Chapter 335

Author: Hauling Treasures
Glaring coldly at her daughter, Rinkah spat, "You should have just died."

With a derisive snort, she stormed out.

Liandra almost lost her balance, but Iris quickly steadied her.

"Brad, hurry, go start the car," she instructed. Brad put away the phone and rushed ahead to start the car.

Iris helped Liandra into the car.

"Go to the hospital," she said.

Brad nodded. He glanced at Iris through the rearview mirror before he drove off.

At the hospital, Iris asked Brad to buy some food for Liandra. However, Liandra didn't eat anything. She simply lay silently in bed.

Iris stayed by her side.

As evening approached, Liandra said, "You should go home."

Iris had already given Liandra her phone number. She said reassuringly, "If you need anything, call me."

Liandra didn't reply, but Iris knew she had heard. Tucking her in gently, Iris said, "I'll see you tomorrow."

Liandra murmured a soft acknowledgment.

Iris left the ward, gently closing the door behind her.

Brad stubbornly argued, "You said 'most'. That means there are still a small number of people who enjoy curry in the summer. If both of us happen to dislike it in summer, of course it counts as a common interest." Iris chuckled, "Alright, if you insist on thinking that way, then so be it." She chose not to argue further as it was a trivial matter."I'm going to take a nap; wake me when we arrive," Iris said. Brad nodded, "Okay." He was aware that Iris had been getting very little sleep lately due to the case. As he glanced at her, he saw her resting against the car window with her eyes closed, looking fatigued. Out of consideration, he drove slower, a rare move for someone who usually enjoyed speeding and racing. When they reached the restaurant, Iris was still asleep. Not wanting to disturb her, Brad parked the car and pulled out his phone to play games while waiting. After about forty minutes, Iris slowly woke up. Squinting as she looked around, she asked, "Have we arrived?

Brad urged, "Hurry up and eat."Iris was speechless. How could the two of them finish so much food? She looked at Brad, wondering if he was throwing a tantrum.Brad was already eating. Noticing that Iris hadn't picked up her cutlery, Brad asked, "Aren't you hungry?"Seeing him eat so quickly, Iris realized he must be quite hungry. "I am," she replied, finally picking up her cutlery and starting to eat. After the meal, Brad drove her home. He dropped her off at the gate of her apartment complex."You live here?" he asked."Yes, but I'll be moving soon," Iris replied."Why? This place is very close to the law firm, so it's very convenient. Why would you move?" he inquired."I only rented an apartment here because my house is under renovation. My house is ready now, so I'm ready to move out," Iris explained."When are you moving? Let me know; I'll help you," Brad offered.Iris smiled. "I've already booked a moving company." She teased him, "As if a pampered young master like yo

Iris regarded Rinkah with a cold expression. "Please watch your words. Also, we're in a hospital, so keep your voice down. Causing a scene here won't benefit you in any way.""Oh, yeah? What can you do to me?" Rinkah shot back defiantly."I can't do anything to you," Iris replied, "but the law can certainly do something to you."Rinkah remained unconvinced, but her attitude softened slightly. "Are you threatening me?""I'm not threatening you; I just want you to behave like a civilized person," Iris said firmly. "Have you ever fulfilled your responsibilities as a mother? If you had shown a little more love to your daughter, she wouldn't be in this position today.""You..." Rinkah struggled to counter Iris' words, feeling frustrated. "You have no evidence against me, and you know it."In her mind, she hadn’t committed any serious wrongdoings. Her most serious wrongdoing was abandoning her daughter when she was very young. She had consulted a lawyer about that. The lawyer had told

Liandra murmured a soft acknowledgment and covered her head with the blanket. Iris watched her silently for a moment before quietly exiting the ward and gently closing the door behind her. Outside the hospital, Brad pulled up in his car, and Iris opened the door to get in."Am I a qualified chauffeur, Iris?" he asked, as if he was fishing for a compliment."Yes," Iris replied.Brad smiled.…Time flew by, and it was time for Liandra to appear in court again. This time, she appeared much more confident than before. Perhaps her previous experience had made her less nervous, or maybe it was the reassuring presence of Iris beside her.As Iris organized the documents, she felt a pair of eyes on her. Looking up, she saw Stanley sitting on the defendant's side, acting as her defense attorney. His intense gaze was fixed on Iris, but Iris calmly averted her eyes, focusing on preparing for the trial.Eventually, the presiding judge and jury entered the courtroom, and the trial officia

Iris' indifference and distance left Stanley feeling lost, filled with regret and heartache. He presented his defense while looking at her in hopes of eliciting a response from her rather than facing her silence."The plaintiff has lived with my client since she was four years old. Throughout her upbringing, her mother has borne the costs of her life, education, and medical expenses. When calculated, it's a significant sum – around fifty to sixty thousand. Additionally, as her mother, it's normal for my client to manage the property on behalf of the plaintiff when she was still a minor...""Please review the documents carefully," Iris interjected sharply, cutting him off. "The divorce agreement between the defendant and her ex-husband clearly states that once my client reaches adulthood, the property must be returned to her. Has it been returned? The defendant has taken advantage of her status as my client's mother to manipulate her into signing a loan. The evidence clearly shows t

Iris finished her statement and took her seat. Stanley looked at her but offered no rebuttal. He settled back in his chair.Rinkah, clearly anxious, urged, "Mr. Stein, she's spouting nonsense. Her birth was the greatest gift she could have ever received."Stanley found her irritating. He looked at her and asked, "Aren't you ashamed of the way you treated your daughter?"Rinkah looked taken aback. "Whose lawyer are you? Whose side are you on?"Stanley replied calmly, "The judge will consider your role as her mother, so the punishment won't be severe. You'll likely just be ordered to pay her back for the property."Rinkah hesitated, her lips moving as if she wanted to say something. She did not want to pay Liandra.Stanley had handled many cases before, so he had seen many selfish people like Rinkah. Thus, he was not surprised by her selfishness. "Let your daughter live," he advised. He could vaguely understand why Iris would take on Liandra’s case. Perhaps she thought Liandra n

When Brad heard Stanley's voice, he sneered and leaned closer to Iris' ear, remarking, "Your ex-husband is still calling your name so affectionately."Iris shot him a glare.Brad chuckled and shrugged.Iris had no intention of engaging with Stanley. His constant pestering irritated her. She wanted nothing more to do with him."Go start the car; we're leaving," Iris instructed."Okay." Brad gave an "OK" sign before turning back to Stanley with a mocking smile.Ignoring Brad's provocative expression, Stanley stepped forward to block Iris' path. "Don't be like this," he said.Iris let her irritation show on her face.Stanley pursed his lips. "Surely you can tell that I didn’t make things difficult for you in court just now. If I had truly intended to defend my client, you wouldn’t have won so easily. I'm not telling you this so that you would thank me; I just want us to get along peacefully, without hostility.""I didn't stop you from defending your client. Don't try to morally b

Before this, Iris didn't know why Jason was so willing to help her either. He had been unbelievably kind to her.At first, she thought it was because of Professor Sandler. But now, she knew.It was because she looked like the woman of his dreams. He merely took care of her the way he would take care of that woman. She was nothing more than a substitute!"So I'm that kind of person in your eyes?" Iris laughed self-mockingly. "You really are trash!"Stanley said, "Even if you've slept with Jason Just, I don't mind. I had an affair too, so we're even. It actually makes me feel better. Iris...""Hey!" Brad shouted as he drove up, glaring at Stanley. "Leave Iris alone. After leaving you, she now realizes there are other fish in the sea. The whole sea is hers to explore. She won't get hung up on an old, crooked fish like you."Stanley's expression darkened slightly, but Iris ignored his displeasure. "I'll tidy up your room for you."She walked away with light steps, every cell in her body leaping with joy, indicating her good mood.Dennis watched his wife with love and indulgence in his eyes. "Look how happy she is."Iris noticed the affection in her father's eyes. She was deeply moved by his love for her mother. In the old days, there were a lot of men who couldn't accept not having a son, so her father's equal regard for daughters was refreshing. It showed how much he loved his wife."My career is on the rise now. In a couple of years, once my career stabilizes, I'll take on fewer cases, and I'll have more time to spend with you," Iris said."Okay," Dennis replied.Iris spent the evening watching TV and chatting with her parents. She listened to Cassie gossip about their relatives.Cassie and Dennis usually went to bed early, but they stayed up late that day because Iris was there. Cassie failed to understand her husband's intentions and remarked, "It's not easy for our daughter to earn money. Do we really need to go on vacation? Since when are you so extravagant?""I..."Before Dennis could explain, Iris set down her cutlery and addressed her mother earnestly. "Mom, I'm happy to spend money on you. Your happiness is what matters to me. If I earn money but don't use it, what's the point? Since Dad wants to go, you should go with him. You both have worked hard all your lives; it's time to enjoy yourselves. Don't worry about money; I'm doing well."She retrieved a bank card from her bag. "There's $150,000 in here."Cassie's eyes widened. "So much?"Iris continued, "I'm an official lawyer now and can earn commissions from cases. You both should spend some money and enjoy yourselves. Don't hold back."Cassie took the card, but didn't put it in her pocket. Despite her love for money, Cassie was reluctant to spend the money that her daughter earned. She returned

Iris chuckled upon hearing that. "Why do you sound like a clingy girlfriend?""Just think of me as your clingy girlfriend then," he replied with a grin.Iris looked at the time."What's the matter? Do you have a date?" Brad asked. She shook her head. "I have an appointment with a witness.""Do you want to go there directly or do you want to go to the law firm first?" he asked.Iris decided they should stop by the law firm first to pick up some stuff. Brad nodded, and they headed to the firm before meeting the witness. The case Iris was handling was complex and couldn't be resolved quickly; it involved multiple parties and factors. Iris was also juggling another case simultaneously. A month later, one case was resolved while another entered its final critical stage, keeping her extremely busy.During this time, Cassie had called her, telling Iris she missed her and asking Iris to visit, but Iris simply didn't have the time. This hectic pace continued for another two months.Sum

Brad arrived at Iris' house precisely at ten past seven. Holding the lunchbox, he rang the doorbell. Iris had just woken up, still in her pajamas, and wondered who could possibly be at the door this early. Sometimes, if she weren't driving, Brad would pick her up at around ten to eight. He wouldn't come this early. When she opened the door, she found him dressed in smart casual attire — a suit jacket, trousers, and white sneakers. In the past, he would wear cool attires like casual pants with a hoodie or a leather jacket, but after accompanying Iris to court on formal occasions, he had adapted his wardrobe considerably. Although he still felt uncomfortable in formal wear, he looked much more mature than before."You're here so early?" Iris asked, surprised."When you're busy, you never eat properly," Brad replied, entering without hesitation. He knew the passcode to her house anyway, so he made himself at home. He walked directly to the dining table. "Go freshen up and change yo

"Are you really going to take on that case, by the way?" Brad asked Iris.Iris asked him back, "Why shouldn't I?""This kind of case could go viral online and attract public scrutiny. I'm worried you'll face backlash. Many people these days lack critical thinking and just follow the crowd," Brad expressed.Iris responded firmly, "I'm a lawyer. I just need to fulfill my duties and do my job well. If I have to weigh the pros and cons before taking on every case..." she turned to him, adding, "What would be the point of doing this job?"Brad fell silent for a moment, then conceded, "Yes, you're right. Don't worry, I'll be at your side."Iris poured cold water on his enthusiasm. "I don't need you to be at my side. You need to go independent.""I don't want to," Brad said, sticking close to her, as if afraid of being left behind."What? Are you just going to cling to me?" she asked."Yes, I am," he chuckled."By the way, I need some fruits but I don't have time to go to the superma

Brad was right, Fiora knew that now. Yet her personality made it difficult for her to apologize and admit her mistakes. When Brad tried to take a sip of water, she snatched the glass from him.Brad looked at her, speechless. Fiora lifted her chin defiantly. "Whether he cares about me or not is none of your business."Brad wanted to ask her if her head had been kicked by a donkey. Instead, he said, "Alright, think what you want. I'm not your brother; I'm not gonna worry about you."Unintentionally, his words elicited a silent reaction from Iris, who lowered her gaze."My brother is overseas dealing with his heartbreak; he doesn't have time to worry about me," Fiora lamented. "I wonder if all the luck in our family has gone to the financial side. Is that why we're so unlucky in everything else? Half a year ago, my brother announced that he had a girlfriend. My mom had even met her and apparently really liked her, but then it all fell apart. My love life is rocky, and my brother's is

Iris said, "Just shut up and order."Brad obediently picked up the menu.Fiora watched the exchange, somewhat shocked at how readily Brad complied with Iris' command. Before this, she and Brad had looked down on each other, and their mutual disdain was evident. She had always thought Brad was too wild and could not be easily controlled, yet here he was, completely under Iris' command. She wondered how Iris had managed to subdue such a wilful young man, especially given Brad's less-than-ideal character.Having spent considerable time with Iris, Brad knew her preferences in food. He ordered the dishes he knew she liked, along with some of his own favorites, before turning to Fiora. "What would you like?""Anything," Fiora replied, prompting Brad to place a random order for her. While they waited for the food, Fiora broached the topic that lingered between them. Iris didn't stop. She felt that they weren't acquainted so there was nothing to talk about.Fiora chased after her, tugging on Brad's arm as she ran past him. "Help me out."Brad thus followed behind her, saying, "If she doesn't want to talk to you, don't force her..."Fiora shot him an annoyed glare. Brad was speechless. Why did she glare at him? She was still the same spoiled brat."Wait, I'm not here to be your enemy," Fiora called as she caught up with Iris.Iris had to cross the street, but the continuous flow of traffic forced her to stop, giving Fiora a chance to catch up to her."I just want to apologize," Fiora said.Iris turned back in surprise. Those unexpected words caught her off guard. She did not expect it from Fiora at all.Why would Fiora suddenly apologize to her?"I know Stanley's married now.
