over the divorce papers to you."

"?????" The girl was utterly confused.

In the man's outstretched hand was a brown envelope.

Divorce papers? Her brows furrowed even more.

Then it suddenly dawned on her. Oh, divorce papers. Shawn... She recollected the impulsive marriage she had that morning. How could she have forgotten that she got married and immediately got divorced afterwards? Pathetic.

Letting out a small smile, she collected the brown file from the handsome man. "Thank you."

"I'll be back tomorrow to collect it after you've signed it," Lucas said with a nod.

Tomorrow? She didn't need until tomorrow. He didn't have to wait. She would sign the papers right at that moment—all she needed was a pen.

"Do you have a pen with—" But the man had already vanished into thin air.

Mia was left speechless once again. The man's boss had left her speechless that morning... Phew.

"Wait, how...?" Her voice trailed off.

Shrugging her shoulders, she headed inside the dorm.

She climbed the stairs to her room, and when she arrived in front of the door, she hesitated. She stood still for several seconds, taking deep breaths.

She wasn't ready to face Martha just yet.

Well, Martha should be in school by now, so she would have enough time to gather herself before Martha returned.

Exhaling through her mouth, she turned the doorknob and pushed open the door. But as soon as she shut the door behind her, she froze.

Martha was in the room—she hadn't gone to school that day.

What shocked Mia even more was the fact that the girl looked extremely distressed. Her eyes were swollen, her face puffy; she looked like someone who hadn't slept in weeks.

Has she been crying? A wave of concern washed over Mia, and she quickly went to sit beside her best friend on the bed.

She flung the file in her hand away, not caring where it landed. Her best friend was her main concern at that moment. All other thoughts running through her mind were immediately pushed aside.

"What's wrong? What happened to you, Martha?"

Martha looked up at Mia with a heart-wrenching face and broke into fresh tears.

Mia's heart ached as she watched her best friend in despair.

"Talk to me, Martha," she pleaded, already on the verge of tears herself.

Martha continued to cry for a while, and when she finally stopped, she stared directly into Mia's eyes with a look of guilt plastered on her face.

"I'm so sorry, Mia..." She choked on her tears.

"I didn't mean to ruin your relationship with Max. It was unintentional—I swear. I hate myself right now." Martha cried uncontrollably.

Mia watched her best friend with tear-filled eyes. She seemed so genuine; it must have been equally difficult for her... the whole situation...

"When I heard that you passed out after you left last night, I almost lost it," Martha sobbed.

"Early this morning, I rushed to the hospital, but I didn't find you there—I'm so sorry, Mia. I feel like killing myself right now. In fact, let me just commit suicide." She stood up abruptly, her face showing a desperate expression.

Mia's heart skipped a beat. She was extremely shocked. Suicide?! She quickly pulled Martha back down onto the bed, her face turning ashen.

Shaking her head vigorously, she said, "No, you can't do that."

"Let me just die, Mia. I don't deserve to be in this world any longer. Don't stop me, let me go!" Martha pleaded desperately, her heart shattered into pieces.

Mia's heart broke completely, and she started crying too. "If you leave, what will happen to me? You're the only friend I have—please don't die."

The two best friends cried loudly, their voices echoing for miles.

"It's not your fault."

It truly wasn't Martha's fault for falling in love with her best friend's boyfriend. Shit happens. Emotions can't be controlled like cars. Sometimes even cars fail to be controlled... Mia couldn't blame anyone. They were all victims of love.

Mia sniffled and spoke after a while. "It's okay, Martha. Just don't die, please."

Martha fell silent and wiped her tears away with the back of her hand. "You forgive me, really?"

Mia nodded her head vigorously.

"Awww, thank you, Mia! Thank you so much! You're the best friend ever!" Martha sobbed softly, tears streaming down her face.

The two friends embraced each other in a warm, relieved hug.

"It's okay," Mia assured as they remained wrapped in each other's arms.

Behind her best friend's head, Martha sneered evilly. She rolled her eyes in contempt. She had forced a great amount of tears from her eyes just to persuade and deceive this gullible girl. And now, her head was throbbing from crying too much.

She couldn't just snatch Max from Mia and dump her, just like that... no. The kids at school would label her as a bad person. The entire universe would curse at her for stealing her best friend's boyfriend. She would be tagged as a "boyfriend snatcher." Her public persona would be ruined, and her whole life would be over.

She never wanted that to happen. Never ever.
