Celeste sat opposite Diego. She poured him a cup of tea and slowly handed it to him.

"Interestingly, Mrs. Radcliffe also had Earl Grey tea when she visited," she said and noted the brief sparkle in Diego's eyes.

Celeste doubted Diego was entirely in the dark about what Georgina had said when she came to her.

He probably just wanted to hear what Georgina had said from someone else. This might be a kind of comfort to him, perhaps.

"Did she beg you not to expose the two of us?"

Diego had none of the manners or etiquette of a noble gentleman. His questions were blunt and direct as if he were interrogating a criminal.

Still, Celeste saw no need to argue and simply nodded. "Yes, that's correct."

"What exactly did she say?"

Diego didn't care much about whether Celeste agreed or not.

Celeste poured herself a glass of water and drank it slowly.

"Mrs. Radcliffe said you still have to live on, and this matter would be a fatal blow to your reputation. She hoped I would show mercy."
