Vivian’s POV

I don’t know why, but I allowed Belinda drag me all the way across town all in the name of shopping.

“We really shouldn’t be doing this,” I told Belinda who took out her purse and began to apply some makeup on her face. “Gosh, Bel, in a taxi?” I said and laughed.

Belinda would never cease to surprise me. She was always doing weird things, and when confronted about it, she would call it spontaneity.

“A girl has to look pretty all the time,” Belinda said defensively.

I watched her apply mascara on her eye lashes and shook my head in bewilderment. I also noticed that the driver was throwing us, Belinda especially, glances from time to time, but I said nothing. Belinda was never worried about how she was seen or perceived, and I stopped doing the worrying for her a long time ago.

“You had your makeup done before we left your apartment, Belinda, and you spent an hour on it!” I said.

“Yes, but that was some minutes ago. If I could retouch my makeup every passing second, trust me, I would,” Belinda said as she applied some lipstick on her lips. “We are going to this fancy boutique, and you have to look like the money you are going to spend there, otherwise those high-handed salesgirls would give you attitude,” Belinda schooled me.

I laughed and shook my head. Belinda acted as though I did not know any of these things, but I just let her have her way this time around.

“Well, it would have been better if we were going to spend our own money,” I said.

“Hell no, Vivian. The money is always sweeter when it is coming from the wallet of an ex-husband. Trust me, girl, now that he knows that if he embarrasses you, you are going to come for his money, he is going to act according,” Belinda said.

“Technically, he did not embarrass me. Georgia made the statement in an interview, not him,” I said, but Belinda blew it completely out of proportion.

“There you go! You are freaking defending him again!” Belinda was getting upset again. “Holly molly, this man has you wrapped up in his fingers, and it is disgusting to see,” Belinda said.

“Stop being dramatic, Belinda. I am only stating the fact, nothing else. Syrus was not even present at the time of the interview. It was just Georgia and her interviewer,” I explained, already exasperated that we were going down this road again.

“Okay, fine,” Belinda finally agreed with me. “But I still insist that he embarrassed you, because that was just an extension,” Belinda said.

“Oh gosh,” I said as my hands clasped my head in frustration, making Belinda laugh. “You know what, you are right. After all we are going to spend his money, aren’t we?”

“Yeah, I am always right!” Belinda squealed, feeling like a super-heroine already.

It was a long drive but we eventually arrived at one of the fanciest boutiques in the city.

“Belinda, their clothes would be freaking expensive!” I whispered to Belinda as we entered the boutique, but as usual, she was too stubborn to even listen to me.

Belinda turned to me defiantly and asked, “Would you rather spend that jerk’s money on anything else?”

I swallowed and said, “No, of course not,” because Belinda was right. From the look of things, I might end up taking only one or two dresses. I honestly wasn’t interested in shopping or doing anything at all with the money, but since it would get it out of my account, I welcomed it.

As we turned to proceed into the boutique, an unpleasant familiar voice floated into our ears.

“By the jerk, you mean Syrus?”

We turned and saw Georgia and Bonnie coming out of the boutique. They had obviously had a full round shopping spree.

“Yes,” Belinda looked at them and answered fearlessly.

I had opened my mouth to deny it, but Belinda beat me to it, and she stood in front of me, so there was no way I could have said something before her.

“And who might you be?” Georgia asked

“And who is asking?” Belinda asked Georgia in return.

I wanted to pull Belinda away. There were a ton of other fancy boutiques that we could go do; it didn’t have to be the very one Georgia and Bonnie were shopping at, but then again, the whole scene looked like a battle field, and for once, I wanted to see Georgia being ridiculed.

Georgia gasped. “Oh, she doesn’t know me?”

“She probably lives under a rock,” Bonnie said sarcastically.

“No, I am not, because I could roll out a list of very popular people around effortlessly, but you see this wannabe, I have never heard or seen her anywhere,” Belinda blew hot.

It was a lie, but it got to Georgia so well that I caught her face flinch at Belinda’s demeaning words.

“So this is who you are hanging out with now? An uncouth lady?” Bonnie threw the question at me, but Belinda was way more prepared for both of them than I would ever have imagined.

In fact, I had no idea that Belinda could be so antagonistic without even prepping for it.

“Does it hurt to see her with someone who stands up for her unlike what your so-called brother could ever do?” Belinda fired at Bonnie.

Bonnie opened her mouth to give a response, but Belinda was far from done.

“You are so used to bullying and shit that you do not even realize that it actually sucks. You claim to be someone of importance, meanwhile you are walking around town and living under the shadow of a wannabe. Aw, I feel sorry for you, and for you as well, Georgia, since you have to break a home to find joy.”

My mouth dropped open in shock as well as Bonnie’s and Georgia’s.

Belinda turned to me and said triumphantly, “Vivian dear, let us go and squander that JERK’s money on some hot-looking dresses.”

Then Belinda dragged me into the store, leaving them stupefied.

For some reason, she was very upset that Bonnie could not even stand up for her and defend her just the way Vivian’s friend did for her. If Bonnie had been sharp witted just like her, then it would not have been a lost battle. Not only was Vivian shopping in the exact store that she shopped, she also had the nerve to set her up with her friend.“And we just stood there and did nothing,” Georgia said as she flopped on the chair. She did not want to specifically point all the accusing fingers towards Bonnie, because now that she was doing everything possible to get into this family, she should not be found pushing blames around. But at the same time, she refused to be a pushover like they did to Vivian

  • Mr. CEO We're Done!   The Big Announcement

Vivian’s POVIt was a new week, and I was starting it off with a good spirit at work. I had decided before getting to work that I would be happy regardless. Belinda had forced me into picking out more clothes than I had anticipated to buy. Apparently, she wanted me to have more than enough clothes.“I really don’t care for myself, Vivian. You know I have more than enough clothes,” Belinda had said in her defense.“I know, but you should pick some for yourself, after all, you dragged me all the way out here,” I had countered her claim.“No, thank you. You know I want absolutely nothing to do with that jerk’s money,” Belinda had said. Her words sort of stung, but I let it slide. She knew I didn’t also want any of Syrus’s money especially now that we are no longer married, yet she forced his money into my bank account. Another thing that had stung was the way she had flippantly said it, without recalling that it had been this very issue that had almost caused a rift between us.Belinda

Vivian’s POVGeorgia’s announcement sent my nervous system reeling. I almost passed out when she said it, and I knew deep down that if Syrus wasn’t in on it, she wouldn’t be making such a public announcement.Hours later, when the TV had eventually come on, I had to listen to those exact words of Georgia all over again without being able to take my eyes away from the smile on her face, and the glint in her eyes. Somehow I felt that she was looking straight into my eyes and taunting me.I couldn’t stand it, so I excused myself and dashed off to the restroom. No one would suspect that it was the “fast rising star’s” announcement that had turned my mood upside down. When I got to the restroom, I cried my eyes out. Here I was thinking that I had gotten over Syrus completely, so whatever he did, or whoever he was with would not affect my emotions in anyway, but I had been totally wrong. What made it even more heart-wrenching was the fact that it was the same Georgia who had been responsibl

  • Mr. CEO We're Done!   Failed Appointment

Vivian’s POV My stomach churned in annoyance. I had hoped that Syrus would fail, so that I would have an excuse not to get him involved, but it seems that he took the whole thing more seriously than I anticipated.“Welcome, Syrus,” Doctor Pedro greeted Syrus with a grin.I gritted my teeth to prevent me from screaming in anger. It was just painful to see that everyone else adored and liked Syrus without knowing how hurtful he could be. Syrus wore one of his suits that suited him well like it was made personally for him. The first time I saw Syrus in that pair of suit, it was as though he had fallen off from a magazine. I took my eyes away to avoid looking at him, or even catching me staring.“Why would I not make it?” Syrus deliberately turned to me with a quizzical gaze.“Well, you are almost late,” I said defensively.“Almost, but not late. According to my wristwatch,” Syrus said glancing at his expensive watch, “I am right on time,” Syrus said, his voice reeking of arrogance and pr

  • Mr. CEO We're Done!   A Crazier Idea

Vivian’s POV The moment I got out of the hospital, I walked so fast that even if Syrus intended to catch up with me, it would not be easy for him. I ensured that I came out first and fortunately, found a cab waiting. The last thing I wanted was Syrus following me out of the hospital and blaming me for ruining our first appointment.I knew that it was my fault, but I would rather swallow a frog than admit that it was my fault.I described Belinda’s address to the cab driver and he sped off immediately. Instinctively, I turned to check if Syrus had attempted to catch up with me to explain things, or even ask me how I was faring, but I caught sight of him leisurely walking out of the hospital and walking straight to his parked car without even looking around.More than I would like to admit, it hurt me deeply that Syrus was being so nonchalant about my feelings and emotions. By tomorrow, I would have to see him in that office again, and there was nothing I could do about it. I placed my

Vivian’s POVI felt better after visiting Belinda and talking about the hospital episode with her. It was even easier than I thought to admit to her how everything had made me feel, and even better that she did not judge me at all, instead, came up with a wild idea that she had me smiling and shaking my head as I did my job the next day.The appointment was not until hours later, and although Belinda had fought to go with me for moral support, I managed to dissuade her; it wasn’t necessary, and besides, I did not want Syrus to think I came with someone to bully him, because that is exactly what Belinda was hoping to do…bully the jerk. Then Belinda had given me hours of strict lectures about her extremely crazy idea. At first, I did not want to deal with it, but then again, Syrus wasn’t exactly a wonderful husband to me, and it just seemed like the right thing to do. My head was bowed and engrossed with what I was doing, plus the thoughts in my head that I did not see Dan show up in f

  • Mr. CEO We're Done!   The Audacity

Vivian’s POVI stared at Georgia, and for some seconds, I did not know how exactly to react at her audacity. “How did you know I work here?” I asked. It was not the question I had wanted to ask, but then that was what came out of my mouth instead. This was my workplace, and certainly not the place for this kind of conversation. Well, maybe Georgia knew that she couldn’t show this level of audacity without getting a piece of how I felt if she had accosted me in a different place. Before Georgia could open her mouth to speak, the two ladies, who always talked about her walked in and saw Georgia. They gasped, star-struck.“Oh my goodness!” They screamed in delight and rushed over to us. I could see the look of pride in Georgia’s eyes at their reaction and the smile that played on her lips was that of mischief, and I rolled my eyes in disgust.“It is really you, Georgia!” the squealed in delight as they spoke together at once, as though they had been preparing for this day for years.

This would be the first time I would be a father, and I would not take any chances at all. Not that I believed completely, because before the divorce, there were no signs that Vivian could be pregnant, although not that I paid much attention to her body, but w

He had no idea that Anderson had gotten this worse. Syrus might have been busy and occupied with other things, especially with all that had been going on with him recently, but he always ensured that Anderson’s medication bills were paid in full, including his salary and other bonuses, which was why he was shocked to see Anderson in this situation. But Anderson was smiling.“You took longer than I thought. I thought I was going to die without seeing your face,” Anderson said.“I shouldn’t have taken this long to come,” Syrus said and meant it. “I didn’t know that the illness had eaten this deep into you,” he added.“No man is ever going to live forever, Syrus. The most important thing is that they are on the right path,” Anderson said through labored breath. “I am not a sad sick man livin

Years after Anderson introduced Syrus to the Frenchman and Syrus was able to bring the company back to its feet, he kept Anderson employed. His mother never liked it. In fact, she antagonized Syrus for years.“You should fire him, Syrus. He maintained a close relationship with your father even after knowing the pain and heartache he put us all through,” Nancy repeatedly told Syrus.“That would be you asking me to fire all the board members and senior staff, mum,” Syrus had told Nancy, but she had been adamant.“Then fire them and replace them all if need be!” She had said fiercely.“Mum, these are people who have worked hard in the company. They know exactly what they are doing. I cannot fire them out of the blues and just replace them like a pair of shoes. It could bring down the company, and you know this,” Syrus had argued r

Before now, Marie had been troubled about Mr. Vale’s health, and I had been troubled about the revelation I got about my family from Leon, but now, we both just seemed happy. It was as though the love that she shared; the same one I had resented before now was a soothing balm to me. It reminded me of the love and thrill I had felt with Syrus when we initially met years ago. It had been intense and deep, and it had been the best time of my life, and surprisingly, the memory of it did not fill my heart with anger as it usually woul

Vivian’s POVI stayed with Marie in the hospital after we took Mr. Vale to see his doctor at the hospital. We hadn’t exchanged a word, and there wasn’t even a need to. As we sat close to each other, I heard Marie mumbling words of prayer to God for Vale. I couldn’t hear the words she spoke, but somehow, I was deeply touched. As much as I would love to resent them, there was no doubt that they loved each other like never before.“Marie?” The doctor called. We both stood up straighter and looked at him. Marie had been so soaked in her supplication and I had been immersed in her devotion to him that we both hadn’t noticed the presence of the doctor.“How is he?” Marie asked instantly. I found myself praying and wishing that nothing bad would happen to Mr. Vale. Not that my feelings towards him for abandoning his family had changed, nor my feelings towards Marie for taking a man away from his family had changed, but I still didn’t want him to die.If I didn’t want someone as dangerous as

He should have known that confrontation with a man like Ken alone was a bad idea, but then again, no one knew this part of Syrus’s life. Even Vivian who almost got to know, Syrus managed to keep her in the dark, but now, things were slowly getting out of hand. Ken had been so good and smart with what he was doing that he ensured that his face was faced out of the camera. The only person the world could see was Syrus, and of course, to them, he was trying to kill an innocent citizen simply because he was wealthy and powerful. Syrus had stayed holed up in the house, because right now, he could not bear to face the judgmental faces of everyone that knew him, including the colleagues that he hired himself.“What the heck

Vivian’s POVThe revelation I got from Leon still had me reeling with shock. Hearing that Dad had used up our inheritance and wanted to give me out in a contract marriage to pay off his debt, I had thought that that was the height of betrayal from my family members, but this was worse than I could take.Ted now had blood in his hand!I shuddered at the remembrance of it. Thankfully, when Leon brought me back to the house, Marie and Mr. Vale had been too engrossed with having their lover’s time together to even notice that I was drenched in dread, so I had just delivered what I was sent and I went into my room. I could not even bring myself to eat anything. In fact, the thought of food made my stomach retch. This was no longer a case of drug dealing; it was a murder case. First of all, Ted had gotten involved in drugs, which was even a great crime in the country. Then he had killed Jane in cold blood simply because she had betrayed him. To make things even scarier, he had planted a pi

Maybe I should just let sleeping dogs lie, especially now that I had gotten far away from Ted, but how far away can I ever possibly get? Each time I think I have successfully run away from a problem, it pops right back up and stares at me squarely in the face. For instance, the last person I expected to run into in this peaceful town that I had gotten a job was Leon, the same man whom I had seen with Ted who had a dangerous look in his eyes. These were signs that I could never actually run away from my reality. There was Ken and the conniving inspector that I had fled from. I began to feel sweaty and hot in my stomach, and extremely uncomfortable, but I did not know what else to do.“Here,” Leon turned.I almost jumped out of my skin when I heard his voice. Then I turned around and saw him holding a glass of juice. “I have been watching you, and you look like you are about to pass out,” Leon added when I didn’t make any move to collect the juice from him.“Where did you get this from?” I asked him skeptically.“There’s a restaurant just by the corner,” Leon answered, his hand still stretched at me.I took the juice from Leon, because I realized that I highly needed it, especially with how long I have been standing and wai
