Chapter 46

Author: Hauling Treasures
Iris walked over and sat down across from Mike.

"What's the matter?" she asked, going straight to the point.

Mike was three years younger than Yvonne. Yvonne said she liked that because young men have stronger hips.

Mike was handsome and had a boyish charm. Yvonne had spent a lot of money on him.

"There's nothing between me and that girl, I swear. She likes me and confessed to me, but I didn’t accept her. Yvonne thinks I'm cheating on her..." Mike explained.

At this point, Iris felt no desire to hear more. Having experienced betrayal herself, she could not tolerate unfaithful men. She trusted Yvonne's judgment and knew she wouldn’t have ended the relationship without solid evidence.

"You don’t have to explain to me," she said coldly, her tone devoid of warmth.

Mike pressed his lips together. "I know it’s none of your concern, but Yvonne refuses to see me or listen to me. You’re her best friend; can you help me talk to her?"

Iris replied firmly, "No."

She would not interfere in

"I got tired of him, so I broke up with him. We're adults. Do I need any other reason?" Yvonne replied, her tone indifferent. Now it was Iris' turn to be confused. So, her night out at the bar yesterday wasn’t to heal from heartbreak?"What's the deal with you?" Iris asked."I'm not young anymore, and my family is pushing for marriage. There's no way I can marry Mike, and my family would never agree anyway. I didn't date him to marry him. Life was boring, so I needed some excitement. Besides, I treated him well when we were together. Now that I want to break up, he should be more considerate and stop clinging to me," Yvonne explained.Iris was impressed by Yvonne's carefree attitude. "Impressive," she said, giving her a thumbs up.She took out Mike's letter and handed it to Yvonne. "Mike asked me to give this to you."Yvonne took it and tore it up without a second glance.Iris was taken aback. With widened eyes, she asked, "Aren't you going to read it first?""I’ve already deci

Fiora sat down, picked up another set of cutlery, and tried a piece of ribs. However, she immediately spat it out. It was undercooked and tasted terrible. She couldn't even bite through it.Frowning, she exclaimed, "I did as the recipe said – why is it undercooked?""Let's just eat out," Stanley suggested, standing up.Fiora had hoped to impress him with her cooking skills, but she ended up embarrassing herself."You've never cooked before, so this is normal," Stanley assured her.Fiora pouted. "Cooking looks simple, but when you have to do it yourself, it's actually really difficult. You have to control the heat, know the exact order and amount of seasoning to use...""Is that so?" Stanley had never considered it, assuming women were naturally adept at cooking.Iris could already cook when she married him. In fact, she was an excellent cook, unlike Fiora. But it's understandable when he thought about it. Iris and Fiora came from vastly different backgrounds.Fiora was born w

Iris was washing the dishes when her phone suddenly rang. She wiped her hands and answered the call."Iris," Mike's voice came through, sounding nervous and anxious."What's the matter?" Iris' tone towards Mike had softened now that she knew it was Yvonne who had abandoned Mike."Are you at home?" he asked."Yes," Iris replied."Do you... do you know where your husband is?" Mike asked. He was unaware that Iris and Stanley had already divorced as Yvonne didn’t bother informing him.He didn't know how he should tell Iris about Stanley's infidelity.Iris seemed to have guessed something. "Did you see him?"There was a moment of hesitation on Mike’s end before he replied, "...Yes. He... he..."Iris was Yvonne's best friend, so Mike decided he must tell her the truth. "I'll send you a video; you can see for yourself." He quickly hung up, took a video of Stanley, and sent it to Iris.Iris opened the video and saw Stanley kissing a woman on the street, their lips tightly pressed tog

The woman brightened up again. "So, getting a divorce certificate is not the top priority. The key is to find a way to maximize the benefits.""Be patient when necessary, strike when the time is right," Iris advised. She looked at the asset list the woman had provided and was surprised to see the assets total tens of millions. She had to reassess her opinion of the woman. When they first met, the woman had dressed very plainly, likely because her husband had just cheated on her. Today, she had dressed casually too. It's almost impossible to tell that she possessed such wealth from her appearance.Iris was reminded of her former self. Once women married, they often prioritized their family, neglecting their own needs and desires.Having experienced similar struggles, Iris carefully devised a series of detailed plans for the client. She emphasized that now was not the right time for divorce; rather, she should secure the assets first. The woman fully agreed with Iris' strategy. "You

The wealthy woman felt humiliated."Ill-mannered wretch!" Renee fumed, her face flushed red and her eyes wide with rage.In the past, Iris had endured her insults out of respect for Stanley. But now that she was divorced, would she still tolerate such behavior?"You call all this shouting 'manners'? If that's your definition of manners, then I'd rather be without them," Iris replied, her calm demeanor contrasting sharply with Renee's fury.Renee, driven to a boiling point, shot back, "All you have is a sharp tongue. My son will never want you again. Even if you beg and cry, you won't step through the Stein family's door ever again. Stanley's dating the daughter of the Just family now, and they’re about to get married. You’re just a discarded woman, thrown away like an old shoe. You have no future."Renee's words were venomous, lacking a filter in her anger. Iris' face paled, her hands clenched tightly into fists at the sides."If a legally married partner can be easily discarded

"No, it's great. I really like it. That's why I want to know which restaurant it's from. I plan to go there this evening to try out some other dishes," Jason said.Iris was taken aback. "Um, actually, I made it myself..." She quickly explained, "When you asked me to buy food for you, I had just finished cooking. I thought I wanted to do something for you since you've been so kind to me ever since I started working here. I thought the food I made should be more hygienic than the food from restaurants, so I took the liberty of bringing you my own cooking."Jason stared at her for several seconds before remarking, "Well, I guess my mouth is out of luck.""I can cook for you," Iris offered almost immediately. "As long as you give me more opportunities to practice."Jason raised an eyebrow. "Am I not treating you well enough already? You're already handling cases independently as a legal intern. Isn't that practice?""Yes, you're right," Iris replied, acknowledging his support with gra

Jason reached out and took the food container, saying, "Thank you.""You're welcome," Iris replied with a smile."I live alone, so it might not be appropriate to invite you in," Jason said, closing the door promptly behind him.Iris blinked, realizing she had been left outside without even a sip of water. Although no one witnessed this embarrassing scene, it still felt quite awkward. She cleared her throat and turned to leave. She herself had not had dinner yet because she was busy cooking. Fortunately, she had saved a portion for herself. Now, it was time to go home to eat.Meanwhile, Stanley had been summoned back to the Stein family mansion by Renee. Upon entering, he spotted Fiora standing in the dining room, looking at him with a sweet smile. "Welcome home" she greeted.Stanley responded with a simple acknowledgment.Renee said to Fiora warmly, "Hurry up and sit down.""I’ll help serve the food," Fiora said."Oh, no need. He couldn't believe his eyes. Someone actually dared do such a thing to a lawyer's front door? They must be tired of living. As he reached for his phone to call the police, he hesitated. Who would call him a cheater? Aside from Iris, he hadn't done anyone else wrong.Had she finally lost her composure? It should have been an infuriating situation, there was no trace of anger on his face. Instead, a hint of excitement flickered in his eyes. He dialed Iris' number."Sorry, the number you have dialed is currently busy..."It was then that he remembered Iris had blocked him. He rubbed his forehead helplessly but assured himself that it was fine; he would make her come to him on her own.Early the next morning, Iris was awakened by a knock at her door. Upon opening it, she found two police officers standing outside."Are you Iris Glover?" one officer asked.Iris nodded, "Yes, that's me.""We received a police report and have come to ask you some questions," he said. The other offi

Brad arrived at Iris' house precisely at ten past seven. Holding the lunchbox, he rang the doorbell. Iris had just woken up, still in her pajamas, and wondered who could possibly be at the door this early. Sometimes, if she weren't driving, Brad would pick her up at around ten to eight. He wouldn't come this early. When she opened the door, she found him dressed in smart casual attire — a suit jacket, trousers, and white sneakers. In the past, he would wear cool attires like casual pants with a hoodie or a leather jacket, but after accompanying Iris to court on formal occasions, he had adapted his wardrobe considerably. Although he still felt uncomfortable in formal wear, he looked much more mature than before."You're here so early?" Iris asked, surprised."When you're busy, you never eat properly," Brad replied, entering without hesitation. He knew the passcode to her house anyway, so he made himself at home. He walked directly to the dining table. "Go freshen up and change yo

"Are you really going to take on that case, by the way?" Brad asked Iris.Iris asked him back, "Why shouldn't I?""This kind of case could go viral online and attract public scrutiny. I'm worried you'll face backlash. Many people these days lack critical thinking and just follow the crowd," Brad expressed.Iris responded firmly, "I'm a lawyer. I just need to fulfill my duties and do my job well. If I have to weigh the pros and cons before taking on every case..." she turned to him, adding, "What would be the point of doing this job?"Brad fell silent for a moment, then conceded, "Yes, you're right. Don't worry, I'll be at your side."Iris poured cold water on his enthusiasm. "I don't need you to be at my side. You need to go independent.""I don't want to," Brad said, sticking close to her, as if afraid of being left behind."What? Are you just going to cling to me?" she asked."Yes, I am," he chuckled."By the way, I need some fruits but I don't have time to go to the superma

Brad was right, Fiora knew that now. Yet her personality made it difficult for her to apologize and admit her mistakes. When Brad tried to take a sip of water, she snatched the glass from him.Brad looked at her, speechless. Fiora lifted her chin defiantly. "Whether he cares about me or not is none of your business."Brad wanted to ask her if her head had been kicked by a donkey. Instead, he said, "Alright, think what you want. I'm not your brother; I'm not gonna worry about you."Unintentionally, his words elicited a silent reaction from Iris, who lowered her gaze."My brother is overseas dealing with his heartbreak; he doesn't have time to worry about me," Fiora lamented. "I wonder if all the luck in our family has gone to the financial side. Is that why we're so unlucky in everything else? Half a year ago, my brother announced that he had a girlfriend. My mom had even met her and apparently really liked her, but then it all fell apart. My love life is rocky, and my brother's is

Iris said, "Just shut up and order."Brad obediently picked up the menu.Fiora watched the exchange, somewhat shocked at how readily Brad complied with Iris' command. Before this, she and Brad had looked down on each other, and their mutual disdain was evident. She had always thought Brad was too wild and could not be easily controlled, yet here he was, completely under Iris' command. She wondered how Iris had managed to subdue such a wilful young man, especially given Brad's less-than-ideal character.Having spent considerable time with Iris, Brad knew her preferences in food. He ordered the dishes he knew she liked, along with some of his own favorites, before turning to Fiora. "What would you like?""Anything," Fiora replied, prompting Brad to place a random order for her. While they waited for the food, Fiora broached the topic that lingered between them. "About what happened before...""Let's not dwell on the past," Iris interjected. To her, an apology from Fiora held littl

Iris didn't stop. She felt that they weren't acquainted so there was nothing to talk about.Fiora chased after her, tugging on Brad's arm as she ran past him. "Help me out."Brad thus followed behind her, saying, "If she doesn't want to talk to you, don't force her..."Fiora shot him an annoyed glare. Brad was speechless. Why did she glare at him? She was still the same spoiled brat."Wait, I'm not here to be your enemy," Fiora called as she caught up with Iris.Iris had to cross the street, but the continuous flow of traffic forced her to stop, giving Fiora a chance to catch up to her."I just want to apologize," Fiora said.Iris turned back in surprise. Those unexpected words caught her off guard. She did not expect it from Fiora at all.Why would Fiora suddenly apologize to her?"I know Stanley's married now. He married that evil woman," Fiora continued.Learning that Stanley had married Wendy had changed Fiora's opinion of Iris, but it wasn't until last night that she t

When Iris opened the door, she was shocked to see that it was Samuel. "What are you doing here?" she asked, puzzled.Samuel replied, "Mr. Just is not in the country. He asked me to check on you. Do you need anything?"Jason had seen Iris' message, but she had deleted it before he could listen to it. Concerned about her, had sent Samuel to check if everything was alright since he was abroad.Iris tightened her grip on the doorknob. Something stirred in the bottom of her heart. She tried to sound calm as she said, "I'm fine.""I'll be in the country all month. If you need anything, feel free to call me," Samuel said, handing her his business card. "Here's my contact."Iris hesitated for a moment before taking it."Are you sure you're fine?" Iris walked out of the shop with the cake in hand. When she spotted Renee, she ignored her.Renee finally recognized the qualities Iris possessed when she compared Iris to Wendy — Iris was cultured, well-mannered, polite and respected her elders."Iris," Renee called out involuntarily.Iris merely looked back for a second before getting into her car.Renee stood frozen in a daze. If Iris were still her daughter-in-law, she mused, she wouldn't have to endure this humiliation. A shiver ran down her spine at the thought of Wendy. She perceived Wendy as a devil. Wendy was the most evil person she had ever seen! She couldn't imagine how a person could be that evil.Yet, Renee never considered her own flaws while judging others.Renee's unexpected appearance did not make Iris feel anything. Iris was in no mood to talk. Yvonne shook her gently, asking, "Do you want me to take you out to relax?""Not interested," Iris replied, looking visibly exhausted. When the takeout arrived, she only picked at her food, taking just a few bites before losing interest. It wasn't that the food wasn't tasty; she simply had no appetite.Yvonne received a phone call. She asked Iris if she wanted to join her. Iris declined."Then I'll see you next time," Yvonne said while getting up."Mmh," Iris responded absentmindedly. After Yvonne left, Iris packed up the food and decided to go to bed early. The day of the trial arrived as scheduled. Despite her best efforts, the trial proved challenging, and the outcome was not what she had hoped for. The client commented, "Honestly, it's better than what I expected. There's a big difference between five years and ten years. I'll reform well, show good behavior, and try to get released early."Iris remained silent. The outcome wasn't satisfactor
